-The Trachichthyiformes are a sister group to the Beryciformes, also living on the ocean floor. -The Acanthuriformes are another order of small fish, this one tending towards being oval or disc-shaped with incredibly bright colors- the most famous is probably the Tang (Dory from the Pixar films is a Blue Tang, while Gill is a Moorish Idol). Unusually, they have retractable spines at the rear which they use for defense (fish who bite from behind are jabbed in the mouth). The Unicornfish has a horn right in the front, too. These can grow about a foot long typically, and grow very fast, even in aquariums. More generic-looking relatives include the Rovers & Drums/Drumfish.
Many of these fish are downright scary.

Now, even though this breed isn't, I think I will skip the "Tang" this morning, LOL!

-Jellynoses are named for their bulbous noses, created because their skeletons are made up of mostly cartilage. There are about a dozens species in their order (Ateleopodiformes), most of which live near the sea floor and are poorly understood. Also caled "Tadpole Fish", they are usually quite elongated.

-The Callionymorphes are an order of elongated, perch-like fish that are mostly very tiny sand-feeders. Their name comes from their colorful bodies (meant for camouflage on sea floors) making them look like little dragons. Males are extremely aggressive and form dominance displays that result in numerous deaths during the breeding season, but these mollusc-eaters are incredibly tiny- none are more than a foot long.

-The wild Black Swallower is the representative of the Trachiniformes, known for their ability to swallow creatures up to FOUR AND A HALF TIMES LARGER THAN THEMSELVES, literally catching prey like Snake Mackerels by the tails and "walking" their jaws over them, coiling the creature up in their stomach. They can eat creatures so big that these tiny animals can't digest them before decomposition sets in, which releases gases that forces them to the surface (this is, in fact, how most Swallowers are collected by humans). Relatives include Sandfish, Duckbills and Sandperches, all small, elongated creatures- the latter of which pretty much look and act like generic fish. The Kali are named after the Hindu goddess of destruction.

-Oarfish are honest to god insane and are almost ABSOLUTELY the origin of countless "Sea Serpent" myths, and should be way the hell more famous. I mean, LOOK AT IT- a 36-foot long giant fish with crazy fins and flippers? What would YOU think if you saw one? They're only krill-eating predators, but are cool enough that I wanted to bring them up. These giant, fascinating fish are extremely-unknown, as they live around a thousand feet below the water's surface, where they eat small crustaceans & cephalopods.

-The sheer size of Oarfish means they'd have few predators, and since their organs are rather front-loaded, they could survive the destruction of quite a lot of their tail. They're soon so rarely that the only ones witnessed by people are sick and/or dying creatures.

-The huge, disc-shaped Opah is related to the Oarfish, and is also a big 'un- 660 lbs.! They have long pectoral fins so distinctive I actually recognized these as Oarfish relatives just from a picture, and have a unique adaptation- Opah are endomorphic, and consistently have their entire body at 5 degrees warmer than the surrounding waters. This is unique among fish, who are either entirely cold-blooded or can only warm individual parts of their bodies at once. This allows Opah to be extremely fast predators at incredibly deep depths, where most animals are slow-moving in order to conserve energy. Very little is known about their lifestyle or mating habits, as they're just too deep in the water.

Tactics: Sudden attacks from above or below.

-An extinct fish from the Devonian period, Dunkleosteus possesses a famous face- one of the most distinctive and horrific skulls of all time. I can't even imagine meeting up with this thing... giant dermal plates instead of regular face bones, and those plates are razor-sharp like the worst kind of teeth. Essentially it's a pair of scissors with fins. Like a lot of these giant marine predators, it's got a very high PL, and would be extremely dangerous to any creature in the ocean- they're at least ten feet longer than Great White Sharks, and though they don't have the huge array of teeth, their scissor-like jaws are probably just as deadly.

-Leedsichthys (Leeds' fish) is a monstrous-ass fish, bigger than any we'll ever see. It's probably the largest fish that has ever lived, at least according to modern science. It wasn't a big predator (it ate mostly like baleen whales, paleontologists figure, drifting along eating tiny crustaceans), but seriously- a 53-foot fish? Its sheer mass is enough to give even Liopleurodon pause, and in fact some of these have been found with tail scarring MATCHING a 60-foot super-predator's attack- and the wounds had HEALED, meaning Leedsichthys survived the assault! So despite not being a big hunter, it could probably dish out insane punishment, and is nearly impossible to seriously injure.

-Leedsichthys is so big it hits PL 9.5 stats despite being really slow, as it can easily hit just about anything, and has the beef to tank any number of hits.

Re: Jab's Animal Builds (Dunkleosteus! The Biggest Fish Ever!)

Post by Jabroniville »

And thus FINALLY concludes my builds of the various regular Fish orders! This one got a lot bigger than even I guessed, lol. I started out with a TON, but ended up finding about 7-8 extra Orders during my research. Oddly, "List of Fish Orders" is not as easy to find online as you'd think, with the British Encyclopedia & Wikipedia both lacking this. I ended up finding a random Evolution Chart containing all of the ones I was missing in a random fish bio somewhere on Wikipedia, hence stuff like Clownfish & Tang showing up right near the end (I might have forgotten them entirely, despite both being famous thanks to Pixar!).

This set... ended up with a lot of PL 0 (15) builds. Turns out 98% of all fish species are like that- too small and harmless to humans to differentiate in M&M stats. Anything under 8 lbs. was probably gonna not be worth changing up the stats in a system meant for human-sized creatures as the default. But hey! There's some interesting ones out there! Plus the occasional giants like Bluefin Tuna, Groupers & Sunfish- never mind the colossal Oarfish!

Disabled (Animal)- Fish cannot speak to humans, nor use their fins to easily manipulate objects.
Disabled (Aquatic)- Fish typically will not last long on land- they are borderline immobile, can't defend themselves, and will slowly dehydrate or suffocate.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, these fish are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on these fish effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -30 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 24 / Defenses: 6 (13)

Era: Modern Day
Range: All waters of the Earth.
Stereotypes: Emotionless, blank creatures.
Colouring: White, grey, brown, black.
Size: 3-5 feet long (4-10 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or small groups.
Diet: Tiny crustaceans & molluscs.
Tactics: Flee at all costs or hide in sand.

-An odd-looking order of fish, the Chimaeriformes are so ancient they have no skeletons- only cartilege- and their closest relatives are the Skates & Rays. Now mostly deepsea-dwellers, they are elongated fish with bulky heads. Names include Ratfish, Ghostshark, Rabbit Fish (for their large-eyed face) and Chimaera, and the fish are usually bottom-feeders, eating invertebrates and small fish. They're pretty generic second-tier fish otherwise.
