Factions and organizations such as temples, guilds, and secret societies are important forces in the social order of any civilization. Their influences stretch across multiple towns and cities, with or without a similarly wide ranging political authority. Organizations will play a major role in the lives of player characters, becoming their patrons, allies, or enemies just like individual nonplayer characters.

Backgrounds are a great way to connect adventures to the campaign world. As the game progresses though, backgrounds ties often become less important. Factions and organizations aimed at player characters are a way to keep higher level adventures connected to the campaign world, providing ties to NPC's and a clear agenda beyond individual gain. In the same way, civilization organizations create a ongoing sense of menace above and beyond the threat of solitary foes.

Adventurer organizations are also a great source of special rewards beyond experience points and treasure. Increased standing in an organization has value in and of itself, and also comes along with concrete benefits such as access to an organization's information, equipment, magic, and other resources.

There is a guide to Organizations and Renown in the DMG. I believe it is around pages 21-23. The DMG also gives some suggestions on what each faction rank would bring in terms of benefits/perks. Ideas provided are sources of information, safe houses, locations of hidden caches throughout the City, etc.,

This is something I've been wondering about. How should renown and class levels scale? This is the scale I use to level up based on renown(sorry for bad format)

Renown Level

1 0
3 1
10 4
25 9
50 13

4th level character's can request minor aid from their faction 1/week per faction. A faction agent like an Apprentice Wizard, Thug, or Spy helps the characters for 1 day. If this agent dies, characters of that faction lose 1d4 renown. In addition your character can take advantage of accelerated training programs for tool kits most often used by your faction. This training comes at a half time (and thus half cost) than usual tool training. Your character also has access to common magic items provided by their faction

9th level character's can request moderate aid from their faction 1/week per character. A faction agent (see above) helps the characters for 1 day. If this agent dies, the character that called upon the agent lose 1d4 renown unless they contribute to their funeral. In addition your character has access to uncommon magic items provided by the organization.

13th level character's can request major aid from their organization 1/week per character. A faction agent like a Drow Gunslinger, [Druid], Priest, or Veteran aids the party for 1 day. In addition your character has access to rare magic item's provided by their organization.

EDIT 1 : Idea's poached mainly from reddit
