Created by:
Michael W. Bennett, Lee Stevens & Andrew Currie
First Appearance: Super-Soldiers #1 (April 1993)
Group Affiliations: The Super-Soldiers
Role: Nosy Reporter

-Sarah was a "subversive"- a nosy reporter- and allied with Hauer on his escape from his holding facility. She was researching the "Super-Soldiers" project and the mysterious deaths surrounding it, and the two formed the new team, with her as a hacker/information specialist. She was booted from the team in the final issue, as they wanted only superhuman members as part of the Mercy Corporation's grouping, but she researched it for Hauer. She has never reappeared.

Complications:
Responsibility (The British Government)
Enemy (Joseph Hauer, Dalton)- Childs murdered most of his teammates, and tried to kill these two as well. Hauer in particular wants revenge.
Addiction (The Rush)- Childs is a psychopath addicted to the rush of adrenaline, which provokes him into killing frenzies.
Temper ("The Red")- Like Nuke, Childs sees "Red" when excited, turning him into a violent, hyper-aggressive warrior. The "White" brings him down, while the "Blue" helps keep him steady once the rush wears off. These all happen as automatic biological processes.

Total: Abilities: 68 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 4 / Defenses: 8 (109)

-Lee Childs was the leader of the initial Super-Soldiers team that included Hauer & Dalton- like them, he was on the Nuke-like internalized pills, but unlike them, he had gone fully addicted to the rush of the "red" and was a psychotic killer. Having a mental break on a mission, he killed everyone but Dalton & Hauer, then went back to England and got a new squad of guys, the "Super Squadies". He was teamed up with U.S. Agent and sent back to Thailand to kill a returned Hauer. He turned on the Agent and sent the Squadies after everyone, but they were all killed (with Gog turning to the heroes' side). His own adamantium knife was used to cut off his hand- he barely escaped Hauer's wrath with his life, but ended up crushed by an oncoming train.

-Childs is effectively a crazed, less-effective version of Hauer, but has an adamantium knife that pushes him to PL 9 territory.

Warheads

THE WARHEADS
Created by:
John Freeman, Nick Vince, Gary Erskine & John Beeston
First Appearance: Warheads #1 (June 1992)
Role: Mercenaries

-Warheads was a strange early book in the Marvel UK line, and seemed to be the one most based around MyS-TECH, who ended up being the signature villains of the little world. The Warheads themselves were various groups of mercenaries hired by MyS-TECH to invade different dimensions, alien worlds, and more, and they got a cut of the profit when they were done. Militaristic and very, VERY "British", they were typically comprised of ragtag bands of weirdos, steampunk-looking gatling-gun-toting medics, female psychics with metal tops but nothing but panties on below, Tank Girl wannabes in giant power armor, etc.

-Warheads seems to consist of random missions going here and there- a central character was Tigon Liger, commander of "Kether Troop", who had his face scarred by Wolverine in the distant past. They faced monsters, a world of cat monsters, a woman who tried to feed them to her children, and even X-Force in a crossover. The book was said to be "Star Trek-like", as the established characters would survive while newbies and trainees tended to bite it straight away to establish the threat.

-Meanwhile, some other books featured "Warheads" as Mooks- Dark Angel & Motormouth both faced them. Warheads #14 was the last issue, leading to Kether Troop quitting MyS-TECH- Liger & Stacy Arnheim were both recruited onto the Time Guardian's "Dark Guard" in that final Marvel UK series, as most of the books each added a member to that eight-person squad. However, Stacy is killed trying to flee their recruiting room, falling into "No-Space", and appears later with no memory of what happened.

Roster:

Image

MISHA BUSHIDA: Psi-Scout. Tends to "feel things" or anticipate threats... so she's pretty much Deanna Troi. Wears white panties and a metallic top.
GUILLERMO PEREZ: Medic. Killed by demons in Mephisto's realm in Warheads #10.
ALEXIS CALE: "Retriever". Killed by Wolverine on a mission to Madripoor.
STACY ARNHEIM: "Troop Defense". A blonde woman wearing gigantic power armor, she appears in only some minor stuff, but is recruited onto the "Dark Guard" with Liger... only to break free and try to escape where the Time Guardian brought them to, and falls to her death. However, she reappears shortly, albeit with no memory of her allies.

Image

TIGON LIGER: Named after two kinds of lion/tiger hybrids, Tigon Liger is the unit leader of Kesher Troop. He never seems to run into too much trouble, and survives all of their crazy missions, and is even part of the group recruited onto the Time Guardian's "Dark Guard". He seems to be there pretty much just to have a Warheads character on it, as he doesn't do anything.
OTHERS: New members seem to be added on every mission. Most die in their first adventure- when Wolverine kills Cale, he also kills two newbies, for example. Most of them die in Mephisto's realm eventually.

So I would guess…Stamina of Vulcan (who works tirelessly), Speed of (a) Centaur, Strength of Thor, cunning of Mars (as opposed to Solomon’s wisdom), ferocity of Ajax (in contrast to courage of Achilles), power of Neptune (who did rule the seas, after all). So when Davey Doddsworth says the word VCTMAN he transforms in a torrent of hurricane winds and water into Captain Might.

All my best.
Dear greycrusader, please be assured that I’m absolutely delighted to share some speculation with you - it’s been far too long since the last time we did that and I can only apologise for being an absentee correspondent for so long.😊

Concerning your notions, I really love the mental image of that transformative waterspout: I’m also extremely happy to deploy young Mr Doddsworth when asked for a person behind the magic word (though may I suggest “MIGHT MAN” as his codename? - just bellow it in the most cheerfully OTT growl you can summon up and I think you’ll understand the appeal) and more than a little intrigued to see your ‘List of Powers’ for VCTMAN.

My own notions (based on the same qualities as may be observed in the SHAZAM powers, just to keep things simple) were:-

- The Endurance of Vulcan
- The Wisdom of Centaur (aka Chiron)
- The Power of Thor
- The Speed of Mars
- The Courage of Ajax
- The Strength of Neptune

It’s amusing to note that we both took one look at Vulcan and thought “This dude survived being thrown from Mount Olympus, making a pass at Athena AND booby-trapping Venus & Mars, he must be hella tough!” - We also seem to agree that Ajax is the logical counterpart of Achilles (for my money a man gutsy enough to fight the Trojan War without a scrap of aid from the Twelve Olympians and talk big about doing so has no lack of guts, whether or not his common sense can answer “Present & Correct”).

My personal identification of ‘Centaur’ with Chiron, wisest of Centaurs and trainer of heroes, was based on the notion that all this muscle needed some serious brainpower to marshal it (whether the brain that provided it got the respect it deserved or not) and on the idea that, having been friend to and accidentally murdered by Hercules, Old Chiron might welcome the Olympic Games of the Gods as a way of settling scores.

One should also admit that my placement of Thor & Neptune was purely for the sake of making a shout-out to the OTHER set of Marvels. I make no apologies, for in this I have not one particle of shame.😉

Thank You most kindly and be warned - I have taken the Liberty of sending a few other ideas to you via Private Message, so as not to idly clutter Jabroniville’s nice thread.

MyS-TECH

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

MYS-TECH
Created by:
John Freeman, Nick Vince, Gary Erskine & John Beeston
First Appearance: Warheads #1 (June 1992)
Role: Evil Magi-Tech Group, Secret Conspirators

-If you were one of those subjected to the works of Marvel's UK branch in the early 1990s, then you were going to see some mentions of MyS-TECH somewhere along the line. Their backstory was that they were a group of seven wizards who made a deal with Mephisto in the late 900s AD for power and immortality- Mephisto let them become ageless, but they had to give him a steady stream of souls. In the end, they became a powerful multinational corporation with a secret HQ in the Canary Wharf section of London, traveling through both time and space to gain both great technology and magic. The created a "Voodoo Doll" version of the ENTIRE PLANET called "Un-Earth", created the assassin known as Killpower via genetic engineering, and had their fingers in most Marvel UK series, such as Death's Head II, Motormouth & Killpower (Motormouth swiped some of their gear, and then their assassin), Dark Angel (about one of their former operatives' daughter, who was now fighing them), and Warheads (which was about their mercenary wing engaging in interdimensional shenanigans).

-MyS-TECH had intended to escape Mephisto's influence and break their pact- one was attempting to KILL Mephisto, while others were attempting to sacrifice entire planets all at once to "pay off" their debt. It seems that each writer in the Marvel UK franchise had their "own" Board Member to use, as each book tended to use a different one as the leader of whatever villainous scheme was going on. Tyburn appeared helpful in Dark Angel, Wychwood took the lead in the "Gene Pool" books (Genetix, Gene Dogs), Rathcoole was mostly about in Warheads, and Porlock came out of nowhere as the main villain in Shadow Riders. This leads to some funny stuff where a book is cancelled early and so you see that Board Member vanish for ages.

-Their story culminated in MyS-TECH Wars, an event that saw a lot of established Marvel superheroes killed (I read the first issue as a kid, and was shocked to see SPIDER-MAN get his heart torn out, then get devoured by demons!), but the day was saved thanks to Dark Angel using six assembled heroes to act as "Stand-Ins" for the original seven MyS-TECH members, and heal the rift in reality to Un-Earth. The event was then erased from time, scaling back everything. Later, MyS-TECH attempted to destroy all super-heroes, but are beaten by Death's Head II. Things end when Mephisto frees up all of his magic & energies from helping them, thus getting out of his contract. Researching this group is a bit difficult, as the horrible Marvel UK creative teams had somehow managed to create a convoluted story in only two-to-three years' time, and even the Unofficial Handbook guys are a bit stunned by all of the mess.

-I honestly have no idea how powerful any of these guys are supposed to be- given the name, it's quite clear they're masters of technology AND magic- Techno-Wizards of vague power. Most of their stuff doesn't seem to happen via fighting, but by manipulations, magic spells, and business.

The MyS-TECH Board:

Image

ALGERNON CROWE: A mage who tended to lead things in Dark Angel and Motormouth & Killpower, often sending agents against them. He seemed to be an overall leader, or at least the "face" of the organization, but could himself be replaced by the board, or lectured by the others.

Image

BRENDAN RATHCOOLE: The manipulative blond man Rathcoole was a backgrounder with Time Control powers (used to keep him unharmed) until taking focus in Warheads, where he plotted the death of Che (before he was spared and ended up leading the Gene Dogs). He ended up manipulating events so that he gained a powerful sword, which he used to try and KILL MEPHISTO! However, the arch-villain was unarmed by his impalement, and taunted Rathcoole with the knowledge that the sword he used was merely the "sister" of the blade he needed. Mephisto then teleported Rathcoole to the rest of the MyS-TECH board and told them what he'd done. He was then tortured by them for this act of betrayal, as they removed his eyes and one of his hands. Later, he ordered some Warheads to find the proper sword. However, it was learned that Mephisto's son Blackheart had been responsible for manipulating him (he was trying to usurp his father), and so he was forgiven. He disappeared into the background after that.

Image

RANULPH HALDANE: The father of Shevaugh, the Dark Angel. He is attempting to finagle a means to allow MyS-TECH to be free of their debt to Mephisto, but the villain murders him for attempting to get out of their pact. He dies in the opening of her series, and her investigations uncover much of what MyS-TECH is doing. His soul fragment is occassionally seen in Dark Angel, as she deals with her family's past.

Image

BRONWEN GRYFFN: A dark-haired old woman with aerokinesis, flight & invisibility powers. She was often seen as a mere backgrounder, often lecturing Crowe about something.

Image

EADMUND PORLOCK: A man with glass lenses over his eyes, he was a backgrounder in a few books, never really doing much, but became the central villain of Shadow Riders, leading groups against those heroes. Taking a demon form, he was quite powerful, but the Riders escaped, leaving Porlock looking bad to his peers.

Image

GUDRUN TYBURN: A blonde/brown-haired woman who is frequently seen as a secret ally of Dark Angel, among others- she knocks out Gryffn at one point, sparing Dark Angel's life in the process. However, she attempted to kill Motormouth, and the Dark Angel stuff doesn't appear to be explained. She as telekinesis and vast regenerative powers (resurrecting after being blown to pieces by Motormouth's sonic scream, and after being sliced in half by Death Metal).

Image

ORMOND WYCHWOOD: One of the least-used MyS-TECH board members, Wychwood was an elderly-looking man with psychic powers. He was shown overseeing the "Gene Pool" characters, but only took a personal stake in Knights of Pendragon, where his attempt to summon the Red Lord failed.

Other Agents:
GADAFEL: A drooling fat guy who adored the psionic energies of suffering.

JAMES BURNETT: A random scientist.

Image

THE SISTERS OF GRACE: A group of female warriors in white bodysuits sent against Black Axe. A rapid creation because the Warheads were being drawn in but the creators were suddenly told not to use them. An, Dorrit & Tella showed no powers. Ness appeared to be a cyborg with a vice arm. Esta was 20 feet tall (hnnggghhh...) and very board, taking Black Axe's blast like it was nothing. Jessie had elongated claw-fingers.

SIDNEY FISHBURNE: A scientist who built the Chronifact based off of his suggestions on how to control time's flow. The Time Guardian stole it from him, and he sought to get it back.

-Others who've already had profiles are the Warheads, Tektos, Dr. Oonagh Mullarkey, Magpie, Collapsar, Skire & Dolph. Plus Dark Angel faked being part of them for a while, and Killpower was once their assassin.

I like how everyone is standing in the exact same pose, as if the artist traced it and simply changed the proportions and sizes.

Wait...was just one of them supposed to be giant-sized, or were FOUR of them huge? Or is it just that the artist was really bad with perspective? I guess from what was stated by the artist, it was a rush job to come up with them and re-do the pages to replace the Warheads characters.

Let me guess-they've never reappeared ever.

-Gun Runner was the last "Gene Pool" creation, lasting six issues. An alien, he was an athlete turned into a super-soldier, but was put into suspended animation for centuries, popping up on contemporary Earth. There, he was amnesiac and befriended a human woman and fought Ghost Rider & Johnny Blaze, along with some mobsters, but teamed up with the heroes in the end. His old enemy Shakata (whom he thought he'd killed) arrived in a cloned body and caused another fight. Brell was captured, but escaped and re-formed his old crew- Shakata nearly destroyed the Earth with a weapon that would force it into a blank, empty dimension that'd make everyone comatose, but Brell ultimately killed him after most of his old team was killed. Gun Runner was thus cancelled, with his human buddy Gale joining him on his further space adventures. A little-seen character, he last appeared during Annihilation (written by his creators), being subjected to the Annihilation Wave, albeit with green skin for some reason. It's unknown whether or not he survived.

-Gun Runner is a basic, fairly-strong character with a lot of blasters and stuff.

-haha, oh man- these guys are so bad. The Zoo are the agents of Shakata, the main villain of the short-lived Gun Runner series. They're hyped as "The last creatures in the cosmos you want to know", but they lose their first fight. Recovering, the escape and regroup for a last battle a few issues later. There, they battle Gun Runner's fellow "Enhanced" super-athletes, and apparently meet their end. They appear pretty throwaway, with bad designs even for Sketchpad Characters- like a bunch of deformed-looking monsters and yet another "shiny-bodied nudist with a flaming head" alien design. They have names like Laz-Fire & Warcrime, too- just AMAZING garbage.

-Described as "The coldest of killers", Ballistik was a gun-wielding fighter. She called Gun Runner's ally Smith a "pig", but was kept from shooting him by the others, who pointed their guns at her. Escaping with the rest of the Zoo, she fought the heroes again, shooting Lure through the shoulder and injured Heavy Duty, but being killed when Lure's special scout Gyre took the direct way through the battle field, flying straight through her chest. She's a generic blaster with some gear.

-Blitz was a tall, lanky four-armed guy who used "zz" instead of "s" in all his dialogue ("yezz, Warcrime"), and was a frenzied fighter, but all his fights consist of heavy one-sided losses on his part. He attempted to kill Gun Runner, but was blasted by Heavy Duty, then in the final battle was knocked over first by Gyre, then run through by Smith via a large trident. So he's apparently "all talk" as a variety of low-end heroes are easily able to kick his ass, then kill him.

-Laz-Fire has both an incredibly '90s name and a horribly swiped appearance, looking like a faceless version of countless flying space characters- Nova from Fantastic Four/Silver Surfer, Comet Queen from The Legion of Super-Heroes, and even by this point Photon of Youngblood- that "Shiny Body, Open Skull with Flared Sides, Flaming Hair" look. But y'know, even LESS detail. In the fights, Laz-Fire was first stymied by Smith, but soon blasted away at him at point-blank range, nearly killing him until Smith fought back, putting them at a standstill. In the second fight, she blasted Lure but was promptly killed by Heavy Duty.

-Laz-Fire is reasonably powerful (hitting PL 7- rare for this crew), but still vulnerable, usually able to be harmed by others.

-Like most '90s groups, the Zoo had a "Strong Guy"- the huge, mute Payload, who was twice as tall as any other character and strong enough to hold Gun Runner up in the air with one hand. In the first fight, he held off Gun Runner until he was shot by the other heroes and had to let go. When the heroes fought back a couple issues later, Heavy Duty set up a powerful mine to blow a hole in the enemy ship- Payload picked it up to examine it, at which point it exploded, blowing him to pieces.

-Payload, like a lot of big guys, has a pretty solid offensive PL (I mean, for these dorks), but is pretty easy to hit, and so is only PL 6 defensively. Pretty much any character can shoot him, though he is able to tank it a little bit.

Re: Jab’s Builds! (Black Axe! Dragon's Claws! Super-Soldiers! MyS-TECH!)

Jab, if you were asked to put together a superteam (Say eight strong with four reserve members) from your various builds, may I please ask which characters you would recruit?

I’m tempted to suggest limits on your draft picks, but I trust you to pick a non-munchkin, non-cribbed line up: I will specify that this is a standard save-the-world team, rather than one put together for a more specific purpose.
