In Ultra Q specifically, the Garamon and Peguila episodes are pretty much the only cases. Its only much later on, when in the actual Ultraman sections of the world that we see the monsters get reused with any real consistency.

Ultra Q Ep. 18: "The Rainbow's Egg"

Post by OwOMotaros »

"The Rainbow's Egg"

Episode Count: 18/28
First Appearance(s): Pagos (First Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

Our episode begins as we follow a large truck absolutely plastered with danger signs. After pulling out of their highly-guarded facility (and nearly suffering a t-bone collision), we discover that this truck is transporting a large orb of enriched uranium, which is strung up ominously in the trailer section. After a long, overnight drive, the two drivers pull over in the countryside, overlooking the power plant they are heading to, in the center of a newly created "industrial city", where a huge amount of industry from around the country will be focused. After they re-enter their vehicle, the young of the two drivers reveals a small bamboo flower, the "Sazame Bamboo", that they had found nearby. The older of the two warns him that blooming bamboo is a "bad omen", and he tosses the flower away. The truck drives over the flower as they drive off, the sky darkening as they make their way toward the city. On the last stretch, the mountainside they are passing over begins to collapse, a huge rockslide accompanying the emergence of the raging kaiju, Pagos! The transport truck is blasted by a beam fired by Pagos, sending the uranium and the two men plummeting to an unknown fate.

We change scenes to a group of children, calling themselves "Team Dandelion", running off into a bamboo forest. In an effort to cheer up their grandmother, the group sets out to find her favorite flower: Bamboo Shoots. While searching, the leader of the group spots the same Sazame Bamboo, adding it to their gifts. The grandmother too is worried about the potential bad omen this presents but deflects by telling the children that the confluence of this flower and a "rainbow egg" will grant any wish one desires. The group then organizes again to set out to find this egg, hoping to use the wish to restore their grandmother's legs. Grandma then learns of the landslide and becomes even more worried about this bad omen.

We find ourselves above the city, with a helicopter holding our main trio of Yuriko, Jun, and Ippei, who've gone out to investigate the landslide. While Yuriko whines about her boss getting pissy about finding the truck, and Ippei speculates about the cause of the landslide, Jun discovers the two injured drivers. After the two are rescued and taken to a hospital, we discover that the younger of the two has seemingly been driven mad by the event, both laughing and screaming about the monster. The older of the two is much calmer and tells the group of what they know. Yuriko has Ippei talk to the younger (stupid and crazy communicate well), and he manages to get out information about a "golden rainbow". This catches Jun's attention, who links it to the uranium. Before the discussion can go any further, another earthquake occurs, followed by a darkening of the sky and the arrival of another "golden rainbow".

Back with the kids, this gets the attention of one of the smaller ones, who runs to tell the rest of the group, all in the local chicken coop looking for rainbow eggs. After a quick egg-laying gag (which somehow works), the group runs out to investigate.

Back at the helicopter, Jun pressed Yuriko on her knowledge of Pagos, but before she could continue embarrassing herself on her lack of knowledge, Ippei presses him to spill the beans. Apparently, Pagos is a kaiju with a history of attacking uranium stores, using a "Molecular Structure Destructive Beam" which appears to humans as a "golden rainbow". As the trio prepares to head to the plant to continue their investigation, the kids discover them, and Yuriko spots the Sazame Bamboo on the girl's hat. After they briefly bring up the whole "rainbow egg" thing, they run off. Jun brings up the same bad omen involving the Sazame Bamboo.

At the power plant, we find our main three meetings with several scientists and administrators, including the researcher who originally discovered Pagos during its first attack. After they confirm the monster's appearance, they prepare to utilize a special "Neo-Neutron Missile" to defeat the creature, as any other method will leave a vast area irradiated. At the same time, the kids reach the area the rainbow was emanating from and spread out to search for the egg. They are met with an earthquake and the emergence of Pagos from underneath them. The kids scatter, as Pagos makes its way (clumsily, might I add) towards the power plant. While running away, the lead girl and one of her cronies discover what they believe to be the rainbow egg (what we know to be the enriched uranium core). Despite the rampaging Kaiju not 25 meters away, the lead girl decided to make a break for the egg. While trying to get the core away, Pagos appears over the hill, locked onto the child. She rolls the egg into a ditch and dives in after it, successfully hiding from Pagos, as it passes overhead.

Making its way to the facility, Pagos begins a full-tilt Kaiju rampage, tearing down the newly-constructed manufacturing center with ease; stomping, slamming, and smashing its way through most of it, and firing off a few shots of its Molecular Structure Destructive Beam. Finally, the Neo-Neutron Missile arrives, just in time to "erode all of Pagos' tissue in one shot". The kids finally make it to the facility, warning them not to fire, as their leader is still out there with the rainbow egg. They quickly put the two together, with the main three set out to rescue the girl and the egg. With the clearance to attack, the Neo-Neutron Missile easily strikes down the beast, raining down energy onto the beast, and causing it to turn to dust. Everyone celebrates the victory as the sky turns bright once again.

The girl, still hard-pressed on using the "rainbow egg" is intercepted by the main trio, who try to tell her otherwise. This kid isn't one to back down and luckily doesn't have to, as the rest of the children arrive, pushing their grandmother with them. When she arrives, she stands up in delight and slowly walks to our main girl, and the two share a moment. More celebrations ensue, and the episode ends on a happy note, the kids and their grandmother walking off.

Notes: Cute. All I've gotta say. Normally I hate kids, but one with some guts is usually pretty good. And this kid stood down a KAIJU, soooo…

Complications

Motivation (Feeding) - Pagos seeks out high levels of radiation as a form of sustenance.

Background: Pagos, the Underground Monster. Created through unknown means, Pagos was first discovered when the creature attacked the city of Bejing, causing mass destruction in the search for radiation to feed on. The creature disappeared afterward, though not for long. When Japan's new industrial city, with the centerpiece nuclear plant, was nearing completion, Pagos set his sights on the area. Intercepting a transport truck carrying the facility's first supply of enriched uranium, Pagos' presence was first dismissed as a simple landslide, before continued earthquakes and a "golden rainbow", which accompanied the creature's Molecular Disintegration Beam brought the pieces together. Despite this, they weren't able to stop the beast from rampaging through the industrial city, leveling most of the complex before being struck down by the Neo-Neutron Missile; a weapon designed specifically to erode the creature's tissue. The weapon arrived just in time, leaving the calcified, dusty particles of the kaiju in the center of the destruction it wrought. Thus ended the first Pagos.

Notes: The original Pagos is plenty strong, but not as powerful as its later iterations would end up being. Hitting PL 12 offensively, and having a ranged option already puts it ahead of most of the other Kaiju in the roster so far, and they're also decently durable. They've also tossed on some underground specs, providing slow Burrowing, some Senses, etc. And that Radiation Sense, which is always neat. In short, strong monster. Not elite, but strong.

Ultra Q Ep. 19: "Challenge From The Year 2020"

"Challenge From The Year 2020"

Episode Count: 19/28
First Appearance(s): Kemur (First Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

Our episode begins at a JSDAF radar station, where Lt. Colonel Amano (played by Rider Legend Akiji Kobayashi) orders the launch of two fighters to investigate a UFO. Upon contact, the two fighters are destroyed in a bright flash. At a later meeting of military officers, Lt. Col. Amano is chastised by upper brass about the supposed UFO. Unable to convince anyone of the truth, Amano is left to investigate on his own.

After the opening credits, we return to Japan to see people going about their leisure activities; pool-goers taking a dive, the rich enjoying a drink at a villa, etc. Soon, their leisure is disrupted as people begin to vanish without a trace. One of these disappearances is captured by our very own Edogawa Yuriko; taking photos of said leisurely activities, she watches as a go-kart driver vanishes midway down the track, leaving her vehicle to roll to a stop, empty. Instantly tasting a case, she runs to call her Boss, who dismisses the idea in a rage. Yuriko goes for it anyhow.

At the Hoshikawa Airlines' airfield, we find Yuriko and Lt. Col. Amano, having come into contact after being dismissed by others, meeting with Jun and Ippei. While Jun is similarly skeptical of the vanishing claims, Ippei sees similarities between the events taking place in the real world, and those of a book he had recently been reading; "Challenge From The Year 2020", written by a seemingly-insane professor. Jun, somewhat convinced, takes Amano to search the crash site of the JSDAF planes, wanting to see evidence for himself. Yuriko sets off to continue her investigation, leaving Ippei to ponder the coincidences.

Jun and Amano take a plane over the crash site, finding it a simple, calm, empty ocean. Amano takes this as proof of his delusions, but as Jun goes to turn the plane back, he too vanishes!

Yuriko rushes into the Daily News dark room, searching for the reporter who had accompanied her during the sighting of the go-kart disappearance. Finding the room empty, she nearly comes into contact with a strange, moving goo, unnoticed on the side of the marbling. She is saved from its effects as another reporter barges in; on contact, he vanishes.

Inside a screening room at the Daily News, we find Yuriko and Lt. Col. Amano, this time with the Daily News Boss, inspecting her photos of the disappearance of the go-kart woman. Amano backs up Yuriko's story involving the mystery goo, having found traces of it in Jun's plane, and they manage to convince the Boss of the situation. Despite the lack of witnesses, the Boss agrees to utilize his resources to assist, even calling in police protection for Yuriko in the form of a bumbling old detective named Udagawa.

Later that day, at a fountain park, we find Yuriko in a phone booth, venting to Ippei about the detective. When he overhears her, she changes subject to searching for leads, causing Ippei to once again bring up the book. He's certain that the events taking place are just like the book; the sudden vanishings, the UFO, etc. While Ippei relays to her the story's supposed origins as a telepathic record to the professor by an alien named "Kemur", as well as the knowledge of the "Erasing Energy Source Liquid" which should be causing the disappearances, the same mystery goo seeps its way into the phone booth, nearly causing her own disappearance! The detective managed to pull her out just in time, lighting the goo on fire before it could cause any further harm. Udagawa pulls out a small device, which immediately picks up a mystery signal. This leads him to the nearby hiding spot of Kemur! The alien dashes off, with its long strides allowing it to outrun the pursuing police vehicles.

Udagawa, returning to Yuriko, reveals his former friendship with the crazy professor; how he had been the one to send the old coot off to the mental hospital after his apparent delusions seeped into his work. Now that these have been confirmed, Udagawa is ready to confront them. Yuriko questions him on the status of those who disappeared, with Udagawa believing that they have been transported to "Planet Kemur", which sits in the distant year 2020. This information causes Yuriko to faint.

We follow a car, with Lt. Col. Amano and Ippei heading to the professor's old laboratory. Amano asks Ippei for whatever knowledge he has on Kemur, and according to him, the Kemur are extremely technologically advanced, with extremely long lives as a result. Despite this advancement, they were unable to find a way to stop their aging process and instead turned to taking the youth of humans as a way to prolong this.

Back at the fountain, Yuriko finally comes to. Udagawa prepares to get her an escort home, but in the brief moment of vulnerability, Yuriko vanishes! Meanwhile, Amano and Ippei arrive at the lab, finding the professor's somewhat incomplete notes, as well as a small metallic device. This device, the "K-miniod", draws Ippei's immediate delight. According to the book, with the X-Channel Wave Light it produces, they should be able to defeat the alien! The two set off to Tokyo Tower in hopes that the transmission station there will allow them to activate it.

We move to Yuriko, awakening in a dark, silent place. The area suddenly lights up, revealing her to be in the center of a carnival! In the distance, she spots Jun, standing atop one of the rides. The two make their way to each other, but Yuriko is intercepted by the arrival of the police. Jun begins to change, his face morphing into that of Kemur, who then chases the fleeing Yuriko! The police open fire on Kemur, leading to the creature's attempted retreat up the Ferris Wheel. Udagawa lands a luck shot to its head, causing it to fall to the ground, before morphing and growing to massive size! The alien rises to its feet, now unaffected by the police weapons, and grabs hold of the wheel, tearing it out and slamming it into the rest of the complex.

As Kemur prepares to turn its ire on the retreating police, we find Ippei and Amano at Tokyo Tower, having successfully gotten the K-miniod to activate! From the tip of the two, a powerful light wave shoots into the alien's head protrusion, causing immense pain and sending it slamming into the wreckage of the carnival. As a last-ditch effort, it releases its mystery goo onto itself, disappearing into the unknown. Immediately afterward, a cloud descends from above, releasing all the captured civilians into the carnival's remaining teacup ride. Yuriko again rushes over to Jun, and the two share a moment before her continued fear of Kemur gets the best of her and she runs off yet again. Udagawa chuckles at the young whippersnappers and prepares to leave. However, a remaining puddle of the creature's goo sits in the area, and in a case of morbid curiosity, he taps his foot into it, disappearing into nothingness as the episode ends.

Notes: Ah, much better writing this time. Pretty good episode, and a really interesting alien villain. Good first appearance of our boy Akiji Kobayashi in the Ultra Series, but not his last. Also, jeez this show is old. The distant year of 2020 and all.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Complications

Personality - Kemur is a quirky villain.

Motivation (Assimilation) - Kemur, despite their technologically advanced society and biology, have been unable to stop their molecular degeneration process entirely. To counteract this, they capture humans, assimilating them to extend their lives.

Power Loss (Assimilation) - When Kemur is defeated, they involuntarily release their assimilated victims, leaving them unharmed. Said victims can also potentially override their captor's mind if their form is used as a disguise (Will vs. Will).

Power Loss (Erasing Energy Source Liquid) - The Erasing Energy Source Liquid is extremely flammable and can be easily nullified by such effects.

Weakness (X-Channel Light Waves) - Kemur can be easily dispatched by X-Channel Light Waves, a specific energy field that almost instantly incapacitates them.

Background: Kemur I, the future assimilator. Coming from the distant year of 2020, the Kemur Aliens had solved most of their issues, and through their incredible technology, evolved into powerful beings. Despite all their advancements, the one thing they could never solve was their innate degenerative status. To fend off this process, these highly-advanced aliens set their sights on Earth, in the year of 1966. Utilizing their Erasing Energy Source Liquid, the first Kemur captured dozens of humans, using their energies to fuel its further existence. The string of disappearances this caused caught the attention of the intrepid reporter Edogawa Yuriko and her allies, but even with their track record in stopping threats to Earth, they fell victim to the creature's effects. With the help of the research of the seemingly-delusional Professor Kanda and his K-miniod device, Kemur was defeated, and forced to retreat back to the future, its true fate unknown.

Notes: The first Kemur, despite the limitations of the production at the time, is VERY powerful. Even ignoring the species' advanced physiology & low-grade super speed, they come with an extremely potent chemical weapon; the Erasing Energy Source Liquid, able to fuse targets into its being, allowing them to utilize their energies as sustenance and assume their appearances as a disguise, as well as allow them to teleport themselves or others to far locations, as well as back in time. All of this is ignoring them being the first Seijin of the series to have the ability to GROW to Kaiju sizes, granting them access to the same field of battle as the majority of the cast, albeit as a relative lightweight. Overall, this degree of capability brings them to be the first of the Ultra Q roster to reach 300 PP+, a very solid combatant, though not MASSIVELY powerful.

I'm astonished at how diverse some of these creatures are, even if some of them are clearly based on a single template.

Yeah, the show's designers definitely knew they couldn't just to "Kaiju A Attacks City; Is Driven Back" every time, so there's a lot of effort in shaking it up. Some are dumb, some are smart, some have different abilities, etc.

Tsubaraya's been masters of the Kaiju game from the start. Even their most basic monsters are fairly unique. And when they're on top of their game, absolute elite-tier Kaiju able to give Toho more than a run for their money.

Do we ever see Det. Udagawa again? That's a pretty wild story. Clever how they set up the means to take out the monster early on so it's not a complete ass-pull.

"The Primordial Amphibian Ragon"

Episode Count: 20/28
First Appearance(s): Ragon (First Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

Our episode begins with a huge explosion off the Japanese coast. The Daily News quickly catches wind of the event, finding out that an underwater volcano has erupted. They dispatch our girl Yuriko to investigate, who isn't super eager to cover a "mediocre" story. She's sent to visit Professor Ishii, a geologist who was ousted from the academic society for his outlandish "Japan Sinking Theory".

She catches a flight with Jun and Ippei, heading right past the eruption and arriving on Iwane Island, the professor's home. Ippei drops the two off, and they head to meet the professor. They arrive to find the professor, alongside his sister Fumiko, arguing with some island figurehead about sending out an investigation ship towards the volcano. He quickly turns them down, despite the pleas of the two.

The two groups converge, with Yuriko believing time will tell that they're right. As they discuss, they reach the island's port, where a local fisherman calls the professor over to report what he saw at the volcano site; dead fish, with missing heads and destroyed insides, as well as an odd, gel-covered egg. The professor successfully convinces him to allow them to study it, but as they disembark, something attacks the ship, dragging one of the fishermen out to sea. While the rest of the fishermen successfully rescue him, he screams in fear of a monster dragging him away.

At the professor's home, we find Jun and Yuriko waiting on the professor, who has spent the last several hours studying the egg. Fed up with waiting, and egged on by Jun's jokes, she decides to force the issue. The professor then reveals what he believes; this is the egg of a "Ragon", a species of "Undersea Primitive Humans"; who controlled the planet hundreds of millions of years ago. As they discuss this, a Ragon makes its way onto the island, attacking a local drunk on his stumble home, snapping his neck. The creature continues making its way through the island village, tearing apart infrastructure and even bringing down a building as it made its way towards its' egg.

Back at the professor's home, our group returns to find the egg gone. At first speculating the fisherman stole it back, the professor shrugs it off. He knows what he wants to know. That egg had to have gotten pushed from the 5,000-meter depths that Ragon live at up to the range of fisher's nets somehow, leading him to believe that the tectonic activity he had warned about was finally coming to pass. The island is in danger of sinking. Jun and Yuriko run off to go send out warnings and investigate further, only to come across Ragon themselves! They hide off the trail, just avoiding the creature's gaze, before it continues shuffling along toward the professor's home.

Back at their home, Fumiko argues with her brother, believing that he's a coward for not trying to warn the village yet again. Heading to blow off steam with chores, she encounters Ragon waiting just outside! The beast charges in, and the two try to escape. Jun and Yuriko arrive to assist, finding the creature mesmerized by Fumiko's radio. The creature slips away after the music stops, escaping just as the police arrive. The creature spends the rest of the night lurking in the area, leaving the group trapped inside.

The next morning, the island is rocked by an earthquake, signaling the soon-to-occur sinking. The group is forced into action, leaving the house only to be attacked by Ragon! Unwavered by their firearms, and easily tossing people around, Jun thinks quickly and activates the radio once again. Ragon is entranced and begins to follow him, slipping in and out of a rage state whenever the music stops. Jun leads the creature away from the village and towards a cliffside. Despite his precarious position, Jun continues leading the beast as far away from everyone as he can, before trying to trick the beast into the water. This fails, but he is nevertheless saved at the last moment by another earthquake, which sends the creature falling into the sea. The rest of the group runs to warn the village, as Jun and Yuriko attempt to catch up through the aftershocks and landslides.

The group warns the rest of the village, and they make their way to the port to escape, only to be intercepted by Ragon yet again! In the rush to escape, the fisherman drops his container, revealing the creature's egg, now hatching a baby Ragon. Fumiko concludes that Ragon is simply trying to recover its' child, and offers to make the handoff herself. This goes off without a hitch, and Ragon returns to the sea with its' child. Now free of the creature, the villagers rush onto the boats as the island's collapse speeds up.

Jun and Yuriko, still far behind, seem doomed. The professor's boat turns around to help, only to be beaten to the punch by Ippei, arriving by helicopter at the last moment and saving them from the island's destruction! The episode ends with our characters watching on as it collapses, unsure of their futures.

Notes: This was a good episode, though I'm not entirely sure I can call it compelling. The best part is probably Ragon; finally getting a human-sized threat with significant power is neat, since our protagonists have NO answer to something that powerful, and it adds the first reoccurring species of the Ultra Series, which is neat.

Complications

Personality - The original Ragon was an angry beast, searching for their egg.

Weakness (Music) - Ragon seems easily entranced by music, but any disruption to this music will drive them into further rage.

Background: Ragon, the Undersea Humanoid. A member of an ancient species of reptilian humanoids, who were once the ruling species hundreds of millions of years ago, the modern Ragon spend their lives thousands of meters below sea level, living passive lives despite their dangerous physicalities. The peaceful life this particular Ragon was living would be interrupted by the eruption of an undersea volcano and the displacement of their egg. When the egg fell into the hands of Professor Ishii on the fishing village of Iwane Island, the adult Ragon set off to recover their egg. Ragon, a slow mover on land, led a brief campaign of terror on the island; traumatizing and killing fishermen, terrorizing civilians, and using their great strength to tear apart infrastructure. The creature would eventually track down the location of their egg, lurking outside the professor's home and waiting for their exit. Following a powerful earthquake, signaling the incoming destruction of the island, Ragon would attack the escaping group; easily defeating the paltry police force and their firearms, only to be distracted by Manjome Jun, exploiting the creature's love of music to lead it away. Cornering the man, Ragon nearly killed him, before being knocked off the perilous cliffside by yet another earthquake. Ragon wouldn't be gone for long, quickly swimming around to the village's port, and preventing the islanders' escape from their sinking island. The professor's sister, having discovered the now-hatching egg, handed it off, allowing the sea beast to make its way back to the ocean, and allowing the islanders to escape. Thus ended the story of the original Ragon.

Notes: Ragon are a fairly powerful species. Despite their human size, they have a great deal of physical strength and durability, resulting from their highly-pressurized lifestyle. While the wiki talks them up as "as powerful as an elephant", I've brought them down to a mid-grade superhuman level, which seems much more fitting (they did manage to tear down a building, though). And while they're very durable (enough to practically ignore a close-range shotgun blast), I neglected to give them Impervious. This build roughly reflects what most human-sized Ragons' stats are, though some of the more recent ones have shown greater intellect, but we'll cross those roads when we get there.

Well that's a bit blatantly knocked off of the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Yeah this one shows the inspiration more blatantly than anything so far. But it’s unique in that it’s a whole species, and stands out as a unique foe given the usual stuff they deal with, which doesn’t seem to have a giant weakness that can be exploited.
