A soldier take each Aiden and Diego by the arm. Their grip their grip firm as they escort them pair away from the Impala and back behind the barricade. Aiden get a disgusted look from his escort, while Diego repeatedly tries to calm him, though the soldier's voice is more stern than it is empathetic.

The third soldier lags behind, covering the car. Once Diego and Aiden are behind the barricade of cars, surrounded by soldiers and police officers, the lone soldier near the Impala take a canister off his belt. He uses his teeth to pull a pin from it, then tosses the canister into the Impala's interior through the driver side door. Afterwards he begins to quickly back-peddle towards the barricade.

John and Iona hear a thump. Then hissing. Soon a thick gray-white gas is flooding the vehicle's interior. John's eyes begin to burn.

Damn! Tear Gas! As the gas begins to spread through (and out of) the Impala, John closes his eyes and holds his breath.
Here's John's Fortitude check: Fortitude Roll vs. Tear Gas: 1d20+8 20. So, a total of 20.
Fortunately, the veteran soldier has had training in the past in dealing with weaponized irritants. He does not panic even though his eyes already feel some discomfort. Still underneath the tarp, reaches beneath the passenger side seat to grab his knife and pistol. Stashing them quickly into his inside coat pockets, he reaches up around the edge of the tarp and feels for the door handle.
OOC: John will make sure the weapons are inside his jacket and not in his hands as he emerges from the car. He does not wish to give any rifleman an excuse to immediately shoot him.
Opening it, he crawls from underneath the tarp, out the door, and onto the street (still lying on his belly). Pretending to be more debilitated than he actually is, he begins to slowly crawl away from the car -coughing frantically - just far enough to be outside the tear gas.
Here is John's Deception roll to appear debilitated by the tear gas: Deception Roll vs. Military: 1d20 15. So, a total of 15.

Aiden Starr
HP: 2, Condition: Fatigued

Aiden makes no effort to resist and just lets the man escort him away. He remains quiet to avoid drawing any more attention to himself.

Instead, he just keeps his eyes mostly closed like he is falling asleep.

Also, not a stretch.

As the smoke starts to creep underneath the tarp, Iona can hear and feel John begin to move. Bags and luggage shift as the burly soldier scrambles to open the car door on his side and escape.

Iona does not feel quite the same pressure to escape the car quickly. Nevertheless, she does desire to keep the ruse going a little longer. She reaches up to find the car door on the opposite side of the vehicle from John. After opening it, she mimics John's behavior and climbs slowly from the floorboard of the car on her belly. She crawls away from the car without raising her head, doing anything she can to obscure a clear view of her face.

Moving in the exact opposite direction as John from the car, she only stops crawling when she is a good 15'-20' outside the edge of the smoke.
Here is Iona's Deception roll to appear debilitated by the tear gas: Deception Roll vs. Military: 1d20+8 27. So, a total of 27.

As Diego kept up the charade, he tailored his reaction to the gas rising in the air. "I can't tell how much your help means to me man. It as such a crazy few days. Wait..whats that smoke? The cars on fire!", exclaims Diego in fake shock staying in character. In the back of his mind, hostilities had begun. He had two choices now. Get them to drive Aidan and him away or stay and fight leaving Iona and John to their own devices. He ran the calculations on the forces size and figured the ones around him should fall quick enough. It was that sniper he worried about. His mind ran through his training from before on procedures against possibly meta human threats, but even with his evovled form it was tough to recall.

OOC wrote:Diego doesn't put together anything noteworthy.

Prior to the advent of Iona, Macro-Virus Hitori, and the Ascendants, there were only six super-beings. Dr. Impossible (missing/dead), Imperator (missing/dead), and Imperator's four Preators. The Praetor's being Null, Dr. Sokolov, Skald (dead), and Anastasia (Not actually a meta-human. Diego knows she has no powers, but rather possesses an Imperator-tech ring that Null wants). Diego only learned about Skald and Anastasia recently. It is unlikely even the best intelligence agencies in the world know much, if anything, about them. In any case, fights involving these people tend to be one sided and short. Training to combat meta-human threats isn't even a thing for the military. As each of these people are very different from the others. The general rule is "focus overwhelming fire on the biggest threat". Stronghold is another matter. But Diego doesn't know about the inner workings of Stronghold.

Some reminders:
- This isn't like Marvel, DC, or Freedom City. Keep that in mind. There is no bloated meta-human population.
- Dr. Impossible, the first superhuman the world has ever seen, has been active since WW2.
- The army only had six months of exposure to Imperator and Dr. Sokolov. Null only fought in one battle, and it was devastating. Skald and Anastasia are unknown to all but a handful of people.
- Diego knows of one other possible super-being who may or may not still be alive. A member of the First Generation named Anika. The only evidence of her superhuman nature is a video wherein she exploded with energy.
- The First Generation push the boundaries of human potential, but remain very human. The world has only had nine month of exposure to them. They're mostly unknown/unrecognized outside of Hadron City.
- There are rumors about members of the Jaguars having superhuman strength and durability, but those are unconfirmed rumors, and haven't even been circulating for three months.
- While Diego knows that the Macro-Virus pre-dates human history, it has been dormant up until WW2, and it's existence covered up until the Wichita outbreak. That's been about two weeks.

John and Iona crawl their way out from under the baggage and trap, out of the car and clear of the gas cloud. Overhead the midday sun glares down on them, heating the asphalt under them. Overtime, skin contact with it would go from uncomfortable, to painful. Behind them the tear gas cleared. But now a soldier had a gun leveled on Iona. His mouth moved, but he was too far away to hear. Whatever he said summoned nine more soldiers from behind the barricade. Five men and women, loaded for bear, swarmed over John and Iona while one barked out orders.

"Stay down! Hands behind your head! No sudden moves!"

Meanwhile, over one hundred feet away behind the barricade, Diego was escorted behind the armored personnel carrier. The man walking with him speaking placatingly.

"Don't worry. We have the situation in hand. Just stay here."

Despite the 'stay here' comment, Diego's chaperone didn't leave him alone.

Aiden's escort, noting the decline in the youth's prior drunken stupor gave him a scrutinizing look. For a time they walked with Diego's escort. But when they reached the APC he spoke to his companion.

"I think it's best to keep them separate for now."

Diego's escort looked over at Aiden, his dark brown eyes lingering for a time, then he nodded in support of his fellow's caution. At that point Aide was walked over to a police squad car behind he barricade. The car door opened, and Aiden guidingly pushed to the backseat.

"You sobered up fast. What's your name kid?"

"Stay down! Hands behind your head! No sudden moves!"
John remains facedown on the side of the road although his face does not actually touch the hot concrete. His jacketed elbows rest on the ground and both his hands are behind his head. He knows that he cannot be the first to act. In fact, he must be very careful to act at all. He has no body armor, no cover, no camouflage, and most importantly no para-normal abilities to protect himself.

Oddly enough, the impending promise of a fight brings him some peace. It's one of the few things in life he clearly understands. He relaxes. As far as he's concerned his own leaders' hands will be forced...soon. The initial mission goal is almost certainly unattainable now. Inside, John feels a sense of relief. Despite his own sense of pride, lust for money, and selfish motives, he doesn't want to burn his bridge with Anna Semenov...at least not yet.

He knows that the soldiers and police will be moving in soon to restrain him and take him away. For now cooperation is his only means of survival; his only means to a moment of opportunity.

The female cyborg remains largely motionless, only moving to comply with the soldier's instructions. Her hands are behind her head, and she continues to feign her discomfort by keeping any areas of "skin" off the hot pavement.

While lying still, he focuses more on her ultra-hearing in order to perceive frequencies outside the range normal human hearing. She has no idea where Diego and Aiden are, but she guesses that they have been moved to the "secure" area with most of the vehicles. She knows that John went out the opposite rear door, but she has no clear idea how far away from the Impala he crawled. All in all, she is on her own at the moment. The only question remaining is when to act. Was Diego expecting her to initiate the hostilities or wait for some moment when the soldiers were more vulnerable? So far it seems that her team is largely complying with all the instructions, but it could very well be that enforcements are on the way.

Just because we are cooperating doesn't mean these soldiers aren't requesting more assets to secure us. We must act soon.
OOC: What can Iona see out of her peripheral vision? She knows that she cannot get a bird's eye view of the tactical situation, but she would like to assess how many viable targets she has nearby.
Here is the Perception roll requested by Sakuro: Perception Roll at Checkpoint: 1d20+10 22. So, a total of 22.

Aiden allows himself to be dragged by the officer. As soon as he gets placed in the car seat, he slumps his head against the front seat and closes his eyes.

He doesn't have the skills to pretend to be drunk - he pretty much used up his whole routine already, but he doesn't need to pretend to be tired. He is probably more tired than he has been in a long tired. Mental fatigue from hours of flying or assisting Dr Sokolov in the lab is one thing, but this is physical fatigue on top of it.

He just mumbles unintelligible sounds as the officer tries to start a conversation.

Hearing isn't accurate as sight for Iona. She listens though. She can hear someone shouting directions on the other side of the Impala, hear the movement of boot clad foot on asphalt. From her position she is also able to see multiple pair of feet from under the car. She can hear radio signals, like white noise, branching away from the group around her and John. Back to the barricade and off to the right and left of the road. Exact location of receivers are uncertain.

Complying with the soldiers John and Iona put their hands behind their heads. Once this is done a soldier from each group lowers their rifle and approaches them. Putting a knee into their backs each of the two soldiers grab at their wrists pulling them behind their back one at a time, then clamps on a pair of handcuffs. After the handcuffs are in place they begin patting John and Iona down.

It was now between a rock and a hard place. Alone, he'd be able to escape maybe. Leaving Aiden would mean the most expeditious way back into the city was gone. Losing Iona and John, well they might leak information. John was on the brink as is and Iona's body was a leak. In his current form, fighting off everyone wasn't viable. He'd need to truly unleash his power which would undoubtedly draw the ire of Praetor Null. Leaving Iona in the hands of Stronghold would also draw Praetor Null's ire. There was one chance. A quickly victory and making it look like the macrovirus somehow.

Falling to the ground clutching his stomach as if in agony, Diego starts shifting into his most potent combat form. Rising into position for maximum effect with at least the machine gunner in the mix into his full slaughtering form glory, Diego reached out as far as he could with tentacle like slashing arms at the cops and soldiers.

As he slashed, his perhaps physically deadliest form was on full display. It started as an ooze, but not ooze looking shape as if oil could rise and take form. That alone wasn't terribly frightening as its been played out in horror movies time and again. It was the part that came after which not even horror movies would touch. Tentacles lined with all manner black bladed weapons sprung from the mass with no two looking alike. Some had standard axe head looking protrusions while others had beyond description sharp edges that seemed to defy physics yet sliced all the same. For good measure, a few had claws, but Diego had taken the gloves off. They had to eliminate the enemy fast and to throw them off their game, Diego didn't hold back on adding a fright factor into the mix.
Attack 29 power attack +2/-2
If it hits DC 25 toughness
Since its forces, I don't think takedown would come into effect. If it does I can roll another attack.
Deception 17

Diego weaponizes his nanite mass and sends it into the unsuspecting backs of the soldier and police stationed near the barricade. Black bladed tentacles lash and plunge outwards. Kevlar armor is cleaved. Blood spills. Confusion erupts at the barricade as men and woman turn to deal with the threat at their backs. There are shouts as someone tries to call out orders and tries to organize the group before it break apart in chaos. There are other cries, cries of pain. Cries of confusion. 'Man down!', 'What is going on?', 'What is that thing?'.

Out by the Impala a couple of the soldiers look back at the barricade. Someone curses. Suddenly their disposition hardens as they look back to their wouldbe prisoners. In her peripheral vision can make out the conflict erupting over one hundred feet away.
OOC wrote:I'm going to treat Diego's initial attack a surprise round. He's been really good at playing the victim. No one sees it coming.

Diego hits his mark and does significant damage to the squad of police and soldiers at the barricade. While Stunned, their Morale holds. You are correct, Takedown is only for Minions.

Aiden and John and going to be excluded from the combat. They're not going to be able to have a meaningful impact on a fight of this scale. If you want to take non-combat actions (hide, prep an escape vehicle, etc.), you may do so. Aiden is going to be slow to rouse, however, and will not be able to act for the first two rounds of combat.

John is handcuffed. I still need a Sleight of hand from him to determine whether his weapons have been found and taken.

Roll Initiative for Iona. Declare/describe her actions.

We're entering Mas Combat. I am not going to put up all the rules, but some things to note:
Mass Combat wrote: - Forces have a Morale stat. When they take damage, fail to inflict damage, or suffer a major setback this is rolled to see if they break/disperse.
- Damaging effects with the Area extra inflict +2 damage to a Force, with each additional Area rank (the Extra itself) increasing this bonus by +1, but the total additional damage cannot exceed the target force’s Force rank. Squads, which you are facing are Force 3.
- Non-damaging powers that do not normally affect an area have a negligible effect on a force in battle. The character can only use such powers if they have the sufficient Area ranks to encompass the entire force.
- Forces and Combine into a larger, higher rank Force. They need to be adjacent and this tanks a Standard Action.
- Two forces may attempt to catch an opponent in between them, flanking that opponent. If two forces are located on opposite sides of a target, each force gains a +2 circumstance bonus to attack checks against that target
Initiative Order wrote: Squad #3 (21, hill. Flanking people on the road)

Squad #1 (15, at barricade, Disrupted x1 and Stunned)

As the soldier get's almost close enough touch the young cyborg lying prone on the ground, a strange smell enters his nostrils...ozone.

With the air about her ionized, Dr. Sokolov's creation becomes the epicenter for a broad pulse of electrical current running from her, through the nearby air, and into the ground. Her body then levitates slightly from her prone position on the ground and veers off through the crowd of nearby soldiers towards the hilly terrain flanking the road. Like some kind of "smart" cruise missile, she weaves a flight-path of destruction through any patch of soldiers she can find, sending out periodic pulses of current to electrocute any who are too close.
OOC: The above post outlines Iona's basic strategy (at least initially). She will stay relatively low to the ground in order to reduce expose to enemy fire, but she will make sweeping passes near any groups of soldiers she can identify with her keen senses. At her discretion, she'll emit her broad area electrical attack to wound/kill as many as possible.

The screaming and cries of fear begin. John knows that the Ascendant and/or Iona have unleashed there wrath. But the burly soldier has already allowed his hands to be cuffed behind his back. He remains still, complying only just as much as he must with the soldier's demands.
OOC: Here is John's attempt to keep is knife and pistol concealed within the interior pockets of his jacket: Concealment roll for Weapons: 1d20+1 3. Ha! a 3. It won't take much for the soldier to tell that John is "packing heat".
