Range: Canada.
Stereotypes: Satanic Demon monsters, angry, loud, obnoxious.

Encounter Groups: Flocks of 2-200

Tactics: Charge with wings and beak fluttering madly. Flee rapidly.

-The largest type of Goose is one that's become infamous in recent years due to memes about how terrifying they are. The amusing thing is these are only 8-15 lbs. or so and aren't a threat to a human (even small Coyotes can easily kill them), but they're a pure "Intimidation"-type build, devoted to frightening off opposition. They're very common in Calgary, where they snarl at random people, and harass other animals at the Calgary Zoo (a female Gorilla could only chase one off by coming at it with a stick). They are highly-successful as a species, being easily able to adapt to human environments (especially safe water features enclosed in communities). In fact, the animals are typically migratory, but there exist hundreds of thousands of "native" geese which have attached themselves to regular bodies of water. A lack of natural predators (even Coyotes are unwelcome in cities) and enough size to defend themselves against cats and small dogs, keep them safe, allowing populations to increase. Like many Geese, they are monogamous, and will breed for life- if one dies, the partner will find a new mate.

-A Canada Goose upgrades most of the stats of Ducks & Geese, turning them into highly-intimidating, aggressive fighters, though they're still only PL 1. I mean, there are clips of normal-sized men just grabbing them by the neck and hauling them off. The largest Canada Goose ever was only 24 lbs.- not enough to do a ton of damage or resist it. They're just pretty big and quite aggressive, which tends to deal with many foes. Predators include Coyotes, Wolves, and large birds of prey (Snowy Owls & Eagles are the only ones to regularly prey on adults).

Total: Abilities: -14 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 29 / Defenses: 6 (42)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Northern hemisphere.
Stereotypes: Beautiful, graceful, serene, calm.
Colouring: Usually white (one is black).
Size: 1-6 feet long (8-40 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Flocks of 2-200
Diet: Grasses & plants.
Tactics: Charge with wings and beak fluttering madly. Flee rapidly.

-Swans are famously graceful, beautiful birds, with such long, flowing movements that they've given their name to the most famous ballet in the world, Swan Lake, as well as being part of Hans Christian Andersen's Ugly Duckling, in which a young "cygnet" is mistaken for a duckling, and made fun of for its ugly grey down, until it matures into the Swan- the most beautiful of all birds. Swans are the largest members of the Duck/Goose/Swan order, hitting 33 lbs. and up routinely. Very large (among the largest of flying birds), they often require large bodies of water or tracts of land to get going. Swans, like some Geese, will mate for life, and are in fact the animals most famous for this. As they start breeding from 4-7 and live for up to 25 years, this is a very long investment and quite rare among animals.

-While Geese are stereotyped as lethal, angry attackers, it is the SWAN that's the true ass-kicker of the family- an adult swan can and will fight off any attacker its own body weight or less, and have almost never been seen jobbing to even Bald or Golden Eagles. At 34 lbs. and mean as hell, they are far too big for most regular predators to take on, and too fast to be caught by anything bigger.

Swans:
* There are seven species of swans, but only four are this size.

Image

TRUMPETER SWAN: The largest bird native to North America. White with black beaks. 15-40 lbs.
WHOOPER SWAN: Native to Eurasia. The national bird of Finland. White with yellow & black beaks. 16-26 lbs.

Image
Image

BLACK SWAN: The only black-colored swan, native to Australia. The term "black swan" is from Ancient Rome, where it was used to refer to something that "could theoretically exist, but does not", since they thought black swans did not exist. 8-21 lbs.

Image

MUTE SWAN: White with orange beaks that have black "knobs" on top. From central North America & Europe. Rarely made noise, but were thought to call out a beautiful song when dying- this is the origin of the phrase "Swan Song". 18-32 lbs.

Dodge +4 (DC 14), Parry +4 (DC 14), Toughness -4, Fortitude +0, Will +0

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Birds cannot speak to humans, nor use their wings & beaks to easily manipulate objects.
Disabled (Poor Walkers)- Loons have legs set very far back on their bodies, and so are very poor walkers, being ungainly on land. Only the Red-Throated Loon may take off on land- others require a distinctive start-up from the water.

Total: Abilities: -26 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 29 / Defenses: 4 (21)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Far Northern Hemisphere.
Stereotypes: Mysterious and wild.
Colouring: Mostly black & white.
Size: 1-2.5 feet long (3-14 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Small fish, amphibians, crustaceans and other small sealife.
Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-Loons make up the order "Gaviiformes", and are somewhat similar to Ducks & Geese, being stout waterbirds, though they have prominent crests and small beaks (looking somewhat similar to Coromorants, which are close relatives). They are relatively uncommon compared to ducks, but have an iconic cry that's come to represent the lonely wilderness, off the beaten path- a distinctive "Ooohh-OOOOWWOOOOOOOOOOO-OOOOH!". They were eventually chosen to appear on Canada's iconic $1 coin, which was promptly renamed "The Loonie" (which is why the $2 coin, which debuted years later, became "The Toonie").

-Loons are similar in size to large ducks, and have toes connected by webbing. Both sexes are usually black and white, and eat small pebbles to aid in digestion, much like chickens do. In England, they are called "Divers" for their tendency to swim on the surface, then suddenly dive down to find prey. Their North American name actually comes from their clumsiness on land- their legs are set so far back that they can barely walk properly, and so the name comes from either Old English or Scandinavian languages, either origin meaning "clumsy". There are only five species of Loon- the Yellow-Billed, Black-Throated, Red-Throated, Pacific & Common Loon. The Common Loon is the one placed on the "Loonie".

-Loons are similar to ducks, but have pointed beaks used for stabbing, making them slightly more dangerous to predators and prey than ducks. They are also very northerly animals, wintering in the middle part of the Northern hemisphere, and summering around the Arctic Circle.

Encounter Groups: Hordes of 2-200
Diet: Small sealife, fish.
Tactics: Flee rapidly underwater, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-Far lesser known that Ducks or Loons, Grebes are likely more closely related to Flamingos, but are in their own order. Like Loons, they have legs placed very far back on their body, leaving them ungainly on land- many will simply fall over. Their beaks differ by species- some are pointed and others broad, and the diet varies just as much. Unlike other waterbirds, they can adjust their buoyancy by altering their feathers (many of which grow straight out)- at times, they can swim with just their heads and necks out of the water. There are about twenty species in the order, from the Least Grebe (4 ounces) to the Greater Grebe (4 lbs.). Some are very common, while the Junin Grebe (found only on a single lake in Peru) and Hooded Grebe are Critically-Endangered.

-Grebes are the tiniest waterbirds, and poor, reluctant fliers (in fact, two species from South America are entirely flightless!).

Encounter Groups: Hordes of 2-200.
Diet: Small fish, squid.
Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-The hilariously-named Boobies are likely given their title from the Spanish word for "stupid" ("bobo"), as these docile, tame birds were prone to flying right onto sailing ships, where they were easily captured and eaten. Most are either common to South America, or the Southern seas across the globe. Most distinctive is the Blue-Footed Booby, with incredibly bright legs. Males with brighter legs are chosen more often as mates, and have faster-growing, healthier young. Other Boobies include the Brown, Masked, Nazca, Abbott's, Red-Footed & Peruvian Booby.

-Despite their comedic names, Boobies are excellent hunters, able to hit the water at 90 mph in a dive, reaching as far as 80 feet below the surface in their search for fish and squid. They have slender, missile-shaped bodies to enable this, and are more resistant to pressure than most birds. They are extremely small, but good at catching fish, owing to slightly serrated bills to enable a strong grip.

Magnificent Frigatebird.

FRIGATEBIRDS: With 7.5-foot wingspans, these have the largest wing-to-body ratio of any birds. They will eat fish chased to the surface by tuna, and also steal food from other birds- kleptoparasitism- as well as eating other birds' chicks. Five species.

DARTERS: Four species of tropical divers.
SMALL CORMORANTS: Many Cormorants, such as the Pygmy Cormorant, are less than a pound in weight. They'd fit something like this more.

-The most famous of the diving birds, Cormorants are the most capable by far- diving from high positions to reach up to 150 feet beneath the ocean depths! There are 40 species of Cormorant, all between 4-11 lbs. They are so good at fishing that "Cormorant Fishing" is still practiced today in China & Japan, and in fact goes back to ancient times in many other cultures. The cormorants are trained to gather fish by fishermen, with a snare around their throat to prevent them from swallowing large fish- the birds thus fly to the fisherman to have it taken out.

-There are 40 known species of Cormorants (some are called "Shags"), with most being dark in color. Some have a lot of bright dots around their eyes. Their wins are very small to allow for greater swimming speed- this gives them the least energy-efficient flight of any flying bird.

-For Cormorants, I just upgraded the Gannet build slightly. Thus, they are PL 1 predators.

This is another sign of how strange evolution worked on these isolated islands. They are still excellent swimmers, however, diving from rocks to find fish and small octopi. They are vulnerable, but their population seems okay- even the threat of introduced predators was not the killer it was to other flightless birds, like the Dodo or Reunion Ibis. The birds are so docile they can easily be approached and picked up by humans.

Total: Abilities: -16 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 18 / Defenses: 6 (21)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Anywhere there are people.
Stereotypes: Gluttonous, comedic.
Colouring: White or brown.
Size: 2-5 feet long (6-26 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Pods of 2-100.
Diet: Small reptiles, mammals, fish.
Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak. Hunt via grasping large volumes of water at once, then filtering out the water.

-Pelicans are an extremely famous bird for their gigantic throat pouches, used to grab large amounts of fish at once, then filter out the water before swallowing the prey whole. They've also been caught on camera swallowing some truly disgusting amounts of live prey at once, such as the chicks of other birds.

-Pelican species include the & Spot-Billed Pelican (11 lbs). American Whites are one of the longest birds of the Americas, and develop "knobs" atop their bills during the breeding season. Brown Pelicans are the smallest, and live along the coasts of the Americas.

-Though they're silly-looking beasts, Pelicans are actually extremely large and will not be attacked by most predators. Anything big enough to kill them is usually too slow to attack a flying bird, and things like cats or weasels would think better of tackling a 25-lb. waterbird. They may be preyed upon by sharks and alligators, however. But overall, they match the heaviest Storks- PL 2 creatures.

Pelican Types:

Image

DALMATIAN PELICAN: On average, the Dalmatian Pelican (which lives across Asia) is the heaviest flying bird, though some individuals of other species will be larger. 22-26 lbs.
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN: The longest flying bird of the Americas. 10-20 lbs.
GREAT WHITE PELICAN: From Africa & Asia, the second-largest Pelican. 22-24 lbs.

Image

AUSTRALIAN PELICAN: Though only medium-sized by Pelican standards, these have the largest bills in the entire animal world, and frequently use these large pink bills to eat other birds. 9-18 lbs.
PERUVIAN PELICAN: 15 lbs.
PINK-BACKED PELICAN: From Africa to the Middle East & India. 8-15 lbs.
SPOT-BACKED PELICAN: Southeast Asian Pelicans. 8-13 lbs.
BROWN PELICAN: The smallest species, living along the coasts of the Americas. 5-10 lbs, but even then, most predators won't tackle one.

Shorebirds

Post by Jabroniville »

SHOREBIRDS (Charadriiformes):
-This extremely disparate group is made up of three families with almost nothing in common aside from being shorebirds:

Gulls: Long-winged distance fliers.
Waders: Tiny shorebirds that walk along shorelines.
Auks: Penguin-like birds with large beaks.

-Extremely tiny, the Waders are shorebirds that have large, splayed-out feed to enable them to walk along coastlines. There are about 210 species of Wader- a truly astronomical number for something that isn't really well-known or famous. There's too many to really go into considering they're largely similar, but they include the Painted-Snipes, Sandpipers, Plovers, Lapwings, Oystercatchers & Curlews.

-Another "Generic Bird", kinda, the Waders are semi-aquatic but otherwise not very stand-outish or dangerous to anything but fish.
