Diego

This first thing you notice after taking a serious accounting of your environment is yourself. Or rather that you aren't yourself. It feels like you are who you are supposed to be, but you doesn't see or feel Diego. You aren't a black mass of nanites coalescing into a liquid humanoid shape. You feel powerful machine strength. Not just bodily, but mentally. Everything is small compared to your vastness, yet you perceive everything. Down to the very atom. The villagers and their assailants in power armor seem equally primitive. Equally weak and fragile. You wear armor, it was different from that worn by the black suits, significantly more advanced. Even still, it might as well have been ornamental.

At the same time you are still yourself, mentally. It is as though there are answers to every question you could ever ask in you head. All you have to do was reach for them. But you don't. Or can't. As if there was a thin separation between the Ascendant of Deception and this Other. It was something you experienced vaguely after your Ascension. Being connected to something distant, greater, but shut off from it. Thinking about it, that has always been there post-Ascension.

As you walks to the village you notice that the black armored combatants have formed a perimeter around the village. They're looking inwards. Intent on keeping people inside rather than concerned about external threats. You also note, looking more closely, that their weapons have an under barrel attachment. There is a wick of flame at the end, like igniters for flame throwers. The armored assailants herd the people like cattle. The villagers are manhandled,. Their struggles, attempts at dialog, and shouts are ignored in the process.

You approach one of the black clad individuals and address them. While the query's nature is as you intended, your words are different. Your voice is different. Warm and human, filled with simulated emotion. Rich is authority and presence. Another piece of ornamentation. The proper words and tones used to evoke the proper response. Like a chemical formula. The soldier stops, passes their hostage off to a comrade, and stand stiffly while making their response. Their voice is filtered through their helmet, making them sound mechanical and gender neutral.

"The settlement has been secure. Quarantine perimeter in effect. Priority cases are being moved to the center of the village. Subject CX-21 is in that domicile and is being kept away from the others."

With a gestures to one of the huts. It looks like all the others. Except there is a power armor clad guard at the door.

OOC: Here's Iona's DC 20 Will Save: Will Save vs. Illusion: 1d20+6 15. So, a 15. She did not make it and thus believes in what she senses. I have added one HP.
The new sensations are so sudden and so real that the young cyborg forgets - for a moment- everything about her mission: The Jaguar base, her teammates, her vow to acquire technology for Dr. Sokolov, everything. The wonder of what is happening overtakes her. She steps forward walking slowly through the foliage, looking and listening in amazement at an environment that she has only read about and never experienced.

After about a minute or so, however, her reason begins to sober her up. Jungles are full of life, some benign and some hostile. Death can come quickly in the jungle for those who are not wary.
OOC: A Perception Roll looking for beasts of even people in her nearby environment: Perception Roll in the "Jungle".: 1d20+10 14. So, a 14 total.

It couldn't be. Had the Jaguar's found something to tap into the same energies Praetor Null had? Diegos mind was powerful, but the telepath couldn't be ruled out. He had been in dreamscapes before as his previous fleshly form while navigating the storm ascendents dream scapes for clues on what was going on with the lightening outside. Maybe this was his triggered by something else?

These soldiers, whatever they were had setup a quarantine with absolute will to keep it. Diego would have asked nothing less of his forces if this was real and he was still whatever he had become. So check. Such measures might have sickened him before losing his human connections, now it was pawns moving other pawns on the chess board.

He had come in search of a weapons dealer, but this trip was turning out to be something more than he had bargained. A long suppressed feeling was pulling him for something more in this mindscape or illusion. When faced with a gulf you didn't know about three was two options, run or try to see if you can find a way to bridge it. A weapons dealer might come from this, but if Diego could get answers it would be limitless possibilities potentially.

"Keep up the good work.", remarks Diego. He chose to press ahead. Aware something was amiss, Diego had learned to not discount the out of the range of normal. Pressing ahead, he moves with the air of his position that he felt he had in this mindscape. Lacking any other clues, Diego heads to examine CX-21. If the guard gave any indications of resistence, Diego would treat them like any other guard. Listen and depending on the contents press ahead.

As he moves, he looks over the souls being moved for any signs of disease, infection, or anything to give him an idea of what awaited him in the house.

Diego

You look at the villagers for symptoms that fall in line with infection. They are sweating and flushed. Though they are also struggling to resist the herding hands of the invaders. You look deeper. Past skin, to muscle and sinew. Deeper. Bone and organs, veins and nerves. Deeper. To the cellular level. There you see the blight afflicting the primitives. Though minute in scale the virus works with a purpose, harvesting the host body for recourses. Converting materials into more of itself. Changing the bodies it inhabited. It worked like an army plundering a foreign land, recruiting from the populace, and using local recourses to bolster it's war machine.

You follow the logistical lines of the infection and see it spreading beyond the human hosts. It road their breaths out into the air. It seeped from their pores in sweat, infecting the cloths they wore. The ground they treed upon. The plants that took nourishment from the soil. Nothing was spared. Everything, living and inanimate, became blighted. Harvested or changed. You could see containment had already been breached. It would spread. There was no physical means of holding the hostile microbes at bay. Drastic action would have to be taken before the blight reached a critical mass and exploded into the skies.

All of this was taken in and processed in a glance. It took him longer to walk to the dirt-hut. The guard at the door straightens as you approach, but does not halt your passage. The interior of the structure is unlit, but this does not hinder your perception. The floor is dirt, but swept. The space is open, a single room. At the center is a firepit. There are spaces for a pair of counters with drawers. A single chest with a lock rests at the foot of a bed built low to the ground. It is large, enough that you might expect a small family to share it. Only one person occupies it now. A young woman.

Her skin is as dark as you have ever seen human flesh. Her hair is black and her eyes are brown. Black fluid leaks from her pores, thick with the virus. It is viscus and moves slowly. Her breaths come raggedly and she mumbles in a breath voice. You feel it, what your looking for. That missing piece of yourself. You hear the ticking of clocks. The churning of gears. The pounding of pistons. The buzz of generators. The thrum of dynamic power from an multitude of machines that are all one machine. It is inside her.

Iona

Bird twitter not to far off. A repeated sound from up in the lofty trees. You are caught up in the natural beauty around you, but marshal youself, reminded of the predators that call the jungle home. Steeling yourself you take your obsidian tipped spear into both hands and move cautiously. Senses primed. To your left you hear a twig snap. You turn quickly to face the sound. But you are looking in the wrong direction. From above and behind a large stalky feline form descends upon you, fangs bared. It's weight and natural weapons drag you towards the leaf strew floor.

Diegos first instinct at the infection spreading rapidly was to sanitize the area with high yield explosives, preferably atomic in nature. "Take off and nuke it from orbit. It was the only way to be sure.", as one of his buddies outside of Hadron City during the war used to say. Not that Diego said that to anyone in this mindscape. He had seen a virus like this previously at the hospital. One of his failures was not to follow up with it more to ensure it didn't penetrate Hadron City.

Once his mind at a speed unknown to him had started its analysis of the atomic structure ad rate of infection, it jumped to military means of containment and various protocols. Since everyone was infected, if martial means were a viable path, burning everyone in atomic fire while he safely left was the only recourse he could imagine. He also didn't discount that this was a manifestation of his unerlying worry about the disease let loose from the hospital. The Jaguars may have captured a specimen and started experimenting. So many possibilities, but none mattered now.

Once inside the hut, his mind changed priorities. He kept a firm and militaristic posture. His voice commanding. The woman before him might have been one of the family, might not have been. Maybe a daughter or young spouse. Her past didn't interest Diego. What was inside her drew him like a magnet. Like a puzzle needing that last piece, here it was before his eyes. An evil demon maybe sending these signals, but he was in. See it through. His eyes scanned the dark woman hoping to dig deep with his gaze for any hint of what he desired, nay needed. As he scanned, he spoke to her. "What are you and what secrets do you hold inside you?", asks Diego. His mindscape(?) eyes focused on the young woman he might need to tear open.

OOC: Here is Iona's Will Save: Will Save vs Rank 25 DC: 1d20+6 19. So, a 19. She also gets -1 due to her penalty to Damage Checks making it an 18. Two Degrees of Failure. Iona now has -2 to further Damage Checks and she is Dazed until the end of her next turn.
OOC: Here is Iona's Dodge Check: Dodge Check vs. Grapple: 1d20+8 11. So, an 11. She is wrestled to the ground.
OOC: Here is Iona's Initiative roll: Initiative vs. "Big Cat": 1d20 14. So, a 14. The beast gets to go first.
Out of her element and unprepared for the predator's ambush, Iona is hammered to the ground under the weight of whatever beast has chosen to attack her. Barely able to hold onto the spear, she is in a poor position to return an attack. Lying prone under the weight of her attacker, she struggles to either regain her feet or wedge the spear point between herself and her attacker.
OOC: Question: Does Iona still have her powers (and the memory of her powers)? I'm not sure how much the illusion has "messed with" Iona's sense of reality and who she is. If she does, then I'll probably opt to use one of her powers instead of the weapon when it is her turn.

Iona

You are pushed face first down into the ground. The scent of moist soil fills you nostrils and dirt and leaves are plastered to you skin. Behind you, on your back, is the oppressive weight of your attacker. Claws dig into your shoulders and thighs, Piercing pair. There is a snarl behind you as you feel hot fetid smelling breath on the back of your neck. Then more pain as fangs sink into the flesh of your shoulder.
OOC wrote:Iona believes the spear is her best offensive weapon.

Make another DC 25 Will save to resist the Damage Effect.

At the end of your turn make a DC 20 Will check. If you make the check you will realize you are in the underground ruins, not a jungle, and that this jaguar attacking you is not a real jaguar. But Iona will still sense everything as though it were real.

Diego

The girl's eyes open when you speak to her. She looks in your general direction. The source of the sound of your voice. She speaks in a low, weak voice. You understand what she is saying, the the Ascendant of Deception isn't practiced in it. The Other has no difficulty with the translation. She's asking for help.
OOC wrote:You may make a Language check if you want to try to determine what language the girl is speaking. The DC is 15. If you make the DC you will be able to determine it is isiZulu. Which is mainly spoken in Zululand of the Natal Province in Southern Africa.
You intently study the woman and see a wound in her chest. Not a physical wound. Her energetic resonance field: biochemical reactions, electrical impulses, heat ... other things that Diego couldn't grasp but the Other takes in at a glance. Where these intersect the physical there is a tear and it is bleeding energy.

The physical is what you are drawn to though. Beyond her clothes, beyond flesh, muscle, and behind ribs, nestled in the girl's chest is a jagged fragment of something. It move, shifting shape. One second it appears to be a piece of a broken gear. The next the broken armor of a clock. After that it changes to a cracked circuit board. Your mind cannot conscience of the object inside the girl, so it shows you what you can understand: a fragment form continues to shift and change. Always a fragment. A broken piece of a machine. It thrums with power. It glows without radiance. It wants to be part of you, and you need it to help fill in empty spaces inside yourself.

There is more. The Fragment has been compromised. The infection polluting the girl's body had taken hold of the Fragment. It is being harvested by the virus. Used to create a stronger strains. Fortunately the Fragment hasn't been changed, twisted, or perverted by the microbes. They didn't have that potential. Not yet. In time ...

The language made sense to Diego. It was one of the more random ones he sort of picked up on that he'd never think he'd use. Now, it told him roughly where this was. The Ascendent of Storms had a similar vision of an object. While his interactions with it had been minimal after retrieving the object, it doubtless increased in power. The eye made it more whole. Diego's yearning for being whole crept up on him as well now. Was he causing chaos in his physical body? Was this just a telepathic image? If a telepathic image, the telepath would suffer immensely.

This all might just be a sign the Jaguars have what he needs. This gear or circuit or whatever it truly was called to him. He just needed to reach out and grab it. The girl was a vessel. A pawn. Diego was a king. Pawns gladly should sacrifice for the king and queen, so his next actions reflected the sacrifice any pawn should make on demand. He reached in to pull out the object splitting the ribs apart as if they were nothing or trying to at the very least.

Fear. Frantic fear. Nearly immobilized by the weight of the beast on her back, Iona was in an unfavorable position to say the least. She knew very little about Jaguars. Only a cursory attention had been paid to such creatures while the young cyborg devoured all the information she could about the outside world after her creation.

She knew that once their prey was constrained, what followed was a single crushing bite to the skull. Relative to their body weight, they had the strongest bite of any feline. She had to break free now or die.
OOC: Here is Iona's 2nd Will Save vs Damage: Damage Check vs Jaguar Attack: 1d20+10 26.
A 26, so a success...finally. Here is Iona's Will Check to become aware of the Underground Ruins: Will Check to "See" Underground Ruins: 1d20+6 22. So, a 22. A Success. She is now aware of her location. Does this affect combat in any way? I'll make an Attack Roll for Iona, if necessary. She has "close combat" at rank 4. Here's the roll: Spear Attack Vs. Jaguar: 1d20+4 16. So, a total of 16. If that hits, I'm not sure what the Damage rank is.
Squirming to make some room to stab at the big cat, Iona attempts to thrust the spear into the beast's belly.

OOC wrote:Iona is still holding a spear, but she doesn't have that "this is my best offensive option" mindset imprinted on her.

OOC, that is exactly what it represented, however: Iona's best offensive option for her circumstances. She instinctively triggered her Damage AoE when she uses the "spear".

Squirming without any finesse you manage to roll over onto your back. With a violent thrust he stab your spear into the jaguar, using both hands as it rears back to swipe at you. The spear goes through the jaguar. The world around you warps, melts, then explodes in blue-white light. The light is coming from you. The jungle burns away into the electrical storm radiating from your body. You are once again back in the underground ruins of industrial fabrication building. The overhead lights have been shorted out. You are in darkness. But darkness isn't an obstacle to you.

Your companion, Diego, is nowhere to be seen. But you hear a voice in the distance. It is somehow familiar. The voice is coming from a room at the end of the hallway you are is. The door is ajar. You can just make out what is being said.

"What are you and what secrets do you hold inside you?"

Diego

You plunge you hands into the girl's chest. It was easy as moving your hand through arm. Warm wet blood glosses your hand as it buried into the girl body. He lets out a horse scream in response to the attack. Her hand weakly clutch at your forearm as he looks at you with desperation in her dark eyes.

As you get closer to the Fragment you meet resistance. The virus fights for it, rallying around their treasure and forming a grotesque bulwark against your assault. Biological material from the girl's body is rapidly altered to fit this need. You grasp for the Fragment, and ribbons of acidic razors crawl up your fingers, around your wrist and up you arm, erupting out of the girls chest in a tide of black tentacles.

Diego went for the item as if the human host was not a living person. He suspected a mindscape of some sort, but even if the person was truly alive it wouldn't have changed anything. One person of little importance, as best he could tell, verses the power of the object wasn't even a contest. Her cringes didn't even make him flinch. What did make him flinch was how stubborn and painful the virus was being. If there was an evil demon planting these ideas in Diegos mind, they would be dealt with quickly.
Dodge 26
Toughness 9...yeah no

Any sign Diego thinks he can get the fragment out if he persists in pulling?

What is this place used for? The female cyborg quickly regains her awareness of where she is. Little time is left to wonder as she looks around for signs of her teammates. When she hears the faint voice from the end of the hallway, she perks up realizing it may be the Ascendant.

Without delay she heads out of the dark room down the hallway to the door. Standing outside the room, she pushes the door open the rest of the way.

The door swings open, creaking on damaged hinges. The world around you blurs and warps like an paint thinner poured over an oil painting. The ruins melt away, dripping off the tapestry of the world. Washed away. In it's place you find yourself standing to the door of a primitive dry, hardened dirt hut with a thatch roof. Peering inside she sees the back of a tall masculine figure with broad shoulders ending in gold trimmed black pauldrons. His head is exposed. What you can see of his skin is white and unblemished, though you only see him from the back.

A thick cloak falls from the man's shoulders, matching the black and gold color scheme. He stands over a young woman on a bed, his armored hand thrust into her ripped open chest. A mass of oozing, bladed, black tendrils extend out of the girl's chest, coiling up the length of the man's arm.

Overhead is a clear night's sky. The moon is large and bright. The air is hot and dry. Behind you there is the sound of activity. There are shouts in a language you do not understand. Scared and angry voices. Dark skinned villagers are being herd to the center of the village by people black power armor, and bearing advanced weaponry. Mag-rifles with flamethrower under barrel attachments. At the center if the village is a large bonfire, crackling, and casting orange-yellow illuminance over the dry scrubland.

This evil demon could make Diego think he was being hurt. For all he knew, it would manifest actual damage. Perhaps it was thinking that he was weak and cared for these soldiers or the woman who he jabbed his hand into. Maybe, they were just toying with him. No matter what it is was, Diego knew what he had to do and virus manifested by an evil demon aside he was going to get his objective. Plus, if the virus was somehow ties to whoever was triggering this mindscape, perhaps they could be hurt as well. Praetor Null had seen to it that Diego was made tough. All weakness purged in the fires of his transformation.

With his hand firmly around the fragment, he taps into whatever power this Other had to burn the mind of whoever was playing with him in addition to keeping this fragment safe. The fragment he knew he had to get one way or the other like a man knows he needs his heart to live. Viruses, no matter the makeup burned. Everything burned. From his hand first and then up his body as he felt the power start flowing. He looked through the analytical eyes of the Other as waves of flames shot from his first burning the woman and the virus using her as a host. He didn't want to stop their though. Digging more into the power, he pushed to extend the flames to the surrounding area as well to purge the virus and maybe the mind poisoning this mindscape.

As a man, Diego may have held back. Unsure of his potential as an ascendant, he may have had doubts. Now, he had experience with his powers when out of the mind scape and he mental fortitude that went with them. The evil demon had made a mistake messing with him and was going to pay. The fragment was going to be his and the virus was going to be purged. The spreading flame would be fueled by his iron will and absolute devotion to seeing the world unified in harmony under Praetor Null so it might be able to fight back whatever was coming for it. Of his full purpose, Diego was certain. No evil demon was going to get in his way.

Diego

As you struggle with the rampant infection you are vaguely aware of the guard entering the hut. Checking on the motion that has arisen. They do not have time to react before you take decisive, final, action. The world burned. As far as the eye could see there was molten ruin

Iona

The armored man is briefly struggles with the mass of black limbs constricting around his limb. In that struggle you see a face that you recognize from newsfeeds, propaganda posters, and statues. Emblazoned in gold on his left pauldron: a lidless eye in the palm of a vertically positioned hand, fingers pointing up. It was the visionary, Imperator.

With a flex of his arm Imperator lifts the girl clutching to his limb and the monstrous growth sprawling out from the wound in her chest. It seemed an effortless motion. A light blossomed from the wound. Blinding starlight. Plasma that turned to flame. The body burned to ash, and the ash became nothing.

The mass of tentacles, linked at a vaguely spherical center, endured. Writhing. Madly assaulting the armored figure. Though alien aberration endured longer than the girl, it too succumbed as star-fire erupted from in in volcanic bursts. Once the energetic explosion breached it's initial victims, it spread more rapidly. You armor stripped away. You flesh burned. You died. You could feel yourself die.

OOC wrote:Supernaturalist, since Diego used the nuclear option, you may disregard the check I asked for in my previous post. Instead make a DC 20 Dodge check, followed by a DC 25 Will check. DC 20 if the Dodge was successful. This is a Damage Effect.

In the blurry after image of a heat haze both Iona and Diego come to their senses. They find themselves in a large vat container. Empty, except for themselves. There is a chaotic, jagged, hole in one section. Scorch marks, puncturing holes, and slash marks mar the container. Overhead is machinery used for stirring the contents of the large round container you are in.

Diego is standing over a hole in the ground, several hundred feet deep. In his hand he clutches a oily black heart. Soundlessly it beats in his hand. The Ascendant alone can hear the deafening workings of countless machines. Just as only he feel the connection of something lost now found. Strangely, he feels the ache of electrical burns as well.
