Princess Fedora

Aparecida reaches out to Cecil for the folder.
"D'you mind?" she says, and taking the folder she quickly ruffles through it, doing a surface level check for skipped page numbers and things that look out of place. Not that investigative work was really my forte. I was more off in the one being sent after the person being investigated, but you pick up a few things.

"No aspersions cast on your secretary, but sometimes things get misplaced, and I figure better to handle it here than having to fax things over when we're onsite. Not that it's easy to find a facsimile machine these days..."

After that, she hands the folder back, and jerks her to the door.
"Anyone carrying your magic carpet, or are we sharing a cab?" To James, she adds, "We'll keep receipts for our expenses, of course." Superheroes, organized crime, everything comes down to the numbers, and business, and paperwork.

"We could use the photocopier to have a backup if you like," Anne said. "And more than one of us could look through the file at the same time."

Princess Fedora

Aparecida gave a quiet huh of surprise as she saw the sparse information and briefly showed it to the others.

"Probably no need to make copies. We're doing the legwork on this one." She holds the sheet up so that Rizzo can see it. "Anyone know anything about this?" she asks. Rizzo gives a series of short squeaks to her, and then leaps off of her shoulder and scurries out the door, startling an incoming delivery person, and nearly causing a spill of the carried coffee. Aparecida winces slightly, and her smile goes crooked.

She then tucks the papers back into the folder, hands it to Cecil, and taps the brim of her hat to James.
"On the job, boss."

Cecil Mortlake

Cecil moved to place the folder in one of his suit pockets, unless anyone else asked for it.

He watched the rat run off, with purpose. He could hardly call it the strangest thing he'd seen, even today alone.

"Best to hire a hansom cab then. Traveling over-ground gives us a chance to take our impressions of the neighborhood as we approach. If we identify what Miss De Santos's usual patterns of life were, we can determine where and when she might have diverted --or been diverted..."

He readied himself to follow Princess Fedora out the door.

Anne flips through the folder to memorize it before handing it back. "We should get going. Do you think we should call ahead?"

Seven Singh

Uncharacteristically, Seven had been quiet since the office and the ride. Stuck in her own head, it seemed. But she had a job to do.

She looked at her partners - that had a nice ring to it - examining the papers. A few more details were noticed, maybe. Being lucky was her deal.
If Seven is conscious and can see or hear you (or for some weird reason, smell or taste), and you roll below 8, you default to 8.

Wednesday, January 2, 2019. Mid Morning. New York City. The Bronx. Tremont.

Tremont was a lower income neighborhood. Not the best, but not the worst. No sparkling new buildings here, not really. Concrete, asphalt, and brick. Mostly residential. 5 and 6 story apartment buildings. Lots of hills. Of course, there were bodegas. Shops. Restaurants. People hanging out on the street despite the cold of January in New York City. Not the most lively scene, but again, it was cold. The traffic getting here hadn’t actually been too bad, though that may have been because everybody seemed to be going in the other direction. Still, they were here. Specifically, in front of the apartment building of Jorge, Camila, and Nora de Santos. Now, what to do first?

"Anyone know what the agency charges for our services?" Anne says. "This doesn't seem like the kind of neighborhood where you find people who can afford investigators like us."

Aparecida tries to remember if the paperwork mentioned a fee.
"They may do pro bono cases," she says, "And of course z when family is involved, people will do anything to help them." Her brain dishes back to the hasty departure from her small town in Brazil, get bother pushing a boat ticket into one hand, and Aparecida noticing bare spots on the shelf where family heirlooms had sat. She shook her head, and banished memories of what she'd learned had befallen them after her departure.

She got a welcome report from past trauma as a sparrow swooped onto her shoulder, and chirped at her.
"Doesn't sound like anyone in the neighborhood has been talking about the girl, at least not in a way that they recognize that there was anything important about it." She grimaced, and added, "One of limitations of using this sort of informant. They're not human. They don't always look at the same things. You would not believe how many reports I get about good nut caches, or garbage that isn't properly covered."

Cecil Mortlake

"We called it noblesse oblige, in my time," murmured Cecil at the mention of the financials. "A sometimes...fraught notion."

He quickly scanned the surrounding environs. It was unlikely that any obvious evidence had been missed, or else they would not have been brought in. But still, extra eyes never hurt.

After Princess Fedora gave the sparrow's report, he gave a minor chuckle.

"Even the smallest pieces of data may prove key. The Great Detective himself once solved a case based on the rate at which parsely sank into melted butter. For all we yet know, perhaps uncovered garbage plays a critical role in this affair..."

"So, which of us to take lead?" Anne says. "We don't want to bombard them with questions from all four of us at once. Which of us seems most likely they would open up to?"

Seven Singh

Not one to give up a call such as 'lead', Seven raised her hand and nodded. "OK, I got this," she said confidently enough for the immediate vicinity to hear.

Walking to the door, protest or not, she knocked. "Hello," she seemed to be rehearsing, "we're from NPC Investigations about Nora de Santos. We'd like to ask a few questions." She ran it back once or twice until the door opened. If it opened.

Anne is planning to start mind reading whoever opens the door. Her mind reading is subtle 2 so no will notice. (And this is why she dodged being the one asking the questions.)

Given the name, it would make sense for me to take lead, having a commonality, apparently in nationality... well, sort of. Santos could be Spanish, Portugese, Mexican, someone who is a fan of the wrestler El Santo when they decided to change their name... Aparecida's internal monologue is interrupted by Seven apparently taking the initiative. She quietly told the sparrow to go on its business, and settled herself into a friendly, but businesslike, posture, letting the natural charisma of her transformed being ooze out.

The one who opened the door was Jorge de Santos. A man in his late 30s, he looked like a man who had once been very athletic but had slipped a bit with age. He was definitely Hispanic in appearance, however, and he wore generic coveralls with his first name stitched in over the breast pocket. It took him a second to take in the four…eclectic…looking people in front of his family’s apartment. His accent was pure Puerto Rican Spanish. “Ay, bendito. We don’t have much money. Please.” He sounded both tired and quietly scared in the way only someone with a missing close relative could be scared.
