The first two Sentai lacked giant robos, but had access to "flying fortresses", the Variblune/Varidorin, and the Sky Ace. They also had a few extra gadgets and smaller vehicles (The Gorengers even had a really weird hot-air balloon)

Complications

Personality - Kenji is a brash, hot-headed warrior, who, due to his immaturity, tends to not think things through.

Power Loss (Transformation) - The Gorenger Suits require a calm, focused mind. Heavy emotions stop the necessary electrical charge from going through.

Responsibility (Green Senshi) - As the first in the long line of Sentai Greens, Midorenger feels an intrinsic duty to defend the Earth and mentor the next generation of heroes.

Background: Kenji Asuka, the Midorenger. One of the five survivors of the Black Cross Army's massacre of EAGLE's Japan Bases, he was recruited by EAGLE's Japan Leader, Commander Edogawa, into the Gorengers, Earth's best chance against the enhanced forces of the Black Cross Army. As the Gorengers' hot-headed, quick-footed warrior, Kenji helped save the world, beginning the legacy of the Super Sentai, defending Earth for nearly half a century, engaging in the Great Legend War against the Zangyack Empire, and battling against and alongside the Sentai's brothers-in-arms, the Kamen Riders.

Notes: Midoranger comes out as a solid PL 10 mixed fighter, hitting full PL both at range and with melee, and even with their active defenses. Despite these solid stats, they're fairly lacking in terms of skills, lacking either the spy skills of Aka or Momo, the piloting skills of Ao, or even the mechanical know-how of Ki. This, combined with their lack of tact and their brash nature, leaves them the most vulnerable on their own. Don't underestimate him, though, the kid's got potential.

The Variblune and Varidorin aren't that different and can be pretty easily interchanged. The only real difference is that the Varidorin is supposed to be a bit faster (Flight +1), and Variblune looks like a bulldog. They are pretty solid flying fortresses, incredibly durable with high-damage weaponry, with a good concealment effect to make escapes, and a far-reaching mandible to manipulate objects.

Legacy - Keisuke is a member of the Seven Legendary Riders, making him a legend among legends in his heroic community.

Background: Keisuke Jin, the X-Rider. The son of robotics expert Keitaro Jin was fatally wounded alongside his father while attempting to protect him from the Government of Darkness, yet another organization of villainous cyborgs hellbent on taking over the world, who intended to use Keitaro's expertise and advancements in the field for their purposes. Keitaro, not wanting his son to die, performed the "Kaizorg Surgery", turning his son into a powerful cyborg, the X-Rider. Seeking revenge, X-Rider began his battle against the Government of Darkness, eventually befriending his Rider predecessors, and becoming part of the Kamen Rider legacy.

Notes: This build represents Kamen Rider X's modern appearances, in the various Heisei Era Rider anniversary movies, the Super Hero Taisen, and the Showa vs Heisei War, where he was a central character, helping Takumi Inui, Kamen Rider Faiz, get over his guilt of the various deaths in his wake, including that of his fellow Rider, Kaixa. Like the Riders before him, he's quite a powerful build, with great accuracy, damage, and intelligence, with the addition of high-grade underwater capabilities. With Favored Environment & Movement (Aquatic), high-speed Swimming, and a potent Sonar system, the X-Rider would probably give even Aquaman a run for his money in terms of combat in their chosen environment.

This thread has been a very interesting read, man. I keep wanting to comment on it to find an excuse to compliment you on the builds, but I genuinely can't find anything to say due to how little I really know about the source material, so I figured I should just do a generic post for that, LOL.

Tokusatsu shows have always been something that seemed insanely interesting to me, but also something I have had very limited exposure to throughout the years, and something I mostly recognize from pop-culture osmosis from them being referenced in manga and anime and stuff, with the only stuff I've really actively consumed being some episodes of the early Gorenger series due to a review I watched of it back in high school, the Magirangers series (which I adore to death!) and some Kamen Rider Zero-One episodes (mostly due to the internet memes that spawned from it).

Reading the bios and the discussions about the shows here has been very fascinating due to that limited exposure. Keep up the good work on the builds! : D

Oh, this is awesome, I've been hoping you'd eventually check in on here! You're actually the person who's thread got me into the forum. I had been looking for MHA builds for a little game I'd been working on with one of my friends, and we used your builds for it (great work, btw). Complications

Personality - Daisuke is an innately kind and trusting man, who reaches out to befriend everyone he meets. He is incredibly defensive over those he sees as friends, and does not take kindly to that friendship being exploited.

Brutality - Raised in the Amazon Rainforest, Daisuke learned how to fight and kill to survive. He tends to dismember and brutalize his opponents in combat, a much more merciless death than the explosions caused by other Riders.

Power Loss - The GiGi Armlet is the source of Amazon's power. Though it is grafted onto his body, it can potentially be removed, taking away his powers and slowly killing him.

Legacy - As one of the Seven Legendary Riders, Amazon is a legend within his community.

Background: Daisuke Yamamoto, the Amazon Rider. The sole survivor of a plane crash in the Amazon Rainforest, young Daisuke was taken in and raised by an Incan tribe. In the year 1974, his tribe was massacred by Jyumenki Gorgos, the leader of Geddon, another organization aspiring for world domination, this time, through Incan science. Gorgos came searching for the GiGi Armlet, an artifact that wields incredible power, whose counterpart, the GaGa Armlet, he already wielded. Daisuke was granted the armlet by the dying leader of the tribe and used its power to become Amazon, and defeat Geddon. Allied with the mentor of the previous Kamen Riders, Tobei Tachibana, he would continue his fight against a second villain organization, the Garanda Empire, which attempted to succeed where Geddon failed, only to be disassembled by Amazon as well. With his mission completed, Amazon joined his fellow Riders, assisting their newest successor, Kamen Rider Stronger, in "finally" defeating the Great Leader, who is revealed to have been behind all their opposition. He, alongside the now fully-assembled Seven Legendary Riders, disperse into the world to continue defending it.

Notes: Amazon is, simply, an absolutely incredible high-speed Berserker build: Lower than average Strength for a Rider, but with greater speed, maneuverability, highly-dangerous natural weaponry, and a finisher technique with FULL PENETRATING, he can deal severe damage to nearly any foe. With the additional perks of highly-enhanced senses (including the rarely enhanced Touch), as well as significant ranks of Regeneration, Amazon is well-prepped to either outlast or tear apart the competition.

Glad we got to Daisuke. Based on his record, he might be one of the most brutally effective superheroes ever. Considering even a glancing blow from Amazon can tear his opponent wide open, and his willingness to use lethal force against any man or monster who shows evil intentions, he is one hero that rarely lets the villain get away, at least in one piece.

The above compilation showcases all of his kills from the original series. It says a lot that this show was cancelled for being too violent for 1970's Japanese television. Even making most of the monsters' blood orange-colored was not enough to stave off angry parents complaining about the gratuitous gore.

haha, that is cartoonishly gory. All the weird technicolor blood and high-pitched squealing, too- looks like they made the suits to be extra-disposable and just lit them up with gory stuff.

Complications

Personality - Shigeru is naturally jovial and eccentric, often engaging in casual conversation with mooks and monsters in the middle of battle. He tends to be a bit cocky in battle as well.

Relationships - Most of the people around Shigeru have died. His journey as a Rider began as a result of the death of a close friend, and he lost his partner, Yuriko Misaki, the Electro-Wave Human Tackle, in the battle against Black Satan. She's the one he misses the most.

Weakness - Shigeru's hands have been replaced by electrical coils, and he requires insulated gloves to avoid shocking everyone he comes in contact with.

Weakness - Stronger's Charge Up form, while powerful, comes with a volatile weakness. If he does not properly release his newly-acquired Super-Electro Energy within a minute of activation, he will self-destruct, unable to contain the power.

Background: Shigeru Jo, Kamen Rider Stronger. Following the death of a close friend at the hands of the terrorist organization Black Satan, Shigeru underwent the organization's cyborg surgery, duping them into believing he was unaware of their role in his friend's death. With an incredible amount of power, Shigeru immediately turned on Black Satan, and, alongside another of Black Satan's cyborgs, Yuriko Misaki, the Electro-Wave Human Tackle, escape from the facility and begin a war against Black Satan, mentored by the mentor of all previous Riders, Tobei Tachibana. After toppling Black Satan, the Great Leader, still around after all these years of battle, creates the Delza Army, and readies even more powerful monsters to complete his goals. Losing Tackle in a battle, and eventually undergoing a second surgery for a power boost, Stronger was joined by his predecessors in defeating the Rock Great Leader. It wouldn't be the end, however, as Stronger would appear in the future, continuing to protect the Earth from all manner of threats.

Notes: This build of Stronger is best exemplified in the various Super Hero Taisen, and the Showa vs Heisei Rider War, where he fell in a glorious battle against Kamen Rider Kabuto, fighting smart to counter the Rider's incredible speed. Like previous Riders, he hits fast, hard, and accurately, befitting a man with decades of experience in battle. His key feature, however, is his control over Electricity; it's applied to his unarmed strikes, and can fire it out through a variety of techniques; calling down Electro-Thunder from the sky, unleashing Electro-Fire in bursts and lines, and, of course, channeling it into his Den-Punch and Den-Kick. All this becomes even more dangerous when he activates "Charge Up", a massive power increase that comes with the dangerous caveat of potential self-destruction.

Complications

Personality - Originally a man with a forceful personality and penchant for violence, Takeshi was humbled under the sage Daibadatta. He will, on occasion however, slip back into his violent ways.
Power Loss - Use of the Rainbowman Powers drains a good amount of energy, and Takeshi will often be forced into his Regenerative Trance to recover from both the energy drain and accumulated damage.

Background: Takeshi Yamato, the Warrior of Love, Rainbowman. A skilled, if overly-violent wrestler, Takeshi sought training under the mythic sage Daibadatta after being booted from his wrestling career for nearly killing an opponent. Undergoing the sage's training, his mind was expanded and he learned to control the same mysterious energies as the sage, becoming Rainbowman. Returning to Japan with his newly-gained abilities, Takeshi would come up against the Die Die Gang, who sought revenge on Japan for its actions during WWII. Over the course of his battles, Takeshi's powers only increased, as did the odd opponents he came up against; evil cyborgs, supernatural entities, etc.

Notes: This build of Rainbowman probably best represents him near the end of his original series. A PL 9 with PL 10.5 Fortitude/Will defense, he's surprisingly capable considering his look. With his myriad of alternate forms, he's got a lot of potential, and a pretty potent Regeneration effect that activates when he enters a Trance. He's pretty vulnerable, however, at only a Toughness 6. He's not exactly going up against people on the level of the Kamen Riders, but he's well-off in his own right.

Very nice job on Rainbowman. Obviously a character that has seven (or eight if you include Takeshi as a normal human) forms is going to be very complex mechanically. I have a question about Waterman's powers; does the broad nullify allow him to control water (including freezing or turning it into mist) like in the show?

Rainbowman is a very interesting franchise. Created by Kōhan Kawauchi (pretty much the father of Tokusatsu superhero show), it was incredibly popular when it started airing in 1972, but also criticized for its pro-nationalist stance. The main villain Mr. K* and many of his subordinates were victims of war crimes by Imperial Japan in WWII, but instead of being played with any nuance or sympathy, they were grotesque caricatures of foreigners who would stoop to any low in order to exterminate the 'Yellow Monkeys' (Japanese people). When the show was remade into a giant robot anime in the early 1980's, this element of the story was thrown out and the enemies were transformed into evil invading aliens.

The character of Rainbowman was a direct influence on the creation of the video game character Mega Man. You can definitely see if once you know of it: the protagonist has multiple forms, each one with a distinct color scheme and possessing a special weapon/attack. It's more obvious in the original Mega Man because there were only six bosses, so combined with the original Mega Buster the hero had seven 'forms'. The staff of Capcom had even seriously considered naming Rock as 'Rainbow Man' or 'Rainbow Battle Kid' at one point, but backed off for one reason or another. The obvious one would be copyright concerns, but it seems more likely that 'Rainbow Man' was not seen as a very marketable name for a video game character in 1987.

Kawauchi would go on to create two followup shows: Diamond Eye: Warrior Of Light and Symbol of Justice Condorman, but neither one would have the success of Rainbowman or the shows created by Shotaro Ishinomori (Kamen Rider, Kikaider, Gorenger, and others). Condorman did give us this amazing ending sequence though:

Complications

Personality - Hiroshi is a kind, selfless defender of the innocent, jumping to the defense of absolute strangers without a second thought. His selflessness has cost him greatly, resulting in the deaths of many friends, and the transformation of his body into that of an inhuman machine.

Power Loss (All) - Hiroshi's body requires a massive amount of energy to function, necessitating a total of 100,000 calories a day.

Power Loss (Gravity Reduction Equipment) - Skyrider's Gravity Reduction Equipment has a height ceiling of around 10,000 meters (about 6 miles up, the height of most commercial aircraft), at which point air pressure becomes too thin and the user can no longer easily control their maneuvering.

Weakness (Sky Kick) - After using his finishing techniques, Skyrider has a very brief period of vulnerability. While not long enough to qualify for Distracting, he does count as Vulnerable if he's attacked by a Readied Action after using said effect.

Background: Hiroshi Tsukuba, the Skyrider. A capable young hang-glider, with a small group of close friends, Hiroshi's life was relatively innocent, until he encountered the evil organization Neo-Shocker. Rescuing one of their escaping scientists, Professor Keitaro Shido, from the group's footsoldiers, Hiroshi's friends would pay the price for his interference with their lives. Hiroshi would find his way to the professor, only for both to be attacked, and Hiroshi to be fatally wounded by one of Neo-Shocker's Kaijin. Now captured, the professor begged Neo-Shocker to allow him to perform a cybernetic surgery on the young man. Successful in his efforts, Hiroshi would be transformed into the Skyrider, using his newfound powers to defeat the creature, escaping alongside Shido, and beginning a crusade against the villainous organization. With the assistance of Professor Shido (and later, the Professor's associate Genjiro Tani), Hiroshi fought against the schemes of General Monster and his legion of genocidal cyborgs. Eventually, however, Skyrider would begin to falter and fail against Neo-Shocker's Admiral Majin and his army, leading to his first meeting with his predecessors, the Seven Legendary Riders. Undergoing their lethal training, Skyrider would realize his true power and assume a new, more powerful upgrade, granting him the strength to overwhelm Neo-Shocker. Alongside the Seven Legendary Riders, Skyrider would regain, and lose his parents, and uncover the grand conspiracy of the Neo-Shocker's Great Leader, seemingly sacrificing himself alongside his predecessors to defeat him and foil his "Anti-Oxygen Bomb" plot, leaving Earth at a seeming peace for a time...

Notes: Skyrider maintains the track record of the elite-tier Showa Riders, specced for specific fields, albeit with a bit more of a rookie twist than his predecessors. Skyrider starts around PL 10; with a solid +13/7 Unarmed split, he was already a capable hero. However, after the universe's most hardcore training montage (and taking 7 Rider Kicks TO THE FACE), Skyrider evolved into the whole, bullshit-tier hero most Showa Riders are, gaining the same general speed and Strength, and access to his "99 Techniques" (a vaguely defined set of random powers), allowing him to pull some truly random Power Stunts. On top of THAT, he's got an absurd level of Senses, able to see invisible targets, track radio signals, and even SMELL GOOD. This is all ignoring his actual defining feature; being a Skyrider, Hiroshi can fly over Mach 1 and fights better while airborne, breaching into PL 12.5-13 territory w/Favored Environment. On the downside, however, Hiroshi's somewhat lacking in skills compared to, say, the super-scientists of 1, V3, and Riderman, or the all-purpose badasses of 2 & Stronger. He's not terrible, of course, having a bit of coverage in everything, but nothing truly elite besides his transformed physical stats and Perception. But it won't stop him from flying on by and kicking your ass.
