The 2014 movie had some odd character changes. Like Vernon is "Vern" Fenwick instead. And how Shredder was going to be the evil businessman, Eric Sacks (since the name sounds like Oroku Saki if it was written as an English name), though this was changed in reshoots and Shredder became a seperate character. ..But at least we didn't get that earlier rejected script where the Turtles were aliens being hunted by a "Colonel Schrader"...

The Rat King

Post by Jabroniville »

THE RAT KING:
-Among the more odd things is that for every single Ninja Turtles comic & cartoon continuity, you find the Rat King- he debuted all the way back in the MIRAGE days, got his own toy and appearance in the 1987 cartoon series, and even shows up for both subsequent cartoons! He's even in the Archie series and video games! This kind of spread is known only to the show's core characters, The Rat King, and Leatherhead. This is primarily because he's one of very few Super-Villains in the series created by the original Eastman & Laird duo- this "Grandfather Clause" ensures that he's part of the core canon, despite being a fairly minor character in the long run. Much is made of his Nightmare Fuel rat-control powers, but every version is EXTREMELY different in origin, powers, and motivation.

Comics Rat Kings:
-In the Mirage series, he's a swamp-living weirdo who randomly encounters the TMNT & Casey Jones. Defeated, he reappears and engages in a long-term spiritual debate with Splinter, who is trapped in the silo where the Rat King lost the first fight- in the end, Splinter, having finally fought his way free of the silo after regaining his strength (on the urgings of the Rat King) finds the decayed corpse of his ally, realizing that he's been dead all along. Later, it turns out that his position is appointed, and the bandages are a sign of his station- a 2007 series reveals that the "Pantheon" exists, with a member for every species of animal. In the Archie books, the Rat King is more of an ally- he agrees to help the Turtles after they prove that they mean him and his rat subjects no harm. He doesn't appear much. Another shows up in the IDW series as a strange manipulator with vast mental powers.

Cartoon Rat Kings:
-In the original cartoon, he's a generic villain with a "Rat-Control" gimmick, with episodes revolving around Splinter resisting his control. He gets a full build below. The 2003 Cartoon uses him as a bio-mechanical super-soldier created by Agent Bishop's technology, using DNA from aliens, the TMNT, Splinter, and himself. Wearing a face-concealing helmet, he was initially called the "Slayer", and sent against the TMNT as a "test run", where he was presumed dead during a flood. Damaged, missing parts, and mutating, he became "The Rat King", as the rats who found him don't fear him, and would follow him into battle. He fought the Turtles again, being defeated by Leonardo.

-The Nick Toon turned him into Dr. Victor Falco, a Mad Scientist voiced by Jeffrey Combs (who played a similar character in The Re-Animator), secretly working for the Kraang and turning his colleague into a Telekinetic Monkey, and himself into a telepath. In his reappearance, he was badly injured when rats chewed on his machines- he was mutated, transforming into the monstrous, decayed-looking Rat King, looking like the New Batman Adventures Scarecrow (also voiced by Combs). Controlling the rats with psionics (he can no longer reach human minds), he controlled Splinter's mind (evoking the 1987 series)- the boys are initially overconfident beacuse they were able to land a blow on him during training... but soon learn that Splinter had been going easy on them all along- he wrecks house until finally breaking free of the Rat King's control and defeating the villain using only two fingers. He reappears vexing Splinter again, but Splinter blindfolds himself to render the villain blind (he was seeing through the eyes of rats), and he falls to his apparent demise. Later, we get an episode where an injured Splinter crawls out of a pit while fighting the Rat King, driven on by thoughts of his late wife and the TMNT... and we see the skeletan remains of Falco on the ground when he comes to- reveailng this as an homage to the aforementioned Mirage Comic- the Rat King is dead.

I like the idea of the Rat King being an appointed postion, mostly so i can say the line; "The king is dead....Long Live The King!" :P

The Rat King (1980s)

Post by Jabroniville »

No one knows for certain where he came from, but one thing is for sure, Rat King revels in scum and scum revels in him. The creepiest of sewer crawlies nest in his royally rotten rags. The self-proclaimed King of the Ratocracy, he hypnotizes his rodent subjects with his seductive flute playing. Even Splinter succumbs to his magical musical powers.

Rat King's army protects his slimy kingdom by fighting tooth and whisker against all outsiders, good or bad. Watch out! Rat on his loyal subjects and you may be wrestling with his Rat Hook or running for your life from Rat King's Royal Ratbow. Rat King's motto is: "First the sewers, then the world!" He and Shredder are battling for total sewer domination while the Turtles are defending their "Home Sweet Sewer" from both. Looks like plenty of trouble underfoot.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 17 / Defenses: 15 (127)

-Naturally, this one-off foe from the comics gets a WAY bigger role in the cartoon series, as a crazed hermit living in the sewers. He's a great inventor (making great gear out of garbage), very strong, and can control the minds of rats, making him a lethal enemy to Splinter and the Turtles. He even controls the TMNT's mentor and forces him to fight his own sons. He is often encountered in odd side-bits, like when he just randomly ended up in the middle of a fight between Shredder and the Turtles, or when Leatherhead went into the sewers and the two began a huge fight that threatened everyone. Occasionally, he has been seen aiding the Turtles, but at other points (such as Night of the Rogues), he allies with former adversaries like Shredder & Leatherhead in order to kill them. Hell, one time he tried to kill everyone in New York! Perhaps because he's a solid "Side Villain", unaccompanied by any others or much plot baggage, he was a regularly-appearing guy, showing up in ten of the series' episodes- a number unmatched outside of the Technodrome crew.

-The Rat King, as a solo villain against the heroes, is actually rather powerful. PL 8 unarmed, and PL 9 with his "Soda Pop Bombs" (pop cans that cause miniaturized explosions powerful enough to knock out Leatherhead in one hit), in addition to being PL 8.5 defensively. His main advantage, however, is his control over massive hordes of rats- not only are most people DISGUSTED by the idea of being swarmed by disease-carrying vermin, but in the show, their swarms seem to have powers akin to "Weaken Toughness"- they're frequently shown tearing through walls, knocking ceilings down on the King's opponents, and more! His Mind Control is only +4 as an Area Effect, but with his Flute, he can control even SPLINTER with his power.

-He's also absurdly-strong for some reason- in Night of the Rogues, he and Slash pick up AN ENTIRE PIZZERIA before throwing it at the heroes! Like, one guy grabs one end, the other guy grabs the opposite one, and they just HUCK it!

Relationship (Leonardo)- Lotus DEEPLY respects Leo, and wishes to run off with him and become Mercenaries For Hire together.
Motivation ("There is little GOLD in goodness")- Lotus is in it for money.

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 29 / Powers: 1 / Defenses: 13 (144)

-Lotus Blossom is quite well-known in the TMNT fandom for a pair of episodes in which she and Leonardo maintained a... somewhat flirtacious relationship. Not as much as Michaelangelo/Kala, but it was definitely there. More of a "Mutual Respect/Let's Run Off Together And Kick Ass" kind of thing. Her debut episode is a bit funny, as right away she's introduced as a Lady Ninja mercenary ass-kicker (with an exaggerated Faux Japanese accent) who easily defeats Shredder, Rocksteady and Bebop in hand-to-hand combat! Krang, it turns out, has hired her to replace the always-failing Shredder, and she runs off the three villains before taking over as Krang's force commander. However, she finds herself nearly drawing with Leo, and develops a respect for him (he is, of course, IMMEDIATELY smitten, despite their interaction only consisting of one fight). Alas, their "Swordfighting" has some of the worst fight choreography I've ever seen- it's just kind of them awkwardly clanging their blades together with their arms stretched out. Also, at one point Bebop's voice comes out of Rocksteady.

-Later, they meet on the field of battle again, and she tries to convince him to run off with her as a "Ninja For Hire", but Leo refuses. In the end, she turns on Krang and teams up with the Turtles, running off to continue as a mercenary. "There is little gold in goodness", she sadly replies to Leo, but hopes that they may meet again some day. There's a pretty easy way to connect Lotus with Karai (who first appeared in comics after this episode came out)- both are Japanese Kunoichi (lady ninjas) who have admirable-rivalries with Leo that are easily-taken for romantic feelings.

-Lotus is a curious example of Power Levels in the series, as she's around Leo's equal, but New Villain Stink has her see off Shredder with a couple of moves- really, she kicks him once, then judo-flips him after he counter-attacks, and he ends up covered in oil. Rocksteady & Bebop soon end up in the same puddle, then covered with FEATHERS (where did she get a PILLOW from?), and Shredders leaves, humiliated. She manages to beat Leo a couple of times, but he's good enough to impress her. And hilariously, despite fighting like a bad-ass, she runs like a "stereotypical girl"- with arms flailing about at her sides.

-At PL 9 (144), Lotus is one of the best fighters in the series, and can hold her own with just about anybody. She's one PL higher than Leonardo owing to her ability to hold her own with him (and win twice, thanks to Deception/Feinting), and her Shredder-beating abilities.

Needlenose

Post by Jabroniville »

What do you get when you cross a mosquito with a jet fighter? You get Needlenose, the Turtles' largest and most bizarre ally. This blood-sucking military mutant with a killer crew cut is always prepared for battle with his two bee-seeking missiles and handheld mega machine gun. He's got six arms and legs along with two insect wings. One Turtle can ride on the Tongue Seat while more hang off to the sides, as Needlenose flies in the face of the Foot. There's also the rotating tail gun, gatling gun and plasma powered rocket engine.

-One of the weirdest toy sets of the TMNT line, Needlenose is a... well, a mosquito the size of a hippopotamus that the heroes use as a MOUNT. And he can apparently talk, fire guns, and use missiles. He's so weird (and out of scale to the others) that the cartoon never even BOTHERED to include him, but he's actually not a bad-looking toy. Well-detailed and enormous, four limbs and a disgusting face- he's the perfect thing to gross out your parents. Expect to pay a TON of money for him on eBay.

-Though really... you'd think that they'd HAVE to include both Needlenose and his counterpart, Killer Bee, in the cartoon. These were BIG TOYS, and likely cost a pretty penny compared to a standard-issue figure. With no episode to hype it, what chance did they have to sell? They spent a whole episode on the frickin' Cheapskates, Mousers, etc., but this pair were released at the peak of the toyline and NOTHING! I didn't even know they existed until I was an adult- I never saw any commercials!

Y'know that's weird, like, even as a kid I recognized that there were a lot of toys being marketed with the "Gross Out Your Parents" gimmick: Boglins, Garbage Pail Kids, Food Fighters, Mad Balls, M.U.S.C.L.E., the ghosts from the Ghostbusters toys... and absolutely every toyline had to have some sort of "ooze" or "slime" playset in the lineup. But I never really connected the Turtles to that trend until you said it just now.

The Turtles playsets included a "mutation machine" which was designed to drop blobs of ooze on you poor action figures. A friend of mine had it and we tried countless times to create our own ooze using toothpaste, shampoo and other similar stuff... it went as you might imagine 😛

It feeds into the rebellious tendencies of kids in the target age group, not to mention the sense of humor of your average 8-10 year old

Buzz the Turtles with this hybrid killing machine - the diabolic result of a dastardly experiment in cross-pollination between a wicked drone and a psychotic criminal. This Killer Bee has only one thing on his tiny bee brain - destroy the Turtles! And he's got the arms and legs to do it - six, in fact. Along with a sawed-off shotgun and chainsaw, the Killer Bee also carries a ball and chain and a pair of handcuffs. There's even room for the Foot to ride the electric chair seat. -The villainous counterpart to Needlenose, "Killer Bee" is just a big, stupid, giant bee- a "Psychotic Criminal" merged with a drone bee. This is quite an admirable toy, though- not only is he enormous, but he carries a ton of great details, like veined wings; arms that are blue, purple and red; crazy eyes; and an ELECTRIC CHAIR for a saddle. This is the kind of thing you really can't make anymore- I doubt they'd let a thing be called "Killer" ____, have an electric chair, or anything.

-Killer Bee is monstrously-sized, making him a PL 9 super-strong warrior. And like... he's got a frickin' CHAINSAW!

Baxter Stockman (Overview)

Post by Jabroniville »

BAXTER STOCKMAN:
-Another "Grandfathered In" TMNT character is always the scientist, Baxter Stockman, usually in an important role. In the Mirage Comics, he appears as a black man- a serious but sociopathic scientist engaging in criminal practices, and April O'Neil is his assistant. He mutilated his body to transform into a robot to get revenge on the Turtles, ending up being maimed repeatedly- Donatello kept his brain alive to appreciate the scientist's brilliant mind, but he was eventually shocked by the depravity Baxter showed, and told him to "rot in hell" before executing what was left of his brain.

Baxter is turned into a wild-haired, comedic Mad Scientist in the first cartoon (you weren't allowed to have black villains in children's cartoons back then), acting as a nerdy loser working for Shredder, and later one of the show's many stock "Mutant Supervillains". He appeared in the Archie continuity in the same vein, but the writers quickly ignored him- he is arrested by the police and then never seen again. They go a different route with villains and thus Baxter never becomes "The Fly". The 2003 series makes him more like the Mirage version, but ramps up how crazy he is. The 2000s & Nickelodeon cartoon and the original Mirage comics got more play out of him as an elite scientist (and all made him actually black... while keeping April a Caucasian redhead), but he eventually went nuts in them anyhow. In the 2000s one, there's a sick running gag where he is mutilated further and further with each failure, while the Nick toon combined the two previous cartoons' Baxter into making him a goofy fly-man, but kept the fact that he was black.

In Rise of the TMNT, he is "Baxter Stockboy", a young black kid who is a genius working (for no pay) in the store his parents own, and begs for online subscribers and such. In the 2014 movies, he gets a cameo in the first, but appears as Shredder's minion in the second, playing by Tyler Perry- he annoys the boss and is sent away before the finale. He was apparently going to be a mutant fly in the next one, but they cancelled the movies instead.

In most continuities, he is the creator of the "Mousers"- robotic minions.

Total: Abilities: 40 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 20 / Powers: 20 / Defenses: 15 (116)

-Baxter Stockman was a recurring foe for the Turtles in the cartoon, starting out as a goofy, nerdy scientist under The Shredder's employ. This low-rent Jeff Goldblum (all of the nerd, but none of the sexy), he was intially just some hapless loser- an innocent scientist conned by the Shredder into using his rodent-exterminating technology for EVIL- his Mousers being the perfect method to getting rid of Shredder's old nemesis, Splinter. Baxter was a Mirage original, but the show's writers wisely turned the black character white, as having the show's ONLY BLACK CHARACTER being a bad guy (one frequently abused and bossed-around by another) was deemed a bad idea. Baxter was thrown in an insane asylum at the end of his story arc (his talk of the giant talking rat and turtles was seen as ridiculous), and returned as a much more vengeful and evil lunatic.

-To add "More Mutants" to the Merch-driven show, Baxter soon transformed and became an even BIGGER example of the Butt-Monkey by turning into a Human Fly (horrifyingly, Krang decided to DISINTEGRATE him because he no longer needed the scientist around- a fly buzzed in alongside him, leading to the transformation). And most of his appearances ended with him in exile or being stranded somewhere. Pretty much the universe's victim by this point (a tragic origin story, since he was actually a fairly mild-mannered dude), he had a bunch of science-based weird stories about transformations and new inventions and junk, but he eventually just turned into a joke. There's a weird bit where he is exiled in space in Season 4, returns with no explanation in Season 5, then pops up in Season 7 still in exile as if the intermediate appearance never happened.

-Baxter is a PL 8 Blaster thanks to his sci-fi gear, but he's pretty low-level. And yeah, he could control flies at one point.

-Baxter Stockman was reverted to his Mirage self in the 2003 Cartoon- a sociopathic black man who again tries to kill his assistant, April O'Neil, when she's about to blow the whistle on his leading some bank robberies. He fails when the Turtles attack, introducing them to April, and Shredder has Stockman's left eye removed as punishment- thus begins a dark running gag for the character. With his next failure, he was wheelchair-bound and had a cybernetic hand. Holding a bit of a grudge against the Shredder (I mean, no kidding), he grabs an Utrom suit and attacks him alongside the Turtles, and the heroes & villain have to team up to defeat him. When he's next seen, Baxter is just a head on a spider-robot body, controlled remotely by Shredder. When Shredder disappears, he attempts to fight the Purple Dragons gang, but fails, and he loses so much of himself he's just a brain, spinal column and eyeball floating in a tube. LOL, like how is this even allowed in a kids' show?

-Stockman later shows up on Agent Bishop's group, creating new bodies for himself. At one point he dies and is recovered, and is furious about not being left at peace.

-Stockman is as big a genius as he was in the 1987 Toon, but he's a lot less loopy and more focused and intense. He also tends to have a different body every single time he's encountered, so he usually has a lot more durability or weapons, depending.

Re: Jab’s Builds! (April O'Neil! The Rat King! Giant Bugs! Baxter Stockman!)

As much as i hate the "Evil Mad Scientist" Trope(why can't we have a "Good" Mad Scientist show up?!), Baxter's story is just wrong to me. The Turtles do NOTHING to save him after the first time. They HAVE to know he'll be hurt again when he get's back to Shredder, but they do squat. From Baxter's POV i can understand why he hates the Turtles.Might not agree with his Coping Mechanism, but i understand why he's lashing out....

And on the Subject of Super Science; Where've all the Good Guy Mad Scientist's go?! All we get shown anymore are Overblown Egoists like Stockman or Sanchez(yes, i consider Rick Sanchez an Evil Mad Scientist and what he's doing to his Family as Wrong). Where's the Spenglers or Doc Browns at?!
All four of these Scientists have two things in common: Their considerd "Leading Experts" in their Fields(Stockman has Robotics; Spengler has Parapsychology; Sanchez nailed Particle Physics and Brown owns Quantum Mechanics) and Their all considered Psychologically Insane by today's standards. I just wish we could have a more "even keel" on the number of "Good-vs-Evil" when it comes to the "Mad" Super-Science....
