I never watched that show, lol.

Yeah, it may have been hiding somewhere. But I have not seen it since!

But earlier this Summer, I had a visit by Mantis.

Era: Modern
Range: Fantasy Realms
Stereotypes: Mindless Followers.
Colouring: Black, red, orange
Size: Up to 10 feet long (600-1,000 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Huge armies of 20-300 individuals.
Diet: Vegetation, flesh.
Tactics: Mass suicidal charges of dozens of fighters, weighing and wearing down opponents.

-Ants are among the most industrious, impressive animals on the planet. From the same order that gives us Wasps & Bees, Ants are known for their super-skinny thoraxes, big pincers, and their huge number-based attacks. They can also lift prodigious amounts of weight, making them among the most fearsome animals in all creation compared to their size. Army Ants have a famous ability to link arms and form "bridges" over things, and Fire Ants possess nasty, noxious irritants that burn. Their PL isn't overly-horrifying (they're on the level with Horses, Stags and other medium-sized herbivores), but keep in mind that if you fight only one of them, your GM isn't doing his job. These things are meant to be fought in HUGE hordes, their never-ending jaws and exoskeletons overwhelming the foe by sheer numbers. Ants can climb walls at high speeds, see around them, use the Earth's Magnetic Field for direction, follow the Pheromone trails left by other ants (call it a "Feature"- it's just easier). Oh, and they have Power-Lifting, a rare feat amongst animals.

Here's some notable variants on the "Common" Giant Ant above:
Jack Jumper Ant: PL 6 (79): Leaping 2 (30 feet) [2], "Irritating Bite" Affliction 5 (Fort; Impaired/Disabled/Incapacitated) (Extras: Cumulative) [10] -- (12 points)
Fire Ant: PL 6 (79): "Irritating Bite" Affliction 6 (Fort; Impaired/Disabled/Incapacitated) (Extras: Cumulative) [12] -- (12 points)
Carpenter Ant: PL 6 (69): "Eating Wood" Weaken Toughness 4 (Flaws: Limited to Objects) [2] -- (2 points)
Bullet Ant: PL 7 (95): "Highest-Pain Sting" Affliction 7 (Fort; Impaired/Disabled/Paralyzed) (Extras: Cumulative, Progressive +2) [28] -- (28 points)

-Jack Jumper Ants can leap, but are pretty weak. Fire Ants use Formic Acid to produce painful bites that may prove totally-disabling in high-enough amounts, moreso than Jack Jumpers. Carpenter Ants are specialists at forming nests out of objects such as wood, and their Giant Versions here are even better at it. Bullet Ants in real life possess the single-highest pain-rating of all insect bites (seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schmidt_Sting_Pain_Index), producing the equivalent of "walking across hot coals with a 3-inch nail imbedded in your foot", and it lasts all day, making it easily the most-expensive and dangerous ant.
For some old school fun, I recommend everyone check out the black and white sci-fi film THEM!, which does a great job of portraying a giant ant menace. And unlike later films of the era, it wasn't schlock, it played the concept and all its horror completely straight and was very well done.

Army ants are the ones that fascinate me you have these literal walking carpets that can strip an area if they want to through sheer numbers

they showed up as a hazard in kingdom of the crystal skull dragging a russian to his death and making ladders of themselves

also as someone whose lived in the south one of hurrricane and flooding seasons favorite pastimes is finding the MASSDIVE nightmare fuel tha is floating fire ant colonies which are absolutely terrifying
Dr. Silverback has wryly observed that this is like trying to teach lolcats about Shakespeare

-Dragonflies are master predators, known as hunters of mosquitors, but they can easily target any kind of bug. Their four wings can move independently, making them one of the few animals who can fly in any direction. They also have a very difficult, energy-efficient form of hunting, allowing them to predict where a target will end up and meet them there rather than simply rush them down.

-Dragonflies are simple predators, but fast and accurate.

I love Dragonfly!

A few years ago, I saw this big green one that flew up close to me on a walk. It flew up to me and I could see its head/face really well. It reminded me of Annihilus! It's mouth was chewing---or maybe it was talking?

I got out of there! I could just imagine it saying, "I, Annihilus, am back!" :o

-The Meganeura is famously the largest flying insect ever- a huge extinct super-dragonfly (called a "Griffinfly" as they differ anatomically from normal Dragonflies) with a wingspan over two feet long. Insects could only grow to this scale in a time with a different amount of oxygen in the atmosphere.

Arachnids

Post by Jabroniville »

CLASS- ARACHNIDS (Phylum- Arthropoda)
-The Arachnids contain the spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites & harvestmen (daddy longlegs). They all have two body segments and four pairs of legs, along with pedipalps (leglike structures to assist in feeding) and fangs/pincers, and most are terrestrial animals (ticks & mites can be aquatic).

SCORPIONS: Scorpions are the most ancient of arachnids, and are known for their long, stinging tails. Some stingers are used to paralyze prey, but mostly it's for defense. They are separated into two groups- the tiny, skinny Buthids and the large, hefty Scorponids. The Emperor Scorpion and other Scorponids are largely harmless to humans, while the Buthids pack the most virulent venom.

Image

PSEUDOSCORPIONS: These have pincers, but lack stinging tails. The venom is contained in the pedipalps.

Image

SUN-SPIDERS: Looking halfway between scorpions & spiders, these have no venom, and instead kill and chew up prey with their fangs.

HARVESTMEN: Well-known for the Daddy-Long-Legs- a spherical critter with long, spindly legs. The potency of their venom is overstated, and they are no threat to humans, having fangs too small to affect anything large. There are at least 5,000 species.

WHIP-SPIDERS: These 130 species to not sting nor bite.

Image

WHIP-SCORPIONS: Large-mandibled arachnids with tiny, slender tails. They can spit formic acid from their abdomen.

TICKS & MITES: Famous parasites numbering over 30,000 species, and are present in nearly every habitat. Most are less than 1mm long.

-Jaekelopterus is the largest arthropod ever discovered- an 8-foot, flattened aquatic giant with large pincers that was likely the apex predator of its environment. They are typically found flattened in sediment layers, implying that their exoskeleton is very thing to allow such a huge size. As such, they likely weren't very durable and would be outcompeted by larger reptilian or fish predators.

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Spiders cannot speak to humans, nor use their legs to easily manipulate objects.
Reputation (Monsters)- Spiders are considered terrifying to most people- ones this big, especially so.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, Spiders are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on a Rat effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -32 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 35 / Defenses: 4 (21)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Swamps in South America.
Stereotypes: Evil monsters.
Colouring: Black & brown.
Size: Up to 5 inches long (6 ounces)
Encounter Groups: Solitary.
Diet: Insects, earthworms, tiny vertebrates.
Tactics: Leaping onto prey and stabbing to death with large fangs.

-Given one of the more evocative names in nature, the Goliath Birdeater is a 5-inch, 6-ounce predator that can and has killed small vertebrates- among the animals it's slain and eaten include rodents, lizards and even birds (which gave it the name). The venom isn't much more dangerous than a wasp's sting, but the bite is exceptionally painful and used to kill their prey.

-The tricky thing with animals like this is they're terrifying and good predators, but are too small to threaten people and so their stats remain unimpressive.

-There's scary animals, and then there's SCARY ANIMALS. Giant Spiders show up all the time in various media as one of the token "enlarged normal animal" minions (not just Giant Mechanical Spiders, either), but not alot of people really react the way you probably would. A World of Darkness White Wolf book illustrated this quite well (quoting indirectly here- don't have the book): "Look at a spider. Have you ever really taken a close look at it's face? No part of it looks like what a person looks like, which is utterly horrifying. Now imagine that thing the size of a Volkswagen." I'm not particularly arachnophobic (I have smacked Spiders off me with my hands without shuddering, and had one living beside by bed's pillows in the windowsill for months), but holy frickin' bejeezus, I would fill my pants with dung and run screaming to the other end of the continent of a spider that was more than eight feet long showed itself.

-Because of that, I can't imagine a more horrific Minion to throw at the heroes. Lots of various games stat up Monstrous Spiders (including M&M, which has a fairly decent PL 7 version, and D&D, which has various Drow-based ones), but this one here's a nastier monster, a PL 9 nearly-pp-balanced thing that can either be a suitable Riding Monster for a villain you REALLY want to get across as weird, or as a solitary (or worse, GROUP) hunter, lying wait in it's web.

-This Giant Spider is quite dangerous, just below the "standard" starting level for PCs. It's big, strong, tough and has a deadly toxin in it's fangs, and has a Snare (though it can't just fire it out- it's a trail that it leaves behind when it moves, like an actual spider. Only a few Spider species can 'throw' a web, and they have to make a funky little net to do it).

-I always loved Scorpions. Like Spiders, but less creepy to look at, and having this bad-ass, 100% unique appearance. Sprawled-out little legs, giant pincers and a massive arced tail that delivers poison? This thing looks like it was designed by a batch of fifth-graders who decided to add everything they thought was cool onto one creature and drew it on the back of their math homework (I am familiar with this tendency). Emperor Scorpions are easily the coolest-looking of them all, being gigantic glistening black monsters (with a much weaker venom than the tiny ones, oddly enough).

-Scorpions stat up a bit like Spiders, but lose the Snare and gain Extended Reach on a Tail Strike with the Poison. It does more damage and is tougher, but is easier to hit and less accurate, so it balances out the same. It's can't Leap, but is still pretty very fast, and can burrow with greater speed. Altogether not as dangerous as the ambush-king Spiders, but I still wouldn't want to fight it. Centipedes, also horrifying Arthropods, would probably have similar stats if scaled up this big.

MILLIPEDES:
-Multi-legged creatures that are slow-moving and eat decaying leaf matter, millipedes are only distantly related to centipedes. The largest are 14 inches long, but most are very tiny. The most limbs of any creature belongs to one that has 1,306 legs!

AHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA F*CK YOU NATURE.

CENTIPEDES:
-Centipedes are multi-legged, predatory arthropods with a venomous bite, though they are not fatal to humans (aside from those allergic to bee stings and small children). The number of legs varies from 30 to 382- none has exactly 100 legs. Some are quite deadly- centipedes haven been observed hanging upside-down in caves, capturing and rolling up on passing by bats.
