"Good point, we can talk about old times later, you still like banana milkshakes don't you?"

Taking a moment to check the surrounds Imogen became more serious

"No need to answer that, now it is time to hide."

With that Imogen seemed to disappear into the surrounds of the cove.

Jason's eyes light up a bit at the mention of banana milkshakes. He hasn't had one in years. They didn't have bananas... or ice cream back home. And well, the Order would never entertain "childish indulgences" like that.

Genie snaps back into serious mode brings Jason back to the seriousness of the situation as well. Nobody answered the radio, so people will be sent.

Watching Genie fade into the scenery, Jason follows suit with his magical ability.
Activate Fade and move behind some cover.

So you can extend me a little bit of trust and we'll deal with this threat to your employees and livelihood... or not and we'll politely settle for whatever public relations tour of the facility you show reporters and stock holders."
Despite the vast wealth of interviews and speeches given by you, Rex seems surprised at the depth of your eloquence. You are not quite what he expects from a talking animal. He looks at you for a long moment, his face hard.

Without turning, Rex gestures to the arm candy behind him. The two women get in the sports car and drive off. Then he pulls off his sunglasses and looks you right in the eye. "Our great nation is not defended by trust. It is defended by the by the wealth of its coffers, by our willingness for sacrifice and above all else by the force of its arms -- by missiles and bombs and bullets."

"I don't trust you, Mr. Gelert. And you would be a fool to trust me. However," he continues. "I know you'll raise trouble if I don't show you something. And I know your friend will be able to tell if I give you the dog and pony show I give to nosey reporters. And even though I don't use the T-word, you do have a point that your harassing those Anarchy Command loons is far more productive than harassing me. So I'm going to give you the real deal. No tricks, no surprises. When you see it, you'll see why this company is being targeted."

He gestures for you to follow. If you do, then Rex leads you through the campus, employees and security staring curiously as the three of you pass. He proceeds through the door of the main building. "For nearly 60 years, the company my grandfather founded has proudly produced weapons that kill terrorists and commies," he says, gesturing to slick electronic displays along the hall that show off high-tech weapons systems. "The F-35 Lightning II, the Zumwalt-class missile cruiser, and the MAX and Super MAX armor used by AEGIS are just some of the projects for which G.A.S. is the principal contractor or a major program partner. Now, we're about to tackle the last great threat to American national security, one that has never been properly addressed by our armed forces: the super-powered being."

You proceed down a flight of escalators, past armed security guards, and through a set of weapons scanners. Both you and Amethyst set off every alarm on the scanners but Rex waves you through. You continue through a tunnel into a large conference room guarded by two guards in power armor. The walls are solid metal half a foot thick, visible when the door glides open. This seems to be some kind of secure meeting place for high-ranking visitors. "What you're about to see has only been seen by the President, the joint chiefs and a handful of top DARPA personnel. Field tests will commence next week."

Rex waits for the door to close, then taps his smartwatch and gestures at the far wall, which comes to life, revealing it is a display screen. It shows rows upon rows of advanced powered armor suits standing at attention before an American flag.

The camera cuts to a scene of battle. You see a group of what might be super-powered villains or troops attacking a U.S. city. A flying woman wreathed in flame sets entire buildings burning while a heavily-muscled, blue-skinned, 8-foot-tall brute hurls cars at fleeing civilians. The music swells as the power-armored suits displayed at the start of the video descend from the sky on rocket thrusters. They fire beams of red light from wrist and chest-mounted projectors at the villains. Immediately the fire controller's flames go out with a puff and the brutish hulk shrivels up and reverts to a skinny young man in his underwear. The powered-armor forces easily wipe out the rest of the villains with missiles and lasers.

The camera cuts to a scene of intense urban combat in a devastated desert city. Wounded Marines lie on the ground, bullets throwing up clouds of dust and dirt about the surrounding cover. Suddenly the power-armored suits fly down and land next to the wounded soldiers. They opens up, revealing that there are no wearers inside: the suits are autonomous drones. The suits crouch down and envelop the wounded Marines, gunfire pinging off armor. Then they stand back up and the Marines, now wearing the suits, fly off safely.

Another cut. Government officials escorted by two of the armored suits disembark from a car. Suddenly a woman in a black bodysuit appears and gestures. The two officials clutch their heads and scream, while the car behind them floats off the ground, lifted by telekinetic power. In response, the armored suits emit a dome-shaped, glowing red energy field from shoulder-mounted projectors, and the officials immediately stop screaming and slump in relief. More suits arrive and fire their power-nullifying beams at the woman, causing the car to crash harmlessly down on the red barrier protecting the officials. The suits salute, and the scene fades to black over stereotypical Hollywood movie fanfare. The screen displays:

Superhuman Threat Armed Response System

There is no doubt that this is why the Anarchy Command is targeting G.A.S. Weapons specialized against superhumans would be a severe threat to them, especially if they are as effective as the video suggests.

Your communicator crackles to life with Amy's voice, actually Amethyst sending an encrypted transmission using text-to-speech so that Rex can't hear her speak. "Those weapons are powered by Daka crystals. I know. I was stabbed by one before."

Rex swipes a keycard in a door at the far end of the room, taps in 12 digits into a keypad, and presses his palm against a palmprint reader. The door glides open and reveals a cylindrical lift.

"Come."

OOC

I made a mistake and you actually have 3 HP:

+1 starting
+2 for the scene at Justice Hall
+1 for Rex's prejudice complication
-1 reroll
= 3

You can interact with Rex or Amethyst, if you like. Decide if you will follow Rex into the lift (no check required). Amethyst follows your lead whether you accept or refuse.

Your HP is refunded since the reroll is still a failure.
"Jamming? This close to shore? But our transmissions with the Ragnarok are proceeding as normal. Hah! You may have slipped through the cannon fodder, audacious imposter, but your mischief comes to an end. Feel fortunate General Havoc has ordered you captured instead of fried!"

The transmission cuts off. A few seconds later, something bright and golden shoots out of the water some distance from the shore and comes speeding towards land. At first it looks like a comet, but as it comes closer to shore and slows to a stop, you see it is actually a man wearing a silver bodysuit and surrounded by a halo of bright, shimmering energy. Blue plasma fire burns from his eyes as he surveys the defeated R.I.O.T. soldiers with a look of supreme disgust. The look of disgust intensifies when he sees that there are no heroes in sight to blast."

"Hiding, eh?" He keys his earpiece. "Catastrophe to the ACS Storm Warning. Direct cruise missile bombardment on coordinates 47-89-03, spread pattern. Over!"

Out at sea, you see eight mighty geysers of salt water erupt as cruise missiles launch from under the water. The Anarchy Command must have a submarine lingering close to shore. The eight missiles rocket high up in the air, then in unison make a sharp turn downwards toward the cove.

OOC

AA Catastrophe perception: 1D20+10 = [8]+10 = 18

Catastrophe cannot sense either of you (he does not beat Nightbird's stealth check and does not have the right powers to spot Jason). But he makes an educated guess that since you have the radio from the R.I.O.T. squad and defeated them, that means you are likely still in the area. So he radios in a cruise missile bombardment on the interior of the cove. This is a standard action for him, effectively a version of Summon. The cruise missiles only act (hit) on their turn next round.

Catastrophe is hovering at the entrance of the cove. Note that he is not a minion.

You see a glowing figure dart out from the sub, followed shortly by eight missiles from its vertical-launch missile tubes. Whatever Jason and Nightbird are doing out there, they have certainly got the Anarchy Command's attention.

Bright red magma forms about the submarine's engines, surrounded by a torrent of bubbles as the seawater surrounding them is instantly vaporized. There is the deep BOOM of an explosion and the sub tilts upwards twenty degrees as both the engine nacelles deform and burst under the heat and pressure.

"Oooooh," Calamity hisses. "That was my ride back! You're going to suffer dearly if I have to haul your ass all the way back to the Ragnarok manually, hero!"

She lunges at you, swimming as agile and swift as a shark, and unleashes a flurry of slashes at you from her serrated claws. Unfortunately for her, you are also just as agile and swift as a shark in water, and all she manages to slice up are some stray bubbles. Calamity actually seems unpleasantly surprised by your slipperiness.

In the distance there is a great gout of bubbles from the submarine's nose as it launches a torpedo. The missile makes a great curve in the water to turn and head towards you, but the torpedo is designed to engage large targets such as ships and you easily avoid it, keeping a wide enough distance to avoid its proximity fuse, and it sails harmlessly past you.

Meanwhile...

"Deep Six"
Federal Penitentiary D-6, Administrative Maximum
Several miles off the coast of Phoenix Bay

As the choppers with the AEGIS insignia take off, guards in powered armor escort the prisoners across cold, bare concrete towards the forbidding steel doors of Deep Six super-prison. There are 11 of them: Marshal Lawless and the 10 R.I.O.T. troopers who accompanied his attack on Justice Hall, with their hands and wrists cuffed with AEGIS power nullifiers. Security cameras with integrated gun turrets watch their progress through the great doors, down the gargantuan main lift that carries them into the depths of the underwater facility, and to a concrete hall with rows of scanners and electronic equipment, operated by more rifle-toting guards.

"Remove all your possessions, hidden weapons and tools, then pass through the scanner," one of the guards instructs. "One at a time. Any threatening action may be met with immediate and overwhelming force."

Without a word, the R.I.O.T. troops start removing various items: belt buckles, pins, etc. One has a watch; a few remove personal jewellery. One by one, scanners start to light up green as the prisoners pass through them and are escorted further down to be processed by the VaMPIRE system.

"I don't like this," one of the officers watching says. "They're too compliant. They almost look like they want to be here."

Marshal Lawless steps up to one of the scanners. One of the power-armored guards uncuffs him, allowing him to remove his belt and military insignia, place them in a plastic tray nearby, then step into the machine. The scanner lights up red with a loud BUZZ.

"Your ring," says the guard in the booth who is operating the scanner, glancing at computer readouts. "Remove it, then pass through the scanner again."

"This?" Marshal Lawless says, giving the guard the middle finger by holding up the hand wearing the offending item.

"Very funny," the guard says. "Remove--"

Marshal Lawless's middle finger swings open on a hinge to reveal a small cybernetic gun within. Before the guard's jaw can finish dropping open to form an 'O' of surprise the Marshal shoots him dead through the bulletproof glass of his booth, leaving a bright starburst of fresh blood on the wall behind him.

Immediately alarms start shrieking. "Freeze!" "Halt!" come the shouts as power-armored guards raise their rifles and take aim. Marshal Lawless calmly shoots the guard behind him through the faceplate of his armor, then shoots open the power-nullifier cuffs about his ankles with a third shot. Bullets rain down around him but he cleverly shelters behind the guard's power-armored corpse.

"You are grossly outmatched in firepower," the supervising officer says, pulling out his own pistol and taking aim. Over a dozen prison guards in powered armor and the same number with rifles and bulletproof vests train their weapons on the Anarchy Command agent. "I advise you surrender immediately."

In response Marshal Lawless shoves aside the corpse and raises both hands. All 10 of his fingers retract to reveal similar cybernetic guns.

"Oh cr--"

The shooting is short, but very intense. Somewhere in the middle, the siren gets shot out too, and there are some explosions, perhaps from suicide vests or grenades. When the din ends, all that's left are the distant shouts calling for medical assistance and reinforcements; a single scanner flashing red, buzzing, unattended, into the lifeless room; and one set of bloody footprints leading towards the elevator down into the bowels of the facility.

Would that mean that the effects of these weapons wouldn't be permanent? Because that to me sound like the easiest way for these to be misused. Out loud Gelert says. "Well that explains what Anarchy Command is targeting this company for. The chance to destroy... or steal... the armies new anti-super weapon would definitely be a high priority."

Gelert follows Rex into the lift. "So I can understand why the government and army would want the Super negating weaponry, but why robots instead of say an infantry weapon or piloted armor?"

"It was worth a try" Imogen thought after the reaction on the radio then seeing Catastrophe appear and hover up over the water "Smart too, why can't they all be like White Knight"

"Get clear of the missiles Jason, I will distract him." Imogen whispered hoping her voice will reach where Jason was hiding.

Moving out from her hiding place to a clear area in the shore, Imogen appeared relaxed as though she was on a walk through the park.

"Finally I was getting bored waiting for someone to turn up though I was expecting Havoc and not a nobody" Imogen called out her voice carrying round the cove.

"Wise move staying up there, you look like you're brave but you and I and your colleagues all know better but I can't really blame you being afraid. If I was you I would be scared of me as well. Now lets see if this will cut you down to size"

Opening up her mouth Imogen let out a scream, Catastrophe was near the limit of her voice but worth a go and if he focused on her then Jason could get to safety from those missiles.

OOC

Amethyst can transmit securely because she has subtle communication. Whether subtle communication is required to reply is less clear. In this case you can reply securely as a freebie since we can assume you and Amethyst worked out what to do in this situation beforeand (and Rex is not eavesdropping in any case), just note that there may be future scenes where being able to talk privately in the presence of an enemy is valuable.
You transmit a reply by blinking on and off the glow of your Ring of Hope in a coded sequence. Amethyst thinks a bit before answering your first question.

"As far as we know, yeah. But the science around Daka crystals is fuzzy. There's a lot we still don't know about how they work and what they can do. So I wouldn't rule it out, either."

"As for hacking, that depends on how they're controlled. If they're remote-controlled by radio, like most military drones are, they can be hacked -- it's happened before. Especially if you have spies or insiders who might clue you in to vulnerabilities in the encryption.

"If they're AI-controlled, like bog standard supervillain robot minions, then the hacker needs physical access to the computer inside. For a drone that can fight and defend itself, that usually means physically disabling/restraining the machine and taking it apart."

Amethyst follows you into the lift. Rex looks very smug as he taps a control and the doors close. You get the sense that he expects Amethyst to be impressed; for her part, she says nothing.

"The future of warfare is automated, Mr. Gelert," he says. "It's more reliable. More efficient. More economical. No veterans' bills to pay, no expensive and lengthy training process, no squeamish public needed to support the war effort against our enemies. We're keeping our soldiers home and saving American lives and money. There is an option for both remote control and piloted operation -- it's useful for medivac purposes and such, as you saw -- but I envision autonomous drones as the primary mode of operation."

The lift descends through dozens of feet of concrete and emerges into a transparent lift tube. Through the walls of the tube you see a vast factory floor with dozens of engineers and technicians, as well as row upon row of the STARS drones under bright white LED light. There are at least 50 of them, many hooked up to computers, fuel tanks and other monitoring equipment.

"All except one or two are combat-ready," Amethyst informs you by radio. "I'm guessing the only reason Rex didn't use them to defend against the attack here just now is to keep them secret."

"This is the main production facility. It's the only one right now, but if field testing proves successful then production will be scaled up," Rex says.

The lift glides to a stop and the doors open. Curious heads turn in your direction as Rex leads you through the production floor. The air is cold, air-conditioned, and smells of plastic, synthetic lubricant and freshly-machined titanium alloy. A woman in her mid-20's wearing a sharp business suit under a lab coat walks up accompanied by a small group of engineers and technicians. She looks at you and Amethyst, and her eyes narrow.

"This is Chief Technology Officer, Regina Grace," Rex introduces. "She will answer your questions -- within reason. We can't give away all our secrets, after all."

OOC

You can ask questions about the STARS technology. Neither Regina nor any of the engineers can lie to you on technical questions while Amethyst is present. You can also examine the suits, or interact with any of the NPC's present. At any time, you can chose to request to leave as well.

Aranel couldn't help but smirk at Calamity's response, she just left a nuclear submarine dead in the water and engines having to be fully replaced from all the damage she did and the bruiser goes to simple threats. And slipped up the process, this Ragnarok sounds like a piece of information Calamity wasn't supposed to let out. Calamity needs to be taken care of, but she didn't feel comfortable using magma until she knew her opponent could take such intense heat. Focusing she willed two giant boulders to form on each side of Calamity before trying to force them to slam together with her foe in the middle, but the drag from the water was set her aim off and she wasn't sure they would hit.

Jason starts to move away per Genie's orders but almost immediately stops himself.

Back home, the others would often give him similar orders when the situation started getting more dangerous. But that was years ago. Jason had long proven himself to them.

Maybe that's why. Genie isn't fully up to speed on his abilities. Well, he would just have to show her.
As stated in OOC, hold until just before the missiles go and move up to her and activate his shield, Contego, around both of them.
The shield spell will deactivate the Concealment as it is Passive.

Catastrophe has a very witty retort in store. Unfortunately for him, it gets obliterated in a deafening sonic blast that would shred steel. He screams and covers his ears as the sonic waves bombard him, causing the air and his corona of energy to ripple and flicker dangerously.

"A metahuman?!" he spits. "You heroes are the worst of traitors. You chose to side with the imperialists and the oppressors -- now SUFFER!"

He holds out both hands towards Nightbird and a sizzling bolt of electricity arcs from his fingers towards her and into the ground.

High up in the air, the missiles reach the apex of their arc and turn back down towards the ground. The resulting fireball throws up a wall of sea water, salt and sand some 60ft high. It collapses both arms of the cove, causing them to collapse into the sea. However when the smoke clears Catastrophe sees a dome of energy protecting Nightbird and a new, unfamiliar figure with her. The look on his face is that of someone who has just been informed that his lotto ticket with winning numbers is invalid.

OOC
AA Catastrophe Dodge DC 22, toughness DC 27/21: 1D20+14 = [9]+14 = 23 Passed dodge
AA Catastrophe Dodge DC 22, toughness DC 27/21: 1D20+8 = [1]+8 = 9 Failed 2 degrees, dazed and -1

Catastrophe then uses Electromagnetic Blast on Nightbird.
AA Catastrophe attack vs Nightbird: 1D20+10 = [16]+10 = 26 Hits
Nightbird must make a DC 29 Toughness check, and Catastrophe recovers from Dazed at the end of his turn.

Just before the missiles strike, Jason then moves next to Nightbird and creates a created object of 12 ranks around himself and Nightbird. The cruise missile bombardment then strikes.

AA Contego toughness DC 26: 1D20+12 = [6]+12 = 18
Failed 2 degrees. The created object has holes punched in it (so you can enter and leave it). However neither of you take any damage from the cruise missile bombardment. If you stay inside the object, you can still fire out and use it as cover (+2 bonus to defense), like a bunker.

Round 2
22 Catastrophe (-1, Staggered)
22 Jason
19 Nightbird *

Nightbird is up!

Nightbird
HP: 6 LP: 1
Condition: Bruise x 1 and Dazed (till end of turn)

Trying not to mentally kick herself for assuming that her attack had rocked Catastrophe, Imogen was too slow to avoid the Anarchy supers response.

He holds out both hands towards Nightbird and a sizzling bolt of electricity arcs from his fingers towards her and into the ground.

Pain arched through her body and only her force of will prevented her from dropping to one knee then the missiles dropped

"Too slow thought had more time at least Jason is safe"

As the sand and dust cleared Imogen realised that Jason was standing beside her, not where he should be, and had saved her life from the looks of what was left of the cove.

"Thanks Jason that is impressive work now lets take this guy down."

Letting out another scream Imogen targeted Catastrophe through one of the gaps in the barrier.

Later she would have to work out her internal conflict where she wanted to tell Jason off for not listening to her against the fact he saved her life and wasn't 10 years old anymore.

Fail 2 degrees Bruise and dazed

Nightbird will repeat her Birdy Wail attack DC22 Dodge for a DC27/21 Toughness Save.

Did Catastrophe fail by 3 degrees as he rolled a 9 on his toughness against DC21?
