I've only seen a bald eagle in the wild twice in my life (and it was likely the same specimen). It truly is a majestic looking bird.

Sorry, but I'm pretty sure a beaver has never eaten a BALD EAGLE.

I'm not sure what the image was supposed to be but if it involved someone eating beaver, as awesome as beaver-eating is, maybe including pictures isn't the best plan fora family friendly site.

That's weird. The image was there when I first posted. It's just an angry looking eagle. No beaver in sight

-The largest predatory flying bird ever, the Haast's Eagle is an extinct super-predator that frequently hunted animals that are basically fatter Ostriches, so you KNOW they're tough as hell. Seriously, a 30-pound bird that hunts 510-pound birds? That is just plain BAD-ASS, and it means these things are awesome and demand to be statted. There's not a lot to them other than boosting up the strength of a common Eagle, but this makes them much more expensive, and far more dangerous in combat. A PL 7 bird? Yeah, that's pretty horrifying, especially since they can dive-bomb you from the air, do +5 damage (and Power Attack!), and even grapple fairly well for such a small animal. There is a very real chance that these things could have killed and eaten HUMAN CHILDREN.

-Unfortunately, the Haast's Eagle went extinct largely due to human pressures- the Maori people discovered New Zealand, and immediately started hunting the fat, slow, easy-to-kill Moas to extinction within one to two-hundred years' time, leaving the Eagle with no prey to capitalize on. They soon followed them into death. Remember THAT next time someone tries to blame all extinctions on modern society and/or Europeans. Turns out ALL humans are bastards :).

-I always loved these things in the Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manuals, and other media (but the Rescuers Down Under bugged the CRAP out of me, because I was REALLY sure that no Eagle could ever get THAT big- and I was right! They just made up the damn animal!). Golden Eagles are awesome enough, but their ten-foot Fantasy-borne relatives? For this reason, my personal D&D character (who I never got to play, because my group has gaming ADD- not *AD&D*- and always switches games before we get to a high enough level for something cool), a Human Ranger, was always meant to eventually get a cool black version of this as a Special Mount from which to fire arrows & stuff at. I think Giant Eagles are even cooler than Pegasi, Hippogriffs or Gryphons- there's something to be said for a mount just being a big version of a regular animal.

-This version of a Giant Eagle is a PL 8 Mount, basically a scaled-up Eagle/Haast's Eagle, doing tremendous damage for an animal, but not being so elite that it trumps a Rhinoceros or an Elephant. It's still a huge predator, and CAN kill those things if need be, but it'd be a hell of a fight. Most of the Cool Flying D&D Mounts are PL 8-ish, since they're expected to be super-hero sidekicks or something, even though this ends up getting hte short-shrift in stuff like Warhammer, where they're by far the weeniest "special" mount you can have aside from a common Horse (or maybe a Pegasus).

-The biggest bird of all, and one repeatedly brought up in ancient literature as a real creature, was the Roc (sometimes called the Thunderbird). Such a massive, WHALE CATCHING predator of course could obviously never exist based off of what we know about science, flight, biology, evolution, and the general size of predators relative to prey. But it's still pretty honkin' cool to think of a 60-foot bird with a 120-foot wingspan flying in, grabbing a Humpback Whale, and flying off to eat it. Granted, it messes with our concept of a realistic Ecology in a setting, because how in hell do you keep something like THAT fed? Of course, Ecology in a FANTASY SETTING is often rather dumb to even think about, given how everything's magic and completely-outlandish in the FIRST place. Me, I either just invent creatures that are both fast-breeding and huge (thus providing meals for countless Apex Predators), or figure that since these are magical creatures, they naturally don't need to eat much.

-Rocs don't appear much in myth, and not a lot of movies use them, likely do to problems scaling such a thing in shots (Krakens and stuff, you can just show random limbs and the like- a giant bird you'd almost have to show the whole thing). Hard to animate properly when it wouldn't fit in any frame with other characters in it, and WAY too hard to put into live-action stuff. Even so, it's a pretty crazy thing to throw a party's way, even if they're superhumans and can shoot fire and crap, so it's still pretty devastating.

-The Roc stats up as a PL 12 nightmare while fairly short on points, but it's packing the standard "Giant Creature" array of stuff. It's Wings can call up huge storms that push everything away, damage creatures in a massive wing-slap, or just knock everyone down.

Vultures

Post by Jabroniville »

VULTURES:
-Vultures are usually very large birds of prey- all are scavengers, typically sporting bald heads (presumably to avoid getting them filthy with carrion and entrails). Vultures are incredibly important to ecosystems, as they quickly dispose of corpses, thus preventing the spread of disease, as well as keeping dogs and rats from expanding by eating said corpses. A vast chunk of the 19 species are Critically-Endangered in the wild- this seems a bit strange, as scavengers should presumably rarely find themselves with nothing to eat, but drug poisoning is a likely culprit- they are highly-vulnerable to the random drugs used in things like livestock, which will make the birds sick. This is having disastrous effects on various regions, as the aforementioned dogs and rats will eat the carrion instead, and thus spread out in greater numbers. Old World Vultures hunt purely by sight, while New World Vultures (which are not that closely related to the others) hunt by scent.

-These Vultures are incredibly tiny- the smallest is the Palm-Nut Vulture of Africa (3-4 lbs.), which unusually eats a diet of 65% palm nut husks, supplementing the rest with crabs and captured chickens. Hooded Vulture (3-7 lbs.), also of Africa, is about the same size. India has the Red-Headed Vulture (7-12 lbs.) and the Egyptian Vulture (4-6 lbs.) spreads across Eurasia, and is especially hated for its diet consisting of feces.

-These vultures are very small and largely harmless to anything of remotely decent size. They will often eat last at kills- supplanted by larger Vultures in their range, and sometimes even Ravens & Crows.

-The Vultures of the Americas are nearly all rather small, and similar to Small Vultures save that they have extremely good senses of smell (unusual among birds). New World Vultures of this size include the Black Vultures (2-7 lbs.), Turkey Vulture named for its red head and dark coloring (2-6 lbs.), Greater & Lesser Yellow-Headed Vulture (4 lbs.- yes, both are around the same weight). Unlike all other Birds, its sense of smell is PHENOMENAL, and birds like this are used to detect gas leaks (carrion scent is placed into gas mains, so that the birds centre around any leaks they can detect).

-About half the Vultures are around this size. Southeast Asia's White-Rumped Vulture (7-16 lbs.) is critically-endangered. Africa has the Rüppell's Vulture (14-20 lbs.), which is the world's highest-flying bird, capable of soaring at over 11,000 feet, the White-Headed Vulture (8-10 lbs.) and the White-Backed Vulture (9-15 lbs.). The Himalayan Vulture is the largest bird in its region (18-26 lbs.). There's also the Indian Vulture & Slender-Billed Vulture (12-14 lbs.), with overlapping habitats- both are closely-related. The Bearded Vulture of Iran (13 lbs.) is the world's only known vertebrate to live on a diet consisting almost entirely of bone marrow (their digestive systems are powerful enough to easily dissolve bone).

-Medium-Sized Vultures are fairly small and vulnerable, but still have some heft to them.
