Total: Abilities: -6 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 29 / Defenses: 12 (55)

Era: Modern
Range: All land masses but Antarctica
Stereotypes: Speedy. Voiceless predators.
Colouring: Brown & white.
Size: Up to 20 inches long (5 ounces to 4 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Medium-sized birds (especially pigeons).
Tactics: Chase at high-speeds and disable, or dive-bomb from a "stoop".

-The smallest Hawks are no bigger than Falcons, and often smaller. These animals are specialists in hunting other kinds of birds- typically small songbirds like Sparrows, but many can take Pigeons, Guineafowl, Gamebirds and even Herons! Prey is usually killed on impact, while fighters will be brought down by "kneading" with the talons.

-Though delicately built, Hawks are PL 3-4, being capable chasers and can capture fast-moving, spritely prey. Their big issue is causing damage- DC 14 is not that tough to surpass, and even chickens & such can manage to tank a hit or two.

Types of Small Hawks:
* Most of these are part of the same family- "Atricipinae"- a part of the "Accipiter" group.

GOSHAWKS: It includes the Sharp-Shinned Hawk, Grey Goshawk, Northern Goshawk, and more. The Northern Goshawk covers much of the Northern Hemisphere and is quite large (about 4 lbs. at maximum), preying almost entirely on regular pigeons.
COOPER'S HAWK: A very common North American hawk- usually 5 ounces to 1.8 lbs.
TINY HAWK: A South American species- the male is only 8 inches long, about the size of a Starling.

Image

SPARROWHAWKS: Another type of bird-hunting hawk- widespread and successful, with long legs to prevent flapping and biting prey from counterattacking.
SHIKRA: Common in Asia, especially India, where it was a popular falconry bird.

Image

GRAY HAWK: A small Mexican hawk that mostly preys on lizards & small mammals. Part of the "Buteo" group. About one pound on average.

Image

HARRIERS: Harriers are small hawks known to "harry", or chase prey while flying low to the ground. This has given the name to the Harriet Jet as well. Hen Harriers in Europe focused on gamebirds, while the Northern Harrier of the Americas focuses on rodents. Swamp Harriers hail from the Pacific Islands and Swamp Harriers specialize in African & Eurasian habitats.
LONG-TAILED HAWK: African species with a long barred tail.
CUCKOO-HAWKS: A pair of African hawks, brown & white in color.

Image

WHITE HAWK: A very striking white & black bird from South America. Generally less than 2 lbs.

-Large hawks are only a tiny bit bigger than the last ones, but even at this size, that can be a big difference. Much of this family is from the "Buteo" group, including Buzzards (a general name for most Old World hawks, really), and a couple of North American hawks (including the most famous and common of them). Most of these are also bird-killers, but will aim for things larger than sparrows & starlings, and a variety of prey is also readily taken from rodents & lizards to rabbits. They're a notch tougher and more damaging than the smaller Hawks, and are still talon-based hunters.

Types of Large Hawks:
* Varying sizes, typically between 2-8 lbs.

RED-TAILED HAWK: The most famous and widespread Hawk in North America- the Red-Tailed Hawk is known for its characteristic "KEE-ARRRRRRRRRRR!" call, so iconic to birds of prey that it's been used in movies to represent ALL birds of prey, in particular eagles. They typically weigh 1-3 lbs.
FERRUGINOUS HAWK: The largest Hawk of the Americas, being 2-5 lbs. Typically hunts rodents (especially Prairie Dogs), and is often mistaken for an Eagle due to its size.

Image

BLACK HAWKS: Common & Greater Black Hawks, both yellow-legged black hawks of the Americas. About 2-3 lbs.
BUZZARDS: A spread-out group through much of Eurasia. The Common Buzzard is well-studied in Europe, for example. They also include the Jackal, Madagascar, Mountain & xxx Buzzards, among others. Typically 1-3 lbs.

Eagles

Post by Jabroniville »

EAGLES:
-The second-largest Birds of Prey after the Vultures, the Eagles are the nastiest of the hunting birds, and are closely related to Hawks & Falcons. Like Hawks, they typically dispatch prey using huge taloned feet, slicing off flesh with their sharpened beaks. Eagles exist nearly worldwide, but are mostly from Eurasia & Africa- there are 2 in North America, 9 in Central and South America, and 3 in Australia. 60 Species all in all. Their huge size means they will take larger prey than Hawks will, due to necessity as much as anything, since they need more food to function. They vary in weight from 1 lb. to 18 lbs. Their eyes are famously powerful, with Martial Eagles having up to 8 times the visual acuity of humans.

Eagles are truly mighty predators- the largest prey ever seen being carried off was a 15 lb. deer fawn, but prey as large as 90 lbs. has been taken down. Eagles have ferociously-powerful talons and are a tremendous threat, though will not usually mess with extremely large creatures. Many are specialized, hunting fish, snakes or other animals. As the largest predatory birds, Eagles have always been afforded great respect- more than any other bird. The Hindu god Garuda is Eagle-like, the U.S.A. obviously features the Bald Eagle as their signature animal, while Romans also identified strongly with them- militaristic cultures in particular adored them.

"Hawk-Eagles" are from various genuses, but are usually similar in appearance- they typically less bulky than others, being fairly slender, with narrower beaks.

-The smallest of the Eagles are smaller than even tiny hawks. Wallace's Hawk-Eagle of Borneo & the Little Eagle of Australia weigh less than 2 lbs.! The Pygmy Eagle of Papua New Guinea weighs less than 1 lb. Humorously, the Little Eagle is the closest living relative of the extinct mighty Haast's Eagle. Wahlberg's Eagle is a tawny African species.

-The vast majority of Eagles are on this tier- mostly between 3-10 lbs. South America has the Solitary Eagle, Chaco Eagle, Black Eagle, Black & Chestnut Eagle, Ornate Hawk-Eagle, Black & White Hawk-Eagle. The Crested Eagle is a 2-8 lb. monkey-hunter. Bonelli's Eagles live in a patchy strip from the Iberian Peninsula to Korea, sporting massive feet and long legs. The Spanish Imperial Eagle is restricted to a fairly small area there. African Hawk-Eagles mostly take birds like guineafowl. The Changeable Hawk-Eagle of Asia (3-4 lbs.) is named because it often has various color morphs (light or dark). Papuan Eagles often hunt tree-kangaroos but are opportunistic.

-The largest eagle in Australia is the Wedge-Tailed Eagle. Africa has the Tawny Eagle, Long-Crestead Eagle, Booted Eagle, Cassin's Hawk-Eagle & Ayres's Hawk-Eagle (a dove-hunter). Asia has the Black Eagle, Blyth's Hawk-Eagle, Mountain Hawk-Eagle, Pinsker's Hawk-Eagle, Javan Hawk-Eagle, Sulawesi Hawk-Eagle, Philippine Hawk-Eagle, Rufous-Bellied Eagle, Greater Spotted Eagle, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Indian Spotted Eagle, Gurney's Eagle & Eastern Imperial Eagle. The ground squirrel-hunting Steppe Eagle moves between Asia & Africa, and is also this size.

-Being around the same size as large hawks, medium-sized Eagles are nonetheless a bit more powerful, sporting larger talons and beaks- they will typically hunt smaller animals still, likely targetting rodents, rabbits and mid-sized birds. They are PL 4 defensively, PL 4.5 offensively- accurate fighters, but still a bit vulnerable.

Stereotypes: Regal & proud.
Colouring: Dark brown & tawny

Tactics: Dive-bomb from above, possibly dragging off cliffs!

-Golden Eagles are frickin' sweet. Not like those lame BALD Eagles (sorry Americans, but the Beaver is a way cooler national symbol :P), who just eat dead fish and other carrion all the time, and just stealing other birds' kills. Golden Eagles? They take stuff the size of human children (and probably COULD take them if they wanted to), and are even used in WOLF HUNTS, running down even apex predators in other animal Orders! And really- how majestic can you get? Giant, super-noble predators with the most dignified expression in history. Suck it, Bald Eagle: the Golden Eagle has it all over you.

-Golden Eagles are very large raptors, going from 6-17 lbs. in exceptional specimens, and are much larger than most other birds of prey in their regions, which extend almost all the way across the Northern hemisphere. This makes them one of the most-studied birds in the world, and the most common "national animal" on Earth, considered such by five nations, including Germany & Mexico (where it's also on their nation's flag, attacking a snake). They are somewhat popular in falconry for their agility and intelligence, but typically smaller birds are chosen due to the aggressive Eagles being easily capable of injuring their trainers. Typical prey weighs between 3-8 lbs., with 30% of prey being rabbits & hares, but they can take plenty of larger animals if necessary.

-Speaking of elite hunting tactics- check THIS crap out!:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VklTs-Tid_I&feature=fvst. Yes, it's literally grabbing the goats, and then THROWING THEM OFF A CLIFF, to eat the flattened creature at the bottom. That is NASTY. Though I can't find any record of fatalities on behalf of Golden Eagles, that is not for lack of trying.

-At PL 5, this is equal to the Wolf, and a notch higher than most mountain-dwelling herbivores, though its small size means it usually hunts the babies or little ones (like Goats), not Bighorn Sheep. It's about 14 lbs., but you could take out a normal-size human with this Elite, boosted-accuracy version (for an even MORE elite Sidekick version, you can knock up its accuracy to +10 or 11, making it a PL 6-7 creature, which is a bit beyond the natural type).

-Famous as the symbol of the United States, the amazing-looking, majestic Bald Eagle is actually a seabird primarily feeding on fish and carrion, but nonetheless inspires awe. They live throughout North America, and are still one of the largest raptors in the world. They are a little larger than Golden Eagles (about a pound heavier on average) and reside in the largest nests in the animal kingdom- up to 13 feet across and weighing over one ton! Though they rarely take prey as large as Golden Eagles do, when the two scrap it's pretty equal- they're just as aggressive and fight-y. So statistically they're pretty close.

-Bald Eagles come from a fairly large family of fish-eating eagles separated between Fish Eagles & Sea Eagles. All of them are known for tiny hook-like structures on their feet that enable them to properly grip fish, preventing their prey from slipping out. Pallas's Fish Eagle lives throughout most of Asia, and the Grey-Headed Fish Eagle is more to the east, while the Lesser Fish Eagle lives in India. There are also the African & Madagascar Fish Eagles. Sanford's Sea Eagle lives in the Solomon Islands to the northeast of Australia, where it is the only large predator- its prey includes molluscs and sea snakes. Close by is the White-Bellied Sea Eagle, living around Australia.

-Fish & Sea Eagles are typically around the size of Medium-Sized Eagles- 3-10 lbs. or so. They simply throw on a pair of Advantages- Favored Foe & Environment, to emphasize their eating habits.

-Only a bit larger than the medium-sized ones, these tend to go from 5-15 lbs., but some are even bigger. The Crowned Eagle of Africa hunts small ungulates typically, but has taken some of the largest prey ever recorded among raptors- 66 lb. Bushbucks! Typically it will eat smaller ones like Duikers, as well as Rock Hyraxes and things like that. They are among the few eagles confirmed to have attacked humans in possible preying manner, targetting children. Large female Malagasy Crowned Eagles can hit 15 lbs., as can Verreaux's Eagles, a dark-colored bird. Martial Eagles are among the most lethal, frequently targetting even other predators, suck as jackals, mongooses & wildcats. Even a human child was once killed! The Eurasian White-Tailed Eagle is another rival for the largest in the world, as is the critically-endangered Philippine Eagle.

-Steller's Sea Eagle, located in East Asia, is on average the world's heaviest eagle, weighing between 11-20 lbs. They will prey on just about anything they can catch- not just fish (which they can grip easily, and steal from other animals), but mink, sable and foxes of any kind. Similarly huge is the Wedge-Tailed Eagle, which lives over much of northern Eurasia. Both are about equivalent to the Bald Eagle.

-A good chunk of birds of prey are actually Snake Eagles, which can take even venomous snakes. Though snakes are dangerous prey with an ingenious form of locomotion, Eagles are actually their Achilles heel- the birds strike from above, often stealthily, which removes many of the snakes' biggest advantages- they cannot bite effectively from that direction, and their thermal imaging is ineffective against a predator coming from so high up. The birds will launch themselves straight down onto the snake's head, preventing a return bite.

-Snake Eagles are generally medium-sized (3-6 lb.) eagles specializing in serpentine prey, even taking venomous snakes! They include the Black-Chested, Brown, Southern Banded, Western Banded and Short-Toed Snake Eagles, as well as the striking red-faced Bateleur. Then there's the Sulawesi, Mountain, Philippine, Adaman, Madagascar, Great Nicobar, Crested and Congo Serpent Eagles, from a different genus in the same subfamily.

-Named for the mythological harpies, the massive Harpy Eagle is South America's largest bird of prey. Hilariously, 79% of its diet is made up of sloths- half of each type. The slow bastards are considered to be poor eating, but I guess these jumbo birds make it work, as they'd have little trouble dispatching one. Other regular prey include monkeys, generally above Tamarins in scale and going as high as 20-30 lb. Howler Monkeys.
