Advantages:
Close Attack 4, Improved Initiative

Powers:
"Animal Senses" Senses 2 (Extended Scent, Acute Scent) [2]

Initiative -2

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +5 (DC 15), Toughness -5, Fortitude +0, Will +0

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Nautilus cannot speak to humans, nor use their fins or tentacles to easily manipulate objects.
Disabled (Aquatic)- Nautilus typically will not last long on land- they are borderline immobile, can't defend themselves, and will slowly dehydrate or suffocate.
Disabled (Pinhole Vision)- Nautilus do not have highly developed eyes- with no lenses, they can't make out much detail.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, these molluscs are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on these fish effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -36 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 30 / Defenses: 7 (14)

Era: Modern Day
Range: All waters of the Earth.
Stereotypes: Emotionless, blank creatures.
Colouring: Multiple colors (typically red/white)
Size: Up to 10 inches long (less than a pound)
Encounter Groups: Small numbers.
Diet: Small crustaceans.
Tactics: Float slowly and pull prey off of rocks.

-Nautilus are truly ancient molluscs with a distinctive appearance- numerous small tentacles poking out of a spiral shell. They have tiny beaks used to pull small crustaceans off of rocks they're clinging to and eat them.

Ammonites

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

See, now the name will forever be associated with Saoirse Ronan riding Kate Winslet’s face. Oh, art films.

AMMONITES:
-Little is known of what Ammonites were like in life, but they are believed to have been free-swimming creatures more closely related to octopi & squids than the Nautilus that they resemble. The soft parts of their bodies do not fossilize well (they were completely unknown until *2021*!), but we've seen large curved shell fossils for years- these are so common they were known in ancient times- their name comes from Pliny the Elder calling them "Horns of Ammon" (for the Egyptian deity with curved horns), and medieval Europeans called the stone remains "snakestones", believing them to be petrified serpents.

It's likely that any Ammonites in life would be Toughness +2-3 at least, at the larger sizes (2-3 feet across).

Cephalopods

Post by Jabroniville »

CEPHALOPODS:
-The rest of the molluscs are the famous cephalopods- Octopus, Squid & Cuttlefish. Many-tentacled predatory creatures who are nonetheless soft and delicate, and easy prey for any sea creature their size or bigger. But possessing some of the highest intelligence of animals, despite their short lifespans.

Stereotypes: Mischievous handsy types.
Colouring: Rusty & white.
Size: Less than 10 inches long (less than a pound)
Encounter Groups: Solitary.
Diet: Tiny molluscs, crabs, fish.
Tactics: Lure in or fend off prey with a mimicked shape; attack with tentacles and beak.

-The incredible Mimic Octopus is one of nature's best fakers, having learned how to appropriate the image and behavior of various animals both as a means of defense (copying a sea snake or something), or a lure.

From Wikipedia: "Mimic octopuses have been observed mimicking numerous different species of animals, some animals being mimicked more often than others. Among the animals mimicked are lion fish (the octopus holds its arms out radially to mimic the fish's spines), sea snake (hiding 6 of its arms, it holds the remaining 2 parallel to each other),[7] jellyfish (by inflating its mantle and trailing its arms behind it), and zebra sole (holding all 8 arms behind it as it uses its siphon to swim). The octopus' mimicry of flatfish may be its preferred guise; in a period of 5 days nearly 500 instances of flatfish mimicry were seen. Not only does the mimic octopus use its ability to defend from predators, it also uses aggressive mimicry to approach wary prey, for example mimicking a crab as an apparent mate, only to devour its deceived suitor."

-The Blue-Ringed Octopus is most famous for having an incredibly deadly venom- a paralytic agent that can kill 26 grown men. They typically give ample warning before biting- the creature is notably bright yellow with flashing bright blue rings when startled- and it's so small that victims frequently don't even realize they've been bitten. Victims tend to die by suffocation as their diaphragm stops contracting- people kept on a ventilator typically make a full recovery. Their are four known species in the "Hapalochlaena" group, including animals of varying small sizes, and even a Blue-Lined Octopus.

-Blue-Ringed Octopi are essentially the same as others, being around 8 inches with the body, but becomes PL 6 with their powerful venom.

Man, those videos showing octopi getting of jars from the inside and seeming to appear out of nowhere with their camouflage gave me a whole new respect for them. They are amazing.

The blue ringed was also used in the bond film octopussy

Ocotopi are SOOOOO freaking cool. theyre incredibly intelligent amazing problem solvers. theres of course rhe famous tests where they are locked in jars and get out and where they put a crab or similar food in a jar and the ocotpus figures out how to crack the lid and slip in for a snack

and of course the famous aquarium story where the keepers started finding they were short in their crab counts. they were unable to figure out what was happening until someone got the bright idea to put cameras up. they caught the perpetrator that night. one of the octopi figured out how to escape his enclosure tank slip and slide his way across the hall to the crabs get inside eat one and then make his way back to his enclosure with no one the wiser

like i said amazing creatures made even more so because theres no anecdotal evidence that the octopus and similar animals share NO DNA in common with any currently known terrestrial species. which means barring future discoveries we have our veru own aliens right here on earth
Dr. Silverback has wryly observed that this is like trying to teach lolcats about Shakespeare

-Smaller than the Pacific Octopus, these can be any type of "small enough to not be a threat" type. The Caribbean Reef Octopus, for example, has a mantle about 60 cm long (about the size of a small/medium dog), but weighs less than 4 lbs. They still cost a lot of points thanks to the tons of abilities Octopi have.

-Octopi are pretty sweet, and this is the largest of the species, a powerhouse roughly as strong as a human, with an incredible grip, eight limbs, a sharp beak, undersea adaptations, and several other odd effects.

-Despite not being major threats to people, it's quite weird how many authentic super-powers these guys have: Extra Limbs (almost gave it eight before I realized that 4 was the default for all creatures), partial Insubstantial (they can get through tiny areas, but not like an actual liquid), Colour Change and an Ink Jet (both Concealment, but one allowing an Attack Cloud), taste via tentacles, a Direction Sense (they always know which way is up), etc. I even left in a Feature for their ability to separate a limb and have it kinda move around as a distraction- it's really only worth 1 point, AND they can regrow lost limbs (effectively Regeneration's old "Regrowth" Feat added as a Feature instead). They've got a helluva reach for a -2 Size Rank creature, and are half-decent at fighting, being PL 4.5. Not super-elite, but dangerous enough for humans. And Grappling? It's got a HUGE bonus thanks to it's Advantages & Limbs- much more than a small guy like this would normally have.

-Literally the "Vampire Squid From Hell" in Latin, the Vampire Squid was discovered in 1903, and is one of the most deep-living creatures on Earth, surviving in the Oxygen Minimum Zone with only 3% oxygen. Almost no other complex organism can live down there, and so they have adapted numerous specialties such as low-oxygen usage, weak bodies, ammonia in the blood, and more. It has eight arms covered in fleshy spines (and two tiny "feeder filaments", making them unique among Squids), and survives on "detritus", gelatinous matter, jellyfish and other squids, much of which falls into this deepwater layer when animals die above it. Barely six inches long in the body, it has 1-inch eyes- the largest proportionately in the animal kingdom. They have been preyed upon by predatory fish from deep layers, such as the Giant Grenadiers, as well as Sea Lions (showing they sometimes rise to the surface).

-Vampire Squids are tiny and no match for humans, but have disorienting photophores covering their entire body, shooting out flashes of light. Unlike other squids, they do not project ink, but can instead spray a bioluminous mucus on predators, which can either dazzle them, or make them vulnerable to their own predators. Living in such a low-oxygen environment, they have adapted to be slow-moving and thus have more innovative anti-predator mechanics than speed or stealth (both would cost too much energy at these depths).

-Cuttlefish are among the strangest of all cephalopods, with extreme camouflage capabilities. They are also buoyant thanks to a "cuttlebone" in the middle of their bodies, which takes in gases. Cuttlefish have three hearts (one for each set of gills then another to pump blood around the body). Their life span is typically 1-2 years, and over 120 species are recognized in all.

-Cuttlefish are essentially like other cephalopods, albeit with much faster camouflage abilities- this is not really that stattable unless you go with a weirdly limited Quickness. Most are 2-10 lbs. in weight.

-These are as shrimpy as some molluscs get- most squids are about this size, making up a big chunk of the diet of small fish. The Bobtail Squids are closely related to Cuttlefish. The Spirula is about 4 cm long and is the only living species of the "Spirulidae" order.
