I fell asleep at the keyboard last night, so will get a wrap up for like and Jake tonight. In their current inebriated state, they aren't in a place to verbally fight back.

I forgot the team chose to add Personnel to their HQ after the first adventure, so technically there is a small staff of support people.

I know that's not why Luke was assigned these duties; I'm just clarifying on my previous comments.

PP 155

Image

Age 28

Background

Cody grew up in his early years simple enough in New York City back in the 1920's. His parents ran a prosperous catering business with clientele from normal people to the ultra rich. In his early youth, he'd read about pulp heroes doing fantastic things and hear his parents talk about gangsters bootlegging. For Cody, it all seemed so exciting and he longed for that kind of excitement plus doing good like the heroes he read. With the other kids, he would play action hero vs gangster or noble gangster vs rogue cops. By all accounts, he was a well rounded kid with a stable home.

In fifth grade, his grades took a marked improvement. He was always a B student no mater how hard he tried. Suddenly, he was getting everything right and becoming the top student in his class. At first his teachers thought he was cheating, but it became clear he wasn't. When they asked his parents, Cody's parents didn't have a clue since high intelligence didn't run in either families line. Professors who taught high level theoretical math were bought in and Cody was able to converse with them like a peer. Some of the sharpest minds quizzed him and he aced all the questions. Normal school just wasn't cutting it for him. So, his parents found a boarding school for gifted students. When the evaluator showed up, it took all of 10 minutes for him to offer Cody a full ride scholarship to the upstate New York school.

At the school, Cody's eyes were opened up to a world he had only read about in pulp magazines. People with powers did exist and he was one of them. The school administrators promised to teach him to harness his gifts for the betterment of mankind. Other students also exhibited gifts such as telekinesis, limited teleportation, enhanced strength, and things of the like. Cody's gifts were discovered to be an increased mental processing ability and mental powers. Combined with having a magnetic personality, the school tailored his curriculum on enhancing his mental aptitude's plus personable skills. Soon, he was one of the most popular kids in school, helped by his ability to intuitively understand people. Peter Floyd, a student with the ability to mind jump, flaunted his power and pushed other kids around. One day, Cody got tired of it and exposed that Peter was still a bed wetter. From then on, the other kids just weren't intimidated by him.

Come graduation day, his class mates were abuzz. It was the post graduation day trip coming up before returning to their parents. The previous year was Cuba and this year was going to be Hollywood. They'd get to fly in a private plane and everything with full catering. Previous students who had come back to the school to speak raved about their trips and the exotic locales they'd visited. After graduation and kissing their parents good bye, the students boarded the plane. It was the last time anyone who speak to the class of 100 students for a long time.

On the plane, stewardesses brought drinks around before take off and naturally all the students toasted. After they all quickly fell asleep, men in white lab coats went through the plane injecting students with Compound P. It was a new serum meant to enhance someones natural powers and make them loyal soldiers. Previous versions of the serum focused on the loyalty, but version P was meant to enhance power as well. It took a week or so to mix in the students systems, just long enough to have visited "Hollywood". Memories would be implanted later. When the sleeping students arrived at the underground hibernation pods in a secret compound in the Catskills mountains that only a few in The Horde, the secret backers of the school, knew about they were put into hibernation while the serum did it's thing.

During the week the students were gestating, a band of masked heroes followed by the government raided the school. Those who knew of the Catskills compound all died in the assault or fled never to be seen or heard from again. It was all over the news of a secret Horde school and the group of 100 missing students. Former students were revealed to be part of various Horde plots around the world and rounded up with the intention of reprogramming them. For the parents of the 100 missing students, they died not knowing what happen to their children.

Nine years before the invasion, hikers were hiking in the Catskills and came across a strange door. Time had weakened it to the point of them having no problem getting it open. Inside they found 100 hibernation pods of mostly old men and women with some of them dead. A few pods had younger people or not so aged ones. When Aegis and the government arrived on the scene, it was quickly recognized they were the 100 students who fell prey to faulty pods. 15 had died of old age and the serum having negative effects. 60 were alive, but aged to the point of any powers they might have had diminished greatly. 25 were found to either be still powerful or younger. Cody and Jumper stood out amongst the 25. Jumper's powers were stronger than ever and he immediately jumped into other bodies to escape Aegis. Cody was also stronger than ever plus youthful to boot.

The 60 who were no threats were taken care of in a home under the watchful eye of Aegis who ensured they weren't a future Horde threat. For the other 24, they were brought to a camp with each monitored and tested. Most exhibited minor powers, but not boosted much due to a combination of age and ineffective pods plus serum combination. They displayed a loyalty to The Horde when questioned. So, Aegis kept an eye on them and brought in counselors plus others to try and break the hold.

Cody was the only one who didn't show any loyalty to The Horde. In fact, he was shocked it hadn't registered before to him. School guards around the area were robots sort of similar to what the Horde used. A lot of the "good" he was taught centered on manipulation of people and finding out what made them tick utilizing his powers under the premise of talking down criminals or infiltration. Other students had learned combat or infiltration skills as well as it befit their powers. Games were in hindsight clearly constructed to model situations they might engage with heroes or adversaries with all the fall out from the engagements. This all rushed to Cody quite quickly. He felt his mind working much faster than it ever had. Counselors brought in told him that there was something in his blood that had enhanced his natural mutation to the point of unlocking much more of his minds potential. Based on their thoughts, they hadn't a clue what it was.

Over the course of the next year, Cody trained on the usage of his new powers and worked to convince the Aegis staff he wasn't like the others. Whatever got enhanced in him fought off the control element of the serum. Reports filtered into the camp of someone stealing bodies and causing mischief reminiscent of Jumper back in school days. Women would wake up in bed next to other women or men without any idea how they got there. Someone's accounts would have been drained. Some would wake up with nasty hang overs. None of it helped Cody in convincing Aegis he wasn't a threat.

Finally, after a year, he managed to convince Aegis he could be set free. They released him, on an unspoken condition Cody picked up on, they would be watching him. To get him going with a new life, they set him up with a place in New Orleans and a full ride to LSU plus room and board. He picked up enough at the school within in weeks to convince him to ditch the school and work for a PR firm. It was fun work for a year or so and he got to travel a bit meeting all sorts of people. Some of the less reputable even tried to get him to become part of their organization, but Cody kept on the lawful side of things and just did the PR work. It wasn't fulfilling work though. All of the women, booze, fine dining, and travel on private jets was fun, but it didn't feel like what the pulp heroes of his youth would do. He also struggled to fit in with modern times.

Sensing from one of the agents Cody knew was following him there was some Aegis openings, Cody approached the befuddled agent who did their best to act not Aegis like until Cody convinced him to drop the act. The openings were in the area Cody excelled at which was people management. Specifically, peoples perception and spin. It was a job Cody was a super star at given his powers plus it didn't hurt he could get into scraps usually winning with his powers if needed.

Multiple times he was offered promotions, but he knew what they entailed. Teams of PR or hostage negotiators he would run. Leadership wasn't his bag and in his position he was able to track and do his best to container Jumper. Jumper took notice of Cody and tried to make life hard for the former rival, but Cody's mental powers could suss out Jumper most of the time. Never an outright villain, Jumper just wanted to be the top dog who could bully people for his own ends. So, he wasn't on others radars as much. A promotion would mean Cody couldn't track Jumper as much. Another luxury of Cody's role was he didn't need to conform to modern tastes as much. Strutting around like a 1920's gangster with swagger mixed with pulp hero just became part of his brand.

When the invasion came, Cody suited up and helped Aegis fight it off. In the ensuing budget cuts, his position got eliminated. So, he took up freelancing and side hero work until Aegis pulled him back in to help sell the four super team approach.

Complications:
Motivation(Do Good): Cody is driven to do good for the world, despite what he was subtly trained to do. He might mess about sometimes, but in the end he is just trying to have fun while doing what is for the best.
Motivation(Thrills): To a point, Cody is in the hero business for the thrill of it.
Enemy(Jumper): Jumper was a body swapping bully back in school who Cody took down a peg. Jumper aka Peter Floyd has never let it go.
Prejudice(Former student of The Horde): Cody is a former student of one of Hordes feeder schools back in the day. Despite not being aware, until pointed out later, peoples views of him are tainted.
Quirk(Man Out of Time): He was raised in the late 1920's to 1940, so some of his references might be out of date. he also tends to shun technology.

Personality

He has the swagger of 1920's gangster with the thrill seeking attitude of the pulp heroes. He's mostly adjusted to the times, but fights against giving up old ways such as pen and paper or type writers. He understands new technology easy enough plus any of the other sciences, but just prefers the old ways. Generally, he's a fun guy to be around knowing just enough to not break Aegis rules which he has mesmerized.
