Iona
HP: 0
Cnd: Bruised (-3 to DCs); Fatigued; Hearing Impaired
PP:0

Glancing at Duncan, then at the security chief, Iona responds in German. “Yes Sergeant, he is important to our cause despite his mannerisms. Please be patient with him.

She then changes back to English as she continues to speak with Sergeant Kreppler,. “We cannot afford to wait here. I’d rather not be above ground when the enemy comes in force to search the area. I can’t risk taking the case back to the base, so it will need to be opened en route. Once we begin to move in the van, I’ll need you to activate the jamming device, Sergeant. We need to return to the sanctuary of the base unless you feel strongly that is unwise.
OOC: Ok, Iona has several options on opening the box. It’s her belief that trying to circumvent the three locks is futile given her lack of technological resources a present. The polycarbonate case will have to be opened via force. Obviously, she’ll want to use the method least likely to damage the specimen inside. Would Iona be able to use John’s combat knife along with her Move Object power to generate a powerful cutting action? She would essentially use it like a high-powered saw to sheer off the front inch or so of the case where the locks are located. Would Iona have to power stunt her Move Object power to make a Damage Effect out of it or can it be done without Extra Effort?
Warrant Officer Steiner…” she says softly, looking at John in particular, “…I’ll need your combat knife to open the case.
OOC: Ok, there are some assumptions for what follows: 1) that John agrees to give Iona his combat knife, and 2) that Sergeant Kreppler agrees that it is best to leave the construction site and head to base. If so, then here is what Iona hopes to do.
As her comrades enter the black van, Iona asks both Duncan and John to help hold the case down on the floor of the van. "Just keep your hands and fingers clear of the front where the locks are." To make sure they both understand where the knife will be cutting, she moves her own hand across the exact area that the knife will be cutting.

After Kreppler starts the van and gets them out on the road, Iona confers with the security-cheif to insure that the jamming device is turned on. Then using her ability to manipulate magnetic fields, she levitates the knife off the floor of the van and places it into position to cut. As she focuses harder, the knife begins to vibrate quickly back in forth - like an electric carving knife. The blade is a blur as she lowers it down and begins to cut across the front face of the case about an inch or so behind where the locking mechanisms are located.
OOC: Ok, she'll begin the cutting process, adjusting as necessary. IF she sees that she is not deep enough, then she'll cut further into the box. But she obviously wants to avoid cutting so far towards the middle of the case that she hits the internal specimen container. Here's here power effect roll: Supernaturalist: D20 + 12 → 20(8 + 12). So, a total of 20.
Here's Iona's Fortitude roll against the noise of the vibrating case: Supernaturalist: D20 + 6 → 11(5 + 6). So, a total of 11. A failure of 2 degrees. So, she is Hearing Disabled. Here's her DC 16 Dodge Check: Supernaturalist: D20 + 8 → 20(12 + 8). So, a total of 20. The Damage Effect is halved against her. Here is her check against a rank 18 Damage Effect: Supernaturalist: D20 + 9 → 16(7 + 9). So, a total of 16. A failure of one degree. She is now at -4 (rank 8 Toughness) versus future Damage Checks.
The Affliction's effect has been down graded to Hearing Impaired to to the rank being 16 instead of 21.
Here is the latest Intellect check requested by Sakuro: Supernaturalist: D20 + 8 → 17(9 + 8). So, a total of 17.

John is relieved to here that his team is headed back to base. There is a barely noticeable look of skepticism and puzzlement when John hands his combat knife over to the slender cyborg. After everyone is in the van, John agrees to help Iona by holding the case down on the van floor with Duncan's help. He's careful to keep his hands and fingers away from the "cutting zone" as he lets his full body weight press down on the case from above.

"Ok...", he says with a nod, "...I'm ready."
OOC: Here's John's Strength roll: Supernaturalist: D20 + 3 → 5(2 + 3). So, a total of 5. Looks like John is not providing much stability.
Here is John's Fortitude check against the Rank 21 Affliction: Supernaturalist: D20 + 8 → 19(11 + 8). So, a total of 19. He failed by one degree. He is Hearing Impaired. Here is his Dodge check versus a 16 difficulty: Supernaturalist: D20 + 8 → 27(19 + 8). So, a total of 27. He faces a Damage Check of 18.
Here is his roll: Supernaturalist: D20 + 3 → 5(2 + 3). So, a total of 5. A failure of 3 degrees.
He is Staggered and has a -1 to future Damage Checks.
The Affliction's effect has been avoided due to its rank being 16 instead of 21.

DUNCAN REDWOOD
Snapping out of his brief stupor, Duncan will also grab hold of the case to help keep it stable. He'll turn to the german guy and say
"Sorry 'bout swiping your coffee, but after whst i just went through you'd need a drink too. I'll get you back once this(he'll nod his head down to the case) get's settled up....if Stronghold hasn't frozen my assetes by then..."
OOC: Basic strength check for Duncan...
Base strength check: 7+0=7--Not much better than Supernaturalist, but at least it's not a Nat 1! :)

Dunca, Iona, John

"It will take us more than five minutes to reach the base. Stronghold is not looking for this van. If you do not mind, I'll drive around until you are certain there is no tracking device."

Hendrick waits for confirmation from Iona before opening the driver-side door, making a point of ignoring Duncan's remark about buying him a coffee. The three of you enter form the back, which is unlocked. Inside there is a bench on either side of the van, which space missing for the door. Towards the roof are cupboards where the medkit and tools Kreppler mentioned must have been stored. There appears to be some extra insulation along the walls., floor, and ceiling. Otherwise it is very stripped down and plain in the back of the van.

Following Iona's directions Duncan and John press down on the polycarbonate case. Iona, magnetically holding John's knife turns it into an improvised vibro-knight out of science fiction. With the vibrating blade she cuts into the case. The work is slow going. The case begins to vibrate in concert with the vibrations of the blade. Duncan and John, either not getting a good grip, or lacking in physicals strength, are unable to hold the case still for long. A loud clamor erupts in the back of the van, like the sound of machinegun fire, as the case batters against the floor of the van. In the confine space you are in the sound is a violent assault on the senses.

About halfway through the process of cutting the lock away from the case an acrid scent enters the air and a stinging fluid comes spraying out of the container, spurred on by the vibrations of the knife it splashes over Duncan, Iona, and John. The fluid quickly dissolves the clothing it comes into contact with and burns at the skin.
OOC wrote:Duncan and John fail the Strength check.

Duncan, Iona, and John ... make a Fortitude check DC 16. 1st Degree of failure is Hearing Impaired, 2nd Degree is Hearing Disabled, 3rd Degree is Hearing Unaware. This is from the vibration induced loud noise.

Next make a DC 16 Dodge check to halve Damage for a DC 21/18 Toughness check as acid splashes over the three of you. Duncan is -1 to resist Damage from his scalding hot coffee and his stolen body armor will not help with this.

Anyone still conscious/alive may then make a Perception check.

Diego

Diego follows he planned route back to the base, but does not encounter his companions on the way back. Either they out paced him, taken a different route back to base, or they have been compromised. He does not know. On his way he does see an increased in Stronghold activity. The cause, obvious. Diego's allies have made a very loud statement. Overhead drones are abuzz and there are even military helicopters hovering over buildings. This was just the excuse Stronghold needed to step up security, tighten their hold, and call additional manpower into Hadron City. The citizenry would probably welcome it too.

Back at the HQ people are busy and active, but it is far quieter and calmer than the street of Hadron City in the wake the mission to acquire the Viridi Mater.

On the way back to the base, as the nannites healed back up, Diego couldn't help but notice that Praetor Null's plans were likely in disarray due to Iona showing the full force of her powers and Strongholds response. With a full blown super powered person present, Diego knew enough of how the government worked to know any checks that may have been there were probably lifted. Going forward, he would be able to move about. The others would have quite a bit of difficulty with increased patrols and drones.

When Diego arrived back at the base without signs of Iona or the others waiting, he feared the worst. On top of that, there was the expected increased activity since they had just set off a nuke. How much of that fall out hit his group he would soon find out. Chen took over the base, Praetor Null shutting it down, Diego being stripped of his powers, or worse. If Iona didn't make it back with the plant, things would be worse. For the debrief, Diego was already prepping his mitigation plans in his head. Spread conspiracy theories, make people think Iona was a rogue drone from Stronghold, blame another group for misdirection from Nul'l's forces, and the list went on. If people could believe the moon landing was faked, it wasn't a leap to think they would pin Iona on being an experiment by Stronghold gone awry with Diego's face plus the others being part of some faction.

Before getting too far along, Diego had to find Tilly to see if she got out safely. If it was his last command in charge of the base, he would make sure info was locked up as much as possible and any intel on this cowboy who worked for Sokolov found out. This cowboy was involved in the mess and high alert somehow. Diego just didn't know how, but would get to the bottom of it even if his mission wasn't related to the plant. There was shooting, so the man in a duster packing was likely spotted. If the six soldiers had passed their patrol, the four of them might have had more time to get away.

So many thoughts, so little time. Diego doesn't stop to ask why everyone is moving about, he could guess that. He only stops to ask for Tilly's location and heads right for her in his native form. No time for niceties. While he would never admit it to himself, Diego also went looking for Tilly to make sure she got out ok.

DR.DUNCAN REDWOOD
HP-1/0 CND- -2to Resist Damage & Dazed (Hearing impaired)

Growing up on the Massachusetts Coast(SpecificallyNewburyport), he'd always heard the term "Falling Gallantry" but could never figure out what it meant untill he looked it up as a teen.Stupidity as a teen had him consider it an ignorant option and one he certainly would NEVER do(he would never be out on the front lines, after all). And yet he does JUST that, throwing himself bodily onto the case and covering it, screaming into his helmet, his throat going raw from the pain as he feel's the Acid strike his body......
OOC:Ok, here's the Fortitude check on the Sound...
Fortitude check:13+1=14--by two points, so he's got Hearing Impaired
Dodge check to cover the case...
Dodge check for Case: 20+1=21--Y'know, it's kinda weird Duncan get's the Nat 20's on the "Action Man" rolls, as he's ANYTHING but one....
Now for the DC 23 Toughness check, since i'd auto-fail the Dodge...
Toughness check: 2+1=3--Spending my newly aquired HP to re-roll that Abomination...
re-rolled Toughness check:4+1 -1 =4+10=14 -- Two degrees of Fail ...

Iona
HP: 0
Cnd: Bruised (-3 to DCs); Fatigued; Hearing Impaired
PP:0

The banging vibration of the case has temporarily overloaded her auditory sensors. Iona is caught off guard as Duncan throws himself across the splattering acid as it is violently shaken loose from the case.

"Bah!.." She shouts in a rare moment where her voice grows loud, "...get him off the case! I must prevent the specimen from being destroyed." Glancing sideways at John she shouts again, "Pull him off!"

The young cyborg then uses the magnetically manipulated knife to steadily cut through the remainder of the polycarbonate case. As she does so, she tips the case slightly forward so that any remaining acid flows away from the interior of the container.
As soon as she can see the interior specimen container, she'll quickly assess if it has been breached. If not, the remove it from the case. If it has been breached, she'll attempt to drain any remaining acid out of it before attempting to seal it/wrap it with whatever is available.

John along with Duncan struggle to stabilize the box, but the powerful vibrations set up by Iona's magnetically-enhanced blade are too strong. Not on the does the box begin to rattle violently up and down, but soon a visible vapor and liquid begin to splatter forth from the case.

John sees a few drops hit the floor of the van and begin to fizzle. But about the time that he realizes it's a corrosive of some kind, Duncan has already thrown himself across the container. John is reminded momentarily of the heroism that fellow soldier show when they throw themselves on grenades to save their comrades.

When Duncan begins to scream in pain, John freezes for a moment, unsure as to whether pulling him from the case is a good idea. Then Iona yells out to pull him off, and still John is wary that the vapors might be poisonous to breath. When the female cyborg yells a second time in desperation, John grabs the back of Duncan's coat and pull him back away from the container. Then John makes sure to stay well away from the case in order to avoid the acid and any fumes that might linger.
Here's John's latest Fortitude check versus the acid fumes: Supernaturalist: D20 + 8 → 20(12 + 8). A total of 20. He succeeds.

Diego

On entering the base Diego checks with the security guard stationed at the entrance he entered the base from. The guard supplies Diego with Corporal Sander's location, which is the command and control center. The woman also informs Diego, before he floats off, that Tilly brought a wounded man with her when she came back to the base. He's currently receiving medical attention in the med-bay.

Flying through the base Diego creeps through cracks in the command and control center's doors where he sees Tilly standing at the center of the room. Runners come and go, relaying messages before receiving orders from her and running off again.

Duncan, Iona, John

Duncan reacts before he even thinks about what is going on. At the first sign of danger he leaps atop the polycarbonate case, curling his body around it. In an instant his chest explodes with burning pain. When John pulls him off of the case Duncan is limp. His body armor is melted away, as is the shirt underneath. His skin is raw and bloody from severe chemical burns. Still wet with the acidic spray, it drips off of his frame chest and onto the van's flooring. The insulation sizzles, a fowl stink rising from it.

Once Duncan is out of the way Iona gets back to work, cleaving the rest of the top portion of the case away, removing the lock. The interior now exposed Iona can sense the metallic container inside before she sees it. Tipping the case Iona pours out the contents of the polycarbonate case. A slurry of dissolved materials and acidic fluids spills onto the van's floor. Black clouds rise up from the puddle as the insulation rapidly burns away. The acid slows once it hits the metal frame of the vehicle, but continues to eat away at it. While these fumes are no hinderance to Iona, the black cloud that begins to fill the confined space of the van is harsh on John and Duncan's eyes and lungs.

Iona, focusing on the Viridi Mater, opens up the armored case, revealing a metal cylinder about the size of a quart of milk. The container is pitted with acid burns. Small wisps of black fowl smelling smoke continue to rise from it as residual acid persist in burning at it's exterior.
OOC wrote:Duncan's stolen body armor is trashed.

Duncan and John, you two need to make Fortitude checks because of the fumes. DC 16 1st Degree of failure is Hindered. 2nd degree is Disabled. 3rd degree is Incapacitated

Iona, the Viridi Mater's container is on the verge of being compromised. The acid on it is slowly burning holes into it.

When he put TIlly as his delegate to lead the base, Diego expected results. Her current command of it did not disappoint. While he would be out from the punishment Null was going to inflict, much like last time, she would be a fine lead if she wasn't already given command of the base. If Praetor Null was waiting for him, no one had told him yet. So there was still time.

Speaking in his monotone native voice devoid of any niceties he usually extended to Tilly, Diego got right to the point. "An agent of Dr. Sokolov was running an operation in the area in parallel possibly related to our mission to get the plant. He was a fool carrying a gun in a cowboy outfit. Whoever he is ruined our previous plans. No matter if he is an agent of Dr. Sokolov, he will need to be punished.", begins Diego. His voice tone never changes, but cadence carries an obvious anger to it. He wasn't certain it was the agent, but when compared to the woman in the parking lot and a coincidence they were moving the plant it seemed most plausible. That and the agent actions nearly drew Stronghold attention before they got to the building.

"On my way back, the ward was in chaos with Stronghold arriving in mass. Did Iona make it back to the base with the plant? We lost communication when it took off into the air after John. I was informed you arrived with a wounded man. Was it John?", further inquires Diego. He needed situational awareness. Dr. Sokolov was untouchable. Iona was still his responsibility, so her damage was his damage if he liked it or not. Now, he just needed to know if it was damage plus her death, which would require a recovery of her body due to the technology she was built from, or if she made it back in some form with the plant hopefully.

Iona
HP: 0
Cnd: Bruised (-3 to DCs); Fatigued; Hearing Impaired

With her auditory sensors still impaired, Iona is uncertain whether people around her can hear her speak. She compensates by trying to speak louder than she normally does.

The black vapor is rising up from the back of the van, threatening to harm Duncan, John and even Sergeant Kreppler if it make it that far. "Sergeant!..." Iona yells, "lower the windows and turn the fan on maximum! We need outside air to ventilate the fumes."

With the metal cylinder in hand, the young cyborg sees the sizzling regions where the container is being dissolved. Looking to removed the corrosive as quickly as possible the begins to rub off the acid with nearby fabric.
OOC: Ok, I have no idea if any rags, towels, blankets, or articles of clothing are lying about the van. That would be ideal if any were. If not, then Iona will have to make due with the cloth seats inside the van. I'm going out on a limb and assuming that they are not leather. :) But even if they are leather, they'll have to do if no other fabrics are available. The goal is to wipe the exterior until it's as clean as possible. Then Iona will wrap it in some dry, uncontaminated article of clothing (even if she has to remove it from her own body). Yep...the Attractive 2 cyborg will unclothe in order to provide the materials needed to preserve the container if she must. :o
OOC: Here is Iona's Expertise: Science roll: Supernaturalist: D20 + 15 → 22(7 + 15). So, a total of 22.
Realizing that Kreppler cannot control any windows in the latter half of the van, Iona calls out to John to slide open the door in the back of the van.

When she removes the cylinder wrapped in clothing, it continues to fizzle as the corrosive starts to slowly dissolve the fabric. Fortunately she recognizes the chemical nature of the acid and what it will take to neutralize it.
OOC: Since a weak base is needed to neutralize the acid, I might note that water and ammonia are weak bases. Also, anti-freeze is a base (although a strong one if it is not diluted). When Iona entered the van, did she notice if there were any bottled waters or car maintenance fluids like anti-freeze, windshield cleaner, or any other cleaner for the interior of a vehicle?
Here's Iona's most recent Toughness check: Supernaturalist: D20 + 9 → 25(16 + 9).
So, a 25. She succeeds. Perhaps the clothing provided enough of a buffer to prevent it from damaging her.
Here is Iona's latest Expertise: Science roll in order to discern a way to contain/trap the black, vapors inside the van: Supernaturalist: D20 + 15 → 30(15 + 15). So, a total of 30.

Duncan, Iona, John

Duncan and Iona yell to get Sergeant Kreppler's attention. There is no response from the aging soldier at the wheel.

Looking around, there is no loose objects in the back of the van. That being the case Iona strips down to her underwear. If she weren't covered in horrible bullet wounds and oozing blood she would have been stunning beyond words. As it was, the half naked android was merely jaw dropping beautiful. The bloodstained clothes are then put to use protecting her hands and covering the acid covered metal cylinder that the VIridi Mater is contained in. Immediately there is a sizzling sound and black smoke rises up from the mass of clothes. Rapidly the bullet hole ridden clothes dissolve in Iona's hands, blackening, then turning to a horrid goops that slips through her fingers and onto the floor.

Duncan remembers hearing that there was a medkit in the back where they were. A quick glance over the open space showed no loose items, but there were cupboards near the ceiling. Getting to his feet Duncan quickly opens the cupboards up. Inside one he stands a white pack with a red cross on it. The universal symbol for various metical services and fortunately first aid kits. Garbing it he opens the pack a shifts through it. There! He see that it contains some disinfectant. Just what he needed.
OOC wrote:If Iona wasn't as beaten up and as she is, I'd make John and Duncan roll Will to resist staring at her for a round. She IS supernaturally attractive.

Water won't neutralize the acid. Fortunately Duncan found some disinfectant in the medkit. Just enough to thoroughly douse the Vidi Mater's container. Even after I increased the DC, because you are using Perception to search instead of Investigation.

John still needs to actually open the van door. Just telling him to doesn't mean that he has. If he doesn't, then Duncan and John will need to make another DC 16 Fortitude check at the end of this round. Bear in mind, however, a van spewing black smoke will draw attention and Stronghold is on super-high alert. It will be noticed and you will enter another chase scenario.

Iona took her clothes off and used them to wrap up the container. It isn't helping. I told you it wouldn't. They're corroded and grose now. Now there are more fumes. Every round Iona continues to hold onto the acid covered container she will need to make a DC 21 Toughness check.

The van's flooring continues to be eaten away by the acid Iona poured out onto it. -1 to future Damage resistance.

The Viridi Mater's container is holding out ... for now.

Diego

Tilly turns to face Diego when he speaks up. She starts initially, upon seeing the menacing black cloud of nanites hovering in the air. The woman collects herself, but it is apperant he unnerves her. Diego unnerves everyone. She is quiet, holding her tongue, until Diego has finished speaking. While she might be more casual in private, they were in public with Diego's subordinates all around them. Now she spoke in a professional capacity.

"Carter Howell. He's one of the First Generation. I know him. Thought he died in the war. Mr. Steiner and I pulled him out of a firefight with Stronghold. Carter was messed up, so I brought him back here for medical attention. He's your troublemaker. Didn't know he was working with Dr. Sokolov though."

There is fustration in Tilly's voice when she talks about Carter and how he is a troublemaker. But it lacks hostility. Whent he topic moves away fro Dr. Sokolov's agent, and to the rest of Diego's field team, Sander overs a subtle shake of the head.

"Ms. Iona and Mr. Steiner have not returned. I anticipated some trouble might arise, so I sent Sergeant Kreppler to meet them on the way back. He has picked them up. There was word of some difficulties involving the package requiring them to take a long route back."

Duncan Redwood

Grabbing the disinfectant from the Emergency kit, the Botanist will immediately go over to where Iona has the Mater and pour it over the Container, covering as much of it as he can. He'll smack Stiener on the Shoulder, point to the empty case the the Van door & makes the "out it goes" thumb motion....
Move Action to cover the Viridi Mater with the Disinfectant.

Realizing that the fumes could prove very dangerous to her teammates, and that Duncan is in the process of using the chemical disinfectant as a reactant to nullify the acid on the specimen case, Iona rapidly envisions a possible way to filter the air inside the van.

Grabbing a handheld vacuum that she sees in a nearby cupboard and instructing John to grab her gauze, rubber bands, and various other items from drawers and cabinets in the van, she proceeds to construct a makeshift chemical "scrubber".

Nevermind that she was doing all this naked. Typically the very modest type, she didn't hesitate to de-clothe when she thought it was needed. In hindsight it didn't work, but there is no time to brood over failed attempts. She focuses on the job at hand lest her comrades go unconscious (or worse...perish) from the black fumes.
