Interesting stuff, arguably a precursor to All Monsters Attack/Godzilla's Revenge.

Man, this one sure comes out of left field for what has so far been a pretty grounded-ish sci-fi universe. By far the most out there episode concept so far, especially with how trippy and confusing it seems as a concept, LOL.

Hmm… It was made in 1966. I’m guessing that some recreational pharmaceuticals might have been floating around the writers room.

Ultra Q Ep. 7: "S.O.S Mount Fuji"

Post by OwOMotaros »

Image

"S.O.S Mount Fuji"

Episode Count: 7/28
First Appearance(s): Gorgos (Only Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

We begin our episode with Yuriko and Ippei on a cliff overlooking Mt. Fuji. Yuriko's been assigned to investigate the possible near-future eruption of Mt. Fuji, and has dragged Ippei along, who protests to the idea that the stalwart mountain would ever erupt! The two head to visit a volcanic observation lab headed by a Mr. Hayakawa.

We move to the lab, where Yuriko is already discussing with Hayakawa, who drops a load of scientific mumbo-jumbo, correlating various recent nearby eruptions and tremors which lead him to believe the eruption is imminent. Meanwhile, outside, Ippei is scared awake by a loud bang; at first, he believes Fuji had blown while he was dozing off, only to find a group of local children testing a prop rocket ship they had constructed. The group is told off by the scientist before the local police officer comes around and scares them off. The officer apologizes to them, saying the kids' attitude is likely his fault; the kids (and the village in general) haven't taken him seriously since he brought news of the eruption. The scientist takes the opportunity to continue elaborating, bringing up the now hot spring-like temperatures of a formerly cold pond, to which the officer brings up some village lore. Apparently, the heat increase had happened before, about 80 years ago. At least, that's what a local farmer says. The scientist then asks if the local wildman, Takeru, had been informed, but the officer hasn't been able to keep up with him long enough to tell him. Yuriko and Ippei decide to take up the case of the local wildman.

Scene change, Yuriko is meeting with the supposed older sister of the wildman, who expositions on their history and the tragedy that befell her brother; lost to the forest over 15 years ago. Meanwhile, Ippei, the officer, and the schoolchildren explored the forest and discussed the wildman; coming across a hunting party and a bear they had shot, he lashed out and took down all 5 men barehanded, before WALKING OFF WITH THE BEAR OVER HIS SHOULDER. The group then stumble across Takeru, rushing through the forest, with the officer chasing after him, still trying to warn him of the impending catastrophe. The chase moves from the forest to a nearby waterfall, which Takeru easily passes through, leaving the officer in the dust. The officer, still searching, watches as the heated pond geysers out and expels a massive rock.

Scene change, it’s the next day. News reports of this rock and the activation of Mt. Fuji have made their way out, with Yuriko and Jun setting out in a helicopter to gather more information. Ippei, in the meantime, stayed in the village overnight to keep watch on the mountain. Jun shares a bit of Ippei's former skepticism, before spotting the rock and coming into land. We come to see several construction workers attempting to destroy the rock, which landed directly onto a roadway. One of the workers, being messed with by the village kids, accidentally blows the rock prematurely and nearly kills his compatriot. The crew moves the remains out to a field, where Takeru comes across them, suspicious of what they are.

Later that night, Takeru awakens from his cave hut and rushes back to the field, having been awoken by the sound of the rocks coming back together around a glowing core! Slowly approaching from the forest, Takeru gets a direct view of the Rock Monster: Gorgos! Gorgos manages to spot the wildman and begins chasing him down, tearing through the forest and unleashing blasts of steam from its mouth. Takeru, in a feat of absolute genius, throws his pocket knife in its eye, angering the beast further before getting his leg trapped under falling forest rubble.

Scene change, it appears the group has convinced Takeru's sister to attempt to bring him back to civilization, as they, accompanied by the police officer, set out to search. While the officer manages to find the trapped Takeru, the main three and the sister end up encountering Gorgos, continuing its rampage! Gorgos heads straight for them, with Takeru just escaping before Gorgos barrels through their location. The two run off, hiding in a small cave that Gorgos' rampage traps them in. Takeru, the crazy bastard, manages to SHOVE THE BOULDER OUT OF THE WAY through brute force before the officer explains the volcano situation. Takeru disregards it as he heads to deal with Gorgos, with the two groups converging. Stealing the officer's gun, Takeru bum-rushes Gorgos, struggling to climb up its body before spotting the creature's exposed core! He readies a shot, only to be interrupted by the volcano's cold eruption. With Gorgos' rampage only becoming exacerbated, Takeru somehow holds on to the beast, crawling into a crevasse along its body. Gorgos begins LOSING IT, standing upright, spinning around, trying to knock him free, before falling dead. Takeru emerges, holding the core, and tossing it up before shooting it out of the sky. The group, having retreated to the waterfall, is met by Takeru, who rushes them out of the way of the oncoming disaster, which leaves the body of Gorgos covered in snow.

Back in the village, Takeru has been shoved into a suit and cleaned up, only to be harassed by reporters as he and his sister try to leave. The episode ends with him breaking out of the suit to the noise of the kids' rocket taking off.

Notes: This is a sorta…mid episode? It's not bad, and it's quite action-packed, but that comes at a trade-off of mostly disregarding the lost forest child story. Having one guy take out a whole Kaiju on his own, though? Incredible. And Gorgos is pretty neat, sucks that it's a one-time thing.

Complications

Personality - Gorgos was relatively calm when on its own, but when it spotted humans, it instantly went after them with a vengeance.

Weakness - Gorgos is covered in various human-sized openings, allowing direct access to their core. If their core is removed (something that doesn't seem that hard to do), they will instantly die.

Background: Gorgos, the Rock Monster. Originally a space beast that crash-landed on Earth in the distant past, this immortal beast laid dormant underneath Japan for an unknown period of time, before seismic activity in the Pacific roused it. Gorgos, thrown out of their lair by a sudden geyser, was destroyed by charges set by a construction crew before its remnants were driven to the middle of the forest. In this forest, observed by local wildman Takeru, Gorgos' immortal core drew its body back together, reviving the Rock Monster for the first time in centuries. Gorgos quickly located the man and began a rampage, attempting to kill him and tearing down a part of the forest in the process. This rampage continued into the next day, with the resulting seismic activity causing Mt. Fuji to begin erupting early. Gorgos did not bother with the volcano, continuing to chase Takeru and several others. Eventually, the man would attack the creature directly. Utilizing their wildman abilities (and a borrowed gun), Takeru managed to tear Gorgos' core from its body and destroy it, leaving Gorgos dead under an avalanche from the erupting volcano. Thus ended the Rock Monster.

Notes: Gorgos certainly has the physical output to be a threat, but their lack of finesse leaves them at a paltry PL 10. Massively durable, with a low-grade Immortality & Regeneration effect, Gorgos has the potential to sustain a solid conflict even with stronger monsters. However, against smaller targets with sufficient precision and speed, they're almost a non-issue. Gorgos' core is exposed on its body and was torn out by a non-powered, albeit athletically proficient human. Anyone able to track down this weakness will have a Kaiju victory on the belt in seconds.

These are pretty wild and definitely run the gamut- I'm liking how it's not just "Big Monster" and the threats are all over the place, from Standard-Issue PL 14 Kaiju to this PL 10 wimp, to the giant plant that's more of a "The environment is the enemy" story to the retelling of the story with the turtle. And yeah, the turtle episode seems WEIRD. Just the writers & director going nuts with non-sequitors.

Ultra Q Ep. 8: "Terror of the Sweet Honey"

Post by OwOMotaros »

Image

"Terror of the Sweet Honey"

Episode Count: 8/28
First Appearance(s): Mongula (Only Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

We begin our episode on a late, stormy night, following a thief who's breaking into a laboratory greenhouse. His breaking and entering awakens a sleeping greenhouse caretaker, who watches as the man is attacked by the swarm of bees stored inside and runs away.

The next day, we find Ippei and Jun on a practice flight, following a transport train. In the midst of their flight, the two witness a spontaneous rockslide and the derailment of the train, which the two turn around to report. Meanwhile, outside the laboratory, we find Kimura, one of the head researchers, and his fiancé Aiko discussing the break-in, with Kimura still stressed by the possibility that an animal could've accidentally come in contact with an experimental nutrient supplement called "Honey Jellion", which he fears could have drastic consequences. The two are interrupted by the arrival of our three heroes and Professor Ichinotani, with Yuriko having asked him to assist with her investigation. One of the other researchers presents the group with the body of a bee born to a queen bee exposed to Honey Jellion, which has grown to an absolutely massive size (like, a foot long). He shows them a vial of the stuff (which Ippei almost DRINKS).

Meanwhile, outside, we find Kimura and Aiko interrupted by an old friend and fellow scientist, Itami, whose clear jealousy of their relationship leads Hasegawa to run off. At the same time, a farmer in the nearby fields spots a large bulging underneath his land, scaring him off and leading to the scientists and our main team arriving on the scene, where the bulge moves quickly through the fields before bursting out to reveal Mongula, the Mole Monster! Confirming the researchers' suspicions, the group retreats as Mongula continues rampaging throughout the fields.

Later on, we find Professor Ichinotani accompanying the police and researchers as they inspect the damage from Mongula's burrowing before the local villagers start blaming them for the destruction of their homes. Back at the greenhouse, we find Yuriko investigating the grounds around the hive, trying to discover how the mole got through, eventually coming to the conclusion that it must be some sort of conspiracy! Meanwhile, Kimura is seen blaming himself for the break-in, which Itami agrees with, causing Aiko to walk out of the situation as the head researcher, Ichinotani, and the main group walk in, revealing that it was Itami who broke in, allowing the mole in! They even drag through a witness, the greenhouse caretaker, who reveals that he saw it all. Itami runs off.

The entire group then sets out alongside a J.S.D.F detachment to a local cave system, where Mongula is believed to be hiding. While inside, they find Itami hiding within, who reveals that he'll be handling the monster himself, explaining his jealousy over Kimura's success, before running off as the cave begins to cave in as Mongula begins to rampage once more. Deeper inside, Itami sets off dynamite charges as he wishes Kimura and Aiko happiness and is caught in the explosion. Somehow, HE SURVIVES THIS, at least for a time, enough to tell them directly before dying in Kimura's arms. The group retreats as Mongula is revealed to have also survived, crawling out of the cave, only to be met by J.S.D.F. tanks & missile platforms. For a time, the massive mole survives this onslaught too, before the overwhelming military force causes it to retreat deep underground once more. This sets off a small volcanic eruption, leaving the surrounding area absolutely annihilated.

Notes: This episode is alright (though it's just the same thing as Goro & Goroh but with an on-purpose monster & a romantic subplot rather than a confused monkey-man subplot), though the only real importance of this episode is that it is the first appearance of Susume Kurobe, the man who would later portray the first Ultraman, as Kimura. You can tell, even now that he's gonna be good. Dude brings a notable presence.

Complications

Personality - Mongula isn't really a creature with a personality; simply a result of happenstance.

Background: Mongula, the Mole Monster. The result of a regular mole feeding on bee larvae infused with the powerful "Honey Jellion" nutrient enhancer, Mongula grew to massive size over the course of a little over a week, and caused damage to the village surrounding the quiet mountain laboratory by tunneling underneath their farmland and destroying their crops. Mongula's rampage didn't last long, however. Quickly caught up to by the scientist that caused its size change and injured by a large dynamite explosion, Mongula would be eventually forced underground by sustained artillery fire by the J.S.D.F., possibly dying in its escape by accidentally causing a small volcanic eruption.

Notes: Mongula is a very simple build, and is another example of Jab's Animal Builds coming in handy. Mongula is pretty much just Jab's Mole build, boosted up to Kaiju size and with a small Array of Area Effects. Like all Kaiju, Mongula would certainly be an issue to deal with, with high Damage & Durability & all, but with pretty much no real fighting experience and a limited appearance pool, Mongula is stuck at PL 10.

Ultra Q Ep. 9: "Baron Spider"

Post by OwOMotaros »

Image

"Baron Spider"

Episode Count: 9/28
First Appearance(s): Tarantula (Only Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

Our episode begins at a lighthouse manned by the Japanese Coast Guard. After receiving a report that something is off with their light, a worker goes to check, only to be attacked by a massive spider! His superior hears his fearful screams and arrives just in time to see his now-dead lackey wrapped in the monster's web, as the giant spider stands motionless at the staircase.

We move to our next scene, where we find our main three, alongside a group of friends, traveling along the coast after a party went late. After taking a shortcut, Ippei and their friend Takehara would end up nearly drowning in a swamp, found just in the nick of time. With the two coming down with some sort of sickness as a result, the group looks to find any nearby place to get them some rest, spotting a light coming from an old estate deep in the swamp. The group gets inside, and finds a very old home, dusty, creaking, covered in cobwebs, etc. Finding it empty, the group wonders where that light came from, and jokes about the possibility of a ghost.

Jun, with his investigative nature, determines this place to be the old residence of a man nicknamed Baron Spider. According to the myth, Baron Spider was a collecting maniac, who kept a variety of spiders in his home, which creeped out the locals. One day, after returning home with a particularly venomous spider, his daughter ended up a bit, freaked out, and fell into the bottomless swamp around the premises. The Baron eventually went mad and died, and his daughter was reincarnated into a tarantula who still stalks the mansion. After completing his story, the group ignores the story, with it especially scaring their friend Kyoko, before the condition of their friends gets worse, leading to them searching for medicine. While searching, Jun happens across an open window, with a lighthouse in the distance, solving where the light came from. At this same moment, one of their other friends, Hayama, finds a heavily webbed-up drinking room, and an ocarina, all the while stalked by the giant spider.

A little while later, we find Jun, having fallen asleep in the window room, waking up to find the giant spider staring back down at him! Of course, running the hell outta there, Jun tries to tell the others what he found, again refusing to believe him. Hayama returns with the alcohol and also refuses to believe Jun, before heading back to gather more. While back there, the spider strikes, alerting the group, who all head off to search. While the group recovers Hayama, the spider descends to attack the bedridden Takehara and then the wandering Kyoko! The main three get back to the entrance just in time to save Takehara, with Ippei and Jun attacking the beast. Ippei ends up on the floor, covered in webbing, as Jun manages to throw a knife into the creature's abdomen and stab it to death. Kyoko turns up, covered in webbing, barely able to stand, as the group runs out of the mansion, a second spider chasing after them! They all escape to their vehicles just in time, with Jun flooring it to crush the remaining spider, as the mansion collapses behind them, into the swamp.

Notes: I...do not fuck with spiders. On the other hand, decent horror episode. The quiet, empty mansion, with the looming threat of a man-sized nightmare creature from the deepest pits of Hell? Well done.

Tarantulas

The Tarantulas are terrifying, but not overly dangerous, killed by a lightly armed Jun, and Jun's car. Take Jab's Giant Spider build, bring the Growth down to 1, and the Webbing down to, like, Rank 4-5, and you're Gucci.

Ultra Q Ep. 10: "The Underground Express Goes West"

Post by OwOMotaros »

Image

"The Underground Express Goes West"

Episode Count: 10/28
First Appearance(s): M1 (First Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

Our episode begins at the Tokyo Central Station, where we find Ken "The Weasel", an insightful young man working as a shoeshiner. He encounters our girl Yuriko, who, along with Ippei, is at the scene to cover the test launch of the Inazuma, the world's fastest underground super-express. Ken, as well as a bar worker at the Station, Hechima, are determined to sneak aboard the Inazuma.

After getting a rundown of the train's systems, Yuriko, Ippei, and a group of other reporters are brought to the Inazuma, boarding alongside the disguised Ken and Hechima, performing the whole "three-kids-in-a-trenchcoat" maneuver to sneak in.

Meanwhile, Jun is meeting with a scientist who had delivered to transfer a newly-created artificial lifeform, M1, stored in a highly-pressurized suitcase to prevent its awakening. Asking to check the case beforehand, the two discover that this suitcase belongs to Ippei, and that he had accidentally brought the lifeform container onto the Inazuma! The call to inform them, however, comes much too late, as the express takes off.

While our stowaways attempt to keep their cover, Yuriko and Ippei discover the artificial lifeform within the suitcase, which is quickly confiscated by the crew and stored in an ultra-durable safe onboard. Eventually, our stowaways are found by one of the bigger crewmen, who catches Hechima, with Ken slinking away and hiding on the ceiling.

In the front cabin, one of the crewmen is stunned in fear as M1 awakens from the container, assuming an ape-like form, and begins messing around; fiddling with controls and shutting down the train's A.I system. Ken somehow sneaks his way to the front and discovers M1, astonished by the machine as the train begins to accelerate uncontrollably, passing all design specs. In a last-ditch effort to prevent casualties, the crewmen detach the front car from the passenger compartment, leaving it to run wild with M1 & Ken still aboard!

The station crew scrambles to stop the runaway super-train; activating emergency breaks, reversing thrust, etc, but all prove folly as M1 unknowingly fumbles with systems. The station crew then comes to a horrifying realization; the end of the line leads directly into a buffer that may kill the boy. Jun reaches out to the boy over radio, informing him of the danger. As the express exits the final tunnel, we see M1 sitting atop it as it slams into the barrier and under-construction station. The station manager sulks in sadness, realizing that the safe could've saved the boy's life. We then see that safe, shooting out into space alongside M1. Ken peeks out and sees M1, who simply says "I Am a Seagull", before entering orbit alongside him.

Notes: Ok, sooooo, I can't entirely explain why I like this episode, but I do. Despite the weirdness of the ending (Did the kid die or did he literally hit orbit in the safe), I really liked most of the episode. Ken is acted quite well, and the bumbling-ness of the station manager is good for the little comedic bits we get. None of our main cast does much, though, and M1 does not get to do much of anything. But I still like this. Sucks that I can't really build this M1. Guess we'll have to wait till I get to Ultraman X for his next appearance.

M1

Post by OwOMotaros »

Now, a little blurb about the kaiju I won't get to build here, but will definitely get to build in the future...

Image

Artificial Lifeform: M1

Notes: M1 doesn't get to do much in this episode, and then doesn't appear in any canon stories for nearly 50 years. While it's quite powerful in its later appearances (showcasing various odd powers including Teleportation of itself and others, growing to Ultra-Size, etc), this version is little more than a Construct with Intellect -2 and high-grade durability (surviving both an extremely-damaging train crash, and being launched into orbit).

Ultra Q Ep. 11: "Balloonga"

Post by OwOMotaros »

Image

"Balloonga"

Episode Count: 11/28
First Appearance(s): Balloonga (First Appearance)

Plot Synopsis

We begin our episode following a rocket on a return trip to Earth after exploring Saturn. The pilot, on approach, is contacted by ground control to prepare, before encountering system trouble as an unknown entity, referred to as a balloon, appears to drain the ship's fuel. It slowly crashes through the atmosphere and lands somewhere off the Japanese coast.

We switch our view to an airplane, where we find Jun and Yuriko investigating the crash site, a bit in awe at how calm the area is despite the devastating event. After some contemplation about a balloon at the coastline, they turn back to the airport, only to find their fuel empty.

The two land and Jun chastises Ippei, believing that he simply forgot to fill the plane up to full. Ippei says he did and heads out to investigate, finding a small, floating, balloon-ish object in the plane and bringing it to the others. They consider options, thinking maybe it was a bug or something. They put it in a box and drive off to see what else they can discover, before their car, too, randomly runs out of fuel. The object begins flowing out of the box, leading to a scared outburst and hot-potato-ing of the box by Ippei and Yuriko. They exit the vehicle as it begins to clog up traffic, and the balloon begins to grow. As the police arrive and a crowd forms, the balloon fills up the car in its entirety, slowly floating off the ground, before growing through the car and tearing it apart. In the destruction, parts of the car strike Ippei as he tried to defend Yuriko, leaving him bloodied and unconscious. The police open fire as the balloon floats further and further up.

We switch to the Daily News office, where we find the Boss berating an employee on their coverage of the "Balloonga" incident. Jun enters the office, informing Yuriko that Ippei's surgery went well, but he's not out of the woods yet. Yuriko feels guilty, but her focus is quickly turned to a journal Jun has sourced regarding the "first sighting of Balloonga", where a scientist, Akihiko Naramaru, found and killed a similar creature after it crashed into one of Japan's mountain ranges. Despite his notes and research, he was called a fraud and forced out of scientific circles as a result. He hasn't been seen since. Yuriko sets out to find him. Yuriko quickly tracks down his last place of residence (dated all of 20 years ago), and asks around with locals to see what she could find, coming up short.

We switch to a house near the coast, where an older man listens to the radio communications between the Saturn ship and ground control, before being interrupted by the arrival of the newspaper. Seeing the reports of Balloonga's arrival, he looks off in stoic fear.

Back in the city, we see Tokyo in pure panic as Balloonga, now at massive size floats over the metropolis, civilians running in fear and the JASDF hard-pressed to do anything, as their ordinance is simply absorbed into the creature. In the panicked crowds, Yuriko and the old man encounter each other, with the old man angrily stating that they're just feeding it.

At the "Balloonga Joint Headquarters", the press is informed that the JSDF is researching solutions, and cutting off power to the city to prevent any further absorption, as a full evacuation order is issued. As an ambulance is loaded with patients, we find Jun helping the evacuation efforts. He is informed that Ippei can't be moved in his state, as he and Yuriko decide to stay with him. Amidst banter between Jun and Yuriko, they come to a resolution to find the scientist once and for all, the next day. Setting out on bicycles, they spot the same balloon from the beach, being held by the same old man she had encountered beforehand, as he watched the creature from the distance. As he goes on about the loss of his son, he begins to disclose his knowledge of Balloonga, considering it no less than a force of nature. He releases his balloon as he stares into the distance.

Back at the hospital, we find the remaining patients being cordoned off into a special wing, as they decide to boot up their backup generator. The old man contemplates the futility of the fight before Jun decides to set off for the headquarters. That night, a typhoon hits the city, leaving the hospital's inhabitants stranded, powerless, into the night, as the storm gets more violent. Balloonga, in the center of the storm, absorbs more and more energy as the waters flood the city. The next morning, the storm clears, revealing Balloonga, still over the city, grown to absolutely enormous proportions. The old man approaches the doctors, watching from the hospital roof, informing them that Balloonga should return to space soon. His statement is immediately followed up by the activation of a U.N. diversionary tactic: a rocket with a device to create an artificial sun. The device works, and Balloonga exits the atmosphere. As the power returns and the doctors rush off the operate on their patients, Jun and Yuriko speak with the old man one more time. He tells them that Balloonga is a star-eating organism, brought to Earth by accident, and that his son was the pilot of the Saturn rocket. His long war against the creature is over, and Balloonga will surely consume or be consumed by the Sun. We leave our episode with the giant Balloonga floating off into the distance, with an uncertain fate ahead.

Notes: I'm not really sure what to say about this episode. I couldn't really follow the message of this story, either, but it's not...bad. Balloonga's another one of those force-of-nature threats, not intelligent, but incredibly dangerous to the world as a whole. If anyone can make out any of this, though, please, drop your thoughts.

Balloonga

I honestly couldn't pull a build out of this that didn't feel just…disgusting. Balloonga's mostly a plot device anyway. Effectively it’s a Balloon w/Immunity (Energy) and a Reaction (Absorbing Energy) Growth X. It doesn't seem to have a size limit, as it easily covers a good portion of Tokyo and could potentially EAT THE SUN.
