Summoning Question

Post by grc0001 »

Hi guys,

I almost understand the 'Summoning' rules okay, except for the 'Heroic'. So, my player decided he would like essentially duplicates
of himself. Its a 150pt build The line of text I don't totally understand is:

"The creatures you summon are not subject to the minion rules, but treated like normal non-player characters."

Does that mean that the summoned duplicate, in essence, have the same point build as the actual character, with the same
abilities, skills, etc., except for the combat rules for NPCs?

Also, at PL10, could you build a 150pt summoned duplicate if you had the points to spend?

Thanks for any info,
Graham C.

Points don't really calculate into it.

Minions use a slightly different set of rules (see index) that make them both far more fragile and far less effective against hero class characters. They're meant to be cannon fodder.

In addition, summoned minions are even more limited than normal minions.

But, having minion class characters may be a whole lot better on the flow of the game- fewer extra actions, more fragile that help to stop the summoner from dominating too much game time. Especially, if those players have problems deciding what they want to do on a given term.

To make multiple minions even easier to handle, you should look at the swarm rules.

Yes.

If you were a 190 pt. character, you could spend 40 points for Summon 10: Heroic Duplicate. And that would summon a duplicate of your said character, all 150 points of him or her minus the Duplication power.

If you can squeeze everything else you want for yourself into 118 points, you could then spend 32 points on Summon 8: Heroic Duplicate, and fit inside 150 points.

Of course, this math works whether one is summoning a duplicate of himself, or someone else.

The Deluxe Handbook has a Duplicate/Twin option in the Quick Character Generator (p90) that gives a few possible examples using Summon 8 to make PL 8 Twins with Heroic and Mental Link, similar to what Ken suggests above. Technically the two PCs would be PL 8 individually, limited as per the standard rule of Summons having a PL no higher than the Summon rank, but would also be controlled by one player, have a mental link, and have Setup and Teamwork which they will probably use whenever possible, so you still get a pair of heroes that are mechanically as capable as one PL10. OTOH, as GM you could opt to allow the pair to build up to setting PL (presumably PL10), which would make them a little more powerful although they'd lose some versatility putting more points toward combat.
