-Among the largest of the Sturgeons, these 800-1,000-pounders include the Chinese Sturgeon (6-16 feet, 400-1,100 lbs.), White Sturgeon (7-20 feet, 1,800 lbs.), Atlantic Sturgeon (15 feet, 800 lbs.), and the European Sea Sturgeon (20 feet, 880 lbs.). The Chinese Paddlefish, now extinct, fits this tier as well. They still aren't major hunters, but are heavy enough to avoid most predation outside of humans and the largest oceanic predators.

Re: Jab's Animal Builds (Elephantfish! Paddlefish! Sturgeons!)

Post by Jabroniville »

The funny thing about the Sturgeons is like... I WANT to narrow down the builds but there's too much size diversity among the group, lol. So while so many fish end up with PL 0 (15) builds because they're all tiny and generic, I needed like six damn builds JUST for Sturgeons!

I'm also attempting to alternate forgettable fish with more interesting ones, Which is tough, because there's like... SEVENTY MORE builds coming, lol! I mean, it's not as bad as me having to spend a month just posting snakes (there's a reason I did those last of the other vertebrates), but holy crap. I had completed an entire list of orders of fish and then ended up with a bunch of extras, in addition to expanding certain builds when I found more stuff (extra Scorpionfish, Gar, Sturgeons, etc.).

And only after all that do I get to the cartilaginous fish- the Sharks & Rays! Which are of course the only fish builds everyone probably wants to see in the first place, lol.

So yeah, I might be spamming some of these once in a while, especially the generic ones that don't alter the core build very much. Some of these are almost a "cheat" as I built them in mere minutes- like looking up the Sturgeons as a whole took a while as there's 20+ species, but that netted me six distinctive builds in not quite as much work as six would normally take, because all I did was shift around caps.

<shrug> I found the ones about lampreys to be interesting. The notion that they were a prestigious dish at one point genuinely surprised me.

Yeah, there's fun stuff that pops up once in a while, which is part of why I wanted to be thorough with these. That and because I'm nuts.

-The Kaluga & Beluga Sturgeons are among the largest- the Kaluga is 18 feet & 2,200+ lbs., and the Beluga is 20-23 feet and can weigh up to 3,500 lbs!. These two are more predatory, hunting Salmon and other fish in Russian rivers- their sheer size is such that they can even take this large prey despite having little in the way of teeth. The Kaluga spends part of its life in saltwater.

-The Bowfin is a relict- the only remaining species of the Amiiformes, an order that evolved during the Triassic Period. Its closest relatives are the Gars. Like Gars, they can breathe both air and water, and are piscivores. They grow up to about 21 lbs, and are adapted to poor-oxygen waters (they have swim bladders and can gulp air if necessary; this probably helped a LOT of fish survive Global Extinction Events) and various temperatures. Like most ancient fish, they are simply-built but hardy and adaptable. They have distinctive mouths, benig one of the few fish to have an extra set of teeth deep within the throat (pharyngeal jaws), in addition to tons of sharp, tiny teeth up front.

-Bichirs & Reefish comprise the order of Polypteriformes, known for their elongated bodies and dinosaur-like series of "plates"- a series of elevated dorsal fins along their backs. Reedfish sport lungs in addition to gills, allowing them to breathe oxygen from the air in times of oxygen-poor water. They have a much better sense of smell than sight.

-Gar can grow extremely long- the Longnose Gar can be almost 7 feet long and weigh up to 80 lbs., and the Cuban Gar is of similar stature. Longnose Gar are believed to have lived in the United States for over 100 million years- a truly staggering amount of time. The word "primitive" has been used, but is a misnomer, as they are highly-evolved- they simply found something that worked and never changed. Their prey include catfish, bullheads and smaller gar- they will attack anything smaller than themselves.

-Barely 2-6 inches long, the Killifish are a positively gigantic order, containing over 1,270 species across multiple families. They are nearly all freshwater fish, and found worldwide. Among the most limited habitats of any vertebrate belongs to the Devil's Hole Pupfish, a Killifish found in only a single cavern about 300 feet deep in the U.S.

-Squirrelfish & Soldierfish are two families of tiny fish in the order Holocentridae. They aren't very interesting and are kind of "generic"-looking. Most of these are quite nocturnal, with very large eyes- they hide out in crevasses during the day and hunt at night.

Disabled (Aquatic)- Fish typically will not last long on land- they are borderline immobile, can't defend themselves, and will slowly dehydrate or suffocate.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, these fish are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on these fish effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

-The Four-Eyed Fish are notable primarily for being the only vertebrates on Earth to have evolved to possess four eyes. This is because their eyes are on the top of their heads, but divided into two parts (with each eye having two pupils & corneas filtering into one lens), so they can see above and below simultaneously. They are mostly surface-feeders eating tiny animals. There are ony three species in the family, which is part of the order that includes Killifish.
