Raphael: Earth-T1

Post by Thorpocalypse »

We're still dealing with the fact that we're NINJAHOLICS here at J-Mart as we add our last member of the TMNT brothers!

Image
Name's Raph. If there's a brawl, count me in. Leo loves to plan, but me? I'd rather fight first and ask questions later. If any shellbrains try to mess with me and my brothers, they won't know what hit 'em! Oh yeah, they will... ME! you bad guys heard me! If you guys ever mess with me and my brothers, you'll get it! I know that Leo and I have been fighting a lot but... we're brothers and brothers do fight. But we protect each other and that's what counts most in my life. - Raphael

Relationships: His brothers, Casey Jones, April O'Neil and Master Splinter.
Secret: The Turtles try to remain out of the public eye and operate in secret and stealth.
Temper: Raph has a VERY quick temper which can cause him, and his brothers, lots of issues.

Abilities 56 + Skills 27 (54 ranks) + Advantages 22 + Powers 7 + Defenses 14 = 126 / 126

Build Comments: The team badass, Raphael. As Leo and Superman discuss in the hysterical parody, the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made (check it out at dailymotion.com, a great waste of 45 minutes), every team needs "that guy", like Wolverine, or Batman (depending on the writer of JLA) at the time. You know, the loner, the guy that never follows the rules but all the fans love, but the team leaders hate. That's Raph.

Secret Origins: Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Saki were members of The Foot ninja clan om feudal Japan. Saki, a high-ranking member, ordered that in addition to assassinating the lord they were hired to kill, they should wipe out anybody else they come across. Yoshi refused and Saki marked him for death. The Foot killed Yoshi's wife, Tang Shen, but Yoshi fled with his and Shen's four sons. Some years later, Saki and the Foot found Yoshi and his children, and slew them all.

The Story so Far: Their story did not end there. Saki, through mystic means, lived for hundreds of years more, ruling The Foot Clan with an iron fist. Eventually, though, he ended up being ousted by new high ranking members of the clan and put to death. His granddaughter, Karai, had him resurrected and with several loyal followers, including his lieutenant Tatsu, they came to America. After recruiting and training several more new members, Saki forged a suit of armor and changed his name to The Shredder and set about taking over the New York underworld.

But an old foe awaited him. Yoshi and his sons were reincarnated as a rat and four turtles in a research laboratory called Stockgen owned by Baxter Stockman, a scientist who had secretly allied himself with General Krang. April O’Neill, who worked at the lab, named the rat Splinter and the turtles after legendary artists, Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael. Members of the Foot Clan broke into the facility one night to steal some mutagen. The animals are taken by mistake and after dropped into a sewer with the mutagen. They, and an alley cat that tried to make off with Raphael, are covered with it and transformed into enlightened, humanoid beings.

Yoshi, now called Splinter, remembers his past life and begins to train the turtles in the art of ninjutsu in preparation for their destiny: battle with Oroku Saki. And drawn by cosmic forces none can truly comprehend, their battle was rejoined and has continued for years.

Characterization: Raphael ("Raph") is consistently portrayed as the the most aggressive of the turtles. Despite his hot-tempered personality, he is simultaneously kind-hearted and has a soft spot for those in need. Raph is the most impatient, aggressive and rash turtle among his brothers, enjoying and delving head-first into combat, confident in his skills. He is looked up to for strength, comradery, and reliability.

Being the rebellious member of the team, Raph frequently goes off on his own to do things his own way, often getting himself into sticky situations. It was this common rebellious streak than caused Raph and vigilante Casey Jones to hit off their friendship, fighting crime behind the backs of authority - authority above and below the manhole.

While Raph is the most likely to charge first, ignore reason, use force and question higher-ups, he is a considerate, honest, loyal, empathetic fighter who uses his great abilities for good.

Friends and Foes: He often butts heads with his older brother, Leonardo, and picks on his younger brothers, Michelangelo and Donatello, being jealous of Leonardo's role as the leader, easily annoyed by Michelangelo's immaturity, and finding Donatello's intelligence "nerdy". Nonetheless, he cares deeply about his three brothers, and is particularly protective about them.

Since moving to Bludhaven, he and Nightwing get along fine, but his reckless behavior sometimes rubs Grayson the wrong way. He has developed a strong rivalry with Alopex, her controlled, precise manner being a contrast to his more emotional and reckless approach.

Destiny's Pawn: Splinter is attuned to the flow of the universe and is driven by a destiny that sometimes even he doesn't understand.

Relationships: With his sons, the TMNT. He also has become close to April O'Neil and Casey Jones.

Abilities 78 + Skills 31 (62 ranks) + Advantages 46 + Powers 2 + Defenses 18 = 175 / 175

Build Comments: The Turtle’s sensei and father, Splinter. I admit I probably went overboard with his advantages but I wanted him to be able to beat Shredder with some luck and definitely be able to school his sons whenever he wanted to without making him PL11. And I think with this build he can do it. He is really hard to hit and a ghost when he needs to me.

Secret Origins: Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Saki were members of The Foot ninja clan in feudal Japan.

Yoshi, now called Splinter, remembers his past life and begins to train the turtles in the art of ninjutsu in preparation for their destiny: battle with Oroku Saki. And drawn by cosmic forces none can truly comprehend, their battle was rejoined and has continued for years.

Characterization: Splinter is many things to the turtles – Wise sensei, protective parent, loving father, stern disciplinarian, quirky master and Zen philosopher. A ninja master at the height of his abilities, he’s determined to train and protect his new family at all costs. His years of ninja training means he’s not only a fearsome fighter, but also remarkably in tune with the universe.

Splinter can be very strict when it comes to training and letting his sons up to the surface. Sometimes he uses harsh methods in order for them to learn a lesson, but nonetheless, Splinter is a loving father who only wants what's best for his sons, and will do anything he can to protect them from harm’s way.

Friends and Foes: He dearly loves his turtle sons and has become a father figure to Casey and April as well. His mortal enemy is the Shredder and he is driven bring his former ally to justice.

COMPLICATIONS:
Enemy: Splinter, the TMNT.

Obsession: Destroying Splinter the Turtles.

Abilities 78 + Skills 38 (76 ranks) + Advantages 36 + Powers 11 + Defenses 16 = 179 / 179

Build Comments: Ah, The Shredder, one of comicdom's most recognizable villains. I feel more reworking for him coming up since I felt like I overdid some stuff, but I am still trying to find that line between the my old builds and how I’d like to do things in the new Thorpocaverse. He feels a bit too strong to me skill wise and advantage-wise, but then again, he is the @$%@* Shredder and he needs to be able to hang with four turtles at once, at least for a while.

Secret Origins: Oroku Saki was a high-ranking member of the Foot Clan in feudal Japan. He orders that in addition to assassinating the lord they were hired to kill, they should wipe out anybody else they come across. Hamato Yoshi, another Foot Clan member, refused, and Saki marks him for death. The Foot killed Yoshi's wife, Tang Shen, but Yoshi fled with his and Shen's four sons. Some years later, Saki and the Foot found Yoshi and his children, and slew them all.

The Story so Far: Saki, through mystic means, lived for hundreds of years more, ruling The Foot Clan with an iron fist.

Members of the Foot Clan broke into the facility to steal some mutagen. The animals are taken by mistake and after dropped into a sewer with the mutagen they are covered with it and transformed into enlightened, humanoid beings.

Yoshi, now called Splinter remembers his past life and begins to train the turtles in the art of ninjutsu in preparation for their destiny: battle with Oroku Saki. And drawn by cosmic forces none can truly comprehend, their battle was rejoined and has continued for years.

After losing much of his power in New York due to a gang war with The Kingpin, he relocated to Bludhaven after learning of the power vacuum there with the demise of Blockbuster. The Turtles and Splinter have followed him there to continue their battle.

Characterization: Ambitious, charismatic and single-minded, The Shredder is a force to be reckoned with.

Friends and Foes: He is solely focused on his goals of killing Splinter and the Turtles and ruling Bludhaven (originally New York) so he doesn’t have many close associates. He does have some relationship with Karai and Tatsu, but he makes it clear they are his subordinates, not his peers.

And of course, where would he be without his loyal minions?

That one is a classic. I like that Shredder got the W, at least in that battle.

COMPLICATIONS:
Conflicted: Despite their adversarial status, she and Leonardo seem to have an emotional bond.
Motivation: Proving herself to be The Shredder's rightful heir.
Responsibility: To Shredder and The Foot Clan.

Abilities 66 + Skills 20 (40 ranks) + Advantages 31 + Powers 0 + Defenses 14 = 131 / 131

Build Comments: Karai has been in the TMNT-verse for pretty much all of its incarnations either as leader or second in command of The Foot. I really like her in the CGI TMNT movie so her build is geared towards that.

Secret Origins: Karai was brought up in the ways of the Foot Ninja Clan since she was old enough to hold a sword. Being the granddaughter of Okoru Saki came with great expectations and she was determined to live up to them. She rose quickly through the ranks, impressing everyone with her skill. Everyone that is, except Saki, who expected nothing but greatness from her.

Eventually, Saki’s hold on the Foot in Japan slipped and he was killed. Grief-stricken, she took his body to a shinobi priest who raised him from the dead. They and some of his loyal Foot soldiers made their way to America where Saki remade himself as The Shredder and vowed to rebuild his empire. He made Karai his second-in-command.

The Story so Far: Karai’s intelligence and skill made her a more than capable number two for The Shredder, helping lead The Foot to a position of power in the New York underworld. Eventually they came into conflict with Splinter and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and they had several clashes, each scoring victories against the other, but neither faction could score a decisive win over the other.

The Shredder came into conflict with The Kingpin, who had taken over leadership of The Hand and with his resources and inadvertent assistance from Mister Negative and his Inner Demons (with whom Kingpin had been involved in a gang war along The Hood) and The Kingpin was able to decisively defeat The Foot, forcing The Shredder and Karai to relocate to Chicago to rebuild again.

Characterization: She is generally a stoic, dependable lieutenant for The Shredder. Every now and then, though, her emotions get the best of her and when they do, look out.

Friends and Foes: She is fiercely loyal to The Shredder, despite his slights and how hard he is on her and she and Tatsu are close, their uncle-niece relationship forged under the fire of The Shredder’s demands. During the time when she was forced to work with the TMNT, she and Leonardo became close as both felt their roles for their families was similar and both admired the other’s commitment to their craft.

Relationships: Her current husband, Ronan the Accuser, her daughter, Luna, her sister Medusa and the rest of the Inhuman Royal Family
Responsibility: To the Inhuman Royal Family
Weakness: The Inhumans are all vulnerable to pollutants and toxins if not given a weekly dose of serum

Abilities 56 + Skills 19 (38 ranks) + Advantages 1 + Powers 58 + Defenses 16 = 150 / 150

Build Comments: For someone that's been around as long as she has, Crystal hasn't really been that big of a player in the Marvel U. She usually just ends up as the damsel in distress for her former boyfriend Johnny Storm, her ex-husband Quicksilver or the other Inhumans. But I think that she was the biggest winner in the mediocre War of Kings crossover. She’s occasionally gotten some decent run before as a sub in the FF, being an Avenger for a bit and of course being a leading member of the Inhuman Royal Family.

But I thought her turn as “the People’s Princess” as Black Bolt took over the Kree Empire was cool. The way she became the Princess Diana of the family to the Kree was a great move. And her romance with Ronan was handled wonderfully. It was great characterization for both of them, from being in an arranged marriage to truly loving each other. It's shown depth to both characters that had been lacking.

And they tried to push her during the overall Inhumans push a few years back as well but that didn't take either. So she's still floating around the Marvel U as a C-leaguer despite her cool powerset.

Secret Origins: Crystal was the second child born to the Inhuman nutritionists Quelin and Ambur. Her father Quelin was the brother of Rynda, wife of Agon, king of the Inhumans, and as such she was considered part of the Royal Family of Attilan. Like her older sister Medusa, Crystal was subjected to the Terrigen Mist when she was an infant, and the process endowed her with certain mental powers.

The Story so Far: While she was still a child, war erupted, forcing Crystal and her kinsmen to flee Attilan. Crystal passed through adolescence into young adulthood while wandering with her kinsmen through Asia, Europe, and finally America in search of Crystal's amnesiac sister Medusa. When they finally caught up with Medusa in New York, Medusa had sought refuge with the Fantastic Four, mistaking her kinsmen for her enemies. Crystal then met Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four and the two began a romantic relationship that survived Crystal's return to Attilan and a lengthy separation.

Crystal eventually returned to New York and served as a substitute member of the Fantastic Four during the Invisible Girl's first pregnancy and post-childbirth. During this time Crystal performed quite admirably as Susan Storm's replacement and effectively defeated the Wizard all by herself. Crystal was forced to return to Attilan when her health became impaired by prolonged exposure to pollutants in the atmosphere. However, en route to Attilan, Crystal became a pawn in a plan by the alchemist Diablo, and then happened upon the mutant Quicksilver, who had been wounded in battle with the Sentinels.

She brought Quicksilver back to Attilan, nursed him back to health, and became romantically involved with him. The Human Torch soon learned of Crystal's change in affections, and after a futile battle with Quicksilver, terminated his relationship with her. Crystal and Quicksilver were wed shortly thereafter, theirs being the first marriage between an Inhuman and a human (albeit a human mutant) in recorded history.

Crystal and Quicksilver conceived a child, a girl bearing no apparent Inhuman or mutant characteristics, whom they named Luna after the world on which she was born. While Quicksilver wanted to exercise the father's right to have his child subjected to the Terrigen Mist, Crystal convinced him to let her grow up normal.

Eventually, Crystal and Quicksilver's marriage began to deteriorate, due to Quicksilver's temper, which may have been aggravated by the evil Inhuman, Maximus the Mad. Crystal left Quicksilver and Attilan with Luna and her nanny, Maya, and returned to the Fantastic Four. Although she searched for the relationship she once had with Johnny, he was then married with Alicia Masters (later revealed to be a Skrull agent named Lyja). Dissatisfied, Crystal briefly had an affair with another man. Crystal returned to Attilan to deal with a crisis posed by Medusa and Black Bolt's child. Amidst the troubles, she and Quicksilver reconciled.

Later, the Inhumans were attacked by the alien Brethren, and Crystal sought out the Avengers for their help. Shortly thereafter she joined them, moving into the Avengers Mansion with Luna and nanny, Marilla. During her tenure with the Avengers, she developed a crush on teammate Dane Whitman (the Black Knight,) although she soon reconciled with Quicksilver yet again. Crystal was among the Avengers who seemingly sacrificed themselves to end the menace called Onslaught. Actually transported to a different reality created by Franklin Richards, Crystal was restored when the heroes returned.

When the heroes, who were believed dead, returned to Earth, Crystal and Quicksilver were reunited. Both helped the Avenges reassemble and accepted the status of reserve members. Crystal returned to Attilan, where she remained aside the Royal Family, raising Luna. Quicksilver would return to assist the Avengers on occasional missions.

After the events of House of M, Crystal was reunited with her depowered husband, only for him to steal the Terrigen Mist from Attilan, in an attempt to use it to restore the depowered mutants. Luna is exposed also, granting her various abilities. During the events of Silent War, the Inhumans located Quicksilver. He allowed Black Bolt to beat him, in response to his betrayal. Their marriage has now been annulled.

The Inhuman royal family traveled into Kree space, seeking an alliance against the invading Skrulls. Ronan the Accuser welcomed this alliance, but only on the condition that Crystal would become his bride. Medusa agreed, much to Crystal's chagrin.

Crystal's marriage to Ronan proceeded, even following Black Bolt's decision to usurp the throne of the Kree. She came to accept the idea of the marriage, defending it to her sister-in-law Polaris as a matter of statecraft (though there are indications that Ronan wished for more). The wedding proceedings were interrupted by the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, who attacked as part of Emperor Vulcan's invasion of the Kree Imperium. Ronan was beaten nearly to death in this attack. While visiting Ronan in recuperation, Crystal inadvertently helped rally the Kree people when she showed compassion towards injured Kree commoners. Acts which (thanks to Polaris) were eventually broadcasted over the Kree networks. This led to her being referred to as the "people princess" among some of the Kree people.

Characterization: Crystal has a compassionate heart, but often displays a fiery temper and strength of will.

Friends and Foes: She is close to the Inhuman Royal Family, her sister Medusa in particular. She remains on good terms with former lovers The Human Torch and Quicksilver. Her time as a member of the FF and Avengers has allowed her to make many contacts across the superhero community as well.

Currently she is married to Ronan the Accuser and while initially it was mainly a political move, over time she has grown to admire Ronan’s commitment to his people and her and she has grown close to him.
