-Eleven species of snakes about 30-100 cm long, the Hinged Teeth Snakes have hinged maxillary teeth used for crunching hard-bodied prey such as skinks, and even have "fracture planes" in their tails that allow them to break off parts of them, similar to how some lizards can do that. They can't, however, regrow the lost tail parts.

Most-distinctive and famous are the Hognose Snakes, which use their hooked noses to aid in digging. They're all super-tiny, and again PL 0.

Diet: Small mammals, lizards, bird eggs.
Tactics: Flee through trees, strike with venomous fangs.

-Amusing, the BOOMSLANG, which gives its name to the lamest and weakest of the Serpent Society (a guy so jobbery he once lost to common thugs), is actually a very potent snake with dangerous venom. It's spread throughout much of Africa, and has a lethal hemotoxic venom that creates massive blood hemorrhaging in tissues such as muscle and the brain. The venom is very slow-acting, and may not be noticed for hours after the bite, when the victim becomes sleepy and quite ill.

Its "tentacles" sit on the nose, and seem to have a sensory function like a cat's whiskers.

Pit Vipers

Post by Jabroniville »

PIT VIPERS:
-These snakes are named for pits between their eyes and noses that contain infrared sensors, offering them an extra sense to locate and target prey. Most are famous in the Americas- animals such as the Rattlesnake, Cottonmouth, Bushmaster, Sidewinder and Water Moccasin are among their number. All are venomous animals- the venom usually used to disable prey's escape rather than to kill it. It typically causes swelling and pain in larger creatures, but can be fatal in large doses- the venom will necrotize tissue.

As such, these are weak fighters by snake standards, with PL 3 venom.

Venom +4 (+2 Weaken & +4 Affliction, DC 12 & 14)
Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +4 (DC 14), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness -3, Fortitude +1, Will +2

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Snakes cannot speak to humans, and lack the limbs to easily manipulate objects.
Disabled (Cold-Blooded)- Snakes require warm temperatures to heat up and move about- they are fatally-vulnerable to cold.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, small Snakes are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on a Lizard of this scale effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -24 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 50 / Defenses: 8 (50)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Worldwide.
Stereotypes: Soulless, evil, merciless predators.
Colouring: Greens, browns, blacks.
Size: Up to 2.5 feet long (0.5-2 lbs.)
Diet: Fish, birds, rodents.
Tactics: Bite, sometimes using venom to immobilize prey or deter attackers.

-Most of these are about two feet long. These ones feature rather potent venom. Cantils are a variety of Moccasins- one is considered the most dangerous snake in Nicaragua & Mexico, but its fearsome reputation is probably unearned. There are also 3 kinds of Mexican Pitvipers, 3 JUMPING Mexican Pitvipers (which may or may not be able to lash out with such force they actually leave the ground; studies differ), multiple Hog-Nosed Pit Vipers, a few Toad-Headed Pit Vipers, and multiple brightly-colored Palm-Pitvipers. These include the Eyelash Viper, and can and do bite several farmers a year, sometimes killing them. Asia has Mountain Pitvipers of 10-ish species, 3 species of Hump-Nosed Vipers (at least one is quite dangerous, as its bite keeps the blood from coagulating), and 43 Asian Lanceheads.
