-The largest of the Dogfish order, Kitefin Sharks can be up to 6 feet long, but are typically 3-4 feet. It is the longest bioluminescent vertebrate in the world. It eats fish, sharks and rays, as well as cephalopods & crustaceans, being a fairly potent predator for its size. They inhabit depths too deep to be any danger to humans (underwater fiber optic cables have been found with their teeth imbedded in them). They are a unique study in the effects of overfishing, as a massive fishery in Azores (far western European islands) was set up to exploit them for their oil and fins, which initially had catches of 900-1,000 tons annually, which dropped so badly that they barely got 15 tons one year, resulting in the fishery becoming unprofitable. They do live worldwide on many coastlines, however.

-Kitefin Sharks are small and weak compared to people, but are good, fast predators with a mean bite (-1 isn't much, but still just about what a full-grown human can do- not bad for an 18-lb. fish). Overall they're PL 0.5 defensively and PL 1.5 offensively.

Total: Abilities: 6 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 25 / Defenses: 11 (64)

Era: Modern
Range: Cold Northern waterways.
Colouring: Dark brown/grey.
Size: 8-24 feet long (800-3,100 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary
Diet: Anything edible.
Tactics: Sneak up on prey and tear off chunks.

-The absolutely massive Greenland Shark is the most famous of the "Sleeper Sharks", and is one of the most fascinating animals around, albeit still somewhat obscure. This creature has so many bizarre adaptations as a result of being a predator in below-zero temperatures- it has ANTI-FREEZING COMPOUNDS in its blood! And it's been proven that they are the longest-lived of all vertebrates- a Greeland Shark has recently been shown to be an astonishing two-hundred and seventy-two years old, with some estimates saying that these animals can live for five centuries!

-Greenland Sharks are generalist feeders, slowly moving in cold waters, eating just about anything. Because of certain chemicals in its body, its meat is toxic unless certain preparations are made (and of course, Because Humanity, people have figured out which preparations to use). They have been observed in Northern Europe and Canada, with some found in the St. Lawrence River. Thousands are caught as bycatch each year, and their position is considered vulnerable.

-Greenland Sharks aren't as fast or ravenous as most species, and are usually slow-moving. However, they are MASSIVE- they usually grow to 21 feet long and weigh 800 lbs., but but can get even larger than that- 2,200-3,100 lbs. have been observed in nature. They are thickset, heavy-bodied predators with small dorsal fins- their slow speeds actually help them in catching prey, who are often asleep- like many deepsea predators, they open their large mouths, creation a suction force that can draw in smaller prey. Prey is usually smaller fish and sharks, but seals can be taken by the bigger ones. Though huge, they are "only" PL 6, being slow-moving ambush hunters (though they thrash their tails about so strongly when hooked and brought to deck that most fishermen waste little time in killing them). It's not even clear how they catch seals (which they've been confirmed as having eaten via stomach contents)- it's possible they eat carrion or catch them sleeping.

-A few species of Sleeper Sharks are as gigantic as the Greenland Shark- the Pacific Sleeper Shark can apparently also reach 23 feet long, though the longest found is a paltry 14 feet and weighed 1,100 lbs. They have been far less studied than their more famous cousin, but have been found across much of the northern Pacific ocean- the slightly smaller Southern Sleeper Shark has been found across all the continents in the Southern Hemisphere.

-Overall, I went with PL 5-ish stats for the smaller Sleeper Sharks, compared to the big Greenland Shark.

-Among the Sleeper Sharks are the related Prickly and Bramble Sharks- both 10-13 feet long, with very tiny dorsal fins and dense coverings of dermal denticles, giving both their names. They are PL 4.5/4 predators with weak defenses but solid hitting power and durability. Much is still unknown about them- a Bramble Shark was observed to have a greenish glow when freshly caught, meaning they might be bioluminescent.

Total: Abilities: -24 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 28 / Defenses: 8 (26)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Indian & Pacific Oceans.
Stereotypes: Merciless hunters.
Colouring: Light brown.
Size: 3-5 feet long (10-18 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Small groups.
Diet: Small fish, sharks, rays, cephalopods, crustaceans.
Tactics: Ambush predators, attacking via rostrum swipe (likely).

-Sawsharks represent eight species in a single order (Pristioforiformes), evolving nearly exactly like Sawfish did, with long rostrums from their noses containing dozens of tiny spikes. Despite looking almost exactly the same, Sawfish are Rays and Sawsharks are Sharks, because nature is an ass that likes to confuse us. Sawsharks have a pair of long barbels halfway down their snout, two dorsal fins, and 5-6 gill slits on the sides of their bodies (Sawfish have them on the underside, like other rays). Unlike Sawfish, Sawsharks are all small, maxing out at 5 feet and 19 lbs. Despite being somewhat common, the Sawsharks are quite mysterious- we still aren't sure how they use their rostrums- it's merely assumed it's a similar way that Sawfish do- swiping and stunning prey (which consists of small fish & squid).

-Sawsharks include the Longnose, Shortnose, Japanese, Philippine, Bahamas, Tropical & Sixgill Sawhsharks- all between 4-5 feet long and weighing less than 20 lbs. Some are deeper-water fish than others (the Bahamas Sawshark can be found 1,000 feet below the surface- others are barely 100 feet deep). Some are so rare that no mature males have ever been studied (the Tropical Sawshark). A new species, the Dwarf Sawshark, was discovered only in 2011 and is VERY unknown- it appears to be less than two feet long but it's up in the air.

-Sawsharks are akin to Kitefin Sharks in terms of size and power- hitting PL 1.5. Nothing great, but better than nothing.

-Bullhead Sharks are a small order of nine species, many of whom are about 5'5" long maximum. They have square mouths, small barbels and pronounced eyebrow ridges. The Port Jackson Shark is probably the most well-known of this obscure order. A few Bullhead Sharks vary in size- resembling Spurdogs or Dogfish in stats. These Australian sharks are among the only who can eat and breathe at the same time- this is extremely rare in sharks. It's also one of the few to not have to swim in order to breathe- they are bottom-dwellers. Others include the Japanese & Crested Bullhead Sharks, measuring 4-5 feet. All are bottom-dwellers who mainly eat shellfish (crushed using plates in their mouths).

-Angel Sharks, the order of Squatiniformes, are very ray-like in appearance, sporting flattened bodies and strong pectoral fins. They swim about on the seafloor catching crustaceans and buried fish, like a lot of sharks do, and ensnare passers-by via the old "suction bite" trick. They put a layer of sand over themselves, rendering them almost invisible to passing fish. There are 25 species in the genus in total, covering nearly every coastline on the planet in differing amounts (some are incredibly rare).

-Angel Sharks have sharp teeth like most sharks, but weigh less than almost any adult, peaking at around 77 lbs. and usually being a fair bit lighter- as such, they're PL 3 attackers with PL 1.5 defenses.

-The Angelshark, or Monkfish, is the largest of the Angelsharks, and gives is name to the entire order- growing up to 8 feet long and 180 lbs. (in females), it is truly massive compared to the others. Still a bottom-dweller and not a threat to humans. Being in such a busy waterway, they are hard-pressed to make a living- the Angelshark is now Critically-Endangered.

Primitive Sharks

Post by Jabroniville »

PRIMITIVE SHARKS:
-The Hexanchiformes are an order of only seven remaining sharks of the most ancient lineage there is- these are primitive even compared to other sharks (with very simple digestive systems in particular), and are commonly recognized for their extra numbers of gills- the Cow Sharks typically have Sixgill and Sevengill in their name for this reason. Sevengills have the most gills of any animal in the world. The whole group consists of the Sixgills/Sevengills and the Frilled Sharks- the latter of which (the Southern African Frilled Shark) has only been discovered in 2009, and is still mostly unknown (only immature specimens have been found, but they are very much like the Frilled Sharks).

-The incredibly ancient and primitive-looking Frilled Shark is named for its six kaiju-looking gill covers. Unlike the vast majority of sharks, they do NOT have the same body shape and locomotion style- they are elongated, eel-like creatures with a similar swimming pattern. They are bottom-dwelling animals by day, but move vertically to the ocean's surface to feed by night. 300 recurved, needle-like teeth help them capture prey, which is swallowed whole instead of torn apart. Given their habitat, they are extremely hard to find, and are rarely-caught- they've sometimes been considered Endangered, but are now understood to be of "Least Concern". Unusually, their gestation can be as long as 3.5 years.

-Frilled Sharks are fairly large, snake-like predators that eat like gigantic eels, quickly turning and jerking around, then eating prey whole. They fit another PL 4 kind of shark.
