SO i got the GI joe RPG recently and its been a fun read so far the system is relatively easy to understand and creartion is easy enough.

Im debating a run of the rule book adventure and the two follow ups just to see if i can.

Soi far only thing missing from the game is a list of the GI Joes themsevles though theres a good list of the Cobras top brass

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised by the lack of official writeups for established Joes and Transformers, but I could see that being held in reserve for a kind of 'monster manual' for later release.

ok so I did a play test with the new system to see how she works and it was fun and easier than i thought.

I made my CS commando into a GI Joe Commando did one version at lvl 1 and then upgraded her to level 7

first test was her at lvl 1 against 5 vipers in a knife fight

second test was her at lvl 7 vs the classic 5 nazis and a tank in this case 4 cobra troopers 1 Anti tank viper and a cobra officer with a moto viper in a HISS tank

She did surprisingly well both times using her skills and judicious use of Story points she took out all the vipers only taking 2 wounds the entire fight. and in the other test she didnt take a single hit but took out all the troops and the tank

Ok so test #1

Reaper lvl 1 vs 5 Cobra Vipers in a knife fight

the midnight black shadow that was GI Joes latest addition slipped quietly through the night of the city moving like a ghost. Shed been given this assignment in San Diego to investigate some preliminary reports of Cobra activity which Dial Tone had discovered on a standard intel sweep.

The Intel had been a bit vague but needed checking and as she was new to the team they sent her in. Still Sensei Snake Eyes had insisted she could handle the situation and buoyed by her silent teachers confidence and a thumbs up from his red headed lady love Scarlet had sent her off to the sunshine state.

So far though shed had bupkus to show for her efforts at least until now. Shaking down a couple of low rent thugs had yielded an address. And a quick scout of the area found it disturbingly quiet for a low rent district as if something had been scaring off the locals. Slipping past an active security camera she made entry into the target. A non-descript office building one of many in the area. She bypassed the guard at the front who was absorbed in a television program and a game of candy crush on his phone.

Stealthing past him she paid him no further mind as she made her way deeper into the building. She searched the place for the better part of ten minutes with no success and began wondering if the two rats shed rousted had sent her on a wild goose chase when a door that hadnt been there previously opened wide and five Vipers walked out into the open area she was in and froze at the sight of her. A rather intimidating sight as she was given the armored suit she wore with its Skull like mask and tattered cowl giving her the codename shed earned in Advanced training.

The Reaper

The tableau froze for a moment as shock wore off and one of the Vipers yelled "GET HER!!" breaking the silence and sending everything into chaos

The five vipers whipped out their knives and advanced on her spreading out to try and surround her and keep her from escaping. It was ok She wasnt planning on escaping anyways As she grinned beneath the mask and pulled out her long knife the Rambo special as someone remarked 15 inches of serrated edge laser sharpened blade. She hefted it feeling its comforting weight as she shifted her position and made ready to fight.

As they closed in around her one jeered at her "Who do you think you are, some cosplay ninja?" eliciting some nervous laughter from the others as they bolstered their courage.

Their laughter didnt last long though as she didnt hesitate and lashed out with the knife at the jeerer who promptly crumpled clutching the stump of an arm where a hand with a knife had been. Her knifes blade gleamed in the dim light of the office its razor edge showing not even a drop of blood on it as her first victim crumpled with a howl of agony.

"Not a ninja. Grim Reaper" her voice modulated to a soft whisper which sent shudders down peoples spines when they heard it thanks to the mask and the sudden violence caused the four remaining Vipers to hesitate and jerk backwards in abject terror. They flailed wildly at her with crazed swings of their blades but she deftly ducked or weaved through their attacks with little effort.
Round 1

Reaper Initiative 15 + 2/ 3/ =18, Vipers 8/ 12

Reaper attacks with Long Knife Finesse +2 +2 Upshift for expertise and Specialization Rolls 18 + 1, 3, 6, 7 24 hit and Crits deal 2 damage will use critical to Intimidate the remaining 4 her intimidation check untrained 15/15 vs the vipers willpower of 11 succeeds. the vipers are frightened and receive a -2 down to attack her for this round

Viper all 4 vipers attack but at -2 auto fail to hit her

Reaper full health

Vipers 4 frightened, 1 Defeated
She didnt wait for any more response and leapt to the attack again her blade lashing out at a Viper on her right who wasnt fast enough to get out of the way and he promptly dropped like a sack of potatoes while clutching his gut which was bleeding A knee slammed into his face and he went down for good.

the other three jumped in at her as one of them a tall dark skinned woman yelled in rage "ATTACK you Morons its just one woman! COBRAAAA!!"

They obeyed the tone of voice and echoed the battlecry as they surged in at her like a wave threatening to overwhelm her most of their attacks missed or she evaded but the tall woman was apparently more skilled than the others and she managed to swipe at her as she backpedaled from one of the attacks and laid a cut along her upper arm which caused her to hiss in pain.

Round 2

Reaper attacks the second viper Finesse +2 Specialized her roll same numbers 14 + 2, +2, +3, +2 17 hits and inflicts 2 damage defeating the second one

Vipers will spend GM Story point to recover from frightened condition and attack

Viper 3 attacks rolls 19 + 2 21 hits for 1 damage
Viper 4 attacks rolls 15 + 1 17 misses
Viper 5 attacks rolls 11 + 1 12 misses

Reaper -1 health

Vipers 3 left
2 Defeated


She reset herself remembering her sparring sessions with Master Snake Eyes one of the best bladesmen in the world and kept the long knife close and low and in front of her then she rushed forward and engaged the biggest of the three remaining vipers and in a quick series of strikes landed a stab into her opponents arm pit shoving the knife up through the armored vest he wore and up into his ribs before twisting it and pulling it out which caused him to fall with a sigh.

The other two attacked with a yell but she deftly evaded one wild swipe and blocked another shuffling her feet backwards to make sure she was in position to finish the fight


Round 3

Reaper Attacks Viper 3 Finesse D4 Specialization 15, +2, +4, +3,+ 2 19 Critical hit 3 damage Viper defeated

Viper #4 Attacks Might +1D2 15 + 1 16 miss
Viper # 5 Attacks Might +1D2 5 + 2 7 miss

Reaper -1 health

vipers 2 active 3 defeated

She decided to take on the female boss last and she ducked under a wild swing before slamming the long knife backwards into the Vipers ribcage yanking it out with a hard back kick which sent the body tumbling backwards. She then dropped into a split which let her dodge the lead Vipers wild swipe.


Round 4

Reaper Attacks Finesse D4 Specialization 18, +2, 4, 2, 7; 22 Critical success 3 damage Viper defeated

Viper 5 Attacks Might +1D2 8 +1 9 misses

Reaper -1 health

"Last chance to run." she said quietly to the Viper whod landed the only hit shed taken. a bit of respect in her voice.

"DIE!" she shrieked in return as she raised the knife overhead for a massive stab. the stab though never connected and the Viper looked around confused as her opponent wasnt in front of her any more, She looked around and saw the black clad foe standing behind her

She tried to turn but her body betrayed her for some reason and it was only when she felt the warmth on her chest and looked down that she realized why. the Attack had been swift and precise and lethal. As her consciousness left her she saw the skull like face looking down at her a soft red glow in the empty eye sockets and she shuddered one last time before everything went black

Katherine sighed and collapsed back against a wall for a second as she checked her arm the wound wasnt deep and wouldnt need stitches most likely she could clean it and fix it at her temporary base when she returned. She looked at the fallen woman and gave a brief bow of respect before turning to enter the room theyd come from.

She still had a job to do after all and she was a Joe.

Round 5

So end result was a bit of shocker as a level 1 commando with some good rolls managed to basically goon sweep 5 vipers straight up. the one viper actually connected but the others had a bit of rotten luck and were dealing with a skilled fighter espeically with knives.

interestingly the same numbers would have held up if shed gone straight hand to hand shed have kicked their rear ends in a couple more rounds easilly

next up 1 level 7 commando against 5 Cobra troopers, a Cobra Officer a Motoviper and a HISS tank

So next up is our 5 Cobras and a Tank test. Reaper is level 7 for this. the area is a semi open grassland with some slightly tall grass and bushes and a smattering of trees mostly open but with some hiding spots. The enemies are A Cobra officer, 4 Cobra troopers, and 1 HEAT Viper with an Anti Tank launcher. And one Moto Viper driving a HISS tank.

So the basis for the test is she needs to take out the 4 troopers the Viper and the officer and either Hit the tank for half its health to disable it at minimum or destroy it at best.

so here we go


A low roar of an engine preceded the HISS tank as it crested the hill in pursuit of its quarry. In the tanks Turret Officer Smythe looked through his binoculars and scanned the area looking for the four GI Joes who had so far eluded them. Nothing greeted his sight except the waste high pampas grass that was everywhere and the few scattered trees and bushes that made up the plateaus eco system. He wasnt too worried though about not finding them as they were slowed by having to babysit the 2 scientists theyd freed from the Terrordromes cells. the civilians would slow them down and the troops waiting at the only airport would hold them long enough for his patrol and the others on their sweeps to pincer them between the guns of the tanks and the fortifications of the airports defenses. He called for the patrol to move out and they did. four troopers and Anderson the HEAT Viper who hefted his Tank Buster rocket launcher as the patrol moved forward in a line trying to drive the Joes to their doom.

In the trees near the small clearing where shed just left her teamates Katherine Mccloud AkA Reaper stood watching the patrol come her way. Shed volunteered to stay behind and delay the patrol knowing the risk and knowing it was neccesary. the team had taken some hits in the extraction, And were moving slowly which meant the Cobra forces driving them to the airports defenses were going to catch them unless someone delayed them long enough for the team to make it to the actual rendezvous on the coast with the rescue choppers and the USS FLAGG.

That was her And she was more than ready As the HISS tank moved across the field surrounded by its escort she marked all of them through the Skull like masks HUD display and with a centering breath she melted into the long grass moving with it as if she were a part of it.

She crept through the grass like a shark through the water silently until she came up to her target. the Frag Viper with his oversized Rocket launcher was trailing behind the tank while the four soliders flanked it as outriders. There was no sound as she came up out of the grass like a snaker her arms wrapped around his throat as her hand went over his mouth and she squeezed hard and though he struggled it was only a moment ebfore he went relaxed and she dragged him over off the path the tank had left concealing him in he high grass.

Ahead of her the Officer in the turret and the troopers didnt even turn around unaware as to what had happened. Reaching down she quickly grabbed the straps holding the HEAT Vipers Rocket Launcher and the backpack with its targeting computer and Ammo stores and hefted it over her shoulder before moving off into the grass as fast as she could. She sprinted low around the patrol and secreted the Launcher and pack a little ahead of the squad ready for a surprise.

Round 1

Initiative counts for all

Reaper 18 + 1, +2, +4, +3 = 22, Cobra Officer 11+4 = 15, Cobra Troopers 4/15 =4, Frag Viper 3/1 = 1, HISS Driver/Tank 16/12 =12

Reaper will begin by stealthing across the field towards the HEAT viper her roll 18/12 + 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 11 Critical Success 28 She sneaky as heck

the Cobras will make Alertness checks to see her but thanks to her shadow trait theyre they receive -2 Down to attempt to see her when stealthed which is an auto fail this round

she moves quickly and covers the distance between her and the Frag Viper and executes a takedown attack using her hands Might roll 14 + 2, 4, 4, 6 = 18 Critical Success vs the Frag Vipers toughness and hes out for 1D4 (3 minutes) shell make the crit that she gets his rocket launcher as a free action and moves it to a tactically advantageous position with her move action

The CO and Troopers remain blissfully unaware this round.
Moving out from the position she kept low through the grass before setting herself into a small bush where she waited patiently as the patrol approached. She could feel the hum of the HISS tanks engines and tracks moving closer and as the first trooper passed her she remained perfectly still. But when the second one got close enough she lashed out drove her knee into his groin as hard as she could and then into his face with a brutal crunch. the man stiffened then went limp before she dragged his body off behind the bush.

Still the Cobra soldiers remained unaware of her.

Round 2

Reaper will continue to sneak her infiltration roll this round her ifiltration stealth roll 19/8 +1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 12 = 31 Crit success wow shes on fire

the Cobras cant even touch that

She sneaks up on one of the troopers near the rear to takedown attack her roll Might 17/11 +2, 2, 1, 4 = 21 Success vs his toughness and hes down for 1D4 (3 Minutes lol)

The Cobras still cannot spot her and remain unaware


Reaper kept on the move knowing that she had to be quick to take out the rest of the squad before they got moving which meant her team would be caught before they could make the rendezvous. She slipped up to the thrid trooper in line at the end and though she was rushing she popped up right in his face and dropped him with a hard right to the jaw followed by several hard elbows which rendered him unconscious and in need of a dentist.

Ahead of her Smythe was stretching his neck to remove a crick in it that had been bothering him since the morning and as he did he noticed something wrong. Anderson wasnt in the tail position. He reached up and qued his comm system. "Anderson where are you? Report."

"Anderson Report!" Smythe repeated when no response came. He suddenly shot bolt upright in the turret as he looked back and realized that Toler and Barnes were both missing from the rear points as well.

Inside the sealed cockpit the Motor Viper scanned around her but couldnt find anything out of the ordinary in the low light of the later afternoon.



Round 3

Reaper will continue to sneak to the other rear cobra trooper her stealth roll 9/7 +2, 3, 3, 7 16 not as sneaky this time around but that -2 downshift means they cant even roll

Shell takedown attack the Trooper 8/4 2, 4, 3, 7 = 12 is spot on to the troopers toughness which is a success. She takes him down for 1D4 (2 minutes)

The Cobra Officer well spend one of their story points to allow them to not spot her but to roll to see if theirs trouble

Cobra Officers Alertness check 8 +4 = 12 Critical success the officer is alerted to possible danger alerts the others they get alertness DC 15 checks to spot any danger

the Cobra Troopers Alertness check 8 +2 10 nope
the HISS driver 12+2 = 14 nope not aware of anything

Reaper remains unseen

Initiative kicks in
The shout of alarm caught Reapers ears and she cursed silently. Realizing that the Jig was up and it was time to clean up the party and rejoin her team she went hot. as the patrol approached the two troopers made the mistake of slipping out in front of the tank and as they did she stepped out and shouldered her SMG and lets loose with two hard bursts which dropped both Troopers like bad habits. She didnt stand still though she turned on her heel and dove behind the cover of a low ridge,

Smythe saw the carnage the Lown shadow obviously one of the accursed GI Joes whod foolishly stayed behind to try to delay them. "COBRAAAAA!!" he roared the battlecry which was drowned out by the louder roar of the twin fire linked 90 MM Reaper cannons which tore up the area in front of the tank. Smythe qued the comms and yelled at the Driver " Theyre there!!." he yelled pointing where hed just fired "Find her!!"

The Moto Viper tried to see what he was yelling at but all she could see was smole and flames from the wild barrage of cannon fire which to her eyes hadnt hit anything other than grass.

Round 4

Reaper goes first shell go hot and open up with her silenced SMG gaining her sneak attack edge. Shell use a free action to aim giving her one more upshift and which cancels the down shift for the cone Auto fire, her targeting roll to hit the two troopers who are in the cone 14/14 +1, 4, 6 = 20 a crit for 4 damage to one, and a 14/2 +2, 1, 4 = 18 Hit for 3 damage she Defeats both of them, in one burst

Shell use her free action from her mobility feat to hide her infiltration test 17/14 +1, 4, 5, 8 = 25 Critical success. Shell use the success to reposition herself near the Rocket launcher

The Officer is still unable to see her so hell activate his battle plan to try to get a +2 upshift to the motor viper to see if they can find their stealthed nemesis.

The motor vipers alertness check untrained means a snag and with the -2 downshift he gets to roll 2/d20 his roll a 2/12 is a massive fail she sees nothing.
Reaper whipped through the trees like a wolf before she came to where she was heading she scooped up the Rocket Launcher slipping the control pack onto her back. She scrambled up the tree like a spider and braced herself. She hefted the launcher to her shoulder and took aim. A quick press of her thumb released the rockets safety function and another activated the laser targeting scope which locked onto its target. the HISS tanks engine compartment.

Smythe kept pulling the trigger firing in random directions while the pilot tried to steady the vehicle but still couldnt find their attacker. then something gleamed in his eye as he looked his eyes narrowed and then widened and he yelled into the comms in sheer panic. Now he knew what had happened to Anderson and his launcher.

their enemy had it and it was aimed at him.

"GET US OUT OF HERE NOW NOW!!!" he shrieked in terror. the HISSs engine roared and its tracks ripped the ground up as they found traction. but before it could get anywhere there was a whomp and a high-pitched shriek as the rocket launcher fired its round which howled like a banshee across the fields where it whipped upwards and to smythes panicked eyes grew larger and larger before it dove with a final howl of its engine and slammed into the HISSs top armor.

Reaper watched as the HISS exploded into a ball of fire with a massive WHOOOMP. the concussion reached her causing her hood to flutter slightly the skull like mask had no exression but she was grinning none the less. She didnt celebrate the loss of life no but she knew shed done what she had to to save her team and to complete the mission,

Now one last part remained she tossed the rocket launcher and lept down from the tree landing easilly before she took off at a sprint heading for the coast and the designated pick up point.

Mission Complete

Round 5

Reaper will grab the AT Launcher shell spend a story point to gain access to the launcher and use it. Shell Aim as a free action and make sure she has the high ground by firing from a tree branch. for +2 upshift to her targeting and another shift for the size of the tank, for a +3 up total, which is further helped by the launchers lock on laser targeting function which gives her an edge for the roll.

Her targeting Roll is a Natural 20/14 +1, 3, 4, 8, 7, 7 which hits = for a 28 and a critical. the damage is 2+2 for the critical +2 for the over hit. for 6 damage which ignore the HISS armor

the HISSs brawn check at DC 14 its roll 3+3 a 6 is a failure and BOOM the HISS goes up in a ball of flame.

The Officer and Pilot need DC 14 athletic checks the officers D4 check 11 +2 = 13 a failure, the motor viper untrained 5/15 is a failure as well.

So both the officer and pilot go with it.

So this time stealth was king. Reaper won by thinning the herd fast and then when the time came using the weapons provided to end the battle with a nice critical hit. this was fun to roll up and work to write up but I think id really like to try a game some time soon

yeah thats not absolutely terrifying or anything someone who when they want to CANNOT be seen or detected and who can pop up practically from nowhere and if youre in 60 feet of her either kills you with neary 12+ whatever weapons worth of damage she does or can render you unconcious for 1-4 minutes and then begone before you awaken with none the wiser.

A few minor boosts here and there as i gave her some perks which ill give any players and some health boosts but beyond that shes spot on at her level of advancement. which is nightmare fuel if youre a player and shes hunting you :shock:

New Factions book announced for GI Joe as well as Transformer for the Decepticons source book lots of new exiting things coming down the pile everyone

An interesting thought came up in the renegdes discord because someone there wanted to do a MASK game and interestingly enough it hit me that a MASK game using the Essensse rules would literally be the same as the gi joe rules as the two series are functionally identical in most ways

you choose the roles and focuses

you equip the heroes with battlegear and with the MASK themselves

and then make a vehicle that can transform to cover that aspect of the show

then add in weird sci fi adventures and such as VENOM tries to aquire one McGuffin or another to make money or take over the world

and voila episodic but doable MASK

It's probably not that hard to do Visionaries with Power Rangers, either, though you might want to wait for the MLP version of the game just to be sure.
