-Sea Turtles have evolved to have flippers instead of legs, making them fully-aquatic, coming on land only to lay their eggs. Extremely large, they are oval-shaped and most have hard shells, unlike large freshwater turtles, which mostly have leathery shells. They are carnivorous when young (often eating jellyfish and other invertebrates), but tend towards eating sea grasses and the like when fully-grown. Most are incredibly rare. Green Sea Turtles, which live worldwide in nearly every ocean & sea, weigh 150-400 lbs. most of the time, but exceptional specimens can clear 600-900 lbs.! The Loggerhead Sea Turtle has similar dimensions and huge peaks. Flatback Sea Turtles are 150-200 lbs.

-Statistically, these are no different from Softshell Turtles save for higher durability.

Tactics: Casually swim up and gobble down.

-Leatherback Turtles are Critically-Endangered, massive turtles (weighing up to 1,770 lbs.), known for their worldwide travels- individuals have been recorded crossing the Atlantic. They eat mainly jellyfish, and can dive thousands of feet below the sea's surface. They are named for their distinctive thick-skinned carapaces, lacking the scutes of most other turtles- though most large aquatic turtles are soft-shelled, none come close to this size. Unlike most other reptiles, they are endothermic, able to maintain high body temperatures on their own.

-Their Shark-deflecting durability makes them PL 6, but they aren't major combatants. Most other Aquatic Turtles are merely lesser variations of this build- the Green Turtle being one of the more well-known (about half the size). Smaller ones that people would recognize in their local streams would likely be only Toughness +2.

-Archelon is the famous giant Turtle in ancient history- pretty much the only one people could name (though there was a slightly-larger one with a more boring name). They were massive animals with prominent beaks, and likely fed on crustaceans.

Re: Jab's Animal Builds (Sea Turtles! Leatherback Turtle! Archelon!)

Post by Jabroniville »

And now with Turtles down, comes the Order Squamata- Lizards, Snakes & Amphisbaenia! This one will have issues similar to the rodents, as there are thousands and thousands of critters here, most of which have the same (or very similar) build. So I spent a long week separating all the damn lizards out for the first batch, and I might have to go family by family through the snakes, who have one hell of a big group, too. So expect a lot of variations of "tiny animal that's no threat to anyone".

Lizards

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

LIZARDS:
-A huge suborder in the "Squamata" order of Reptilia (which includes the Snakes), Lizards contain over 6,000 species across every part of the world but Antarctica. Most lizards are small and quadrupedal, and thus will have very similar stats throughout, but some have among the strangest adaptations ever for terrestrial creatures with backbones- wall-crawling, shooting blood out their eyes, gliding, color-changing, extendable tongues, and regenerating limbs, etc. Most are carnivorous.

The enormous Mosasaurs are actually believed to be lizards that evolved to have flippers and grow to incredible sizes, but most today are tiny. The 3-meter Komodo Dragon is by far the largest one left remaining, and is the only one that's a major danger to humans.

-A great number of lizards in various families can fit this general build, as they don't differ much lifestyle-wise, even if they are distantly related. True Lizards, also called Wall Lizards, make up 300 species across 39 genera, and are the most numerous type of lizard by far. They are the "Generic" lizard, so to speak, having the fewest strange abilities. I left in "Wall-Crawling" since that's what gives the family its name- the ability to climb vertical surfaces like rock faces and walls. Lizards of the Cordylidae family are very small and live in a variety of habits. They include the Orobouros-like Girdled Lizards, the Flat Lizards, and the Grass Lizards, who are limbless, resembling snakes (that ends up being a separate build). Agamas adapt well to human habitats. The Earless Lizards are two genera of ones living mostly in the United States, with tiny ear-openings so as to avoid getting sand from their semi-arid habitats into their ear canals. Closely related are the Tree Lizards.

-Spectacled Lizards contain 250 species, and are named for their transparent eyelids, allowing them to see even with their eyes closed. Collared Lizards are named for the stripes around their necks, and the related Leopard Lizards for their spots. Wood Lizards & Clubtails somewhat resemble chameleons or iguanas (to whom they are related). The Alligator Lizards, named for their superficial resemblance to tiny alligators, share this size, but are part of the family that includes the legless Slowworms & Glass Lizards. Small Tegus are this size as well, though larger Tegus and Whiptails will receive separate builds. Madagascaran Iguanas are also this size, as are the 29 Curlytail Lizards and 20 Microlophus species, including Lava Lizards & Pacific Iguanas.

-Also here are the Agamas, who number in the hundreds of species, almost all of whom are tiny. The Horned Dragons are part of this group- they make popular pets as they're small, easy to feed and look cool. Also there is the tiny Frilled Lizard, iconic for its huge frill and goofy-ass way of running that used to make me laugh my ASS off every time I saw it on nature documentaries as a kid. Finally, we have Anoles- a vast group that covers the Americas and some Pacific Islands- these are more slender, quick-moving ones that can slough off their tails- most can also change color over the course of several minutes- this typically is just a display thing.

-Finally, we have the Skinks. Literally numbering over 1,500 different species, they are perhaps the most diverse group of reptiles in the world, but are typically the same kind of thing- a tiny, short-legged lizard with a long tail and a short, blunt head. A few are kinda big but the vast majority are this size.

-Many Lizards are designed to live in desert habitats- most arer very small. Many are literally called "Desert Lizards", such as those in the True Lizard family. Night Lizards, related to them, are similar, and were thought to be nocturnal- a few have been found to be diurnal. The Side-Blotched & Spiny Lizards of the Iguanid group are like this as well, as are the Uromastyx types of Agamids.

-The extremely-distinctive Thorny Devils are Australian weirdos, able to avoid predators through a spiky exterior, statted out here somewhat like porcupine quills- an affliction that most predators under a certain size would prefer to avoid. They're otherwise like other tiny lizards. Its species name, horridus, is no doubt where Erik Larsen got the name for the member of Freak Force who looks pretty much exactly like these.

-Like Flying Squirrels, some reptiles have gained the ability to fly. Well, glide- these animals have extended ribcages that fan out with webbing between the "ribs", allowing them to glide between trees. They are Agamids, and like most of those, they are extremely tiny.

Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, small Lizards are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on a Lizard of this scale effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Diet: Insects.
Tactics: Flee rapidly, or attempt to swallow whole.

-Geckos are distinctive, bug-eyed predatory lizards, adept at climbing on walls- they are by far the most famous reptile for this ability, with sticking feet that appear nearly supernatural- their toes have around 14,000 tiny hairlike "setae" per square millimetre that can individually grasp and peel off of surfaces. An average Gecko's setae would support a weight of 293 lbs., much less their own body! They are also the most notable lizard for "autotomy"- the process of separating one's tail as a reflex to having it grabbed- this will often distract predatory animals, who see a large thrashing object, allowing the Gecko to escape. This is a high-cost trick and takes a VERY long time to regenerate, so it's not quite that useful, but it's a thing.

-There are over 1,850 species of Gecko worldwide, making them extremely varied. Most are very small, however- the tiniest is only a couple of inches long! The Dwarf Gecko is in fact the world's smallest lizard, while the Giant Gecko is the biggest of the geckos, at New Caledonian Giant Gecko, is up to 14 inches long, and an example of island gigantism, growing up in a remote Pacific Island location.

-Geckos are similar to other small lizards, but are much more focused on wall-crawling, and can all regenerate their tails (some other lizards can do this, but it's a bit tough to research exactly which species can).

-Most Whiptails are extremely tiny, but are lightning-quick- not many tiny animals can hit 29 mph. This gives many of them the name "Racerunner". One third of Whiptails have the rare ability of partheogenesis- they can reproduce asexually, as the entire species is female!

-Horned Lizards are standard-issue desert creatures, but have a ridiculously-distinctive ability- they can shoot THEIR OWN BLOOD at predators, via altering blood pressure and deliberately rupturing blood vessels in their eyes to squirt it at enemies. This tastes incredibly foul to dogs and cats and will prevent them from further the attack, but birds appear unaffected. There are 20-ish species of Horned Lizards, but not all of them can do the blood trick. This pushes them up to PL 4, but only with that one trick.

-A handful of Wall Lizards are decently big- the Occelated Lizard is about a pound, for instance. Still nothing to write home about, but slightly more durable than the "step on them and they die" tiny ones. Immature specimens of larger species can fit this tier as well, plus a handful of Tegus and the smaller kinds of Iguanas, including Spinytail Iguanas. Related to the Iguanas are the 2-3-lb. Chuckwallas of the Western U.S. The Plated Lizards are a family of stout, 2-foot lizards. Tuataras, hailing from New Zealand, are a "living fossil" type from a rare lineage, and reach about the same weight. Some of the Skinks are this size, including the Blue-Tongued Skinks.

Well, Jab, I'll give you this. You efforts have given a plethora of ideas for anyone making a character that has shapeshifting, animal summoning, and/or animal mimicry powers. Well done, most appreciated, and quite educational. Thank you.
