Enemy (The Mugen Tenshin Clan)- Donovan keeps trying to clone Kasumi, and has made enemies of her relatives and friends Hayate, Hayabusa & Ayane as well.
Enemy (Bayman)- Bayman was once hired to kill Fame Douglas so Donovan could take over DOATEC. When Bayman was set up to be killed to cover up this loose end, the man survived and swore vengeance.
Enemy (Helena Douglas)- Donovan is responsible for the deaths of her parents.

Total: Abilities: 40 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 9 (66)

-Oddly, the Main Villain of the Dead Or Alive series is Victor Donovan, a non-fighter who always wears a mask, and runs first DOATEC, and then MIST. He actually doesn't appear in person until 2011's Dead or Alive Dimensions, though- mostly being a behind the scenes guy. In the first game, he hires Bayman to kill DOATEC's chairman, Fame Douglas, thus letting himself take it over. Donovan then tries to create the perfect fighter, abducting various characters (particularly Kasumi) to harvest their DNA. He & Genra of the Mugen Tenshin clan ally in DOA 2, and this leads ot the creation of the clone Kasumi α. When Helena Douglas inherits her father's position at DOATEC, Donovan kidnaps her, and hires the assassin Christie to keep an eye on her. When Donovan tries to assassinate Bayman to cover that loose end, he earns another enemy, too.

-DOATEC is ultimately destroyed in DOA 4, and Donovan returns in the next game leading MIST, a group that's continuing his "Alpha Project" to create great fighters and sell them to various militaries around the world- Raidou is resurrected as a cyborg in the process. We discover that the new hero, Rig, is Donovan's son, but ultimately the heroes destroy the clones.

-Victor Donovan is a genius and quite survivable, but is no fighter.

It's something really curious that the series overall Big Bad isn't a fighter, but I suppose he's still the one creating all the various threats. the only time he's been a fighter, is funnily enough, the Live Action Movie version, which had Donovan download data from several of the fighters onto a pair of fancy glasses to create the "Dead Or Alive Program", using his technology to grant him all their fighting skill and able to predict and adapt to any fighting style.. Of course, he's defeated by just knocking the things off since that removes all his fighting skill. If I were to adapt something like that to the video game version of the guy, I'd probably make it part of that fancy creepy mask of his that he's always wearing.

GEN FU
Role:

First Appearance: Dead or Alive (1995)
Total Appearances: DOA 1-3, DOA 4-5 (as unlockable)

STRENGTH
2 STAMINA 2 AGILITY 6
FIGHTING 10 DEXTERITY 2

Skills:
Acrobatics 8 (+14)
Athletics 8 (+10)
Close Combat (Unarmed) 4 (+14)
Expertise (Martial Arts) 10 (+12)
Insight 4 (+8)
Perception 4 (+8)

Advantages:
Chokehold, Fast Grab, Grab Finesse, Improved Critical (Unarmed), Improved Defense, Improved Hold, Improved Initiative, Improved Trip, Power Attack

Powers:
"Can Still Throw Big Guys" Power-Lifting 1 (400 lbs.) [1]
"Special Moves" Strength-Damage +2 (Inaccurate -1) [1]

Offense:
Unarmed +14 (+2 Damage, DC 17)
Special Moves +12 (+4 Damage, DC 19)
Initiative +10

Defenses:
Dodge +9 (DC 19), Parry +14 (DC 24), Toughness +2, Fortitude +4, Will +6

Complications:
Relationship (Mei Lin)- Gen Fu raises his granddaughter alone- when she falls ill, he decides to fight in the tournament to raise money for her medical care, then her operation.
Relationship (Eliot- Student)- Gen Fu has selected the orphaned boy Eliot as his apprentice (the reasons unknown to all but Gen Fu). Impressed with his development thus far, he now promises to teach the boy his full style.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 2 / Defenses: 11 (101)

-le sigh. Another Fighting Game, another horribly generic, boring "Wise Old Man" design. The oldest cliche in martial arts films & games continues on with this plain-ass dude. The mohawked Gen Fu fights to raise money for his granddaughter's medical care, first for doctor visits and then for an operation. But then in DOA 4 that's mostly done with (he does not win, but comes close and earns enough money), and he instead takes on a student named Eliot to use his same style. Gen Fu thus leaves the series, appearing in DOA 4-5 only as an unlockable character- a sure sign of a failed design (given this series includes BAYMAN AND BASS in every edition so far). Gen Fu remains impressed with Eliot's development, finally agreeing to teach him his complete style, Xinyi Liuhe Quan.

Special Moves +11 (+4 Damage, DC 19)
Initiative +10

Defenses:
Dodge +9 (DC 19), Parry +13 (DC 23), Toughness +2, Fortitude +4, Will +4

Complications:
Responsibility (Gen Fu's Student)- Eliot struggles to do his master proud, but finds himself inexperienced and unworthy. Most of his character growth is devoted to increasing his self-worth and being talked up by other characters.

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 2 / Defenses: 11 (86)

-A tiny, generic-looking blond teenage boy, Eliot is the student of Gen Fu introduced in DOA 4, using his Xingyi Quan style, effectively from that point on swapping out his master in the series. The youngest playable character in the series, he is depicted as a shy, somewhat nervous young man, and the most intimidated by beautiful women such as Christie. He's a British boy orphaned after moving to China, and Gen Fu chose him as a student for reasons unexplained- Eliot has tried to do his master proud. When he tells his master that he's not ready to take over as master, he's slapped by Ayane and told to stop putting himself down. His first game pairs him up with Brad Wong, who acts as both an "older mentor" but also someone who can loosen up and enjoy life- something Eliot struggles with, providing a contrast. At the end of DOA 4, he arrives home and challenges his master, defeating him for the first time ever and proving himself as worthy.

-In DOA 6, Eliot's skills in his art are such that Gen Fu declares him a master, and that he shall now teach Eliot the Xinyi Liuhe Quan style.
-Eliot is an inexperienced fighter who is growing in skill- he works best as a long-range fighter who can dive in quickly (he has the longest-reaching Special Move in the game, apparently), but poor combos.

Advantages:

Powers:

Offense:

Special Moves +11 (+5 Damage, DC 20)
Initiative +5

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +13 (DC 23), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +4

Complications:
Motivation (Fame & Money)
Relationship (Niki)- Niki tends to be with Zack when he makes riches, but abandons him when he loses them.
Relationship (Helena)- Zack saved Helena's life in DOA 4, and has worked for her ever since- it's hinted that he may have an interest in her, but he keeps things professional. Which is highly unlike Zack.

Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 46--23 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 1 / Defenses: 11 (92)

-Zack is the game's Muay Thai Guy, though sometimes shakes up the generic look (ie. boxer shorts and tape around the hands & feet), and is a glory-hogging fame-seeker. With his flashy attire (which extends to the truly ludicrous, like his infamous "alien suit") and constant smiles and jovial attitude, he acts like a somewhat stereotypical Japanese idea of what a black man is like, particularly an athlete- you see the "Smiling Black Man" show up in a lot of media over there. Zack generally scores highly in the tournaments only because others step down- he gains prize money when Ayane steps down, and one "victory" comes from Helena ceding the title of winner to him. However, he finds a girlfriend in Niki in DOA 3, the two winning a fortune at the Roulette tables in Vegas (his desire for the prize money was to gamble with it, naturally). With said winnings, he became the owner of "Zack Island", which is where the boob-shaking side-game Xtreme Volleyball takes place... but a volcano destroys it and his winnings, and Niki abandons him.

-He fights in the 4th tournament to win back money, but is blown off DOATEC's Tritower by an explosion from the Mugen Tenshin Clan's attack on the corporation. He saved Helena's life in the follow-up, saving her when she has the building self-destruct- as a reward, she cedes the prize money to him. Niki naturally rejoins him and he makes New Zack Island for another Xtreme game- it is blown up by a meteor shower, but he is saved by aliens (the canon status of these games is... questionable). In DOA 5, Zack now works for Helena, recruiting fighters. He seems to be almost a manager in DOA 6, acting as the game's announcer and scouting new & returning fighters.

-As a fighter, Zack is a powerful, fast striker, easily capable of "mix-ups" (ie. getting behind someone to catch them flat-footed) and juggling people after hitting his powerful rising knee to lift them into the air.

Defenses:
Dodge +13 (DC 23), Parry +13 (DC 23), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +6

Complications:
Responsibility (Dragon Shrine Maiden)- Momiji is a strong ally of Ryu Hayabusa's, and shares his enemies.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 11 / Powers: 2 / Defenses: 15 (108)

-Momiji is another Ninja Gaiden character translated over into DOA- she is a Dragon Shrine Maiden of the Hayabusa clan, and an ally of Ryu's. She lost her older sister when villains attacked her shrine while she was away, leaving her devastated. She trained under Ryu and became a skilled kunoichi. Five years after her first appearance, she showed up in a later edition of DOA 5. There's not much else about her character, particularly with regards to DOA, where she just kind of "shows up" in the plotline and doesn't do anything.

-Momiji is a pretty standard PL 8 fighter, but with some Ninja stuff thrown in. She's said to be good for beginners, with a straightforward and "safe" moveset versus a lot of convoluted stuff.

Special Moves +12 (+4 Damage, DC 19)
Initiative +10

Defenses:
Dodge +9 (DC 19), Parry +14 (DC 24), Toughness +2, Fortitude +5, Will +6

Complications:
Motivation (Becoming a Famous Starlet)- Tina largely wants to drop fighting and be recognized by Hollywood, thus becoming a starlet. She also seems to get attracted to a variety of different careers as time goes on.
Relationship (Bass- Father)- Tina's father is the greatest pro wrestler ever, and despises her career ambitions, often leading to fights.
Rivalry (Zack)- Zack relentlessly hits on Tina, as well as many other characters... but particularly her. This leads to comedic rejections and teasing from Tina.
Relationship (Lisa Hamilton)- The two have been friends since grade school.

Total: Abilities: 56 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 2 / Defenses: 14 (98)

-Tina, aka "The Blonde One", has been with the DOA series since the beginning, and is the daughter of Bass Armstrong. Though trained by her father in pro wrestling and being very good at it, she is instead ambitious and yearns for different careers... a different one in every game, much to her dad's annoyance. This often leads to matches between the two of them in a recurring gag in the series. Tina is notable for having the largest bust of any character in the series until DOA 5 (where apparently Honoka takes over), though really, boobs are pretty big in this series. Though I'd say she's a little less stacked than Mai Shiranui or something- much as DOA made its name on boobs, the women are all pretty slender and "merely" have D-DD cups. She's also among the Fanserviest characters- in DOA 5, her outifit is simply body-hugging jeans and a US-flag bikini top! This overt sexiness tends to put her near the top of "Hottest Gaming Girls" lists, but Kasumi far leads her in fanart. However, her status as a blonde white girl made her the star of the DOA movie, where Jaime Pressly unwisely took the role, thus putting a bullet in the forehead of her acting career.

-Tina actually debuted as a brunette fighter in a pretty generic outfit, but swiftly changed to blonde and in a variety of Combat Bikinis and the like- Team Ninja has said that the original arcade game couldn't manage blonde hair at first, or else she'd have had blonde hair back then, too! In DOA 1, she wants to be discovered by Hollywood, but in DOA 2, she wants to be a supermodel specifically. By the third game, she's successfully become a model and now wants to act, and in the fourth, she wants to be a rock star. She retires before the fifth game, but is inspired to return after a sparring session with Mila, but decides to run for political office in the end. This all marks her as ambitious, stubborn and strong-willed, but flighty to the point of it being a gag.

-Tina is a pretty basic "Female Fighter Template" character, albeit with more natural charisma. Unable to pick a career and stick with it, however, she's only a mediocre actress and model so far. She's almost merit "Attractive", given her focus on using her sex appeal for fame, but she doesn't actually use it as a weapon, or to flirt, so she doesn't get it. Tina makes more use of trip actions and other grappling than other characters do, owing to her wrestling upbringing. Style-wise, she is a smaller, faster version of Bass.

Eh. Her movie career, maybe, but she continued and continues to enjoy a lot of success in TV, if perhaps not as much as when she was the female lead on "My Name is Earl".

thats always been so bloody stupid to me. If Sean Connery can recover from the utter disaster that was Zardoz surely someone can find a role for a pretty blond thing with basic action chops

seriously look at the disasters some of hollywoods leading men and women have been in. Hell halley berry and sharon stone still have carreers and they were in the god awful catwoman. And i dont think Margot Robbys going to have issues despite being in the utterly epic failure of Harley Quinn and her amazing friends
Dr. Silverback has wryly observed that this is like trying to teach lolcats about Shakespeare

Women are far, FAR more vulnerable to bombs than males, given how there’s way fewer big roles and most go to the same batch of women (Jennifer Lawrence replaced Anne Hathaway as the omnipresent star, and now has herself been replaced by others). Berry in particular did suffer a lot due to Catwoman, and Stone nearly went bankrupt- neither got nearly as many roles after, and it was Halle’s last big starring role.

I mean, these people kept working, but “side character in a TV show with 1/2 Big Bang Theory’s audience ain’t the sane thing.

Yay, Hamilton ruled!

Best song live is actually “Burn”- let’s all the singing training out. SUPER emotional.

Burr was fascinating- I can see why people dig him more than Hamilton. Hamilton is all there on the surface. Burr SEETHES and hides everything. He’s a man at war with himself, arguing with himself without knowing it. Like a lot of the other icons who lie to themselves (Elphaba in Wicked). The actor played him as ultra stiff and constantly uncomfortable- amazingly, the only moments he goes all out are when he’s alone.

Complications:
Relationship (Tina Armstrong- Daughter)- Bass is highly protective, and doesn't want Tina going into Hollywood- he wants her to stay a pro wrestler like himself, having trained her from childhood to do it.

Total: Abilities: 56 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 1 / Defenses: 11 (94)

-Blatantly based off of Hulk Hogan, Bass Armstrong is an American-style pro wrestler and a recurring part of Dead or Alive since its beginnings and has been there ever since. Shifting looks along Hogan's wrestling personas (he was initially more like the "Red & Yellow" Hogan, but shifted to the nWo-style Hollywood Hogan) before ending up just like a stocky biker, he is the father of Tina Armstrong, and repeatedly tries to keep her in the wrestling business and away from Hollywood. In an early game, he fails to stop her from becoming a catwalk model like she wants. Later games have him reveling in her fighting success, but raging at her flippantly going from modeling to attempted rock stardom and the like. In one game, he attempts to retire, but joins the tournament as "Mr. Strong" (possibly a riff on Hogan's run as "Mr. America" when forced to "retire" during an angle), and in another, he attempts to become a motorcyclist, but crashes when he thinks he sees Tina doing an adult film. In short, he's basically a Comedy Character, albeit one who's a serious fighter.

-Humorously, in the DOA movie, he was portrayed by Hogan's nWo ally, Kevin Nash. A recurring gag sees him assume that his daughter is a lesbian, after sharing a bed with Christie (after her room is trashed) and seeing Kasumi give her acupuncture ("Does Christie know about this?").

-Bass seems to lose nearly every fight in-canon, despite being one of the strongest guys in the games, so I made him PL 7.5- his strength advantage can still put him past some of the franchise's tiny girls in a pinch.

Defenses:
Dodge +11 (DC 21), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness +3, Fortitude +6, Will +6

Complications:
Enemy (Victor Donovan)- Bayman is after Donovan for betraying him upon the killing of Fame Douglas- Victor first didn't pay him, then tried to have Bayman killed.
Rivalry (Leon)- The two have been competing mercenaries for years.

Total: Abilities: 58 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 15 / Powers: 1 / Defenses: 14 (114)

-One of the "Token Male Characters" constantly around the DOA series, Bayman is a very generic-looking dude. Just an army guy, really. Nothing to make him stand out at all, he's just THERE. Yet has made it through every game in the series, missing only DOA 2 on the main roster (where he was unlockable), which tried to replace him with Leon, who had a similar gimmick. He had lived a rough life, being orphaned at a young age and acting as a Russian commando, then a hired killer. He was under Victor Donovan's command in the first game (alongside Christie), but is defeated by Kasumi in the tournament. However, he does complete his assignment- assassinating Fame Douglas, the head of DOATEC, who ran the tournament. But then Donovan decides to betray him, setting him up to die as well- Bayman survives, but swears revenge.

-Bayman misses the second game (but is an unlockable guy not in the Story Mode), but returns for DOA 3- he is instead hired by Fame's daughter Helena to kill Donovan- after Helena herself beats him in a challenge match, he agrees to become her bodyguard. He saves her from Christie (who had remained by Donovan's side), but the other assassin escapes. In all subsequent games, he's just kind of an odd fit, at one point being captured by DOATEC and tortured- he fights Hayate a few times and works as a private mercenary again. My main memory of him is playing one of the games in the early 2000s with friends and one of my friends had chosen Bayman as his "Charater to Learn".

-Bayman is a PL 8 character with a lot of skills, but isn't an undercover operative the way Christie is, nor a master of stealth like the various shinobi in the series. He is a powerful grappler using a few wrestling moves like the DDT & Stepover Toehold Facelock.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've seen lots of people sing it's praises, and I like some of the songs on youtube.

Yeah, it's pretty great. I saw it pre-pandemic. My two sons know pretty much all the words to the whole thing.
