Gaius Julius Caesar
IRL History
Power Level 6, 102 PP
Image

Born into a not-too-influential Roman patrician family, Caesar lived a pretty quiet childhood until his aunt married a great rival, Gaius Marius, of the up-and-coming dictator of the day, Lucius Cornelius Sulla. Caesar's young adulthood was defined by becoming head of the family at age 16, then supporting his uncle Marius through a defeat in a civil war, which cost him his fortune at the hands of Sulla and his position in the priesthood as High Priest of Jupiter. To avoid divorcing his first wife, Cornelia, in this moment of crisis, he went into hiding, then joined the army. He vehemently denies having had an affair with King Nicomedes of Bithynia in his early career.

One of the most colorful episodes of his life is when he was kidnapped by Aegean pirates in his 20s. He demanded of his captors that his ransom be upped to 50 talents of silver instead of 20. He was relaxed and familiar with the pirates, and "joked" that after he was ransomed, he would raise a fleet, pursue and capture them, and crucify them alive. Turned out, he did all of that except the "alive" part—in a characteristic act of "mercy," he slit their throats before crucifying them.

Despite his debts, Caesar continued to advance his career as a soldier, a politician, a priest, and a scholar. His overarching tactic is to consolidate power to himself by appeasing the commoners through laws (of taxes, land ownership, citizenship, veteran care, etc.) that favor them at the expense of the aristocracy. Besides maneuvering an alliance with the extremely wealthy and influential Crassus and Pompey, he went to war in Gaul (as a leader of the army) to win fortune and favor that would help him get out of debt. He has been extremely successful in the Gallic wars, minus his failed invasion of Great Britain in the midst.

While he was away at war, his political Triumvirate has collapsed; Crassus died, and Pompey has turned against Caesar, causing the Senate to declare him a public enemy and issue him an ultimatum to step down from his military command and return to Rome. He is about to defy their authority by crossing the Rubicon with his army, saying "Let the die be cast," and starting a civil war for political supremacy.

He will win the war, have an ongoing affair with Egyptian queen Cleopatra, consolidate enormous political power under himself as effective dictator, and issue a number of sweeping legal reforms before being swarmed and assassinated by 60 treacherous Senators on the Ides of March, 44 B.C.
Complications
  • Motivation - Ambition. Caesar doesn't see why he shouldn't accomplish as much as Alexander the Great did. And he is ruthless to those who stand in his way—until he's beaten them, at which point he sometimes shows great mercy.
  • Relationships. Caesar's third wife is Calpurnia, but by Roman standards he is allowed to have other affairs with non-Romans. He is close (for now) with Mark Antony and Marcus Junius Brutus, but secretly favors his sister's grandson Gaius Octavius more.
  • Debts. Caesar has struggled with crippling debt ever since Sulla stripped him of his inheritance and dowry for opposing him.
  • Weakness. Caesar's family has poor cardiovascular health; Caesar himself has occasional symptoms that can be mistaken for epileptic seizures.

Caesar isn't much of a warrior personally; he hits PL6 Normal Defenses, but only because of his Armor and Shield; without them he's a PL3.5 on Normal Defenses. He's PL5 on Offense with a mundane Roman weapon, and has only one Combat Advantage (Weapon Bind). Overall, he's a leader who lets his soldiers do the fighting except in emergencies, but can handle himself well enough to win their respect. Stamina 5 seems high especially with his poor heart health, but then, he did (according to doctors of the time) have the capacity (without his armor) to survive 22 knife stab wounds, if it hadn't been for that pesky 23rd stab (the second one to his chest).

He's a full PL6 on Special Defenses and Expertise: Military.

I can think of no one in all of history that is more deserving of 7 Intellect than Caesar, as defined by far-reaching success in an incredible breadth of Intellect-based Skills. Leonardo da Vinci comes close, but even he didn't impact the world as dramatically through his use of Skills as Caesar.

Nice! Caesar is a tricky one given he’s a historical figure who’s been written about more than anyone alive. And yeah, he was exceptionally skilled, and possibly even better with people. And so good that he permanently destroyed the Republic- you gotta be pretty epic to remove appointed leadership with a royal dictatorship. Hell, his surname was a code for “leader” until the 20th century (Kaiser and Czar/Tsar are modifications of “Caesar”)

He was very good with people (Presence 6), but my impression is that his people skills were still cerebral, using his intellect to manipulate people in logical ways. As opposed to Alexander, who I think despite his INT-based Military/Tactical skills was generally more of a "just overwhelm people with my force of personality" type. So I'm flipping the Intellect and Presence to distinguish the two of them.

Franklin Story Musgrave
IRL History · "Story"
Power Level 5, 102 PP

At age 86 at the time of this post, Musgrave is one of the greatest living renaissance men. Born in 1935 in Boston, he considers Lexington, KY to be his true hometown. His education was delayed by a car accident in his youth, but he's made up for it since with 6 non-honorary higher educational degrees from 6 different universities. (One Bachelor's of the Arts, one Bachelor's of Science, an MBA, one Master's of the Arts, one Master's of Science, and an MD.) He was one of NASA's most experienced astronauts, the only one who did missions on all five Space Shuttles. He is also known (though now retired) as a public speaker, business consultant, heart physician, and hobbyist.
Complications
  • Motivation - Serenity. "It's hard to say what drives a three-year-old, but I think I had a sense that nature was my solace, and nature was a place in which there was beauty, in which there was order."

Alexander the Great
IRL History · Alexander III of Macedon
Power Level 8, 131 PP
Image

Born to King Phillip II of the Greek kingdom of Macedon, but rumored to truly be the offspring of Zeus, Alexander was tutored by the illustrious Aristotle in his youth. He has been awarded generalship of all of Greece, and gradually developed this position into being the effective ruler of all Greece, as well as directing the Greek military to conquer the mighty Persian Empire (which even included Egypt in those days). He has never lost a battle.

He will conquer as far into India as the Beas River before turning back in deference to his homesick troops, then be poisoned and eventually die in Babylon after a short session of consolidating his power there. His mighty, wide empire will then be shattered by a series of civil wars.
Complications
  • Motivation - Ambition. Alexander's competitive spirit drives him to see how much he can outdo his father Phillip.
  • Relationships. Former (estranged) tutor Aristotle; Companions from school, Ptolemy, Hephaistion, and Cassander; and favorite wife Roxana.
  • Temper. Alexander is reckless, brash, and stubborn much of the time, although when calm he likes listening to well-reasoned arguments.
  • Arrogance. Alexander sort of believes he is actually the son of Zeus-Ammon, and is meglomaniacal and paranoid.
  • Addiction. Not good at resisting the lures of alcohol.

Alexander's PLs:
  • 8 on Normal Defenses with Armor & Shield
  • 7 on Skills
  • 6 on Special Defenses and Offense
  • 5 on Normal Defenses without Equipment
Unlike Caesar, he was probably an elite warrior personally, but he fought mostly in phalanx groups, and I didn't want to exaggerate how great a non-superhuman warrior would be. So I limited his PLs to the above.

Taking nominations for this thread, especially women that would be interesting to build.

(I started trying to work on Joan of Arc, but things get weird with "IRL Historical builds" and ostensible divine blessings.)
