Skates & Rays

Post by Jabroniville »

SKATES & RAYS:

-Skates & Rays make up a "superorder" containing four different orders- Skates, Electric Rays, Devilrays & Shovelnose Rays. They are denoted by oddly flat bodies with skeletons made up of cartilege. Differing little in body plan, they are disc-shaped, with fins encircling their bodies, allowing for much more complicated swimming motions than other fish have. Closely related to Sharks, they have the same rough skin and predatory lifestyle, though are far less infamous or dangerous to humans.

Their mouths are located on the undersides of their body, allowing them to suck up molluscs and crustaceans on the sea floor. Their flat body shapes easily let them hide under even small amounts of sand, and they don't need to keep swimming to breathe like most sharks do. Rays tend to be larger and more colorful than Skates, and give birth to live young. Rays also have long, whiplike tails that can be used offensively.

Skates

A Thornback Ray's "Face". The "eyes" are actually sensory pits.

SKATES:
-Skates aren't dissimilar to Rays, but uniquely have electric organs (which scientists still haven't figured out- it's not used often enough for electrolocation, and may in fact be used for communication) and a "mermaid's purse" egg sac with multiple handles- Rays give birth to live young instead. Skates average a little smaller than Rays, too, and are much less colorful. Skates also lack a whiplike tail for defense. A "Jenny Haniver" is a fake sea monster created by mutilating a Skate carcass to resemble a humanoid shape, as the "faces" of these animals have very "human" dimensions and shapes.

Size: Up to 12 inches across (less than a pound)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or small groups.
Diet: Tiny crustaceans & molluscs.

-Most Skates are quite tiny, and totally harmless to humans. These include the Pygmy Skates, Round Skates (named for their circular appearance), Sandskates, Looseskin Skates, Legskates, the Fanskate, and the Softnose Skates- the latter named to differentiate them from other Skates, which typically have hard snouts. All are very small bottom-feeders who typically attack only largely-inanimate prey. Many can live on the ocean floor.

Rays

Post by Jabroniville »

RAYS:
-Rays are typically much larger than Skates, and occupy more ecological niches. One particular order are the Electric Rays. Another group includes the Wedgefish & Guitarfish, who are typically much more shark-like, splaying out and flattening only at the front. Another group contains more typical rays, such as the Butterfly Rays (which are very wide and have short, threadlike tails), Panrays & more.

A large portion of these are Stingrays, named for the barbed stingers beneath their tails. These are typically non-lethal to humans, as the barbs are QUITE small, but I bet we can all name one particularly famous example of the opposite being true. These include the Eagle Rays, which are open-ocean predators, the smaller Cownose Rays, long-tailed Whiptail Rays, freshwater-living River Stingrays, Round Rays (small, mottled ones), Butterfly Stingrays, the singular and basal Sixgill Stingray, and the Stingarees (a colloquial name for stingrays that are also called "Round Stingrays" for their disc-like shapes). Devil Rays are typically the largest of all Rays, but are among the least understood, aside from the famous and well-studied Mantas. They are deep-sea predators and filter-feeders (the only rays to have evolved in that manner, descending from bottom-dwelling stingrays), and tend to avoid people.

Note that Rays can vary greatly in size, even among the same species. Red & Common Stingrays, for example, are rarely more than three feet long or across, but can reach extremely large sizes (6-7 feet and 24+ lbs.), putting them a size category larger than I have them here.

-Guitarfish are a family of typically-small (3-4 feet long) primitive rays from their own family (Rhinobatidae)- they are named for their widened upper bodies, sort of resembling a guitar shape. They have features of both sharks & rays, and are typical bottom-feeders. There are 30+ species, all in all, most following the same body plan, and are harmless to humans.

one neat thing i remember was i went to Sea World San Diego and while there they had a feed the rays pool. basically a small pool filled with baby or small rays. youd buy a basketful of shrimp and hold some in your hand and stick your hand ontop of or in the water. the ray would slide right onto your palm and literaly eat out of the palm of your hand.

it was the weirdest feeiing when i did it feeling their little jaws nip your palm like that

Yeah, I've noticed a few of those tanks in various places- I think I went to a "touch tank" in Las Vegas. Sadly, the Calgary Zoo only had one for a short time- they had a really bad spate of animals deaths for a year or two, leading to a director resigning, and one big bunch of them included losing an entire tank of rays so some "random thing that happens to fish".

-Wedgefish are typically very elongated rays which look much more like odd Sharks that splay up on the torso area. The African Wedgefish and Giant Guitarfish are the longest, peaking at around 10 feet. The False Shark-Ray is 7-9 feet long and eats various smaller fish, including Moray Eels. Other species, mostly in the Pacific ocean, are around the same size. Some respond well to captivity- Bowmouth Guitarfish have been bred in some aquariums.

-The Wedgefish are extremely heavy predators, but low-level despite their size, mostly preying on much smaller animals and they themselves are easily preyed upon by sharks.
