Encounter Groups: Solitary or small groups of young
Diet: Fish, crustaceans
Tactics: Silent and slow, but then rapidly accelerates with a lethal lunge.

-The Barracuda is a good example of a mid-tier oceanic hunter, and of course the inspiration for a pretty cool "Heart" song (man, Heart rocked. Tons of bad-ass stuff from those ladies). Weighing less than most people, it's still a pretty terrifying fish- they can and have attacked swimmers (either mistaking a shiny object on them for a fish, or being provoked with spears), causing very ugly wounds with their powerful jaws and knifelike teeth. Most mature specimens are 20-40 lbs., but exceptional examples can weight over 100!

-It's only PL 4, but still pretty mean and nasty.

Billfish

Post by Jabroniville »

BILLFISH:
-The order of Istiophoriformes contains the Barracuda, but two other families make up the Billfish: Swordfish and the Marlins (which include Marlins & Sailfish)- all famous for using their extended bills as weapons. Most use them as stunning weapons, injuring their smaller fish prey. These are among the fastest fish in the world, hitting speeds of 20+ mph- they compress their large dorsal fins and sails against their bodies until it's time to attack.

-10 feet long and weigh up to 200 lbs. Sailfish press their sail into their bodies when swimming (it fits into a groove on their back), but raise it when hunting, as it keeps their bodies more stable and prevents prey from seeing their elongated bill so well. This group includes the Atlantic & Indo-Pacific Sailfish.

-Sailfish are good fighters, but not as big as other Billfish.

-Swordfish are a very big, very heavy sport-fishing mascot that puts up spectacular, hour-long fights when it's hooked. They're quite popular, but vulnerable to extinction. Their famous bill is certainly used as a weapon, used to either stun or spear smaller prey right through.

-Such a creature could be of many different Power Levels, as they can fight off most predators, but they are occasionally victimized by Mako Sharks, so I think PL 7 sounds about right for the "Elite" version, with PL 4-5 for the lesser fighters. After all, they mainly hunt smaller, weaker prey that can hardly fight back, but they can still kill the occasional Shark that comes hunting.

-Similar stats go to the Blue Marlin, a larger (2,000 lbs.) species of Billfish, but I built this one because the Marlins aren't known to regularly use their bills as weapons, and these ones are. I don't think there'd be much variation in the stats anyways.

-Marlins are even larger than Swordfish on average, and put up similar fights when hooked. Females are four times the size of males, who rarely exceed 350 lbs. The Indo-Pacific Blue Marlin maxes out about 1,400 lbs., the Black Marlin at 1,600 lbs., and the Atlantic Blue Marlin at about 1,800 lbs. All will use their bills to stun prey. All are very fast, with the Black Marlin often being exaggerated in the media at up to 82 mph, but 22 mph is closer to their real maximum.

Disabled (Animal)- Fish cannot speak to humans, nor use their fins to easily manipulate objects.
Disabled (Aquatic)- Fish typically will not last long on land- they are borderline immobile, can't defend themselves, and will slowly dehydrate or suffocate.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, these fish are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on these fish effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -36 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 32 / Defenses: 7 (18)

Era: Modern Day
Range: All waters of the Earth.
Stereotypes: Ravenous blood-suckers
Colouring: White, grey, brown, black
Size: 5-40 inches long (less than a pound)
Encounter Groups: Hordes of two to thousands.
Diet: The blood of fish or sea mammals.
Tactics: Strike quietly and latch on.

-Closely related to the Hagfish, Lampreys are equally ancient, jawless creatures with skeletons of cartilege and many primitive functions- a two-chambered heart, "dots" for gills and limited eye functions, as well as no proper stomach. The 38 species of Lamprey are cold-blooded creatures who are sluggish in cold water (but this allows them not to have to eat as much). Their hideous, funnel-shaped mouths make them somewhat fearful and gives them a negative reptuation (plus... they're blood-suckers). Only some species of Lamprey are predatory, however- their species name means "Rock-Suckers", as several eat algae by latching onto shore-rocks and sucking the algae off of them.

-Lampreys are shockingly a delicacy in many places- English royalty used to eat them a LOT, and many European countries made a go of it. The meat is very rich and not that healthy to eat, though. Plus Lampreys have to be cooked a certain way or they're somewhat toxic. They are a pest species in the Great Lakes region, as they were introduced there and have no natural predators, while damaging Lake Trout popuations. Many, like the Pacific Lamprey, spend most of their lives as plankton-eating larvae, and only take adult form for a relatively short period of time. Pacific Lampreys will actually attached themselves to things like Sperm Whales!

-Lampreys have pretty generic stats despite being so weird, but are good grapplers, being able to latch on with those horrifying mouths. "Blood-Sucking" isn't really that different from regular damage/eating, however. It's only barely worth it enough to qualify as "Weaken"- deadly to small fish but large mammals could keep them around for a while.

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Fish cannot speak to humans, nor use their fins to easily manipulate objects.
Disabled (Aquatic)- Fish typically will not last long on land- they are borderline immobile, can't defend themselves, and will slowly dehydrate or suffocate.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, these fish are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on these fish effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Era: Modern Day
Range: East Asia.
Stereotypes: Emotionless, blank creatures.
Colouring: Red, green, gold, black, grey.
Size: Up to 3 feet long (1-5 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Small groups.
Diet: Smaller fish.

-Also called the Bonytongue or Arowana, the Dragonfish of East Asia is named for the barbles on its lower jaw, resembling the Asian Dragon. This has been a boon and trouble for the creatures, as they are popular in the pet trade, but also are now quite endangered by those seeking their body parts for medicinal properties. They come in a variety of colors- green, red, gold, etc., depending on which part of Asia they are from.
