Sawfish

Post by Jabroniville »

SAWFISH:
-The last group of rays are the Sawfish, which greatly resemble sharks (especially Sawsharks, who are ridiculously similar)- they are among the world's largest fish, with 23-25-foot specimens, and they are named for their hugely elongated rostrums, with "teeth" (actually dermal denticles- skin attachments) stuck onto the sides. All are Endangered- slow breeders and live-bearing fish. They eat fish & invertebrates, caught by swiping at them with their saws- they are generally non-violent to humans, but can cause serious injuries with wild swipes of their rostrums when captured or defending themselves. There are five living species.

-These Sawfish are the smallest of their kind- about 11 feet long- I can't find any approximations of their weight, but they're likely less than half as heavy as the Smalltooth Sawfish. These include the Dwarf Sawfish of the South Pacific, the Knifetooth Sawfish of the Indo-Pacific, also called the Narrow Sawfish.

-The Largetooth Sawfish is the world's largest, being up to 23-25 feet long and over 1,000 lbs. They are Critically-Endangered throughout the Pacific, with only Australia having a relatively-healthy population- it's notable that the true giants are long-gone, and most species today are only about 8 feet long. Green Sawfish (also called Longcomb Sawfish) are of similar length, and live in the Indo-West part of the Pacific.

Sharks

Post by Jabroniville »

SHARKS:
-Sharks are the most infamous fish in the ocean, and legendary hunters. Few animals are more feared- their inhuman appearance, lack of emotions and sheer ferocity in battle make them terrifying opponents, though of course the danger is famously overstated. It's just that shark attacks are so horrible and stand-outish that they get an inordinate amount of focus, and movies like Jaws, featuring gigantic hunters.

Sharks are one of the most ancient creatures left in the world- their body plan has stayed largely unchanged for more than 160 million years. They have outlived the Trilobites, Dinosaurs and Mammoths, and lived through countless Countless Extinction Events. All this, despite being so "primitive" that they have boneless bodies with skeletons made of cartilege, a softer, weaker substance that results in few fossil remnants besides teeth.

Sharks are totally wild, though- the contain the world's largest bioluminescent creature (the 5-foot Kitefin Shark) AND the world's oldest vertebrate- a Greenland Shark has been proven to be TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-TWO YEARS OLD, and they can probably grow to be at least *500*! There's also the world's largest fish (the schoolbus-sized Whale Shark) and the terrifying predator that is the Great White. Never mind the ones that've left us, like the Megalodon.

There are nine orders of sharks in all, most using the exact same body plan (nature rarely makes mistakes when it comes to creatures that've been around for millions of years):
Squaliformes (dogfish/roughsharks)
Lamniformes (mackerel sharks)
Pristiophoriformes (sawsharks)
Echinorhiniformes (prickly/bramble sharks)
Orectolobiformes (carpet/nurse/whale/zebra sharks)
Squatiniformes (angel sharks)
Heterodontiformes (bullhead/horn sharks)
Hexanchiformes (cow/frilled sharks)
Carcharhiniformes (requiem sharks) Commonly known as ground sharks, the order includes the blue, tiger, bull, grey reef, blacktip reef, Caribbean reef, blacktail reef, whitetip reef, and oceanic whitetip sharks (collectively called the requiem sharks) along with the houndsharks, catsharks, and hammerhead sharks. They are distinguished by an elongated snout and a nictitating membrane which protects the eyes during an attack.

Squaliformes

Post by Jabroniville »

SQUALIFORMES (Dogfish & Roughsharks):
-The smallest sharks are in the Squaliformes, featuring 119 species, mostly called Dogfish Sharks. There are a few families, however- Dogfish Sharks, Kitefin Sharks (including the Cookiecutter Shark), Sleeper Sharks (mostly generic, but includes the titanic Greenland Shark), Gulper Sharks (the most "generic shark"-looking, though still barely 3 feet long), Bramble Sharks & Roughsharks (named for their rougher skin). Most still have names like "Dogfish" or "Spurdog", however. Most are about a meter (3 feet) long, while others are smaller. In general, these are PL 0-2- not a threat to most humans.

-The tiniest of sharks are only 10-20 inches long at maximum- these puny animals are almost all Squaliformes, like Dogsharks. The tiniest sharks are the Pygmy Shark & Dwarf Lanternshark, both under 12 inches long (the largest of the latter has been only 8 inches for a mature female). The Spined Pygmy Shark seems to have bioluminescence used to break up its silhouette to enhance stealth. Pocket Sharks are named for the small pocket glands on these 16-inch hunters- the glands' purpose remains unknown to science. The Japanese Roughshark is named for its families' rougher skin textures. The Taillight Shark, named for its pouch full of bioluminescent liquid that it releases in clouds, is also this size- this 20-inch predator is known from only four specimens collected. There's also the smallest of the Catsharks, including some False Catsharks and Finback Catsharks (the Magnificent & Pygmy Catsharks among them).

-These micropredators are about normal size for regular fish, and eat the same smaller prey they do. So this ends up being my "Generic Fish" build, plus Tracking on its scent.

-Dogfish, also known as Dog Sharks or Spiny Dogfish, are the smallest kinds of sharks. They are part of the Squaliformes order- the second-largest (with 119 species). They earned the name from fishermen watching them chase down smaller fish in dog-like packs. They have slender, streamlined bodies and pointed snouts. They average around a meter long in adulthood- 3 feet for males and 4 feet for females. Dogfish typically hunt small fish like herring & mackerel. Surprisingly, they also have VENOM- their dorsal spines are coated with a mildly toxic venom that can be harmful to humans. Dogfish migrate even more than other sharks, travelling up to 5,000 miles, going from the western U.S. to Japan.

-There are a few dozen Dogfish Sharks across two families, mostly matching this or the "Spurdog" size (about half as big). Similar relatives include the Kite-Fin Sharks and Sleeper Sharks (most of which are called "Velvet Dogfish" somewhere in the name), as well as a few Roughsharks (named for their slightly rougher skin) and Gulper Sharks. Spiny Sharks hold the record for longest gestation of any vertebrate- 22-24 months.

-This build will do for the various types of ultra-tiny sharks just a bit bigger than the tiniest ones. The Oman Bullhead Shark (of the Bullhead Shark order) is the same size, as is the Disparate Angelshark, only 19 inches long. Many of the Epaulette Sharks (a type of Bamboo Shark) and Catsharks (relatives of the Reqiuem Sharks) are also this small. Houndsharks are typically small sharks related to the Requiem Sharks (bull, blue, tiger, etc.)- a few are longer, but most are around 3-4 feet long.

-The various species of Lanternsharks are all very tiny animals named for their light-producing photophores. Some look truly horrifying, like the Viper Dogfish, which is unique among sharks for protruding its jaws out and impaling prey on needle-like teeth. Most of the 50+ species are between 16-25 inches long with small mouths, and are quite numerous (though rarely caught, living so deep in the ocean).

-The Cookiecutter Shark is unique among animals in that we knew of its existence for decades before actually seeing it in action, as the distinctive bite-size chunks taken out of large sea life had been apparent for years. Tons of whales, large sharks and even inanimate objects had these little bits bitten out, as if via template, making it clear SOMETHING was biting off pieces of them, and lo and behold, we finally discover taht the Cigar Shark- a Dogfish relative with suction-like lips that latches onto creatures and uses their sawlike teeth to cut out a circular hole and eat it! These had been discovered as far back as 1824, but the bite-marks' origin was unknown until 1971, resulting in the Cigar Shark getting a new nickname- the Cookiecutter.

-As Cookiecutters are barely 20 inches long, many creatures can survive this kind of bite, resulting in distinctive scar-marks- victims include nearly any animal in their range, from Megamouth & Great White Sharks to pinnipeds to whales & dolphins (an old Samoan myth says that the "Ahu", Skipjack Tuna, used to leave pieces of its body as an offering). The animals typically live in the deep ocean (explaining why they were rarely caught), migrating a kilometer vertically in order to feed, before descending again at night.
