-Probably the most controversial Sonic character is Shadow the Hedgehog, an obvious Mirror-Image Counterpart to Sonic himself. Made to be Sonic's "Arch-Rival", he's been heavily criticized as an "unnecessary character" (even WIKIPEDIA comments on this, and they've exiled a lot of "Weasel Words" and assorted biased stuff over the years)- generally speaking, he's seen as over-the-top, too mysterious (he's got a amnesia-hidden past, just like Wolverine), too obviously "bad-ass" (he's Sonic... but BLACK! And hardcore! And mean-looking!), and like something out of the early '90s of comics- not the happy, bright world of Sonic. And of course Sega gave him a BIG push, including putting him into his own game. However, backlash set in, and they started holding him back, making him playable mostly in spin-off games and the like.

-Shadow is apparently a MUCH more powerful version of Sonic, down to being bulletproof, having Regeneration, and access to various "Chaos Powers" if he's close to a Chaos Emerald- he gets stuff like Teleportation, Self-Healing and time manipulation powers. I double-checked against the only Shadow build I know of- one by Tyrant Lizard King from 2010.

Like Mother's Basement once said, Sonic is Vegeta Mickey Mouse. And Shadow is Double Vegeta Mickey Mouse.

It's genuinely funny, as Sonic already had a rival-ish antagonist character in Knuckles. Poor Knuckles got Piccolo'd.

Haha I'm trying to figure out the analogy (who is Mother's Basement anyhow?)- because he's a mascot-type character but with the smirking attitude?

Alright- that does it for my Sonic set (I actually had to build Amy Rose because I planned to post her and realized I hadn't yet, lol). Bark & Bean were posted with my Fighting Vipers set. There's probably dozens of other Sonic characters, and the ones posted here seem to have new powers all the time (like Vector's fire breath, I guess), but the details are pretty sparse on a lot of them. I'm actually kind of impressed the Sonic Fandom page isn't a complete mess of edits and too much information (the only thing worse than "no information" for a researcher).

Next up... Dead Or Alive!

Mother's Basement is an anime Youtuber. Geoff Thew is his areal name. Sonic was originally made to be cool and edgy, not like boring ol' Mario or, for the analogy, Mickey Mouse. Dragon Ball has a visible plot sequence of "Goku meets Jerkass Who Is Cool and Edgy But Joins The Cast After They Fight For Some Reason". Tien, then Piccolo, culminating in Vegeta. I mean, Vegeta is just the most prominent example in anime of the supporting character who has basically the same powers and is a hell of a lot cooler than the protagonist. So Sonic was invented to basically pull a Vegeta on the cartoon mascots of the day. Hence Vegeta Mickey Mouse.

But you know how it is. Can't just have good v. evil, that's boring. Need to complicate things. Oh hi Knuckles. Golly, aren't you Cool and Edgy compared with standard Sonic. You're all grumpy and you punch things really hard with those claw knuckle...things. And your backstory is all tragic and stuff. Aw. But you're not actually a bad guy. Just got tricked. Oh, you're sticking around? Cool, cool. Welcome to the team. I look forward to you complementing Sonic as a character.

And now it's later. Sonic and Knuckles have been around for a while. Neither is setting the standard for cool and edgy anymore. And here's Shadow. He's literally just Sonic, but more Sonic. Snarkier, more reckless, and more of a dick. But also with the mysterious and tragic backstory. Ah. They've pulled a Vegeta on Sonic, who was already pulling a Vegeta on classic Mickey Mouse. So Double Vegeta Mickey Mouse. And poor Knuckles suffers the fate of Piccolo. Trumped in edgy badassery and left a humiliated shell of himself. I joke, but still.

The Genius of Sonic's Aesthetic, aka the video I was paraphrasing.

Ninja Gaiden

Post by Jabroniville »

NINJA GAIDEN:
Game Type: Side-Scrolling Action-Platformer
Release Date: 1986
Developer: Tecmo/Team Ninja

-Among the more infamously "Nintendo Hard" games of all time is the Ninja Gaiden series. The name is a funny thing- it's called Ninja Ryukenden ("Legend of the Ninja Dragon Sword") in Japan, but was given the title Gaiden, which means "Side-Story" in Japanese, though it's not actually a side-story of anything. And of course every single kid I ever knew pronounced it "Ninja Gay-den", because that word isn't used in English. I was an adult before I learned what it properly stood for.

-The first game was an Arcade Game in 1986, and it was styled more like Double Dragon, with you playing a pair of unnamed ninjas. The BEST-known game is the 1988 Nintendo version, which is a Side-Scroller with only one player as Ryu Hayabusa, who is attempting to free his father form an evil Apocalyptic Cult. The game shows a lot of cut-scenes that have become quite iconic, and were very unique for the era. The game is primarily known for its intense, vicious, unforgiving difficulty level. While not as unfair as Battletoads or Silver Surfer, Ninja Gaiden is staggering in its challenge. Every platform is tiny as balls. The enemies are numerous. Every strike that touches you will knock you five feet backwards, which will invariably launch you to your doom. As The Angry Video Game Nerd says, "There IS a way to die from taking too much damage in this game! But you'll never actually SEE IT!" The punishing level design finishes just about everybody- the platforms are absolutely CRAWLING with enemies, and nothing short of rote memorization will save you. This is probably one of the top ten most difficult games of all time, to this day.

-The game was a huge, huge hit- one of Nintendo's biggest. Though incredibly-difficult, it was well-made and had great action, and so it got excellent reviews, numerous "Game Of The Year" awards, and a number of sequels came out. Ninja Gaiden II featured Jaquio, the Boss of the first game. Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom is also exceedingly-difficult, getting rid of the game's "Infinite Lives" aspect. Oddly enough, the series more or less disappeared after the NES Era- the Super Nintendo only had a collected version of the NES Trilogy, and the Genesis cancelled a planned version. It wasn't until *2004* that Tecmo released a modern incarnation of Ryu's adventures, as well as including him in the Dead Or Alive Fighting Game franchise (a series more well-known for giant, jiggling hooters than any gameplay elements). The modern Ninja Gaiden games are apparently just as punishing as the NES version, to the point of notoriety- people just aren't MADE for that anymore! Nowadays, we see a new game every four-ish years or so.

Power Loss (Attacks)- Ryu does not attack while climbing walls or ladders.
Vulnerable (Knockback)- Ryu will immediately go flying towards the nearest Bottomless Pit should he be struck by an enemy- he will need to make a DC 22 Acrobatics Check every time he is struck in order to not go flying.

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 24 / Powers: 3 / Defenses: 15 (142)

-Ryu Hayabusa (literally; "Dragon Peregrine Falcon") is one of those guys who could fit between PL 4 (what he comes off as in the games) and PL 10 (an Elite Comic Book-Calibre Ninja), but I went with PL 9- the games are just TOO FREAKING HARD to justify him at a higher level. Ryu has a ton of Ninja Skills, plus good fighting ability. Assorted other Items available in some games include Hourglasses that freeze all enemies on-screen for five seconds, Healing Potions, One-Ups, and Invincibility.

-In Dead Or Alive, Ryu takes up a role as a secondary protagonist- he is the canonical winner of the second tournament, killing the otherworldly Tengu. He continues on in later tournaments as a side-hero- he is a friend and rival of Hayate's, engaging in practice matches and the like, and often advises heroines like Kasumi.

Dead Or Alive

Post by Jabroniville »

HUGE HEAVING TITS- THE VIDEO GAME:

-... wait! Shit! That's not the name! It's...

DEAD OR ALIVE:

-Yes, through no fault but their own, Tecmo's Dead Or Alive is known pretty much as "the game with the huge, heaving jugs". I mean, they ADVERTISED it that way. Commercials in the West even were like "HEY LOOK AT THESE HOT CHICKS!" (one featured a nerdy guy going "... she kicks high"). The games were fun on their own merit, and they actually have a small bit of respect as legit fighting games, but they are pretty much softcore porn. The games are 3D fighters, and fit in the realm of Virtua Fighter and Tekken, but have nowhere near the respect of either. The games are combo and juggle-focused, with a "Triangle System" of counters developed- Blows beat Throws, Throws beat Holds and Holds beat Blows. The most distinctive feature of the gameplay (starting with DOA 2) was "Danger Zones" in battles- if you hit a person in a certain spot of the stage, both of you would FLY through the scenery, crash-landing in a new area. Somewhat famously, the games feature Ryu Hayabusa, the hero of Ninja Gaiden, as a major protagonist.

DOA came out in 1996 and was a big hit. DOA 2 was released a LONG time later, in 1999, with DOA 3 coming out in 2001. The faptastic nature of the game led to the release of a bikini-themed volleyball game Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball in xxxx. DOA 4 came out in 2005, and 2006 saw the release of an infamous movie called DOA: Dead Or Alive, which nuked Jaime Pressly's career in an instant (she was a nudie actress in the '90s, but had respect and Emmys as Earl's sister on My Name Is Earl. A second volleyball came out that year as well. Perhaps not so coincidentally, DOA 5 took seven years after the last game to come out, benig released in 2012. DOA Dimensions was a Nintendo 3DS exclusive. DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball 3 came out in 2016. DOA 6 came out in 2019, and is the latest release thus far. By any metric, the series is a massive success.

The story, as usual, involves a "Big Mysterious Corporation", DOATEC (DOA Tournament Executive Committee). In the first game, the main character is Kasumi, a runaway kunoichi (female ninja) out to kill Raidou for injuring her brother, Hayate- she ultimately succeeds. In the sequel, Kasumi & Hayate are captured by DOATEC ane experimented on. The demonic Tengu is the Final Boss, ultimately killed by Ryu Hayabusa. In the third game, DOATEC creates a super-warrior called Omega, and forms the tournament to test it- Kasumi's half-sister Ayane wins this one. Helena takes over DOATEC in this one, and ultimately wins the tournament. Jann Lee wins the fifth, which is based around former DOATEC agent Donovan continuing a dangerous "Alpha" project. Jann Lee again wins the sixth tournament, but is beaten in an unofficial match by Diego, the newcomer. Raidou returns from the dead and is killed by Kasumi, Ayane & Hayate as well.

The characters, despite being the big stand-out of the series, are pretty generic. Generic Hot Girls abound, with nearly every one having the exact same body type (Skinny; Huge Cans), so in picking a favorite you basically have to find whatever fetish they have (Bad Girl, Blonde, etc.). The male characters are actually more numerous than the female ones at first, shockingly enough, but most of them are taken from the Hall O' Stereotypes (Old Man! Muay Thai Guy! Bruce Lee Clone!), which is kind of embarrassing since Tekken ALSO uses these same stereotypes, and came out first (BOTH GAMES have Black Muay Thai fighters and Bruce Lee Clones!).

Worse still, later games fall into the modern "DLC" trap, as character outfit customization (free in contemporaries like Tekken) costs a FORTUNE (you have to pay REAL MONEY to dye a character's hair... and the dye will eventually fade! So you have to buy MORE of it!), and it has the same grossly unfinished starter roster as many other games, with tons more available for download.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 44--22 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 2 / Defenses: 11 (107)

-Rachel is a Guest Character of sorts, but from Ryu Hayabusa's Ninja Gaiden series- she's a part-demon blonde "Fiend Hunter" in leather fetish gear, looking very much like an "early 2000s" video game character. She was on a mission to kill her twin sister, who had become fully corrupted, then met Ryu. He was able to help her kill her sister- an act she didn't cherish, but needed to be done. She joins the DOA series (starting with the 2013 DOA 5 Ultimate) as a Guest Character in order to "hone her skills" without having to kill anyone. Her deal with Ryu is that they started off not trusting each other, but grew to be trusted allies and friends during their demon-killing mission.

-Rachel is said to be similar to SPARTAN-458 in that she's a fast-attacking brawler with a simplistic moveset, but does a lot of air throws.

I've always appreciated DOA since the 1st one, so as a fan, I have to endure everything else the game is in order to appreciate the really fast and smooth fighting.

The story is not as detailed as Tekken or most 2D fighting worlds, but it's not the worst. It's still way better than Virtua Fighter's story. Their story sucks so much they had to bring their characters over to DOA.

And the DOA movie is both a proud guilty pleasure and one of the best video game adaptations ever (admittedly a low bar).

Relationship (Ayane- Half-Sister)- The two were best friends as children, even before they discovered a familial relationship. However, Ayane grew bitter over mistreatment from the family and learning that she was the product of the rape of their mother Ayame, and the two girls became rivals.
Responsibility (Mugen Tenshin Clan)- Kasumi was supposed to be the new leader of her ninja Clan, but rejected it in order to save Hayate. Now, the Clan hunts her, forcing her to live in isolation.

Total: Abilities: 64 / Skills: 58--29 / Advantages: 19 / Powers: 10 / Defenses: 18 (142)

-The main character of the DOA series and the overall mascot is the short, busty kunoichi, Kasumi. She was the second in line for her ninja clan's leadership, but quit in order to avenge her injured brother, Hayate. She fought her uncle Raidou in the final bout of the first tournament, killing him and becoming the canonical winner of the first tourney. Soon after this, she is captured by DOATEC and cloned in their labs- she is rescued by Ryu Hayabusa and runs off to find Hayate, who is amnesiac- he & Hayabusa are more important to the story, however. Kasumi is on the run for the third game, and in the fourth, joins with Hayate to try and stop their Clan from attacking DOATEC, fearing a huge loss of life. Her clones, Kasumi α and Alpha-152, become active and Kasumi has to fight them, and most later games involving her still being on the run. Honestly, she seems to not really matter that much in later story-arcs- like they just kinda had to have some kind of "Kasumi Thing" going on, and she's often rescued by other characters- Hayabusa, Hayate & Ayane among them.

-Kasumi was designed based around a lot of "What Japanese men typically find hot", which meant she was short, round-faced, "child-like", kind and had huge breasts. Yes, the designers used the term "child-like" when designing their fap-bait. She aged up a bit over the years, but her canonical age in the first game (16) had a notable affect on DeviantArt, where suddenly the people running the site dictated that this being her early age meant that all nude drawings of her were officially "Under 18" regardless of her current age in the franchise (18-22 or something), which got a TON of artwork deleted, especially as any DOA-themed stuff was then suspect.

-Kasumi in the DOA series is considered a "Top Tier" character, always made super-relevant and powerful by the gameplay, where her moves have simple inputs and she's one of the fastest characters. After a point, she learns "Teleportation"-style moves that mainly serve to engage in cross-ups (ie. "show up behind someone and attack them behind their guard"). However, she is easy to punish if she goes too far in button-mashing or spamming attacks, and her moves do little damage.

-As always, the surest sign of someone's importance to a work is when they start adding spin-off characters and clones of that character. Look at all the clones of Kyo in the King of Fighters series. Kasumi α is a clone of Kasumi, created by Victor Donovan & DOATEC, meant to be the perfect human weapon. Kasumi had been captured following her victory in the first tournament, and a perfect copy was made- she went on to capture Hayate, but was defeated by the real Kasumi in the end. In DOA 3, she was now just called "Alpha", and still worked for Donovan & Christie. She was sent after Helena Douglas, but lost. In DOA 3, she was further geneticaly modified, becoming "Alpha-152". She is found and beaten by another Kasumi clone, who believes herself to be the original, but morphs into a clone of Hayabusa and fights the heroes again. The real Hayabusa stops its attacks, and Kasumi finally finishes it off in a burning lab. Curiously, throughtout all of this, she is NON-PLAYABLE- just a roving NPC who fights and loses to people in the background.

-Kasumi α is said to be easier to use than the baseline Kasumi, but not as good, as she never develops her moveset beyond the DOA 2 one (the real Kasumi has since learned additional techniques). In-continuity, she's largely a jobber, losing to most of the major characters- Helena, Hayabusa, Kasumi, etc.

There is a bit of novelty to making the tiny fanservice ninja the Ryu of the series, right down to being so powerful that the bad guys want her to be the template for their superweapons or whatever.

Responsibility (Missions)- Phase 4s are essentially disposable henchwomen. This main one has her own mind, but no free will, giving her a degree of inner torment.

-Yeah, I don't know why we needed ANOTHER Kasumi Clone- Phase 4 replaces "Kasumi Alpha" from the first handful of games. The prototype of the "final model", she is ordered to fight as a test before mass production of her line of Kasumi Clones. Naturally, she was made by Victor Donovan. Part of the prologue is that she attacked Bayman and his men, striking them down at blinding speed, but hesitated to kill him along with his men, teared up, and abandoned the battle, leaving Bayman only with two vicious scars across his torso and face.

-So it turns out in DOA 6 that she HAS been mass produced, and they are now used by Donovan's MIST as henchwomen. They attack Kasumi & Ryu Hayabusa en masse and are slain in large numbers- Hayate later defeats another batch to save Honoka. So the usual "Law of Ninjitsu" applies- ONE Kasumi Clone is a deadly danger to you and everyone around you; a GROUP of Kasumi Clones are easily disposable Mooks.

-"Phase 4" here appears like Kasumi, but with longer eyelashes and her hair down. In the game, she is a particular unit set apart from the others a bit visually. She has her own mind, but no free will- she cannot go against her programming, resulting in significant moral torment. She wishes to live as a normal person, and not kill others. She is supposed to represent the "Early Kasumi"- a morally-angsty heroine who kills others because she must, but deeply regrets it.

-In-game, Phase 4 is more Teleport-dependent than Kasumi, but has weaker cross-ups, making her one of the most difficult characters in the game to learn. She is riskier than Kasumi, but potentially more powerful.
