Encounter Groups: Hordes of two to thousands.
Diet: Tiny plankton.
Tactics: Flee at all costs. "School" together for defense.

-Triggerfish are popular in aquariums for their bright colors, but they are notoriously ill-tempered and don't make good "tank-mates". This is because having a territory is necessary to mate- they will thus put a lot of focus in fighting rival males. Their prey are typically slow-moving invertebrates like sea urchins, so they have little need for speed. They are named for their pairs of dorsal spines, activated via a "trigger"- depressing one will make the other stick up. These spines are meant to draw predators away- it's hard to bite them without being jabbed. This gives them a small "Aura" power, but only against tiny animals. The three-pronged Triplespine is closely-related and shares the same stats.

Encounter Groups: Solitary.
Diet: Small fish, squid & crustaceans.
Tactics: Flee.

-The largest bony fish in the world is the absolutely gigantic Ocean Sunfish- a titan that weighs anywhere from 500-4,500 lbs.! They resemble large fish heads with fins- their bodies are flattened laterally, making them "thin" and both tall and long in equal measure, and their tails have disappeared. Females of the species can produce more eggs than any other known vertebrate- up to 300,000,000 at a time! They're very hard to keep in aquariums- I've seen one of very few on display at the Kaiyukan Aquarium in Osaka, Japan, where they are almost as popular as their signature Whale Sharks.

-There are a handful of Sunfish species, all very large- the Hoodwink Sunfish was the first new sepecies discovered in 130 years, washing up on a Hawaiian shore in 2015! Most of these are a small bit lighter weight, but still huge- Toughness +5-6.

Flatfish

Post by Jabroniville »

FLATFISH:
-The order of Pleuronectiformes contains among the most bizarre fish in the world, but some are normal-looking. They are distinctive for the fact that their bodies are nearly always flat, but their eyes and mouth are all shoved onto the "flat" plane instead of in the middle, making them some of the least-symmetrical creatures on Earth. They are born symmetrical, but the eyes gravitate to one side as the skeleton ossifies. Contained in this order are some of the most important food fish species, including the Flounder & Halibut. There are 800 species among sixteen families.

-Sole are included among the smaller Flatfish- others are the Tonguefish, Brill, Plaice and Dabs. The Dover Sole is the only one in Europe called a "Sole". Most resemble scaly tongues- in China, sole are called "Dragon Tongues". They are bottom-feeders who are incredibly popular as food fish for human consumption.

-A very common food fish caught by humans, Halibut are actually quite large and weird-looking, having the distinctive "Flatfish" frame, with both eyes shoved onto the same side. Halibut are usually much smaller than people, but can be HUGE, weighing over 400 lbs., so their stats can differ greatly. They are quite counter-shaded, dark on top and light on the bottom.

-The order of Carangiformes are diverse and contain a lot of different animals, but most of what I can see are around 30 lbs. The include the Jacks, Amberjacks, Scads, Trevallies, Queenfish, Rainbow-Runners, and the Pilot Fish, notable for hanging about sharks and rays, feeding on their various parasites. Related fish described later are the Remoras & Dolphinfish, and many of these fish can also grow to man-sizes.

-The Dolphinfish is a large Carangiforme probably named due to superficially resembling a porpoise, and making similar high-pitched noises. Growing up to 88 lbs., they are often found near seaweed beds, ferreting out prey like small molluscs and forage fish. Its meat is labeled with the Hawaiian name, Mahi-Mahi, so consumers won't think actual dolphin meat is being sold.

-The largest of the Carangiformes, the Giant Trevally can weigh up to 176 lbs.- many Jack relatives are similar in scale, and smaller specimens found to be 10-30 lbs. can grow to huge scale as well (including the Roosterfish, usually netted at 20 lbs. but growing up to 100 lbs.). Bluefin Trevallies are common across the Pacific Ocean, where they play an important part to people in the island nations found there. They are good predators, mostly eating shellfish.

-Remoras are famous for their ability to use their modified dorsal fins as suction cups to attach themselves to sea animals (usually sharks and whales- it's hard to find images of sharks WITHOUT remoras on them sometimes), then eating loose bits of skin and various oceanic parasites. This means the relationship is typically mutually-beneficial. The suction cup is very odd- swimming backwards increases suction, and swimming forwards releases it. Names for various species include Sharksucker, Whalesucker & Lousefish, and most are 12-48 inches long.

-The Stomiiformes order is made up of bioluminescent, deepsea predators like the Dragonfish and Viperfish, most of which are known for their gigantic mouths and tiny bodies. They look positively horrifying, but all are less than 30cm long. The deep-sea Dragonfish has one of the famous barbels used to lure in prey (and mates), waving it back and forth or "blinking" it on and off to draw attention. The Bristlemouths don't have much diversity within their family, but make up for it by vast populations- believed to number into the trillions or even quadrillions (!). These are all vast predators or Lanternfishes, which operate at the same depths.

Diet: Small shrimp, Lanternfish.
Tactics: Lure in prery and attach with great speed.

-The iconic Anglerfish are of the order Lophiiformes, and are deep-sea predators with lures above their gigantic mouths- these draw in unsuspecting fish, hoping for other prey, which are then devoured- the creatures have distended stomachs and soft skeletons, allowing them to swallow creatures literally twice their own size. The lures glow with bioluminescence, acquired from the Anglerfish eating bacteria from seawater. Also of note is the GIGANTIC size difference between males and females- females are several orders of magnitude larger than males (nicccccccce...), and males may even literally symbiotically attach themselves to females, joining their organs together permanently. The Sea Devils & Footballfish behave in this manner, with one or more males (6 inches long) combining their circulatory system with a gigantic female (3-4 feet long)- some males are born with teeth that could never retain prey, meaning they must find a female soon after maturing in order to survive at all!

-The lures can be either bioluminescent or appearing like actual animals- Frogfish tend to have lures that look like actual species- typically white worms or shrimp. They have incredible camouflage, often looking like sea urchins or sargassum fish. Handfish look a little more like regular fish, but still have lures and upturned mouths. Handfish are unusual for the way they crawl along the seafloor using their pectoral fins.

-Anglerfish are INCREDIBLY fast biters, with Frogfish able to bite prey within 6 milliseconds. Still, most are very small, and even the long ones are soft-bodied and can only really kill shrimp & Lanternfish (which are also tiny).

It is impossible for me to be disturbed by anglerfish anymore, thanks to this.

-The Labriformes include the Wrasses and Cales, along with the Parrotfish- 630 species in all. Wrasses have oddly protracted mouths with thick lips. Cleaner Wrasses are the most well-known "Cleaner Fish"- fish that eat the parasites off of other fish, grooming them in a way- these fish will actually set up "cleaner stations" and serve HUNDREDS of other fish per day, as even deadly predators will allow the fish to swim into their open mouths for this purpose.

-The brightly-colored Parrotfish are named for their bright colors and prominent beaks, which are used to scrape or tear off chunks of coral- their primary food. Some Parrotfish can actualy leave visible scars across the hard coral. Unusually, some Parrotfish can emit a kind of mucous that envelops them before they go to sleep- this can either be a method to eliminate their scent (making it harder for predators to find them) or an early-warning system allowing them to escape- a predator would have to bite the mucous first, giving the Parrotfish a chance to escape. Almost all Parrotfish are females- they slowly turn to males as they gain size- some Parrotfish can actually be quite substantial- up to 20 lbs.
