ANIMAL BUILDS:

-It's time for a full re-posting of one of my favourite (and handiest) sets of builds- ANIMAL BUILDS!

"Official" RPG Builds For Animals:
I make no secret of the fact that I tend to find the "official" builds for animals in most rulebooks well short of my standards, but I don't begrudge most gaming systems for that. The 2nd Edition M&M Rulebook clearly just cut & pasted the HORRIBLE D&D standard builds for animals and threw them into the book to save space, and the 3rd Edition rulebook isn't too much better. So they leave stuff out, undercut animals' strength to fit them into the PLs they think are accurate, and more. How else could you explain their Strength 16 Horse in 2nd Edition (for the record, this is giving Daredevil/Nightwing strength to a 1,000-pound animal)?

But really, these tend to be small sections for "just in case" scenarios, and the game designers often have more important things to worry about than give anything other that weak, baseline versions of what some animals are. So I feel that somebody with nothing better do do (like say, me) can hammer out more accurate builds, given some Wikipedia searching, etc.

The Usefulness of Animal Builds:
-I've actually discovered this quite a bit over the years- after having done the builds for the first time, I found myself re-using them AGAIN AND AGAIN, for various characters. Many people could transform into animals, or Summon them, first of all, but even MORE characters use Animal Senses or Animal Powers as a capability. And what easier way to determine those capabilities than to just Cut & Paste based off of builds I'd already done.

I've also had a ton of people PM me over the years to tell me that despite not really paying attention to the builds the first go-round, they've actually found it tremendously useful to have stats for, say, an Ostrich lying around. Ya never know when The Penguin is going to get very theme-y with his lair again.

How Animal Work in Comics:
* Animals are a bit weird in superhero fiction- someone like Daredevil can take on a Class 6 Powerhouse and actually hold his own, often winning due to his extreme skill (easily-statted in M&M with his superior Accuracy and a Powerhouse's lower Defense). However, you'll often notice that a Lion or something, which is SIGNIFICANTLY weaker than someone who can lift six tons, is treated as this DIRE THREAT that the hero could never defeat. It's an odd disconnect. It's REALISTIC that a human being could never beat a lion... but then why is a MUCH STRONGER MAN a minor threat? (answer: because the story requires it, duh)

* Perfect example: In one Batman story, the Detective had to CHEAT to defeat a single Leopard (he wrapped it up in his cape and fired a sedative into it)- a creature no larger than most men. Animals are often given TREMENDOUS respect in comics. Other animals, including Sidekicks like Red Wolf's Wolf, are also incredibly-gifted fighters.

* Oddly, in other cases, Animals aren't so lucky. In the Savage Land, DINOSAURS of all things are often used as giant Background Noise and Jobbers- I've seen guys like Pyro nuke a whole T-REX by himself. But in other books, it's established that large dinosaurs are incredible adversaries, immune to most of the punishment humans can dish out.

How Animals Work in Real Life:
* Animals in real life can be incredibly-dangerous. Anyone who lives in poor areas without adequate shelter can tell you what it's like when large predators are roaming free (India has issues with Leopards and Tigers simply WALKING INTO HOMES and taking people away), and people who work with animals in farms or zoos will tell you the incredible strength some of them can muster. Some predators (Bears, Big Cats) can easily-kill an unarmed human being. Quadrupeds like cattle & horses can actually fatally-injure people BY ACCIDENT- my grandfather is a full-time farmer in his 70s, and is quite often getting roughed up because some cow got protective with a calf, or a horse randomly-kicked.

* Despite their danger, animals are vulnerable to certain things- humans have hunted animals with weapons since we sharpened our first sticks- the reach advantage could be paramount, especially as animals often didn't understand that the tip of a spear could be dangerous, and were left vulnerable. The advent of arrows, thrown weapons, and later GUNS made things even more unfair- animals never understood where the damage was coming from, and often simply sat there (left Vulnerable or Defenseless), being easily shot by a Power Attacking hunter.

* Part of what makes animals so dangerous is the fact that they tend to go ALL-OUT in a way that humans aren't prepared for- a predator is fighting to not starve, and herbivores often fight for their LIVES. So animals put everything into their fighting, which often overwhelms human beings enough that a 100-lb. DOG can actually be quite scary for a full-grown man.

How Animal Stats Work:
Ability Scores:
* Animals usually have much higher muscle-density than human beings, and are often quite strong for their size- their Stamina and Agility are often quite high as well. They either have decent Fighting or Close Combat at a specific thing, but rarely every have any kind of Dexterity (as Animals can't use Vehicles or Ranged Attacks for the most part, this stat is completely useless). Their Intellect score is generally always -4, as Animals are incapable of the critical thought common to even dumb people. They can't read, write, use many Skills, etc. However, a few types are exceptionally-bright, such as Dolphins and Apes, and can hit -3. Similarly, a Hero's Animal Sidekick might have some extra Intelligence to explain why they can often understand their masters. Technically, most animals are "log-jammed" in there.

* Awareness tends to be a bit higher, especially in more "Special" creatures that work like Evil-Detecting Dogs in fiction. Most Animals have at-worst Awareness 0. Presence is usually -3, as animals aren't good at Persuasion or Deception.

Skills:
* These are often pretty simple: Athletics and Perception are generally very high (more than for most people), as is Stealth in many wild creatures. Most have Expertise (Hunter/Survival) to reflect Animals' capability to survive in the wild. Few animals are overly-fancy with this.

Advantages:
* These can vary a bit, but generally aren't too extreme. Many animals can shift their Offensive Caps around quite well, have Diehard, or Improved Critical, especially if they're a "Special" variant.

Powers:
* Animal Senses are famously-high, with Dogs at the upper tiers. Other varieties have senses like a Dolphin's Sonar, a Shark's Lateral Lines, or even Electrolocation.

* Larger animals have a small issue with Strength- they can't lift upwards of 12 tons as a general rule, but many of them do much more damage than +6. As such, I tend to throw "Strength-Damage" bonuses to many creatures. Animals with Natural Weapons that do more damage have this in even larger amounts.

Growth:
* Growth, as always, is a bit tricky, but since it's always Permanent with Animals, it generally just offers a discount in points cost. I throw on "Innate" (a Feat I typically never use, as almost ANY power can be Innate if you get into it) just to negate this cost a bit. Generally, I don't include neck length or tails into the size. Still, it's a bit tricky- many animals are taller than they are long, or vice-versa. Many animals are only a LITTLE bigger than a human being, and so I'll just stick Reach or Features: Increased Mass onto them.

Accuracy & Defenses:
* It varies, but larger animals typically have greater Accuracy- in real life, being larger means you can strike your opponent without being struck in return. As well, large animals will beat smaller ones of similar types (Cape Buffalo are dangerous, but no match for Rhinos), and so their accuracy will be at LEAST equal, with added Power, creating a larger Power Level differentiation. However, larger animals usually have poorer Dodge scores- animals can be pretty easy targets, unless they're moving. In general though, most animals have better Parry than Dodge. Animals tend to have reasonable Will, and better Fortitude than most people (assuming they're larger), but not so much that poisons and sedatives won't work as well.

Animal Speed:
* Animals are generally much faster than humans, because we are fat and slow, being bipedal primates. We have better cardio, but in general, they'll outrun us. For animals, I take their maximum recorded speed and subtract it by 2 amounts, allowing them to boost it with Athletics & Extra Effort- this leaves them tired, but most animals can't maintain maximum speed for great lengths of time.

Dog Builds

CANIDAE FAMILY (Order- Carnivora)
-It's hard to get past how important dogs have been to humanity. Probably the earliest domesticated animal, coming from Wolves that realized hanging out with these organized human-things could be profitable for both sides, Dogs aided us in hunts, and grew to be used for any number of purposes, such as defense of habitations, tracking prey, and finding certain objects. Currently, they are the most loyal of our pets, and the most like us in many ways. Interestingly, they have the greatest amount of variation amongst one simple species known to science- a Dachshund, a Rottweiler and a Great Dane are all the same scientific Species, despite being vastly different in size, appearance and more. Apparently, it's because of some kind of "Variable DNA" that easily mutates over time, allowing the creation of whole new types within a generation or two. Dogs are now used for companionship, play, sport, hunting, rescue, police/army work, etc.

These are entirely derived from the Gray Wolf, the largest of the canine species (before the Molosser breeds were developed- the Mastiffs, Danes, Rottweilers, etc.). Ancient animals like the Pharaoh & Ibizan Hounds, the Tibetan Mastiff and Japanese breeds, etc., are more closely related, but now all dogs are. It leads to some confusion amongst scientists, as the previous lingo for "species" meant that the animals within one couldn't breed properly with another. But all Dogs can breed with Wolves & Coyotes. Nowadays, Dogs are merely recognized as a subspecies of the Gray Wolf.

Dog Breeding is a controversial thing for many reasons- in many cases, long-term breeding has created inbreeding, poor behavioral traits, genetic conditions (hip problems are common in larger breeds- as are shorter life spans), and in many cases, the animals have no survival capabilities- some breeds are actually INCAPABLE of breeding without human intervention- their heads are now too broad to fit through the birth canal. It doesn't help that Hybrids benefit from "Hybrid Vigor" and are much healthier, and that Dog Breeding was, for centuries, a sign of the wealthy upper classes.

Dogs are common the entire world over, being mankind's most faithful servant. They're known for unending loyalty, guardianship, and being pretty noisy. Wolves, Foxes & Coyotes are viewed as pests by a lot of the world, and the Wolf especially has been demonized by various stories and myths for centuries, only now being recognized as an animal of some value. Only the intelligent Coyote has avoided the mass extermination brought on by farmers and other people, whereas its cousins are vastly reduced in range and numbers.

Dogs are also notable for being one of the most fearless animals in the world- many breeds have been trained to take on basically anything, and never stop being aggressive. This is a relic of the era of "animal fighting" (though many cultures still practice that today)- dogs are one of the few animals trained to literally fight to the death. This can be a great advantage in situations where they're against a larger, stronger opponent, who will usually hold something back for its own protection.

Can Dogs beat Wolves in a fight? Generally speaking, no. But it's hard to give a final say, as most injured Wolves will simply run. Of course, searching for this on the internet is always tricky, as every forum is full of giant idiots, wannabe geniuses and "Internet Badasses" who jump to conclusions, announce themselves as experts, make snap judgments based off of what they WANT to be true, and more. Look for lots of goofy posturing, then a lot of "Breed Haters" and "Breed Lovers" arguing (apparently Pit Bulls, often called "Game Pits", are considered overrated and fall before the other Fighting Breeds... which are, since this is the internet, usually more amazing the more-obscure they are). And of course many people think their own favourite dog breed would beat ANY Wolf. Because people are stupid.

Danger to Humans: Immense. Dog attacks are actually INCREDIBLY common, and the death toll puts them among the most-deadly animals in North America, where there are at least three-dozen dog-related deaths PER YEAR in the United States. They kill WAY more people than Wolves, Bears or Cougars do, but of course this is all due to perception and population: Dogs are of course VERY numerous, and nearly-constnatly around people. Which means that dog attacks are omnipresent, and FATAL attacks are still frequent. It should be noted that the vast, VAST majority of fatal attacks are committed against small children (under 9 years, typically) or the elderly- exactly the kind of people who cannot fight back against savage animals. The breeds are sadly quite regular: it's always large, powerful breeds, often attacking in groups.

Bullmastiffs, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and of course the infamous Pit Bulls, make up the vast majority of fatal attacks. Pit Bulls are SO often the attacker, in fact, that many cities across North America have banned owning the breed outright. More on that when I get to "Fighting Dogs". Also, don't look up Fatal Dog Attacks on Google- some people don't warn you that there are pictures of dead CHILDREN on the webpages.

Breed Standards

Post by Jabroniville »

Note: This is what a full American Kennel Club "Breed Standard" looks like-

OFFICIAL STANDARD OF THE DALMATIAN

General Appearance: The Dalmatian is a distinctively spotted dog; poised and alert; strong,
muscular and active; free of shyness; intelligent in expression; symmetrical in outline; and
without exaggeration or coarseness. The Dalmatian is capable of great endurance, combined with
fair amount of speed. Deviations from the described ideal should be penalized in direct
proportion to the degree of the deviation.

Size, Proportion, Substance: Desirable height at the withers is between 19 and 23 inches.
Undersize or oversize is a fault. Any dog or bitch over 24 inches at the withers is disqualified.
The overall length of the body from the forechest to the buttocks is approximately equal to the
height at the withers. The Dalmatian has good substance and is strong and sturdy in bone, but
never coarse.

Head: The head is in balance with the overall dog. It is of fair length and is free of loose skin.
The Dalmatian's expression is alert and intelligent, indicating a stable and outgoing
temperament. The eyes are set moderately well apart, are medium sized and somewhat rounded
in appearance, and are set well into the skull. Eye color is brown or blue, or any combination
thereof; the darker the better and usually darker in black-spotted than in liver-spotted dogs.
Abnormal position of the eyelids or eyelashes (ectropion, entropion, trichiasis) is a major fault.
Incomplete pigmentation of the eye rims is a major fault. The ears are of moderate size,
proportionately wide at the base and gradually tapering to a rounded tip. They are set rather high,
and are carried close to the head, and are thin and fine in texture. When the Dalmatian is alert,
the top of the ear is level with the top of the skull and the tip of the ear reaches to the bottom line
of the cheek. The top of the skull is flat with a slight vertical furrow and is approximately as
wide as it is long. The stop is moderately well defined. The cheeks blend smoothly into a
powerful muzzle, the top of which is level and parallel to the top of the skull. The muzzle and the
top of the skull are about equal in length. The nose is completely pigmented on the leather, black
in black-spotted dogs and brown in liver-spotted dogs. Incomplete nose pigmentation is a major
fault. The lips are clean and close fitting. The teeth meet in a scissors bite. Overshot or undershot
bites are disqualifications.

Neck, Topline, Body: The neck is nicely arched, fairly long, free from throatiness, and blends
smoothly into the shoulders. The topline is smooth. The chest is deep, capacious and of moderate
width, having good spring of rib without being barrel shaped. The brisket reaches to the elbow.
The underline of the rib cage curves gradually into a moderate tuck-up. The back is level and
strong. The loin is short, muscular and slightly arched. The flanks narrow through the loin. The
croup is nearly level with the back. The tail is a natural extension of the topline. It is not inserted
too low down. It is strong at the insertion and tapers to the tip, which reaches to the hock. It is
never docked. The tail is carried with a slight upward curve but should never curl over the back.
Ring tails and low-set tails are faults.

Forequarters: The shoulders are smoothly muscled and well laid back. The upper arm is
approximately equal in length to the shoulder blade and joins it at an angle sufficient to insure
that the foot falls under the shoulder. The elbows are close to the body. The legs are straight,
strong and sturdy in bone. There is a slight angle at the pastern denoting flexibility.
Hindquarters: The hindquarters are powerful, having smooth, yet well defined muscles. The
stifle is well bent. The hocks are well let down. When the Dalmatian is standing, the hind legs,
viewed from the rear, are parallel to each other from the point of the hock to the heel of the pad.
Cowhocks are a major fault.

Feet: Feet are very important. Both front and rear feet are round and compact with thick, elastic
pads and well arched toes. Flat feet are a major fault. Toenails are black and/or white in blackspotted dogs and brown and/or white in liver- spotted dogs. Dewclaws may be removed.

Coat: The coat is short, dense, fine and close fitting. It is neither woolly nor silky. It is sleek,
glossy and healthy in appearance.

Color and Markings: Color and markings and their overall appearance are very important
points to be evaluated. The ground color is pure white. In black-spotted dogs the spots are dense
black. In liver-spotted dogs the spots are liver brown. Any color markings other than black or
liver are disqualified. Spots are round and well-defined, the more distinct the better. They vary
from the size of a dime to the size of a half-dollar. They are pleasingly and evenly distributed.
The less the spots intermingle the better. Spots are usually smaller on the head, legs and tail than
on the body. Ears are preferably spotted. Tri-color (which occurs rarely in this breed) is a
disqualification. It consists of tan markings found on the head, neck, chest, leg or tail of a blackor liver-spotted dog. Bronzing of black spots and fading and/or darkening of liver spots due to
environmental conditions or normal processes of coat change are not tri-coloration. Patches are a
disqualification. A patch is a solid mass of black or liver hair containing no white hair. It is
appreciably larger than a normal sized spot. Patches are a dense, brilliant color with sharply
defined, smooth edges. Patches are present at birth. Large color masses formed by intermingled
or overlapping spots are not patches. Such masses should indicate individual spots by uneven
edges and/or white hairs scattered throughout the mass.

Gait: In keeping with the Dalmatian's historical use as a coach dog, gait and endurance are of
great importance. Movement is steady and effortless. Balanced angulation fore and aft combined
with powerful muscles and good condition produce smooth, efficient action. There is a powerful
drive from the rear coordinated with extended reach in the front. The topline remains level.
Elbows, hocks and feet turn neither in nor out. As the speed of the trot increases, there is a
tendency to single track.

Temperament: Temperament is stable and outgoing, yet dignified. Shyness is a major fault.

-Min Pins are a fairly-standard "Small Dog", and can be used to stat up any small Toy Breed, like the Miniature Poodle, Dachshund ("Dahks-Hoond", not "Dash-hound") or Chihuahua. They're tiny, yappy and annoying, but cute enough that plenty of people love them, and excuse behaviors that would lead to disipline in a larger breed, creating problem dogs. The comparative ease of owning a tiny breed compared to a large one makes them enormously-popular, since you don't go poor buying them food, and can keep them in an apartment. It also helps that small breeds live longer, with many small dogs living past their 20th year- most larger breeds will be lucky to see their twelfth birthday.

-Min Pins are *-1* in Power Level offensively, as they couldn't hope to beat ANYTHING in a fight (and remember- that's the ELITE Min Pin), but require some jumbling of the stats to make them work, as their tiny size can make them elite fighters. Also, like many smaller breeds, they have "Small Dog Syndrome", leading them to be yappy, hyperactive creatures which often try to boss around everyone and get their own way.

Ugh, there are some races that were specifically selected for this purpose, like the Irish Wolfhound, but I agree on the general sentiment.

Dodge +3 (DC 13), Parry +3 (DC 13), Toughness -3, Fortitude -1, Will +4

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Dogs cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.
Relationship (Owner)- Domestic dogs are intensely loyal to their masters, and will fight to the death to protect them.
Responsibility (Arrogant)- Sitting on another being is a show of dominance; because of their small size, many toy breeds are allowed to sit on people. This gives them an inflated sense of self-worth, and makes them prone to arrogance and behavioral issues.
Weakness- Dogs are utterly incapable of lying. Their entire body reflects their current mood. Just watch them if you notice your lamp is broken, and you will know who did it.

Total: Abilities: -22 / Skills: 10--5 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 23 / Defenses: 4 (12)

-The "Toy Group" is the set of extremely tiny household companion-dogs, though some have had various uses. None are good at fighting, and most were used as living "lap warmers" or symbols of prestige. The Russian Toy is one of the earliest to make itself known among European nobility, but the Shih Tzu of China had the same use and was even older. They're functionally the same as the Min Pin.

Small Dogs:
* The following dogs will use the same build.

Russian Toy: Extremely tiny, looks like a furry Chihuahua. The original "Purse Dog" of the nobility.
Affenpinscher: Fuzzy-bearded dog.
Brussels Griffon: A bearded breed.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: A fancy-looking long-eared breed.

Image

Chihuahua: The smallest dog breed in the world, hailing from Mexico. A constant flavor in pop culture. Appears in short or long-haired varieties.
English Toy Spaniel: Fad dog of the Reinaissance in England.
Havanese: Long fur around the face. From Cuba.

Image

Italian Greyhound: Miniature greyhounds.
Japanese Chin: Known for their scrunched-up faces.
Maltese: Doll-like white fur.
Manchester Terrier: Looks kinda like a Min Pin.

Image

Pekingese: Compact, squat dogs with a ton of fur. Pong-Ping of Rupert the Bear fame was one of these.
Pomeranian: One of the few to match a Chihuahua in size, with a lot more fur.
Toy Poodle: Miniature version of the larger breed.

Image

Pug: Famously "Ugly Cute" breed with short ears and a dignified pose. Often have breathing problems.
Shih Tzu: Tiny terrier with a goofy beard.
Silky Terrier: Kinda like a Yorkie.
Toy Fox Terrier: Another generic small dog, like a Min Pin.

Image

Yorkshire Terrier: Dainty dogs with extremely long hair.
Biewer Terrier: Tiny piebald offshoot of the Yorkshire Terrier.
Coton de Tulear: Fluffy poof dog from Magadascar's nobles.
Tibetan Spaniel: Tiny Tibetan watchdog.
Portuguese Podengo Pequeno: Ultra-tiny rabbit-hunters.

-Though not all of these are "Ratters", that's the typical use for a dog this size- enough muscle to kill a rodent, but a small enough size to still fit into a burrow or under a chair or something. Most of these are between 10-20 lbs. Functionally they're as durable as a Toy Dog, but are better fighters and have "Favored Foe" for their chosen enemy.

Small Dogs:
* The following dogs will use the same build.

Lhasa Apso: 1,000-year old breed that guard Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas.
Miniature Poodle: Barely bigger than the Toy Poodle.
Chinese Crested: Possibly an ancient arrival to China from Africa, turned into a "Chinese Ship Dog" good at ratting aboard maritime vessels.
Bishon Frise: Famously-poofy.
Boston Terrier- PL 1 (18): Small fight-y type mixed between terrier & bull-type dogs to make for fun ratters and fighters. (FIGHTING +1)
Löwchen: German companion breed.

Image

Schipperke: Hilarious-looking short black dogs with bulging eyes in some pictures.
Xoloitzcuintli: 3,000-year old hairless dog of the Aztecs.
American Hairless Terrier: Like most Terriers, but hairless. From Louisiana.
Tibetan Terrier: Not really a terrier- similar to the Lhasa Apso, but more of a companion dog.
Border Terrier: Tiny, hard-working wirehair-type.
Australian Terrier: Looks like a less-fluffy Yorkie to me.

Image

Cairn Terrier: Bushy lil' fox-hunters. Very courageous.
Cesky Terrier: Czech terrier breed.
Glen of Imaal Terrier: Gentle terrier from a remote part of Ireland.
Dandie Dinmont Terrier: Like fluffy weiner dogs, but hardy farm-workers.
West Highland White Terrier: Bred to be ratters.
Scottish Terrier: English icon, built to hunt foxes & rats. Usually shown to represent a Scottish stereotype.

Image

Rat Terrier: Short-haired ratters.
Norwich Terrier- PL 0 (17): Brave despite weighing about 10 lbs. (Fearless)
Norfolk Terrier: Another ratter, looks kind of like the Norwich.
Manchester Terrier (Standard): Looks like a regular Pinscher, but small.
Whippet- PL 0 (17): Famously wimpy-looking dogs who were bred from unknown breeds to create a Greyhound-like dog for poorer English farmers- the "Poor Man's Racehorse" resulted. (Speed +1)

-Slightly larger than the earlier dogs, these breeds are typically meant for hunting slightly larger prey than rodents- foxes are typically the #1 target, as they were notorious for killing fowl, goats, and other farm animals. Others can hunt otters (which is no mean feat, though European otters weren't really that tough).

Small Dogs:
* The following dogs will use the same build.

Image

French Bulldog: Smaller, dapper-looking bulldog type. Usually under 25 lbs.
Norwegian Lundehund: Great-climbing puffin-hunters.
Bedlington Terrier: Smart, quick companion dog with good athleticism.
Lakeland Terrier: Small cone-faced dogs with fluffy faces, meant to hunt foxes in large packs.
Wire Fox Terrier: Meant to bolt foxes from their dens during hunts.
Welsh Terrier: Bred to hunt otters, badgers and other clawed mustelids- courageous and fearsome.
Smooth Fox Terrier: Another fox-hunter, this one looks kinda like a Jack Russel Terrier to me.

Image

Russell Terrier: Fox-hunting & working breeds. Famously-intelligent. Related to the Jack Russell Terrier (not an AKC breed, I guess).
Parson Russell Terrier: Another Russell breed.
Sealyham Terrier: Otter-hunters with cone-shaped facial fur.
Teddy Roosevelt Terrier: Another ratter. It's thought Teddy Roosevelt owned some.
Miniature Schnauzer: The smallest Shnauzer, famous for its bearded face.

Image

Basenji: Another ancient breed (they show up on Ancient Egyptian pottery), the "barkless dog" of Africa. The earliest domesticated dogs are thought to look like Basenji. Great vertical leaps.
Beagle: Extremely old breed probably meant to hunt rabbit. A very "generic" dog breed.
Sussex Spaniel: Small size and long coat made it ideal for hunting birds in undergrowth.
Peruvian Inca Orchid: Descended from hairless Incan companion dogs, interbreeding with European ones, but largely only survived from 8 surviving specimens.

Image

Dachshund: Despite being famously silly-looking, these were meant to run into burrows and kill BADGERS.

-Pretty much identical to the Ratters, these are meant for herding. Typically they are smaller versions of larger dogs, or meant to herd cattle- "to heel" means to nip at the heels of a cow to drive it forward. Their small size means they are more easily able to avoid being kicked in return.

Herding Dogs:
* The following dogs will use the same build.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi: Tiny herders meant to nip at the heels of cattle.
Miniature American Shepherd: Compact version of the Australian Shepherd.
Pyrenean Shepherd: Worked with the Great Pyrenees to shepherd the flocks.
Swedish Vallhund: An old mix of Viking spitz and English corgi.
Lancashire Heeler: Tiny dogs meant as cattle herders, but developed into ratters and companions.
Mudi: Old Hungarian herder.

Re: Jab's Animal Builds (Dog Builds!)

So what I figured I would do with this set was posting one build per day, spread across a wider spectrum than last time. When I statted Dogs five years ago, I included only 5 types, then a "Fighting Dog" build. This time I went through the entire American Kennel Club set, because I'm insane, lol.

I'll thus throw in a lot of "similar to-" builds that I lacked last time around, even though I got pretty much every mainstream animal possible last time. I just didn't want to do ONLY re-posts.

Tactics: Surround and bring down in groups, tripping prey.

-Bulldogs are one of the silliest-looking dog breeds, but still pretty handy in a scrap, given their famous tenacity when holding on to something. They will. not. let. go. Their build is largely based around being weak normally, but having a relatively-strong bite for their size that is really hard to break, given the creature's tiny, but robust size. Bulldogs are rather notable for rapid specification of the breed- older paintings of Bulldogs show a much healthier, balanced animal than the modern ungainly, huge-headed breed. Bulldogs were bred for "Bull-Baiting", a particularly cruel sport that would see various dogs attempting to pin a bull to the ground- this would typically result in the deaths of numerous animals. The current Bulldog could not manage this- they were interbred with Pugs to grow shorter, funnier-looking muzzles. Many dogs with this type of head shape are incapable of breeding properly- I've seen documentaries on someone having her expensive Dogue du Bourdeax being put under and C-sectioned in order to produce a litter of puppies.

-Golden Retrievers are about as "generic" a dog breed as you can get. Their size, speed, strength and even appearance are kind of a medium score between all the weird dog breeds in the world. Their intelligence and physicality make them among the most popular breeds on Earth as well, so there's certainly plenty of them- they and the similar Labrador Retreiver (based off of Canadian water dogs), are the most popular breeds in America.

-This PL 1 combat, PL 2 save-based animal isn't really worth being a PC hero's sidekick or anything, but they're perfectly acceptable pets. Similar stats work equally well for breeds like the Labrador.
