"No thanks," Khemis tells Deborah. "I'll return to volunteering for now. I've got some things to think about..."

"Though if we could all meet up and talk again later that would be great..."

And she returns to the Plaza and volunteers some more.

Deborah says to Khemis, "How does 9 pm tonight sound? Same place we met before? I'll send an invite to the others."

Deborah sends out the invite for a meeting around 9pm at the plaza. She then spends time editing the video. Her normal editor gives her help from a second seat at the table. But most of the work she does herself. It's been a while since she was this hands on with a video.

8:35 PM:

Helen eventually left the Federal Building with a sour taste in her mouth.

Dealing with the smug federal boys usually will do that. The details were still being worked out between Washington DC, Chicago and Quantico with the constant phone calls and live online conference chats but from what she had gathered a special taskforce to handle "The Sunstormer Situation" is currently being organized.

Of course sunstormers are needed to police themselves. But Helen knew that fear, suspicion and deeply hidden hatred over something they cannot directly control is what really motivated the government, not trashy comic book idealism.

Paladino could live with all that. What really stuck in her craw was the fact that the feds were trying with their long talks with City Hall and the Mayor's press corps to prepare a press conference where Helen was to publicly reveal herself as the first (and most likely the only) sunstormer working for Chicago PD "to address concerns about easing tensions with the sunstormers and the normal populace.".

Bullcrap.

She was not a people person by any stretch of the imagination. From her limited experience with the comic books (which she considered a waste of time and money. Why would bother to read or collect such juvenile garbage when you can see a movie about it nowadays?), she would think of herself as the Comedian from the Watchmen, one of the very few comics she did manage to read to kill some time before watching the actual initial film itself on bootleg. Both printed and movie versions were crap anyway.

The Comedian. Ha. All of this was such a sick joke.

Yeah. She'll play along with the gag and do the press conference. Why not?

She started to go home, then a sudden impulse overcame her.

Why not indeed? She had nothing to hide after all.

Helen did a little hop and a skip to mentally prepare herself then let out a shrill laugh as she suddenly jumped some thirty feet in the air across the Plaza. People took notice and some even took out cameras to record the event. She didn't care and continued to make ever higher leaps, approaching fifty feet and landing safely.

"AIRBORNE!!!" she yelled in jubilation as she jumped over cars in the busy street.

In leaps and bounds, Helen "bounced" her way back home.

Khemis, just beginning to finish up at the Plaza before heading off to meet with the others, raises an eyebrow at the antics of Officer Palladino, but does nothing to interfere with her antics. 'Is she having a nervous breakdown, or just reveling in her Sunstormer powers?' she wondered, watching her bound off into the distance before turning away.

Vickie Pulaski (Charger)
HP: 1; LP: 1; Condition: Normal

Somewhen during the course of her afternoon of pretending that she was still just a normal college student, Vickie popped into the library and borrowed one of the public terminals for bit of quick research- cheap prepaid phones and where to find them. She knew that she could have just asked her roommate, but she didn't want to risk the potential friendly teasing and curiosity that would entail.

Once it was dark, she suited up and headed out. Winter-ready boots, fleece-lined tights, sweater, gloves, and her balaclava/mask- with a heavier coat and a more generic COVID mask stuffed into a backpack.

It was easy enough to follow the highways south out of Chicago- once it was dark she could stay low enough to avoid most radar tracking, but still be hard to see from the ground. Even post-Sunstorm, the highway lights and cars made it easy to stay on target. She left her own phone in the dorm, and her wallet, instead carrying more than enough cash.

She was in the air for about half an hour, keeping well below the sound barrier- but Louisville was only about 200 miles as the Sunstormer flies. She landed a block or two away, picking a convenient spot away from streetlights and so on. Bundled in a heavy winter coat, masked like any other sensible person in COVID times, she walked into the store. It was a little weird, being in a big-box store with the lights fairly low- it was obvious they were running at least some of the place off of generators, but it was actually pretty crowded.

Finding what she wanted didn't take long, and the bored teenage cashier didn't bat an eyelash at a cash purchase. No receipt, thanks...

Another half hour and she was back in Chicago-Land. Walking down a fairly crowded downtown street, texting on her (new) phone.

Sending a message to the number she had taken down last night (Khemis). "Charger here. We doing N E thing 2 Nite ?"

*Yes, meeting again, same place, same time, things to discuss,* texts back Khemis in a way that hopefully tells anyone eavesdropping absolutely nothing useful.

Sunny

At first, Sunny didn't realize his phone had buzzed with a text message. After all, he'd checked the device very often throughout the day after he'd gotten back home and hadn't really gotten any messages back, and the few notifications he did get were work emails and the occasional nonsense from old chat-groups or phishing attempts. So he could probably be excused for ignoring it for a little bit while he was working.

...Until the next time he checked it to get the confirmation code for two-step authentication and realized he'd gotten a text from Deborah. He barely remembered to use the code before it expired in his mad scramble to unlock his device and read the message he'd sent.

A few hours later, Sunny had finished his work, taken a quick shower, changed into a makeshift vigilante-outfit, and was slipping away like usual. It wasn't terribly difficult to retrace his steps (so to speak) to head back to Millennium Park, but in the interests of keeping people from figuring out his patterns, Sunny did his best to fly around randomly for a while before hand, varying his altitude, speed and heading whenever he felt like it (or really whenever he ran into a bird in his flight path).

This led to him finding a bit of trouble along the way that was, thankfully, quickly dealt with. Seems like more hoodlums were out and about as the night grew dark and the cold set-in, as most folks hurried for their homes and huddled indoors to stay warm. It rather astounded Sunny how many of them had firearms now, now that handguns were much use against Sunny when he could catch bullets with his bare hands, leaving Sunny with little choice but to take them away after knocking the muggers and thieves out wherever he found them. Sunny figured he'd find an out-of-the-way dumpster to leave them in for a short spell (the lid of which was wrenched shut by hands that could bend metal) as he made his "appointment".

And like usual, Sunny decided that the best way to maintain his cover in Millennium Park was to basically walk into the park like a normal person, albeit with slightly different clothes than before. With a hoodie on, hand bundled into pockets, head down and staring at a smartphone as he walked along the sidewalks, he didn't really look any different from a regular person, after all.

As the time for the meeting begins to approach, Khemis says her goodbyes to the other volunteers, and texts her roommates to let them know she won't be back until later, before walking away and fading into the darkness. Moving unseen, she jogs the few hundred metres to the meeting place, jumps the fence, then lurks in the trees surrounding the fountain until she sees the others start to arrive...

Deborah finishes the video and posts it just in time for her to make it to the meeting. Her face is bundled up as she leaves the building and heads to the park.
