Enemy (The Cyberdrones)- Matrix was orphaned as a young girl by a robot uprising that could have destroyed all humanity. She has since become mankind's greatest warrior.
Weakness (Predictability)- These fighters cannot simply "spam" out the same attack over and over again, as the opponent will expect the attacks, and be ready for them (and a counterattack). The third time they try the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, they will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to their Active Defenses in that round. All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done.

Total: Abilities: 62 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 13 + 9 / Powers: 14 / Defenses: 8 (122)

-Okay, Matrix isn't so bad- a blonde female Space Hero, she packs some very unique "1950s Space" stuff you don't normally see in Fighting Games, plus a laser sword. She is said to have been orphaned in the "Cyber Wars", when the family Nannydrone tortured and disemboweled her parents and older brother when all robots went mysteriously berserk (naturally, this was caused by Death). She was saved by a stroke of luck (another robot exploded, destroying this one), and found the human survivors. At ten, she destroyed an entire battalion of Cyberdrones by herself, riding a bucking drone and using its gun to shoot the others. However, she lost her hand in the process- scientists built her a cybernetic limb that extended, and could also read Cyberdrone commands, allowing the humans to anticipate their actions. At 24, she at last decoded the location of the Cyberdrones' headquarters, leading a group to the Master Drone's chamber, killing it herself. This destroyed the functions of every robot on the planet, saving humanity.

-Matrix is pretty much like Musashi but with cybernetics- an extending arm that punches and can read the communications of the Cyberdrones.

The third time they try the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, they will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to their Active Defenses in that round. -So the Final Boss of Time Killers is the figure of Death itself- which doffs its robe to reveal a muscular, Oni-like figure with a blue face, flaming hair and a double-bladed scythe. Meh- not the greatest final challenge or anything, but he's alright. Interestingly, the game's story suggests that Death himself is behind all of these Evil Hordes that show up in the stories of the other characters. See, the story indicates that "Death infused a portion of his being into mortal creatures of power and evil who performed his horrible machinations. And, to his eternal chagrin, Death has been soundly defeated by an individual and seemingly inconsequential agent of the Life Force." These agents are, of course, the various heroes of the game! His scheme now- forging the "Time Killers" tournament to wipe out all of the Agents of Life!

-Death is a pretty basic Final Boss- just a bit ahead of the other characters- but has one superior attribute... you cannot defeat him without a Decapitation move! This is VERY tricky to pull off in the game, making him almost impossibly hard- if you succeed, his body is set alight, revealing muscles and organs beneath, and then he explodes. His sheer breadth of powers (particularly instant Immortality, since he's unkillable without the head-chopping) makes him remarkably expensive.

One mildly unique thing about Orion is his gravity control. In-game, it usually only manifests in him being able to do a few tricks like do a wall-bounce with no wall, and a few of his moves had an odd inertia to them which can throw people off, but he's apparently able to fly based on his victory pose. I don't think he actually has that in his moveset during the match. Oh, and his moveset mentions a "Gravity Throw" that apparently lets you change the direction of gravity, but I forget how that works exactly.

As much as anything, the in-game effect feels like a single Benefit to give him +2 to his feints, but I figured I'd mention it.

It's also shown in his death animation, as unlike the other fighters his body floats in the air, then floats away.

BloodStorm

BLOODSTORM:
Developed By: Incredible Technologies
Release Date: 1994 (Arcades), 1996 (Sega Genesis)

-Though Time Killers is infamous and terrible, it did in fact give birth to a "spiritual sequel"- the hilariously-named BloodStorm. This is funny to me, because I recall reading on TVTropes and other places that various bits of fiction often give bloody video games ludicrous or over-the-top names that aren't based in reality... and here's BloodStorm, which looks like a literal parody of Mortal Kombat via The Simpsons (the violent video game Bart stole in that one famous episode was actually called Bonestorm, for example). The game, coming out two years after Time Killers did, was hoped to be an "MK Killer", and has the same kind of system as the first game- you can chop off your enemy's limbs and head. You can also "sunder" your opponents by destroying their lower body- they can no longer jump or kick, and must slide around awkwardly.

There are eight selectable characters, most pretty close in build and techniques (Freon & Hellhound even rip off MK's "ice guy in blue & fire guy in red and are palette swaps of the other", merely using different heads and weapons). The game also implements a feature from Mega Man- defeating an opponent allows you to use a technique of theirs! This is something almost never done in Fighting Games, and is very curious. Adding to things, each stage has its own Stage Fatality, but also some secrets within. SEVEN characters are found hidden in "portals" in these stages, much like Reptile from Mortal Kombat in The Pit. However, these seven characters aren't mere palette swaps like in MK- they combined that with head swapping and use different weapons (though largely they use a communal moveset- most have some kind of "Twirling Beam" and re-use the ranged attacks of other characters).

The story sees a post-apocalyptic Earth, badly damaged after the "Mega War" destroyed many continents and set off cataclysmic weather. Peace was restored and alliances made, but now it's even further in the future, and THOSE are breaking down- the mysterious Death Zone has been silent for centuries, and the world is on the brink of war again. The Emperor of Earth has been assassinated, and an ancient "Ritual of Combat" to determine the new ruler. Each of the eight provinces will bring about their own champion. Each champion wears a "Gauntlet of Ascension" that only those with power may wield. The characters have just enough backstory to almost be interesting, though most are full-blown evil and will destroy the world if they win the game.

There are a variety of special codes out there. Characters can swap another character's Gauntlet onto themselves. There are "Vulgarities" that allow you to swear at your opponents mid-match ("Bitch" and the like), and there's even the option of Big Head Characters, straight out of NBA Jam, not only for the characters but allowing you to swap NEW heads in, such as those of the developers, as well as Senator Joe Lieberman, the famous anti-video game violence campaigner. The hilarious thing is, they did a TON of stuff right- tons of secrets, tons of characters, move-stealing, a backstory that has a lot of inter-character complexities and feuds, various motivations, plenty of Secret Characters, Stage Fatalities and more! They had everything needed to make a Mortal Kombat killer... except a good game.

The game is clunky, simplistic and everyone fights the same way- Sunder Attacks, Generic Blasts, and typically dash or extended-reach Special Attacks. Nothing fancy, unique or original at all. It basically looks like several variations of the same character (every male save two are the same level of musculature), made worse by the Head-Swapped secret characters. BloodStorm wasn't rated terribly well, but wasn't infamous, either- even worse, it was forgotten. Today almost nobody knows it even exists! It was the last game produced by Strata before they went out of business- home ports for the Saturn & PlayStation were announced, but both were cancelled. The game is probably most notable, in fact, for something completely unrelated to gameplay. The actor who played Johnny Cage in MK I-II, Daniel Pesina, had his image placed on the side of the arcade cabinet, thus promoting the game. For this conflict of interest, he was promptly fired by Midway from the MK series, which is why Cage was absent from MK III.

-Hellhound hails from the "Scorch Province" deserts, and is a red-clad guy who pretty much looks like Trap-Jaw from He-Man. He is the mightiest general of Scorch and has announced himself as an official spokesman and diplomat for the country. In peace talks with the hated Polaria, he revels in turning those to chaos, planning on killing all of them. If he wins the tournament, he gets only three sentences of dialogue, where he dooms the entire planet to burn. He and Freon are head-swaps of each other, with Hellhound mostly in red and with lava-colored skin- they also act as the base for the Secret Character "Shadow", and probably Blood as well.

-Hellhound's stage on "Scorch" lets you fight the secret character Wraith, but only by entering a secret code.

-Hellhound is a simple-minded brawler, but has some unique attributes, like being able to resist being frozen (I assume the Polarian's attack specifically) as long as you spin the joystick around. He can also shoot fire or straight-up transform himself into it for his attacks. Defeating him gives opponents the Hellfire.

-Hellhound's counterpart (they share a body, swapping out the head and Freon's body being icy blue-gray), Freon hails from the ice-cold Polaria, where people have grown to become cold-blooded. He rules Polaria with arrogance and pomp, demanding accolades wherever he goes, and expects the subjugation of the Scorch people... which will of course never happen. His "Polaria" stage has a demon head statue on each side- you can impale your stunned opponent onto their horns, leaving enemies twitching as they die.

-Freon has a boomerang-style weapon, can turn into ice (effectively a Teleport effect bringing him to the other side of the screen), and freeze people like Sub-Zero (albeit in a giant ice cube in melee, not merely freezing them in mid-pose and at range). Defeating him earns the opponent his "Ice-A-Rang".

-Tremor seems to look and act just like Frankenstein's monster, with a gurgling "URRRGHHHH!" with everything, and a face that's either deep red or bright green, but he's apparently a wise, ecologically-friendly warior. He is the wisest of the Earthians of Subterra, who are a long-lived, peaceful people They lived happily beneath the earth, nurtured by its mystical energies, unaware of what was happening on the surface, and Tremor was the first to emerge. He attempted to convince the leaders of the other provinces to change their ways, but they had grown too cynical and mistrustful, and so nobody believed him. Frustrated, he feels the only hope now is to win the tournament and force his ecological changes upon the world. His ending, the only positive one of the game, sees him fix Obsel, and the other nations immediately fall into line and gain peace and prosperity.

-His "Subterra" stage features a long drop onto a stalagmite as a Stage Fatality, but you can activate a secret path to reach the secret character Golem. Hitting a hanging stalagtite with a projectile twice, and it will create a platform for you.

-Tremor is the game's "Big Guy", and wields both a standard-issue Ground Pound, and the ability to turn into a boulder and do a Blanka-like "Beast Roll" across the screen. There's also a green energy blast- the "Shockwave". Defeating him gives opponents the "Earthquake" move.

For its time, Bloodstorm had some pretty neat ideas and was packed with content..too bad the actual game wasn't any good. The gameplay is at least a step up from Time Killers, though that's not saying much. The game so much wants to be an MK killer, it even had a dedicated block button like those games, in addition to all the secret characters and other hidden codes. One cool thing was when selecting a character, you could create a password to save your character, so stuff like how many powers you'd stolen would be saved. I doubt these passwords remained after the machine was turned off, though. Oh yeah, and the CGI on the bosses are hillariously bad looking.

Gauntlet Strike/Grapple Arm +11 (+5 Damage, DC 20)
Close Shave +9 (+7 Damage, DC 22)
Optic Laser +10 (+4 Ranged Damage, DC 19)
Sunder +11 (+5 Damage & Affliction, DC 20 & 15)
Initiative +4

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +9 (DC 19), Toughness +4 (+5 D.Roll), Fortitude +6, Will +6

Complications:
Enemy (Talon)- Talon tortured Razor and turned him into a cyborg.
Relationship (Tempest)- The two were once in a relationship.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 13 + 9 / Powers: 19 / Defenses: 7 (125)

-Looking the most like an action hero out of this cast, Razor is a cyborg guy with beard stubble. He is said to have been handsome and crafty, and had a torrid love affair with Tempest, daughter of the emperor. However, some of the ruling class accused him of conspiring to kill the Royal Family to seize power, and had him tortured and vivisected by Talon. Talon turned him into a cyborg, replacing his eye and arm with mechanical replacements before Razor was able to escape back to his home in Ebony Harbor. Razor managed to gain power by creating an underground black market, and now rules the Harbor through this criminal network.

-His stage, the "Black Armada", has a catwalk in the background that you can leap to temporarily, allowing you to hop from one section to another. This lets you escape enemy pressure. This stage unlocks the fight against Craniac- if you leap to the catwalk three times and stay as long as possible each time (by holding "down")- Craniac will then challenge you.

-Razor is pretty standard to the game, but has a criminal backstory and more mental ability than most. He has an extendable "Grapple Arm" (outside of his weapon), an Optic Laser, and a charging uppercut move (the "Close Shave")- defeating him nets other fighters the Optic Laser, which of course doesn't come out of the Gauntlet- they merely gain his Frieza-like visor thingie.

The only game I've heard of doing something similar was Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer for the Neo-Geo. The game was actually kind of a fun idea of creating characters based on several genres (Standard Shonen Hero, Supernatural Monster Hunter, Tokusatsu, American Superheroes, etc.) and having them all fight it out. And when you beat an opponent, you had the option of selecting a certain move of theirs that you could then use until you swapped it out for a different one.

Though the game is mostly well known for being designed by Masami Ōbari, as well as the fanservice heavy anime based off of the game.

-Talon looks hilariously like Lex Luthor- an evil-looking bald guy in a green suit of armor. He's a cyborg from "Cyberia", the technological capital of the planet. Unfortunately the creation of said technology led to horrible pollution, and a vicious cell disease threatened everyone there. With no medical experience, the people had to look internally, and thus turned themselves into cyborgs, replacing most of their bodies with cybernetics. Talon is the "cold and unfeeling" ruler of Cyberia- he was programmed to try and find a cure for the techno-virus, and so began kidnapping people from other provinces and performing unspeakable experiments on them- rival fighter Razor was the only survivor.

-The "Cyberia" stage offers no secret characters, but has a notable Stage Fatality- uppercutting a stunned opponent sends them flying up into these enormous ceiling fans, which quickly shred the enemy's head, arms and legs, leaving a blood torso and scattered bits in one of the game's gorier moves.

-Talon can shoot out Cruise Missiles and spin his torso around like Zangief's "Spinning Clothesline" in various positions (airborne, grounded), calling it a "Heli". Foes who vanquish him gain his "Cruise Missile".

The first anime I ever saw that made me understand what "fan service" was. In our wasted youth, my friends and I tabulated panty shots. I think there was one every minute or so on average.

-A woman with short hair, shoulder-pads and a loincloth, Mirage is the militant leader of Obsel- a harsh desert where survival is a constant struggle. After a number of civil wars, the oppressive male population was reduced to very little, and the women took power. The direct descendant of the leader of the Great Female Uprising, she keeps up old traditions like cutting off the feet of males at birth and raising them in pens solely for reproduction... and nourishment! Yes, the women of Obsel are so militant they LITERALLY EAT MEN.

-Her "Obsel Desert" stage has a secret where if you launch your Gauntlet at your opponent, then do the "pick-up Gauntlet" move on an icon on the platform, a portal will appear that sends you to face Dimentia.

-Mirage fires grenades and lays down Land Mines, making her a solid blaster.
