The only difference is that these ones are canonically cyborgs (as in we see the bits and everything), thus necessitating a few extra ranks in powers to reflect their capabilities. They also tended to switch up weapons a LOT. Your classic short swords and guns, to spears, nunchucks, etc. Even a few commander-specific weapons, like the conductive whips given to the Commandos under Shibirayjin, the stingray kaijin, who used their power to revive defeated Commandos through that conductivity, reactivating their systems.
This is very clever. I like it.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Complications

Personality - The Great Leader is a malicious, bloodthirsty, megalomaniacal, otherworldly villain.

Weakness - The Great Leader's draconic form has a weak spot in its foot, which, when hit, left it quite vulnerable.

Background: Once again, the Great Leader has survived and re-emerged with a new organization, ready to genocide the world. As they tend to do, the Great Leader stayed hidden for a majority of the season, ordering his generals to undertake efforts to kill humans and defeat "that damn Kamen Rider!" As both General Monster and Admiral Majin showed constant failure in achieving these goals, the Great Leader finally decided that it was time to do the job himself; threatening Majin with one last chance to defeat Skyrider (nearly crushing him with his giant scaled hand), the Great Leader would prepare his scheme: readying an 'Anti-Oxygen Bomb', a weapon designed to wipe out all life on Earth. As the bomb neared completion, he would encounter Rider 2 and Stronger, who had infiltrated his base. Unaffected by their attacks, the Great Leader chased them out. With the bomb launching, the rest of the Seven Legendary Riders would arrive in Japan, joining Skyrider, ready to fight to the end against their greatest foe. After a long combat, with the Riders being flung around the quarry (cause it's always the quarry), slammed by giant limbs and blasted by powerful fire, they would land an Octuple-Way Rider Kick to the face, knocking the giant beast on its ass. Fed up with once again being defeated by the Kamen Riders, the Great Leader took off to his bomb, preparing to set it off. Even this would fail, as the 8 Riders combined their energies, using Skyrider's Sailing Jump to grab both the Great Leader and his Anti-Oxygen Bomb and flying them into space, which seemed to kill all involved in the process. Thus ended the Great Leader, again...

Notes: Finally, a Great Leader form I get to BUILD! In this form, the Great Leader becomes a physical powerhouse, able to fight off 8 Riders at once with powerful Area Effects. The only reason the Riders didn't suffer seriously in this battle is their own solid Toughness and Evasion, being much faster than him. Even with them surviving the battle, they couldn't affect him until Skyrider, wielding the crossbow that had killed his mother, hit a weak point under the Great Leader's foot, leaving him open enough for an 8-Way Rider Kick to knock him down and nearly out. I know the Great Leader could get boring, coming back so often, but it's stuff like this that makes me enjoy that overarching structure. Seeing 8 Karate Bugmen fight a Genocidal Cosmic Dragon Despot who plans to Godzilla '54 the entire planet. Peak. Fiction.

haha, excellent- Kaiju Villain, size enough to back up his threat, and he actually FIGHTS, not just orders guys around and then dies. And it takes all the heroes to suicide attack (in that Sailor Moon way where instant resurrection is guaranteed) him to stop him.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Complications

Personality - While very goofy and comedic, GanGan-G very much aspires to be a hero and help others.

Background: Kanji Yada, Japan's Greatest Hero. First appearing about halfway through Skyrider's crusade against Neo-Shocker, GanGan-G was a wannabe hero wandering the Japanese Countryside, searching for people to help. Being caught up in the battle between Skyrider, V3, Mantle Kong, and Takogang, GanGan-G would show his somewhat cowardly nature but would power through it to attempt to battle the powerful Mantle Kong. Though he put up a surprisingly good fight, he failed to actually beat the monster, and actually, (accidentally) bought the Riders enough time to stop their schemes. After this, GanGan-G would stick around, stumbling his way into nearly every Neo-Shocker scheme for the next 20+ episodes, becoming friends with the rest of the cast, especially Hiroshi (all the time being unable to put together that Hiroshi was, in fact, Skyrider). He came to appreciate the bravery and heroics of the Kamen Riders, even chasing the 8 Riders while they set off towards the final battle with the Great Leader, wanting to join the battle. Hiroshi would tell him to take care of their friends, before riding off after the rest, causing Kanji to finally put it together, mourning with the rest of his friends at the supposed death of the Kamen Riders, swearing to protect Japan in their place.

Notes: GanGan-G, while mostly serving as comic relief, is quite powerful for a normal human. In his first in-series fight, he successfully (for, like, a minute) holds off Mantle Kong, a physical powerhouse of a Neo-Shocker Kaijin, who managed to defeat Kamen Rider V3 later that episode. He is also consistently able to defeat Ari Commandos (when they don't get the jump on him). He's mostly useful as a defense for the rest of Team Skyrider, while the actual Rider deals with the big threat of the week.

Skyrider's Allies

Post by OwOMotaros »

And lastly, to finish off the Skyrider builds, we have his surprisingly long allies list...

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Professor Shido - An scientist (and former hang glider) who was sought after by Neo-Shocker, who inadvertently caused the deaths of Hiroshi's friends after he was rescued. After Hiroshi was heavily injured in a second rescue attempt, the professor performed a Reconstruction Surgery on the young man, transforming him into Skyrider. Capable disguise user. Leaves the series after episode 13, sending the group too...

Genjiro Tani - The owner of Café Blanka and an old friend of the Professor and Tsukuba, who takes on the mentorship role after the Professor's leaving. With his family killed by Neo-Shocker, he devotes himself to taking down the organization alongside Skyrider. A competent engineer, sometimes providing Skyrider with mission-specific equipment.

Tonda Kondo - A freelance photojournalist who spends his time in the series looking for scoops, only to faint before he can witness battles between Skyrider and Neo-Shocker. Suddenly disappeared after the defeat of General Monster.

Numa - The head worker at Café Blanka. Usually comic relief.

Michi - One of the random women in the Hang Glider Club. Described by Hiroshi as a tomboy.

Midori - One of the other random women in the Hang Glider Club and Shigeru's older sister. Heavily injured during Skyrider's final battle with General Monster.

Yumi - Another member of the Hang Glider Club. Heavily injured during Skyrider's final battle with General Monster.

Naoko & Aki - Two new hires at the café, one a martial artist, one an especially-clumsy baton twirler. The girls would both be caught up in multiple schemes, such as Aki being replaced by a mirror duplicate, or Naoko being kidnapped by a mummy Kaijin who mistook her for their long-lost princess.

Shigeru - The youngest member of the Hang Glider Club and Midori's little brother. Heavily injured during Skyrider's final battle with General Monster. Also often caught up in Neo-Shocker schemes by happening to know a kid who was involved.

Professor Tsukuba - Hiroshi's father, who, after refusing to join Neo-Shocker, was fatally wounded in a bombing and transformed into "Cyborg FX777". Eventually was promoted to head of the Ari Commando Training Center, and later, head of Neo-Shocker Kanto. Except all of that was a lie. In truth, he was simply killed and put in permanent ice, to serve as an example.

Ms. Tsukuba - Hiroshi's mother, who survived Neo-Shocker's assassination attempts for several years, regularly visiting her husband's grave. Eventually captured by the Great Leader, she was put to work under Neo-Shocker for a short time. She would get to meet her son one last time in the late hours of the Neo-Shocker invasion, informing him of the Great Leader's weak point before being struck down by a Skull Assassin's crossbow bolt.

Kamen Rider Catchup Complete!

Post by OwOMotaros »

And that's that, folks! After........what, a little over a year(?), I've finally finished our extensive catchup of early Showa Kamen Rider. Certainly a journey (and a massive brain-drain), but, it was totally worth it.

Ultra Q

Post by OwOMotaros »

To truly begin our Ultra Series builds, we must first cover the franchise's unorthodox first entry…

Image

"For the next 30 minutes, you'll experience a parting of mind from body, and become swallowed into this mysterious time."

Ultra Q
Series Entry: 1st
Genre(s): Sci-Fi/Thriller/Tokusatsu
Creator(s): Eiji Tsubaraya/Tsubaraya Productions, TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting Service)
Release: January 2nd - July 3rd, 1966 (Finale Delayed to December 14th)

History

In 1963, hot off several highly-successful films under Toho, Eiji Tsubaraya, the special-effects genius who brought Godzilla and his fellow monsters to life over the previous near-decade, opened his own production company, Tsubaraya Special Effects Productions (later simply called Tsubaraya Productions). While still working on various Toho Kaiju features, Mr. Tsubaraya began undertaking his own projects, the first of which resulted in Ultra Q.

The basic premise was to create 30-minute Kaiju films, with all the mystery, action, and destruction intact. It's less comparable to the Godzilla & Gamera franchises than it is to early sci-fi thrillers like The Twilight Zone & The Outer Limits. With Mr. Tsubaraya's pull in Toho, they were able to access additional suits and props, resulting in many Toho Kaiju suits being altered to create new monsters.

The show wasn't a massive hit, but it did well enough for itself and has a cult fanbase that has led to several sequel series, independent of the rest of the Ultra Series, being produced. Besides that, the main contribution the series has had was its' monster catalog. While most of them are one-offs or were later updated further to create other Ultra Kaiju, several, such as Gomess, Peguila, and Ragon, have gone on to appear in later seasons.

Ultra Q Ep. 1: "Defeat Gomess!"

Post by OwOMotaros »

Now, to start our coverage of Ultra Q, I wanna start discussing individual episodes, both to improve my media literacy & get more discussion flowing (and hopefully get more of you to WATCH this stuff). First up, the landmark first episode of the entire Ultra Series...

Image

"Defeat Gomess!"

Episode Count: 1/28
First Appearances: Gomess (Q), Litra (Q), Manjome Jun (First Appearance), Edogawa Yuriko (First Appearance), Togawa Ippei (First Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

While working on a highway tunnel construction operation, construction crew members dig up a strange object from a vast, seemingly natural tunnel system. Once this info spreads, Daily News journalist Yuriko Edogawa, alongside her pilot friends Jun Manjome and Ippei Edogawa make their way to the site to investigate. While Yuriko and Jun investigate the tunnel itself, Ippei, alongside another reporter and a young local paleontology nerd discovers the origins of the object; the egg of a mythical bird named Litra. If legend proved true, the discovery of Litra's egg would mean that its ancient nemesis, the Ancient Monster: Gomess, had awoken. Back in the tunnel, Yuriko and Jun would be trapped with the awoken Gomess, whose tunneling had caved their escape in. While they ran for their lives from the beast, Ippei and the nerd worked to hatch Litra, who hatched just before Gomess broke free. The two creatures engaged in a fierce battle; Litra utilized their sharp weapons and high speed, and Gomess used pure power and durability. Heavily injured, Litra would use their final attack; the Citronella Acid, which quickly overwhelms and defeats Gomess. Litra, overexerted, would fall shortly afterward, leaving a pile of dead monsters on the floor.

Notes: "Defeat Gomess!" is an.......alright first episode. While we are just dropped into the world, our main three protagonists are set up well; Yuriko's a headstrong reporter who has a tendency to get in over her head, Jun is a stoic, brave man, but still a regular guy, not an action hero, and Ippei is the group's heart; kind, if a little dense. We get the obligatory child character of the week in Liro, the paleontology nerd and nephew of the construction crew chief, whose belief in Litra proves vital to saving the day. The monsters are pretty cool, too. While scraped together from a Godzilla suit and Rodan flying prop, Gomess and Litra still feel like their own beasts, and both would come back in some way in later seasons.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Complications

Personality - Awoken from hibernation by human interference, Gomess is dead-set on rampaging through the countryside.

Rivalry (Litra) - Gomess' constant rival is the mythic bird, Litra.

Weakness - Gomess seems especially vulnerable to Litra's Citronella Acid technique.

Background: Ancient Monster: Gomess, the landmark first Ultra Kaiju. A long-dormant creature, Gomess was awoken from underground by human mining operations. His subsequent rampage through their construction site would be interrupted by the hatching of the final egg of his old rival, Litra. Through a combination of intense melee scuffling and Litra's powerful Citronella Acid, the terror of Gomess was quickly averted, and the two creatures died together in a pile.

Notes: Original recipe Gomess here, while lacking the full-tilt size and Strength of a Kaiju, is still quite the powerful beast. Anything derived from a Godzilla suit would have to be, right? Through some solid Strength and Durability, and a relatively small size compared to most Ultra Kaiju, Gomess (Q) manages to hit PL 10 both offensively and defensively. He's got a pretty basic package, however; Impervious, some attack mods through his Natural Weapons, and Burrowing to fit his underground nature. Guess Tsubaraya didn't get to take the atomic breath with him.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Complications

Personality - Litra is instinctually devoted to fighting off the Ancient Monster, Gomess.

Rivalry (Gomess) - The two monster species are naturally driven to opposition.

Weakness - Litra's Citronella Acid is mostly a last-ditch technique, as overuse can lead to its' death.

Background: Ancient Bird: Litra, the first heroic Ultra Kaiju. The last remaining member of the 'Litolaria' species, Litra was uncovered as a stone egg by members of a construction crew during a tunneling operation. Unable to determine what the object was, the crew reported the event to the public, drawing the attention of Yuriko Edogawa and her friends, as well as Liro, nephew of the crew chief. Hatched by the efforts of Liro & Ippei, Litra engaged in its vicious battle with Gomess, its' species' ancient rival. Though quite outmuscled, Litra kept up through tenacity and speed. Eventually, heavily wounded, Litra would resort to its' last resort weapon; the Citronella Acid, which put Gomess down. Litra would soon follow, having overexerted during the battle, buried in a small grave by Liro.

Notes: Litra is a much more balanced monster than Gomess. While far weaker physically, Litra's still packing Class 12 Strength, a much higher Movement speed, and a potent Acid effect with the Citronella Acid (which was more like an energy beam, but whatever). Litra's relative frailty compared to Gomess made it a losing battle from the start. Without the Acid, Litra would have been pretty well dealt with.

Re: Taros' Tokusatsu Builds (Ultra Q! Gomess! Litra!)

Post by Jabroniville »

Nice stuff! I'd neglected to check this out around Christmas (I must have clicked on it by mistake and not read through), but these shows are pretty fascinating. I'd never heard of Ultra Q but I like the idea of them going the cheapy route of redecorating old Godzilla & Rodan costumes- I'm guessing those suits were damaged enough during filming that they didn't re-use them much during the sequel Godzilla movies?

No, actually. Pretty much every suit they used was maintained well enough that they were reused in later Godzilla productions. The MosuGoji suit specifically would be used later for water scenes in Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, and the body would be attached to an even later, also modified Godzilla suit to portray Jirahs in Ultraman.

I bought a heavily discounted steelcase set of this a few months ago on a whim at a Best Buy. I hadn't thought to look at it until I saw Shin Ultraman with my sister this week. I'm looking forward to reading these builds again after I actually know something from the show!

Ultra Q Ep. 2: "Goro & Goroh"

Post by OwOMotaros »

Image

"Goro & Goroh"

Episode Count: 2/28
First Appearance: Goro (Only Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

A tourist group on the Awashima Kaijo Ropeway, while learning about the island's monkey population, is stunned to encounter a massive monkey, swinging on the ropeway towards them, causing them to flee in terror. Deep in the nearby Amagi Mountains, we find a "Wild Monkey Research Lab", where several researchers and a local mute wildman named Goroh work on experiments involving a native monkey population. Discovering their chemical stash ransacked, the researchers interrogate Goroh before realizing "Uh-oh, one of the monkeys got in". Specifically, Goroh's personal favorite monkey (also named Goro), had gotten into their container of Aoba Walnuts, which had been altered with Helipron G, an experimental hormone accelerator developed during WWII, resulting in Goro growing into a 50-meter beast.

Meanwhile, at Hoshikawa Airlines, while Jun & Ippei were looking over pictures Yuriko had sent them from a trip to Elyan Island (some vaguely defined African island), they were hired by the Daily News editor-in-chief to transport him out to investigate the appearance of the giant monkey. Arriving on the scene, the group is stunned to see Goro, fresh off stealing a milk delivery, holding his keeper. This scares the group off, who run into the researchers, giving them the full rundown of the situation. Time passes, the Daily News publishes the story (to great acclaim), and Yuriko returns from her trip. Immediately being put back to work, Yuriko reveals her own encounter with a giant monkey and drags her friends out to further investigate the incident. Rescuing Goroh from local farmers, the group learns that he had been stealing from their produce to feed his giant friend before he is arrested. Goro, missing his friend, eventually wanders into town to find him, being angered into destruction by the police response. The Editor-in-Chief, getting Goroh released from jail, helps the group convince the police to help them sedate him and move him out to Elyan Island. Using a milk jug filled with sedatives, Goroh calms Goro, leaving Goroh heavily confused, believing his friend dead.

Notes: "Goro & Goroh" is a sorta…meh episode. The best part is probably the portrayal of Goro itself (using the King Kong suit from King Kong vs Godzilla, with the addition of a tail). This is the first of several episodes where our protagonists don't actually…do much. Jun & Ippei mostly just react and pilot, and Yuriko only shows up halfway through! The Daily News Boss getting to investigate is fun, sucks that he has very limited future appearances. And Goro itself is only a one-shot monster, with no real legacy to speak of.

Complications

Personality - Goro is a curious, playful monkey, whose condition is simply the result of poor circumstances.

Relationship (Goroh, the Monkey Boy) - Goro's only friend is his handler, Goroh, a mute zookeeper who works to keep him from causing accidental destruction. When he was arrested, Goro began an accidental rampage through the local town, searching for his friend, and being enraged by humanity's attempts to attack him.

Background: Goro, Toho's personal roided-up monkey. Originally a native monkey of the Amagi Mountains, Goro became the subject of a series of scientific tests, alongside several other monkeys, overseen by a group of researchers and their caretaker, the mute "Monkey Boy", Goroh. One night, Goro managed to sneak into the research facility's stash of chemicals and found a container of Aoba Walnuts, laced with the hormone-boosting chemical Helipron G. Overdosing on these nuts, Goro grew to massive size and began exploring. After being spotted terrorizing tourists and hijacking milk trucks, Goro's story would be released to the public, drawing international attention. He would be none the wiser until his friend was arrested, caught stealing food for him. Not knowing where he had gone, Goro would wander into town, causing a police response that would rouse him into a rampage, before being sedated with drugged milk and transported to the distant Elyan Island, where he would be able to live with others of his kind.

Notes: Goro isn't a massive terror, but he's still far stronger than most other Kaiju in this show. At a full 50 meters and 10,000 tons, he's got enough strength to casually tear down the small town he wandered into. But, without the experience or combat chops of many later on Kaiju, he's only hitting PL 10.
