[IC] Terror From The Skies

Post by FuzzyBoots »

GM

It was a bright, fresh spring day in Freedom City, a perfect day for a stroll through Liberty Park or a jog around the bay. However, as this lovely day progressed, massive dark clouds heavy with rain began to gather. With surprising suddenness, a violent storm erupted, bringing the city to a near-complete standstill.

The mayor declared a state of emergency, air traffic control grounded all flights, and citizens fled for shelter. All types of first responders are already stretched beyond their capabilities, and the authorities are now asking for help from the city’s super-powered community.

A thick column of black smoke, visible even through the powerful storm, whips into the sky above a flickering fire atop Freedom City Medical Center. A small plane of unusual design hangs precariously between the two towers, its fuselage held up over ten stories above the main building! The driving wind and rain make the wrecked craft groan alarmingly with each gust on the east tower, one of the craft’s engines is the source of the fire, and a yell of pain and shouting echoes from beyond it.
OOC wrote:It is up to you to decide how your characters became aware of the situation. Presumably, you've been dealing with the storm when the incident at Freedom City Medical Center came to light. Perhaps you were calling by the authorities to lend aid. Maybe you saw it on TV in the emergency live broadcast. Maybe you were there as it happened. Describe in your first post how it is you learn about the situation, and what you are planning to do.

Martian Man
HP: 1
Status: Normal

Gin was walking around the shopping district looking for supplies with his lab assistant Anna Himengway to bring back to his laboratory at ASTRO Labs when suddenly the storm hits. As the citizens run for shelter and after Gin tells Anna to find shelter as well, he opens his buttoned-up lab coat to reveal his Martian family's coat of arms symbol. Along with the rest of his costume, he had been wearing underneath his outfit.

He flies through the storm searching for any in need of help saving citizens left and right. He hears the shouting coming from the plane and flies over to see what the situation is and how to best approach it.

HP: 1

It was already a busy day for Darren but the sudden onset of a violently progressing storm just tipped the scales. First responders were out in force and, as luck would have it, Darren was just finished delivering a patient when the unusual plane made it's crashing entrance into the medical center.

The situation was precarious, in more ways than one, and he knew it was no time not to act. He still took some precaution for himself, dashing behind his rig before pointing his palms toward the concrete ambulance bay ramp under him. He clenches his fists and raises them up, the material beneath him bucking and breaking as it rips free and begins to rise and cling to his body. After only a few seconds, Darren is completely encased in the concrete and cement, the ground around him broken and misshapen. On the plus side, Streetside was here.

The bulky form moved out of his impromptu and poorly hidden spot and began using his extra strength to move people into the building, barring that, he would ensure he was between falling debris and those around him.

The new Egyptian collection of artifacts had arrived the week before. Henry and his staff had finished cataloging them. Now, the various pieces were being placed for display. The main display room darkened. Looking up, Henry saw the skylight, moments ago bustling with sunshine, now filled with unnatural-looking clouds. A strike of lighting burst through the skylight, raining glass below. "Don't worry about the exhibits," Henry shouted. "Get all these people out of here!" He pointed towards the door to the basement. "Shelter in there. I'll check for others." A quick search revealed that everyone had evacuated to the basement area. Henry ran to his office and changed into his Eagleman costume.

Eagleman soared to the sky, buffeted by strong winds. Scanning the city, he noticed smoke rising from the medical center. Moving in that direction, he spotted a plane that had crashed into the entrance of the building.

Landing, he approached the plane, curious about who may be inside and if they were still alive. "Has anyone checked inside the plane yet?"

In the course of their flight, both Eagleman and Martian Man find that the storm is severely hampering their ability. The driving rain reduces the senses significantly, and they're force to travel at a quarter their usual speed due to the constantly shifting winds.

As Eagleman and Martian Man near the plane, they see each other roughly at the same time. The craft is noticeably strange in appearance, oddly organic in its smooth shape. Its two wings are currently penetrating the two towers of the Medical Center, and holding the craft up. On the right side, near the middle, something is on fire, the flames spreading across the roof of the vehicle, only barely kept in check by the pouring rain, which sizzles against the hot metal. Near where the fire is, there's a large hole which would likely reveal the interior were it not for the thick smoke billowing out from where the fire is. Inside, there's yelling audible over the driving rain.

Down on the streets, Streetside can barely see up to the 10th story through the driving rain, but surprisingly little debris has fallen so far, something he credits to the sturdy build of the hospital. Whatever is up there is glowing in a way reminiscent of a fire, despite the downpour.

I'll just ballpark that climbing the stairs is about 150 feet of total movement.

Eagleman gives Martian Man a thumbs up. Eyeing the plane, the buildings, and the structural damage, Eagleman chose what he believed to be the best position to hold up the plane safely using his strength. Calling upon his inner reserve, Eagleman used all his might to keep the plane steady to give Martian Man the time he needed to rescue those aboard.
I can roll to see if I find the best spot to hold up the plane safely, if necessary. I'm using my extra 2 ranks of lifting strength to hold the plane up, making it STR 8 total.

Jay had been walking down the street, headed to his museum for work when the storm hit. He didn't think much of it aside from the trouble it gave him. That was until he noticed the thick column of smoke rising from the Medical Center. He exhaled through his teeth and popped his collar, coating himself with enchantments and rushed on as he headed to the center as quickly as possible.

Eagleman scanned the bottom of the craft for just the right place to apply his strength to maintain the plane's stability. He eyed what he thought to be the best spot. Eagleman moved there and put his hands under the plane.

As Martian Man enters the plane, Eagleman hears parts of the vehicle creak alarmingly despite Martian Man entering using his flight. His first glance over the plane doesn't bode well. While the plane is apparently made of sturdier stuff than it looks, it's more or less just wedged into place, and he can see where the hospital walls are starting to bend under the weight of the plane and its contents, and one of the wings is noticeably bent, and might be gradually bending more. It's going to take some considerably finesse to either lower to the ground, or two lift to the top of one of the towers.

As Martian Man floats into the flame, he can feel the heat of the fire as it crackles and pops, consuming something in the substance of the vehicle, although fortunately he doesn't have to get close enough that it starts to damage him. He's also mildly grateful for not having to breathe oxygen as he proceeds through a thick cloud of smoke, although a tingle on the back of his throat suggests that the chemicals being released by the combustion won't be good for the health long-term. Shortly after getting past the obscuring smoke, he finds himself in what looks analagous to a cockpit, with a man in vaguely roman garb, complete with armored skirt and helmet currently held in layers of nets that look like they're made from translucent plastic. He's groaning within the nets, and looks only semi-conscious. Surrounding him, holding guns that have ropes that currently attach to the nets, are five men in silvery blue power armor that completely covers their body. One of them, with red highlights on his shoulders, looks up and points at you.
"Hero!" he says in a voice obviously run through a voice modulator, "Take him down before he can cause any trouble!" All five men detach the current net on their gun and begin raising the barrels...

Meanwhile, as Streetside barrels into the hospital, and heads for the stairs, he finds himself starting to remember some of the drawbacks to this form. The tiles beneath his feet begin to crack as he puts nearly a ton of weight on each foot, the damage even worse due to his need to hurry. The stairwheel door bends under his push, and the stairwell creaks alarmingly as he begins to ascend, knowing it's going to take him a bit of time to get up as high as the plane was.

On the street, Arcanum sees a large man made of concrete, who he's pretty sure is named Streetside, enter the hospital at a run. High in the air, at least ten stories up, he sees the tiny form of a winged man starting to brace himself under the trapped aircraft and push up with his flight... it's hard to see much more through the driving rain.
OOC wrote:Eagleman, the DC to move the plane is 17 for Strength or Move Object, with a -2 penalty due to the weather.

Martian Man, you spot five people inside the craft. They roll a 22 (!) for their initiative. Please roll yours.

As regards Streetside, technically, 150 feet, even with Athletics, will take you a little over 2 rounds so you're going to be getting into combat a bit late. Sorry, but he was built as a bit of a low mobility character.

Lastly, I'm just getting Arcanum at the base of the hospital as the others are headed up.

Deciding it's now or never, Eagleman starts to move the plane down toward the ground. If it falls, at least it's already headed in the right direction. Gathering all his strength, Eagleman slowly begins to lower the plane. [Engaging extra 2 ranks of lifting strength.]

Strength: 1D20+8 = [17]+8 = 25
[Forgot to put in the -2 penalty, so the total is 23.]

Eagleman slowly, gently, brings the plane down to the ground, making a loud groan as he sets the plane down.

"Martian Man!" Eagleman calls. "What happening in there?"

Arcanum

He rushes up to the bottom of the hospital, trying to survey the area to see what is happening at all, trying to pick out anyone who is in need of help or in immediate danger. He sees the hulking concrete monster as the plane being held by Eagleman begins to land. He shouts to either of them, holding onto his coat against the batter of the rain, "What's going on? Where do people need most help?"

Martian Man

In response to the clear danger he sees time for Martian Man slows to a near crawl as his psionic mind prepares him for combat. In that short moment, he notices the armor these thugs are wearing, it looks vaguely familiar, along with the man caught in the net. An Atlantean? here? why and how? This question would have to wait as the battle was upon him.

Martian Man's main concern was the safety of the man caught in the net. In the blink of an eye, he speeds over to him, uses his tactile telekinesis, places a single hand on the net, and attempts to pull the man free from its clutches.

As Martian Man darts forward and rips the netting away, the vehicle lurches, being lifted from where it was lodged by Eagleman, and being slowly lowered to the street. After a brief stumble, the figure with the blaze on his armor points at Martian Man.
"Take care of him! I will resubdue the prisoner." The other four raise their guns and point them at Martian Man, firing to bracket him, two of them firing nets at him and the other two emitting blinding flashes of light. The fifth figure quickly binds the ambassador in another net and scoops him up into a fireman's carry.
OOC wrote:Two will fire their net projectile, and two their blinding flash, each pair having one attempt to Aid the other. The Teamwork advantage gives them a bonus to aid.

12 is good enough for a +2. 14+2=16 will hit for a DC 20 Dodge check. First degree of failure is Hindered/Vulnerable. Second degree is Immobile/Defenseless.

11 is good to aid, but 6+2 = 8 will miss.

The fifth figure will use a routine check to net the ambassador again, and then use a Move action to scoop them up.
