Once inside the base, Iona sends instructions ahead to the infirmary while Major Karlsten has her armor removed. Once on the stretcher, portions of the woman’s garments are cut away while multiple leads are attached to sticky electrodes placed on her body. Rolling alongside the stretcher is a large monitor with multi-parameter displays providing all pertinent data on Valkyrie’s vitals. Iona orders a small sample of blood to be drawn and rushed ahead to the lab for a Basic Metabolic Panel in the hopes that the report will be available shortly after the patient arrives in surgery. After the patient is properly prepped, she is swiftly (yet cautiously) transported to the sick bay.
The infirmary is initially chaotic as various personnel: orderlies, nurses, techs, and other specialists scramble to get their equipment in place and unpacked. The Major is barely on the operating-table when the expedited lab report makes its way into Iona’s hands.
Blood type O-positive. At least it’s not some rare blood type of which we have no supply. “
Nurse, please begin a transfusion of type O-positive. I’ve already identified two, possibly three areas that may need arterial sutures.”
Looking back at the blood report, Iona identifies the abnormal chemical compounds coursing through Valkyrie’s veins. She pauses for a moment -in thought- as she looks up from the clipboard.
What if she begins manifesting symptoms of overdose again during surgery? You must be prepared for that before you begin any procedures.
“
Nurse? One more thing…”, she says softly, “
Please have a dose of Naloxone ready. I don’t think we’ll need it since we’re transfusing new blood, but just in case.” The cyborg no sooner finishes speaking than the obnoxious “BEEEEEEEEEEEEP!” of the EKG sounds out. “
She’s flatlining!”, a young anesthesia-nurse yells out. “
Begin CPR! Get the defibrillator ready!”, Iona barks – a rare moment of outburst from an otherwise immutably calm demeanor.
The female cyborg continues to work as she speaks to her assistant physician. “
The main source of her bleeding is in the liver area. I need to identify it now and clamp it or she’ll bleed out as fast as we put in new blood. Pulling out the blood-soaked gauze from Valkyrie’s wound, Iona probes around in the warrior’s upper abdomen for several seconds with the gloved-fingers of one hand while shining a small light down into the body-cavity to see. “Ah! There it is. The Inferior Vena Cava has been lacerated. Hand me that clamp!” Reaching in with the instrument, there is a clicking sound as the vein is forcibly closed.
CPR continues for about 15 minutes while the patient’s blood level slowly increases. “
Ok….let’s clear for the defibrillator.” The two pads send a current through The Major’s chest producing a convulsion. The continuous whine of the EKG is replaced by the repetitive yet steady ping indicating a stable heart rhythm. The tension in the OR drops as the patient returns to an acceptable level of stability.
Turning to the physician who assists her in the infirmary, Iona lays out the plan. “
We’ll do the vascular work first. When we finish, we’ll keep her under general anesthesia and take some X-rays. We’ll then proceed with any orthopedic surgery that is necessary. Lastly, we’ll address ligament and tendon tears, but we may not be able to identify those injuries until she is conscious and can give us some feedback. Hopefully there is no brain damage. We’ll evaluate her when she regains consciousness to determine if she needs a CT scan. She could very well need multiple surgeries given the extent of her injuries.” Once she is certain that her chief physician understands the priorities, Iona makes sure that each member of the medical team is following proper surgical protocols before dawning scrubs, sterilizing her hands, and going to work.
OOC: I didn’t mention giving things like anti-biotics and anti-inflammatory medicines, but I hope they (along with other forms of medication) can be assumed. Also, Iona is curious about the nature of the “performance enhancing drugs” that were used on Valkyrie. Specifically, if they are super-science in nature. Iona would like to take a small vial of Valkyries blood and cryogenically store it in her lab for later research.
