Pounce continued to prowl through the woods, intent on following the trail. But as they encountered trap after trap, she slowed a bit, moving more cautiously. She thought-sent out a message the way the Mind had taught her, to relay to the others...

"There are many traps here and some of them are quite clever. These serviles must be very afraid of something, or perhaps there are not many of them, so they cannot provide guards and must use traps instead. Maybe there is another approach that they use themselves that is not so dangerous, but if we keep going this way we must be careful- sooner or later we will miss one, or we will encounter a living sentry instead of a simple trap."

... your Shaper responds mildly to Craze's inquiry about where they were going and what might be at their destination. The scent trail Pounce was following did not provide those kinds of details. Compared to all of you, D'Tan's movements through the forest were noisy. He showed no inclination towards stealth, though he walked cautiously and with care. The chitinous armor that he wore has a soft wisping rattle to it as well. The youth's dark eyes were often on the move. Either studying his surroundings or monitoring the actions of those of you that were around him.


As information about the placement of traps is fed back to the Mind they begin forming a mental map of the terrain and location of each stationary threat. Initially the setup of traps seems random, until they focus attention on the terrain. The majority of the traps are set up along paths of least resistance. Routes trespassers would naturally be inclined to follow. Game trails. Along streams. Mid-way down a hill. Mind is able to deduce a less dangerous route and sharing their insights helps Pounce to chart a less dangerous path forward. But there is no guarantee of safety, as Mind has noted several lethal devices that do not fit in with the majority. Outlawyers that seem set up as a redundancy in the event someone noticed the pattern.

D'Tan is allowing all of you to manage the situation, assuming that you will act in his best interest. So don't expect him to micromanage the group. Also be aware that while he isn't a bumbling baby, he has demonstrated zero aptitude towards Stealth. The armor you convinced him to wear doesn't help in that regard either.

Question for the group: do you want to talk amongst yourselves or discuss the situation more, or are you ready for me to narrate us forward?

You press on, with the Mind's observations in mind, Pounce leading the way a fair distance ahead of the group. As you progress you spot and manage to avoid several more primitive but deadly traps. After about three hours of your dangerous trek through the woods the smell of Serviles grows stronger and there is something else. Fermented plant matter. The strong smell distracts Pounce enough that her attention wavers at the wrong time and her paw pressed down on a taunt length of vine. A split second later a bent length of green wood is suddenly released from it's bent state. It comes whipping at one of the feline's calves, an iron knife tied to the end, making it strike like an improvised pickaxe propelled by the release of the wood's tension.

After the trap is sprung there can be heard a tinny rattling as metal cups tied on a string connected to the trap are jostled.

Even as she felt the pressure of the twine under her paw, she was already starting to move. Without knowing what the tripwire was connected to, however, it was bit tough to guess which direction to move IN... Most bipeds, like the serviles, tended to flinch backwards or down, and traps they set might tend to aim that way- and none of them could leap like she could.

Operating on instinct, she leapt straight upwards, as best she could from a standing start- the snapping lash of green wood passed just under her feet, twanging back as she came down. It wasn't all that graceful, but it worked. As she heard the rattle of the metal cups she shook her head. "We're getting close to their lair- I can smell it, some kind of plant stuff. And that will alert them, they may come to look. Do we want to fade back, or set our own ambush?"

Ever the cheeky creature, Craze circled around Pounce as it evaded the trap. "Good dancing skills. If we run into a living sentry you show them.", quipped Craze in the air as the group proceeded.

It felt a pang of negativity through it's neural network upon picking up the noisy bells. Evidently these traps were more sophisticated than it'd initially expected. Was this normal behavior for Serviles, even ones that seemed to reject associating with the village dwellers?

Reasoning mattered not, it was instead time for them to act. And quickly. "We are about to, if we do not choose to hide our presence. There is little time to act. It is my recommendation, it is my suggestion, it is my request, it is my- That we obscure ourselves. Hide. Make them think it was a wild animal that escaped. An ambush, at worst. A successful bluff, at best."

"Good plan!" agrees Meat Shield. They move to hide themselves in the tree branches above the trail they have been following, keeping their eye out for danger all around, but especially in the direction they are heading.

Pounce scampered up onto a convenient branch and settled in- but her tail wouldn't stop moving...

Pounce and Mind impress upon the group the eminent threat and need for prompt action. Not discussion. Everyone moves to cover, including D'Tan who hunkers down and climbs into a dense set of ferns ... but his armor chitters and chatters with every movement he makes.

You wait, silent and still as you can manage. Patients wearing. Then Meat Shield notices movement up ahead. Glimpses of dull metal weapons. Brown leather armor blending in with the natural colors of wood bark and dirt. a group of ten hooded figures make their way quietly, carefully, through the woods. Meat Shield can tell the others have been spotted, as the bandits move to strike at them from behind. They're poised to strike ... if Meat Shield doesn't do something quick their companions and the Shaper are the ones who will be suffering from a sneak attack!
