Background: Tracy Pressler came from a family that worked on the sea doing salvaging work, and while she greatly enjoyed it the reality was that their small family business never was profitable enough to comfortably support their large family. Eventually there came a point where the Pressler family’s debts were more than they could afford and as pressure mounted from various creditors Tracy decided that the only way to solve the family’s problem was for her to take on more dangerous, and profitable, work.

It didn’t take long for her to find a crew to work with and she spent the next two years diving after “lost” ships that brought in several large sums of money, the majority of her cut going back to her family. Then while on a dive Tracy’s diving suit suffered a malfunction and began to fill with water. Panic filled her mind as she realized there was no way she could return to the surface before she would be crushed by the building water pressure inside her suit, then she felt sick for several seconds and felt like she was about to pass out.

When the moment passed Tracy felt fine – she wasn’t cold, she didn’t feel the pressure of the water, none of it. Amazed at her luck, Tracy quickly repaired her suit then returned to the surface where she kept her ordeal a secret while planning how to make the most of it for herself. A few weeks later the super villain Downpour made her debut and for a little while she managed to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars until she ran afoul of the vigilante hero Argus who dealt Tracy her first defeat.

Luckily for her, she was only tried for the attempted theft Argus had prevented and her time in New Alcatraz was short. Unluckily though, Tracy was disowned by her family when they learned how she had been making the money she had sent to them. Now left with only herself to take care of Tracy continued on with her criminal efforts as no salvaging company would hire her despite how extremely useful her powers could be to them turning her into a career criminal.

His decision to use them in the pursuit of personal financial gain was apparently an easy one and he has been a super villain for several years at this point, trying to make enough money to “retire” and live quietly off his ill-gotten gains.

Demolition:
Three sons of the supervillain Wrecker, each of whom did not know about their heritage until Dr. Prometheus kidnapped them to study how generational Alphas manifested their powers. Each of them was subjected to different, painful, stimuli that triggered the manifestation of their powers. Going on a pain-fueled rampage, the three young men destroyed Dr. Prometheus' hidden lab and fought off members of the Vanguard. Deciding that a normal life was not an option for any of them, the trio decided to become supervillains themselves.

Two In One: Amalgam is actually the combined form of the Young brothers, which they stay in for the majority of the time. However, powerful attacks can cause them to separate (triggered by failing a Toughness DC by 15 or a Will DC by 10; if separated they are a PL 10 Powerhouse & PL 10 Energy Controller).

Weakness: Amalgam is vulnerable (+100%) to cold based effects and magnetic based effects.


Background: One of the more interestingly powered students at the Vanguard Academy, the Young brothers were a set of triplets who could each absorb and manipulate solar energy in different ways - Dave internalized that energy to increase his strength and resistance to injury, Dennis could discharge Solar energy in a number of ways (even being able to fly) and Donny internalized Solar energy to enhance his agility and reflexes so that he could run at superhuman speeds.

Besides their individual abilities, the Young brothers were able to somehow merge their bodies into a single form that possessed all of their powers at increased levels. Thankfully, the siblings were intent on using their abilities as part of the Vanguard after their graduation and applied themselves with a dedication beyond their years. However, during their senior year the Young brothers suffered a devastating loss when Donny was targeted by members of S.H.I.E.L.D. while out on a date and was killed alongside his non-Alpha date.

Dave and Dennis were rocked to their core over the loss of their brother, so much so that their parents withdrew them from the Academy for the remainder of the school year. It was thought by the teaching staff that the Young brothers would simply return to retake their senior year, but that was not the case. In fact, a few months after what would have been their eighteenth birthday the remaining brothers made their debut as the supervillain Amalgam - attacking a suspected front operation of S.H.I.E.L.D. that caused thousands of dollars’ worth of collateral damage as well as injuring over two dozen innocent bystanders. When confronted by members of the Vanguard the combined Young brothers revealed that they intended to make not only S.H.I.E.L.D. pay for what they had done to their brother, but also the world at large as the majority of society were to blame for the mistreatment of Alphas and allowing hate groups like S.H.I.E.L.D. to exist in the first place.

Background: Thomas Knight watched his world end when his wife and daughter were killed in a car crash while the driver responsible, a drunk teen, walked away unscathed. A number of grief counselors tried to help Thomas cope with his pain and loss, but he soon grew tired of all the talking about coping skills and survivor’s guilt as he was obsessed with vengeance. Eventually turning to the occult, Thomas drifted from one pretender to another until he found a true practitioner of magic willing to teach him.

After learning the basics of magic, a smattering of spells, and taking a few select artifacts from his teachers collection, Thomas located the teen who had killed his family, and incinerated him in a blaze of magical fire. For several years Thomas hunted down criminals that had seemingly escaped justice some way or another and made them pay for their crimes using his arcane talents.

Then Thomas went to Arcadia and ran afoul of the Brimstone House and they decided to "forcibly recruit" him into the ranks of their enforcers. For two months Thomas was subjected to several forms of torture, both magical and mundane, to break him down but his zealous nature made him a difficult man to break. So much so that he managed to break free and avenge himself upon a few of his torturers.

While searching for a way out of the chapter house Thomas ran afoul of Hemogoblin but managed to escape after a short altercation (greatly helped by the fact the creature was extremely vulnerable to Thomas' fire magic). Once he had settled into one of his safe houses, Thomas discovered several small fragments of the vampire symbiote and began to experiment with them. He quickly learned how the symbiote could grant him more power, Thomas didn't hesitate to help the pieces merge together and heal into an entirely new symbiote that he bonded with. However, unlike Hemogoblin's host, Thomas possessed a stronger will that allowed him to maintain his personality instead of being used as a meat puppet. Drunk on his newfound power, Thomas rededicated himself to his personal crusade but now using the name Redcap.

The Crazy 8:

A group of clown-themed supervillains that has been around for almost fifteen years with the only constants being that the members exhibit an "evil clown" persona. How the members have been recruited, who they were before they came into possession of their powers and skills are unknown to anyone and it seems that they have funding from an unknown source; as their crimes are almost never earn them a profit as more often than not their crimes focus on torture, abduction, terrorization, destruction of public property as well as elaborate "games" involving some of these elements. Add to that is that all the members are basically homicidal maniacs with a taste for mayhem and chaos has left C.A.S.T.L.E. struggling to discover how the group has perpetuated itself since its founding; as soon as one dies, another mysteriously appears to replace them (and no, there have never been eight active members at any time. It's just a name to them and nothing more.).

Currently the members of the Crazy 8 are as follows - Clowncar [a duplicator], Mad Jack [a weapon master], Punchline [a powerhouse], Harlequin [a mage that specializes in “card magic”], Bogan [an illusion maker], Slapstick [a shapeshifter] and their leader the Jester [a gadgeteer]. Former members include Mime [could take control of others physical actions by miming the actions he wants them to perform], Punch & Judy [teamworking fighters], Mr. 451 [fire generator], Doofus [could befuddled the sensesnof others], and the Prankster [used weaponized clown themed gag props].

Background: Nobody has ever heard Mad Jack utter a single word. Ever. Still he none the less seems to enjoy what he does as part of the Crazy 8, often times working as the Jester’s enforcer thanks to his impressive combat skills. He does seem to prefer working with Harlequin the most, perhaps due to her long rang abilities balancing out his up-close combat style. Despite the fact that he never talks, Mad Jack does have a Calling Card like the other members of the Crazy 8. His responses are either a single or double snapping of his fingers for yes or no replies.

Background: How Harlequin learned her unique form of magic isn’t known but it is effective none the less, as she is one of the more versatile members of the Crazy 8 – able to hold off whatever hero she is fighting or enabling the group’s escapes in the blink of an eye after a flash bomb. She often times is pair off with Mad Jack (it isn’t clear if this is because the silent man prefers working alongside her more than the others or something else) and she is just fine with that as she prefers to keep herself at a distance from her opponents.

Sweet Clowngirl: Punchline is close with his teammate Clowncar, and is highly protective of her. He will do anything she asks of him without question.

Temper: Punchline is easy to anger, which normally leads to him causing lots of collateral damage.


Background: The powerhouse of the Crazy 8, Punchline happily follows the simple orders given to him with a tenacity that rivals a machine. Unfortunately, his limited intelligence makes Punchline even more dangerous as he is easy to set off as he can become easily frustrated by several different situations (which normally leads to more collateral damage caused). Luckily, Punchline is fascinated by his teammate Clowncar (who is aware of Punchline’s obsession with her) so he is normally kept with her on missions as she has the best chance of keeping him in line (or as much, or little, as she wants to in all honesty), although Jester will periodically have Punchline by his side.

Without either Clowncar or Jester’s influence Punchline can quickly become confused when presented with a mental challenge or an opponent that seems to be able to handle the physical beatings he can dish out, causing him to spiral quickly into a destructive rampage that the other members of the Crazy 8 will cheer on.

Besides her powers, which allow her to be a one clown army, and the fact that she normally is left in charge of the massively strong Punchline make her a difficult opponent to face off against.

She always takes advantage of the fact that she can seem to be somewhere she is not, setting up her opponents for nasty surprises when they think they have gotten the upper hand against her.

Quirk ~Paranoid: Quantum thinks almost everyone is out to get him and sometimes sabotages potential alliances due to his inability to work with most other parties because of it. He sons are the only exceptions to this.

Relationships: Over the years Quantum has fathered a few children, most of whom developed energy powers similar to his and he has recruited them to fight by his side.


Background: There have always been those in the American Government who were unhappy with how the Vanguard are managed - they have always pushed for more governmental control over the group and how they operate but were too small to make any real headway in their goals. To that end in 1994 a group of these people quietly created Project: Shining Star. After a rigorous set of physical, psychological, and political testing, twenty volunteers from all of the branches of the American military were told that they were taking part in a wargame scenario to test how well soldiers could perform in nuclear holocaust situation. What actually happened was that the group was exposed to the effects of a nuclear blast at short range. The lucky ones died immediately while the unlucky ones lingered on for months, and the very unlucky others held on for almost a year, before eventually dying agonizingly painful deaths.

Then one man, Randall Emerson, who was amongst the last to die, mysteriously return to life the following day. His memories were broken and difficult to piece together, but Emerson could remember seeing the explosion... then feeling it. To him it was an experience so powerful that his body couldn’t handle it and had passed out. Emerson never did regain consciousness until after his death and he didn’t feel like a man who’d died and somehow revived, he felt like he was bursting with energy. That led to several tests that determined the extent and depth of Emerson’s powers, during which time he realized how he’d been exploited and now being used as a guinea pig. Deciding that he had no interest in staying, Emerson lashed out, projecting bursts of energy that smashed down the barriers between him and the outside world and made his escape.

The next time the world saw Randall Emerson, he was calling himself Quantum and raging against the country he’d served and sacrificed for only to be disfigured and forgotten by them when he became “inconvenient”. He did this by focusing his hostilities at military and intelligence installations, causing loss of life, but more importantly to him, substantial and highly visible property damage. He wanted to draw those behind Project: Shining Star out into the public arena, but those few remaining were firmly embedded in the country’s political power structure, reacted instead by using the press as a weapon – making Quantum out to be a mentally unbalanced man who is extremely dangerous (the irony here is not lost upon them), though they make Emerson’s mental issues to be more delusional than the paranoia he actually suffers from (and is done in an effort to discredit the man’s public rants about what has happened to him).

Over the years Quantum has fought against several rosters of the Vanguard and has been incarcerated a few times in his two decades plus career but he has never been a long time resident due to the sheer power Quantum possesses. Added to that is the fact that in the last few years Quantum has recruited a group of young adults, all of whom are his children, who are fiercely loyal to him, are almost as powerful and are dedicated to keeping Quantum out of New Alcatraz.

He knows he is powerful but not in the same way as his half-brother's Gigaton and Radium, but he plays to his strengths by aiding them in a fight. Thanks to his powers Billy is the group's stealth expert and is the one who handles reconning a target before the rest of the group moves in.

Background: Carl Perkins cares the least about the wrongdoings of the American Government out of all his half siblings, he just enjoys living his life under his own rules. As the most physically powerful of his siblings, Carl doesn't hesitate to use his fists and explosive powers to bombard his opponents. Normally he is the first one to cause a fight (even if it is counter to the goals of the group) and enjoys nothing more than a good fight.

Background: The oldest son of supervillain Quatum, Max Gerber has seen the struggles of his father and once his own powers manifested joined the elder man's crusade. As the eldest of the group, Max normally keeps his half siblings under control when Quatum isn't around and is a fairly decent field leader. The fact he's almost as big of a conspiracy nut as his father is one of his major downfalls as he can be distracted into ranting about the various "problems" of the American government instead of coordinating his teammates.
