CAPRICORN III (Life Model Decoy)

Steve Englehart & Al Milgrom
First Appearance: West Coast Avengers #26 (Nov. 1987)
Role: Animalistic Girl
Group Affiliations: The Zodiac Cartel
PL 7 (96)
STRENGTH
7 STAMINA -- AGILITY 3
FIGHTING 7 DEXTERITY 2
INTELLIGENCE 0 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE 0

Skills:
Acrobatics 3 (+6)
Athletics 4 (+11)
Deception 3 (+3)
Intimidation 5 (+5)
Perception 7 (+7)

Advantages:
Improved Critical (Hooves), Improved Initiative, Power Attack, Ranged Attack 2, Set-Up, Teamwork

Powers:
"Life Model Decoy"
Immunity 30 (Fortitude Effects) [30]
Protection 7 [7]
"Enhanced Climbing" Skills 4: Athletics 4 (+15) (Flaws: Limited to Climbing) [1]

Flight 5 (60 mph) (Flaws: Winged) [5]
"Hooves" Strength-Damage +0 (Feats: Penetrating 5) [5]

Offense:
Unarmed +7 (+7 Damage, DC 22)
Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +7 (DC 17), Parry +7 (DC 17), Toughness +7, Fortitude --, Will +2

Complications:
Motivation (Power)- The LMD Zodiacs are goons, plain and simple.
Vulnerable (Magnetic Attacks)- As LMDs, the Zodiac are made of metal, and are prone to magnetic assault.
Weakness (Outside Their Dimension)- The LMDs will shut down without access to Zodiacal Energy from our dimension- inter-dimensional travel will shut most of them down.
Responsibility (Zodiac Nature)- The LMD Zodiacs were extremely focused onto their particular sign's habits and nature. This made Capricorn extremely similar to whatever Capricorns are.

Total: Abilities: 24 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 48 / Defenses: 6 (96)

-So in the next appearance, Englehart just decides to remake some Zodiac members, and Capricorn's male form is turned into a hairy, goat-legged female. Pretty much another fairly limited Melee Fighter amongst a group of them. In one appearances, she tackles Iron Man alongside Scorpio & Aquarius, and Iron Man states that since they're LMDs, they're not alive and don't matter, and so he uses his full strength and one-punches Capricorn into dozens of pieces (hence, most of these losers are PL 7s). THIS from a guy's who's VISION's friend. She was promptly rebuilt and sent against the Avengers again, but was deactivated with the rest of them.

-This Capricorn could fly for whatever reason, and was a good climber.

What's the value in being a good climber if you can fly?

"This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius! Age of Aquarius! Age of Aquariusssssssssss!!!"

AQUARIUS
Stereotypes:
Intelligent, Objective, Idealist, Erratic/Class Clown, Stubborn, Lazy

-Aquarius… seems like it should be easy, but they rarely just make a water guy, and when they do, they give him a HOSE. A couple of the middle ones were, but the others were just generic.

-Y'know, when I think of "Aquarius", I would think of a guy with water-based powers. But not THIS guy. No, he's just a ripped guy in a belly-shirt who punches people. Yeah, not much of a super-villain. He was a meaningless part of the original team, but showed up in an Iron Man arc with a smaller group, dealing with some side characters. He nearly beat Madame Masque in combat, but Nick Fury & Daredevil (who'd also gotten involved for some reason) knocked him out.

-In the pages of Gary Friedrich & Tony Isabella's Ghost Rider, Aquarius learned that he was dying of cancer, exacerbated by the story where Taurus sent him and his teammates into space for attempting a coup. Appealing to those above for help, he was overheard by the demon Slifer (under the orders of Mephisto), who granted him the powers of the rest of the Zodiac Cartel for one full year- after which, his soul belonged to Slifer. Figuring he was damned anyways, and wanting revenge, Aquarius agreed and engaged in a rampage. He amassed evidence that would put Taurus in prison forever, then planned on moving on to the Avengers- he was halted by Ghost Rider & Stuntmaster, whom he captured (knocking both out with the Zodiac Key as "Scorpio"), then fought again when they escaped- he kept them on their guard by transforming into the Zodiac members one at a time, keeping the heroes on their guard. However, he had been tricked- ultimately going through each member of the Zodiac, he had "gone through a Zodiacal year", and Slifer appeared to take him to Hell. Screaming at the deception, Aquarius was helpless, and has never reappeared. He was replaced by both an LMD and a human being.

-A PL 6 weakling, Aquarius is a good fighter and pretty strong, but that's his ONLY gimmick. He would fail solo against any other comic book martial artist.

Re: Jab’s Builds (Virgo! Taurus! Cancer! Capricorn! Aquarius!)

Post by greycrusader »

It seems the better-designed original Zodiac members are those that debuted solo, outside the main Avengers storyline: Aries, Aquarius, Gemini, and Scorpio, with the exception perhaps being Libra. Though Scorpio has since been replaced, resurrected, retconned, and re-retconned so much the character is now a complete mess.

I think one way to make them work in the modern era would be to look at the inspirations behind the names-Capricorn as perhaps a chimeric shape-shifter (perhaps even a descendant of Greek Gods) or an horned Atlantean mutant, Virago as an immortal living statue (invoking the story of Galatea) or having solar-based powers (the myth figure was "Star-Virago"), and so on. Or invoke characteristics associated with the signs rather than taking them literally-have Leo be a master tactician/leader ("king") and hand to hand fighter, armed with vibranium weapons looted from Wakanda.

Otherwise-sort of astounding the Zodiac Gang have been jobbers for going on fifty years!

All my best.

Jabroniville wrote: Thu Jul 22, 2021 5:24 am The main issue here is that the Zodiac features TWO GOATS, even though there's only twelve. Like seriously, could they not have chosen a Wolf or a Spider or something for one of them?
Aries is a ram
Capricorn is a fish goat thing

Kinda like saying that crabs and fish are the same thing?

But that does bring up how do two fish balance against a goat fish thing.

Yeah, the ancients were weird.
Yeah, I knew that (though it doesn't show up on every astrology chart), but it's still goat-adjacent when there's tons of other animals they could have used. Weirder still that all of the Zodiac members who were Capricorns were just generic goat-folks.

-Aquarius II was a slightly smarter, tech-savvy type of guy with a laser weapon, and an actual "Water" theme- he tended to use equipment or inventions that utilized water and stuff. Still a weakling, though. He joined the Cartel in the interim, replacing the original, and Taurus asked him to help defeat Iron Man (James Rhodes). Aquarius laid a few traps along with his minions, trying to drown Rhodey, Tony Stark and some others in a room, but Iron Man freed himself and defeated Aquarius, arresting him. He later appears with the rest of the Cartel in West Coast Avengers, where he dies with the rest of the group.

-Aquarius II is just a guy with some equipment.

-LMD Aquarius was a grumpy loner who didn't like helping his buddies, as Aquarians are supposed to be, I guess (I never put to much stock in that Astrology argle-bargle anyhow). He was mostly just a backgrounder, and was rendered inert like the others were.

-Aquarius III has a Water Gun, plus the ability to shoot Electricity.

Have 'Leo' claim to be 'the chief in exile' of a 'banned Lion clan' from Wakanda with some vibranium weapons and Black Panther like abilities, only for T'Challa to say, 'WTF? We never *had* a 'Lion clan...'" and it later come out that he's either A) completely mental and it's all made up (but where did the vibranium come from?) or B) he's from an alternate universe, where there *was* a Lion clan, and his Wakanda was destroyed by a failed attempt to overthrow it and reclaim his clan's position, only to leave his Wakanda vulnerable to it's enemies and be ravaged by invaders out to pillage it's vibranium reserves instead.

Or make Pisces be an Atlantean mutant who does piracy for a living (they're outcast from Atlantis), and has the power to turn into their weight in fish, either a school of smaller fish for a getaway, or a pair of 80 lb. barracuda during a fight (retaining their 10 ton Atlantean strength and toughness, so barracuda from hell!).

Anything but 'crimelord with no powers' or 'LMD with no personality...' :)

-Pisces is the water-themed guy of the Zodiac Cartel, being a Miami-based crimelord with a focus on underwater combat. His costume is a full-body one, making him look slightly less lame than most of his comrades- sorta like an uglier version of Triton from the Inhumans. As a character, he was a nobody- just some random guy who did nothing in backgrounds. He is killed by the LMD attack on the squad.

-He's not much to look at stats-wise, but he's more dangerous underwater, for those tricky swimming guys. His costume grants him several benefits to that effect, and he's quite good in combat under there. He just lacks the physical "oomph" of many other Zodiac members.
