Requiem Sharks

Post by Jabroniville »

REQUIEM SHARKS:
-The Carcharhiniformes are also known as Requiem or Ground Sharks, and tend to have elongated snouts- it includes many common types, such as Reef, Whitetip, Blue, Bull, Tiger & Hammerhead Sharks, along with the Catsharks & Houndsharks. They are the most numerous order of sharks by far, mostly thanks to the small, thin Houndsharks & Catsharks- the latter have over 150 species. They largely fit into four size categories (3 feet, 5-6 feet, 7-9 feet, 10 feet +), and I'll stat the famous ones separately- the Catsharks and such will handily fit into the smallest category.

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Fish cannot speak to humans, nor use their fins to easily manipulate objects.
Disabled (Aquatic)- Fish typically will not last long on land- they are borderline immobile, can't defend themselves, and will slowly dehydrate or suffocate.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, these fish are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on these fish effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -24 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 34 / Defenses: 4 (28)

Era: Modern Day
Range: All waters of the Earth.
Stereotypes: Emotionless, blank creatures.
Colouring: Grey, brown.
Size: 2-5 feet long (0-30 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Small groups.
Diet: Small fish (herring, mackerel).
Tactics: Attack in groups or flee.

-Some of the Carcharhiniformes are very small- the Leopard Shark of the houndshark group is one of them- typically 4-5 feet long. The Lost Shark is known from only three specimens, all over 80 years old- the species may well be extinct, but stranger things have happened than something like this turning up again. The adult size is merely a best guess, as only juveniles were found. As well, nearly all of the Catsharks are around this size category- this numerous group is 150-strong and is typically very small.

-Others include the shy Nervous Shark (3-4 feet), Milk Shark (3.5 feet), Blacknose Shark (4 feet), Smoothtooth Blacktip Shark (4 feet), Blackspot Shark (3.5 feet), Indonesian Whaler Shark (1 meter, discovered only in 2012), Creek Whaler (3-4 foot Australian shark), Smalltail Shark (3.5 feet, from South America), Hardnose Shark (3.6 feet), Sliteye Shark (3 feet), Spadenose Shark (2.5 feet), Borneo Shark (2 feet), Pondicherry Shark (3.3 feet) of South Asia, Whitecheek Shark (4 feet), Whitenose Shark (4 feet), Australian Blackspot Shark (3 feet), little-studied Pacific Smalltail Shark (related to the Copper & Sand Tiger Shark, but much smaller), and most of the Sharpnose Sharks (a family of pointy-nosed types), False Houndsharks (including the Gollumsharks, named for the Lord of the Rings character) and Weasel Sharks (slender, 3-4 foot species). Some Houndsharks, including the Sharpnose & Whiskery varieties, are about this size.

-These sharks fit your Dogfish and other types- small, slender creatures usually under 20 lbs. that are of no threat to human beings. They can still make you bleed, but they're quite fragile.

Tactics: Rapid attacks from above or below.

-The skittish Blacktip Reef Sharks are about 5 feet long- though numerous within their ecosystems (where they are usually the most numerous apex predator), they are somewhat Vulnerable worldwide. They will kill fish as large as Tuna. The Blacktip Shark (5 feet) occupies much of the world's coasts. The Whitetip Reef Shark is the only requiem shark that doesn't need to move to breathe- it pumps water over its gills while restingin caves during the day.

-The Night Shark (6.5 feet) is named because it's primarily caught at night. The Graceful Shark (6 feet) is actually tubby and stocky rather than lithe like you'd expect. Also in this size category are the Grey Reef Shark (6 feet), Australian Blacktip Shark (5-6 feet), Daggernose Shark (5 feet), Spot-Tail Shark (5 feet), Finetooth Shark (6 feet) from the eastern side of the Americas, Pigeye Shark (6-8 feet), larger Milk Sharks (typically under 4 feet), and the Snaggletooth Shark (the biggest of the Weasel Sharks). Most will be under 120 lbs.- 70-100 lbs. is typical. Of the Catsharks, only the Nursehound (5 feet) is typically around this size.

-Most of these sharks will eat anything they can catch, including smaller sharks (like Smoothhounds), but will usually target fish, which make up 90% of their diet. They can be quite dangerous to humans, though only one fatality is recorded for ones like the Blacktip Shark, which is responsible for 16% of attacks off Florida.

Encounter Groups: Solitary or small groups of young
Diet: Fish, crustaceans
Tactics: Rapid attacks from above or below.

-Few creatures have proven to be an enemy of man like the Oceanic Whitetip Shark. Despite being small by shark standards, their numbers and aggression make them the shark most likely to attack the victims of shipwrecks. A feeding frenzy largely comprised of these is what killed dozens of sailors when the U.S.S. Indianapolis was sank during the Second World War (many died of exposure, but you can bet that the survivors remembered the sharks more). No less than Jacques Cousteau declared this "the most dangerous of all sharks" due to these factors. They are now Critically-Endangered- once very numerous (said to be the most numerous animal on Earth in a 1960s study), its numbers have dropped greatly as a commercially viable shark.

-A mid-tier shark, the Oceanic Whitetip hits PL 6. It's extraordinarily-dangerous to human beings in the water, since it's, y'know, not our element AT ALL- PL 6 is more than enough to dispatch any unfortunate who ends up there. And remember that there's never JUST ONE- this is the most-likely animal to show up in a feeding frenzy in the ocean.

-The Galapagos Shark (10 feet) is actually found in small dots throughout the globe- it's not that common, but is inquisitive and persistent, and will resist most of the typical methods of getting rid of sharks. Exceptionally large Blacktip Sharks can be 9 feet long, but is usually around half that size and is in the lower size category. Spinner Sharks (9 feet) are fast-moving predators who chase down prey in large groups, spinning vertically through schools of fish- typically not dangerous to people, they can nonetheless be aggressive when food is present. The Silky Shark (9 feet) is a big follower of schools of tuna. Others include the Sandbar Shark (6-9 feet), Caribbean Reef Shark (10 feet), Silvertip Shark (10 feet), Bignose Shark (8-9 feet), False Catshark (10 feet), and the four species of River Sharks, living around Southeast Asia & Australia, inhabiting waterways as young, possibly to avoid predation from larger sharks. Most are 100-200 lbs.- long, but only about as heavy as a man.

-Large requiem sharks are a little smaller than Oceanic Whitetips, hitting PL 6 owing to their human-like size.

-The Lemon Shark reaches 11 feet & 405 lbs. and mostly hangs around the coastlines of the southern oceans. They tend to live near shallow-water mangroves, which are the nursery areas of many species of fish- this may be to give them an abundant source of prey. Sicklefin Lemon Sharks are closely related and even a bit bigger, hitting 12 feet. The Dusky Shark is huge- up to 14 feet and 765 lbs. It circles most of the world's coastlines except in Europe. Nomadic and rare, the females can store sperm for many years before allowing themselves to become pregnant- they have the longest gestation of any animal, tied with the Spiny Dogfish (up to two years). Copper Sharks (11 feet, 600+ lbs.) are slow to mature, not reaching adulthood until 13-19 years of age.

-The large requiem sharks are a little bigger than Oceanic Whitetips, hitting PL 7 offensively & PL 6 defensively.

Tactics: Chase or surprise attack and bite savagely.

-The most widespread vertebrate on the planet, the Blue Shark inhabits all known oceans outside of the cold regions of the poles. Not generally dangerous to humans (4 dead out of 13 attacks over a few hundred years), and it doesn't do well in aquariums (a few were doing okay until some genius added BULL SHARKS to the lot... the Bulls ate the Blues). Though often fairly large, truly huge specimens are known, with the normally 400-lb. animal sometimes having nearly 900-lb. specimens!

-Blue Sharks are PL 6 predators that are a good bit stronger than most of the other requiem sharks, a bit bigger than the Whitetips. They are dangerous and quick, but will falter against the true Apex Predators of aquatic regions, including other Sharks. These stats will adequately reflect the Sharks between the small-ish Whitetips, and the heavy Bulls.

It’s generally taken to be oceanic whitetips:
"Ocean of Fear", a 2007 episode of the Discovery Channel TV documentary series Shark Week, states that the sinking of Indianapolis resulted in the most shark attacks on humans in history, and attributes the attacks to the oceanic whitetip shark species. Tiger sharks may also have killed some sailors. The same show attributed most of the deaths on Indianapolis to exposure, salt poisoning, and thirst/dehydration, with the dead being dragged off by sharks.[30]

-The Bull Shark is a horrific shark, but a good example of the overall type- over ten feet long and between the 400 and 1,000-pound mark, it represents a lot of other sharks in stats. This one stands out for also swimming up RIVERS, where it has been responsible for several provoked and unprovoked attacks on humans (and is the top suspect for a very famous series of attacks on the Jersey Shore in 1916- Sharks braving freshwater is one thing, but JERSEY? That is BALLS). Bull Sharks are named for their stocky body frame and aggressive, unpredictable behavior. Their predilection towards freshwater has led them up the Ganges, Tigris, Potomac and other rivers, and even ended up stranding a few of them on an artificial lake in an Australian golf course! Naturally, the course capitalized on the novelty and left them there, hosting monthly "Shark Lake Challenges". They are among the only fish (and definitely only sharks) who can so easily traverse between salt and freshwater.

-Bull Sharks are elite hunters, making PL 7 all over, which puts them on the elite track of predators, but on the bottom end of it- the larger predatory sharks are all a notch or two above. Typical females will only weight 390 lbs. or so and are likely a notch or two less durable and strong, but they still maintain the 12-point array of Senses and a powerful bite- they actually have the strongest bite, pound for pound, of all sharks.

Tactics: Chase or surprise attack and bite savagely.

-The famous Tiger Shark is the second largest of all predatory sharks, and has the widest food spectrum of all, taking nearly anything it can bite- turtles, fish, pinnipeds, sea snakes, dugongs, dolphins, etc. They are the shark by far most likely to have consumed human trash by accident, as well, as any number of things have been found within their stomachs (popular items include cans, baseballs, tires and allegedly once a suit of armor!). Being so large, Tiger Sharks are among the few predators that can take Leatherback Turtles and other huge marine reptiles, actually showing a preference for such prey (20% of all Tiger Shark stomachs studied contained turtle).

-Inhabiting regions that tend to bring it into contact with humans, Tiger Sharks are the #2 most likely shark to attack after the Great White. They like shallow reefs, river mouth runoff points, and canals, all likely to create human interaction. However, its bite rate is quite low considering the huge numbers of human swimmers near Tiger Shark territory, and few victims die- surfing champion Bethany Hamilton was attacked at 13 years old and only lost her arm.

-Tiger Sharks are PL 8 beasts, akin to Lions & Tigers on land. Their mottled skin makes them much stealthier than most large animals, and they swim slowly to enable them to sneak up on prey. +9 Damage is incredible, putting them alongside the biggest of extinct cats, the largest bears, mid-sized rhinos and other giants.

Hammerheads

HAMMERHEAD SHARKS:
-Arguably the most famous of the Ground/Requiem Sharks, Hammerheads are ten species of animals with an iconic "cephalofoil"- the trademark widened head, with an eye on each side. Zoologists still debate about the purpose of this shape, though it seems clear that it allows for binocular vision along the vertical axis- they can see above and below them at the same time; an exceptional bonus in a hunter or a prey species. The widened head also allows for a lot of surface to cover with the ampullae that give sharks their electrolocation power. As such, all Hammerheads have greater Perception than normal. Their mouths, however, are proportionately smaller than that of most other sharks- their prey are more likely to be smaller squids and the like, so they do less damage. Unlike most sharks, Hammerheads often swim in schools, but only during the day- at night, they become solitary hunters.

-Hammerheads exist in a number of sizes- the Great Hammerhead is almost 20 feet long, while others are about 2/3 that, and more still are around 3-4 feet in length. There are nine species in total, all Endangered.

-The Bonnethead (3-5 feet) has a much narrower head than most, largely looking rounded. They are the only omnivorous shark, with seagrass making up 50% of the stomach contents of some animals- they can only partially digest it, however. The Scalloped Bonnethead (3 feet) is rare and little-known. The Golden Hammerhead (4 feet), also called the Smalleye, lives only along the east coast of South America. Critically-Endangered, their golden color wasn't discovered by scientists until the 1980s, as most of them lose their coloration after death (and especially during preservation)- they then took the name fishermen from the Americas had been giving them. Scoopheads (3-4 feet) live around Central & South America- living alongside two larger Hammerheads, it has a different diet to avoid competition, focusing on smaller squid, worms and flounders. Most of these will be 15-20 lbs.

-Male Scalloped Hammerheads (4-6 feet, 60 lbs.) are much smaller than the females- they are the most common of all Hammerheads, occuring nearly worldwide along coastlines. They have a high metabolic rate and give birth to a large number of young (likely owing to the high infant mortality rate). The Carolina Hammerhead is rarely-seen and is an offshoot of the Scalloped- accidentally recorded in the 1960s by a diver, they weren't found to be a separate species until their vertebra were counted in 2013. The Winghead (6 feet) has a ridiculously wide head, up to half the length of its body. It inhabits Southeast Asia & Australia. Very large Bonnetheads fit this size, as well.
