Gumshoe is also a Phoenixverse canon rookie hero. He is the third example of a “sample PC”. He stretches, he’s got detective skills, what’s not to like? I figure he’s a mutant and probably a private detective. He can get around town quite quickly, and can fight in melee or at range with Elongation. Electricity simply can’t harm him, and he’ll probably shrug off punches under +7 damage. I think he’s neat. You, however, get to decide his Background, Tactics, and Personality for your Phoenixverse.

Not so much to report this time around. Good news? Plenty of build work done for the Roth folks. The fifth member of Bloodfang Alpha has been decided on. More names assigned. Bad news. I'm at an impasse with Taranis, unfortunately, and need to do some research for Ryan's other half (so to speak) before I can build it at all. So, y'all have plenty of time to catch up on the now completed Heroes of Britain while I work, I guess.

I really like Syed. Yes, a lone wolf detective. But also someone who really turned his life around. Shows what can happen when a hero doesn't just kill all the enemies they fight - some can become heroes. And I like the idea of this rakish detective in the UK, with Nawaz being a source that other heroes might use and never realize is a superhero too. Like if Oswald Cobblepot was the Batman (sort-of, I know its a rough comparison).
EternalPhoenix wrote: Sun Mar 12, 2023 7:16 am Mary Poppins? I don't even know what to say to that. I'd never do something that saccharine. Am I the weird one for pretending my long umbrella is a sword sometimes?

...okay, maybe there was a riif on her in the Mystery Men Era/Golden Age I dunno.
I mean, as someone with eldritch powers and retro-genteel stylings. I know Alan Moore used Mary Poppins as a divine figure in one volume of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Not necessarily a super-nanny. Inspiration can come from anywhere! Including the song that did shape UQ - and I never would have thought to turn that into a superhero, so I enjoy your imagination there.
EternalPhoenix wrote: Sun Mar 12, 2023 7:16 am It's a genuinely creative powerset, I think, and I'm quite proud of it.
You should be!
EternalPhoenix wrote: Sun Mar 12, 2023 7:16 am For the record, yes. Paragon types are terrible at standing under the radar. I'd have to actually nail down a year for that and I don't wanna right now. But if you want to have Cecil refer to him feel free. A man who read the newspaper every day would have also known of Emerson Knight. His actual knighting was long after Cecil was frozen, but a man who found a mystic armor and had been heroing for over a full year by that time would have been in the paper a time or three. Not Keaira, however. She'd been gone for 300 years, and only returned after Cecil was on ice.
Good to know! Whether or not it becomes relevant, we'll have to see!

And looking forward to the next installments.

Okay, got to the youngest daughter and this guy. The Alchemist Knight is a pretty unique one- mixing a gadgeteer with "Armored Knight". It seems like communication is kind of an issue in this family- nobody seems to actually EXPLAIN stuff, so the innocent little girl is running scared into adventures to prop up her parents, who don't need propping up. This jibes with the eldest not understanding how to be "worthy" of the Knight role.

Interesting that Templar is so powerful. His skills are shockingly high up there, but I noticed you push guys to +15 a lot. Is that your default for "this person is really, really good" or is that the old PL limit on Skills?

He's a bit simpler on the surface than everyone else, kinda- not a gadgeteer and not a lot of fancy tricks- just a superstrong Armor/Weapon Guy. But as the bio says, he has all the "Combat Tricks" instead, making him more like a Knightly Captain America in concept compared to the others. The backstory of the "Brave powerless lad stepping up" is a good one, and kind of makes it clear that he just did a one-off and was awarded the armor, which would annoy Emily, who fought her whole life for that job.

It's hard, you know? I don't know about your life experience, but mine? The brighter parents shine, the more the children don't want to disappoint them. Emily and Sophie grew up hearing nothing but how amazing their parents were, and to a certain extent seeing it with their own eyes. I suppose it's a bit like the first two Starmen in this respect. I may have some issues, haha.

The short explanation is yes, +15 is for "really, really good, but not a godlike specialist". DCs, by RAW, are generally listed in 5 point increments. I do use +5 and +10 for secondary and tertiary skills all the time. In 3E, the potential skill ceiling is lower, so I'd probably chop everyone I've posted down by 5 in a few places. Or perhaps not. Big numbers are fun, after all.

It's perhaps a subtle thing, really. Sir Randall could have made his daughter the Squire if he'd wanted to. But understandably, he was in no hurry to be the next Knight casualty. Or to make his child witness his violent death like he witnessed his father's. He didn't even know he had been found worthy until Glastonbury Tor in 2012, which ought to explain a lot about how the family was operating. So the Squire's armor choosing for him (as this had not happened before; each prior Knight had simply plopped it on their son) shook him. It's one thing to face your own mortality in combat. It's quite another to know (even if incorrectly) that you're doomed. So Daniel had to be ready by that time. And he still had to do hero stuff. And support Morgan. And tend to his children as best he could. All while hearing that ticking clock in his head, counting down until his end.

Morgan has the Reed Richards problem. Too much time spent in the lab, not enough spent with the family. Though to be fair, when she was with the family everything was either fine or could be sorted with a quick chat. Until it wasn't. She's also just a bit rubbish with people in exchange for being awe inspiring with science. Another old trope. To put it bluntly, both Randall and Morgan either didn't know there was a problem in the first place, or were simply too distracted to notice there was one. Randall by his impending demise and preparing for it, and Morgan by that and her eccentricities. A lot changed at Glastonbury Tor, but the two of them weren't on the list. Randall still hears that ticking clock. Morgan is still eccentric. So it goes.

Some writing done this time for the Vanguard. Ryan's got his other half named. Taranis has been replaced, as he no longer fit. Still need a name for Mr. Dullahan Scion. Named that Unique Dhampir. Otherwise this one's pretty uneventful.

...once again, like Asmodeus Psychovore, I think "Dullahan Scion" could make a great character name all on its own! Though probably not for the character you have in mind.

Keaira is an outstanding piece of writing on your part; honestly I can imagine reading a series of fantasy novels about the character, following her from her divine birth through her early, somewhat awkward and unknowing heroics to leading the armies of Avalon. While you have protested that you have no particular writing ambitions beyond creating a setting for your own enjoyment and ours, I really think Keaira would work well as a central character in a wide range of genres, should the desire to do straight narrative fiction every strike you.

Excellent work!

I think of it more as Batman merged his playboy Bruce Wayne and low class criminal Matches Malone personalities. Of course, this also means you'll probably enjoy Chasseur.

And thank you too. Straight narrative fiction is not something I have the attention span for. This character profiles and world building thing only works because my ADHD brain can jump from entry to entry while I'm writing. I know it kind of seems like I'm writing one after the other, but it's actually a lot more scattered. See how I literally had to stop and write something else right when I was almost finished with the Edgerunners. Plus every original plot I've ever come up with just kind of...ends up not working. I've tried simply free writing, but my mind races ahead to other scenes I want to do later. And if I plan out what I'm going to write, my mind becomes bored and I can't actually write because it knows how the story goes already and no longer cares about it. It's not an effort problem, either. My brain won't do the thing if it's not interested in doing the thing, and I'm on a good day only directing it's attention towards what I want to do. I can't even finish a short story before my brain gets bored and starts trying to wander away. Anything longer is absolutely not happening. To my endless despair. If I was neurotypical I'd probably be a novelist, and a damn good one. But I'm not. So it goes.

Please don't misunderstand. I genuinely appreciate your confidence in me, but I literally cannot. And because I'm poor in America, I can't afford to get my mental disadvantages sorted out or hire a ghostwriter. The latter of which would probably be cheaper, actually. :|

Eternal Phoenix, much like you, I tend to have difficulty refraining from pursuing tangents while writing-the act of committing pen to paper (or, more accurately, pixels to screen) causes me to reconsider best-laid plans for character and plot development, seeing possibilities which I didn't consider prior. This definitely posed a problem early on, as I kept revising or adding details, bogging down plots which had already been outlined and even scripted out. Now, I do not have ADHD, but I do understand and emphasize with the issues you described above. Please understand that I only wish to convey my appreciation of your genuine talent. I'm very glad you share your imagination and energy with us here at Echoes, and hope this brings you satisfaction as well.
