You mentioned with the Guineafowl, lol.

But yeah, that's interesting- I kinda wondered where the name came from, and couldn't recall why Turkey had that name (I thought it might have been involved with Ataturk, the legendary figure who united the country in the 1900s).u

-Sandgrouses are part of an Order to themselves, and are very capable fliers, unlike other Grouse-type birds. Some have specialized belly-feathers that allow them to retain water to bring back to their chicks, which may be several miles from water holes. They typically live very far away from people, spread across Africa, Central Asia and even parts of Spain. There are about 16 kinds of Sandgrouse, all pretty much alike- they were once thought to be related to the Galliformes, but have since been placed in their own group- convergent evolution is blamed for making them so similar.

-Cuckoos are the sole family in the order Cuculiformes, and are famous for their ability to trick other birds into raising their own chicks. This is a remarkably low-effort approach to parenting, and has proven effective- the Cuckoo places its egg among a foreign nest, and eventually its egg hatches (often first), being favored by the parents, who are so compelled to take care of everything in the nest that even this obviously-different young is carefully fed and often favored, due to its often greater size. Note that only SOME Cuckoos engage in this "brood parasitism" (the vast majority raise their own young, but notably, the European Common Cuckoo engages in this, and Europeans naturally wrote most of the stories), but it's so famous it's given root to the word "cuckold", which was first a man tricked into raising children that weren't his own (because his wife cheated), and now generally means any man who was cheated on. It says a lot about us that one of the most shameful and unfortunate things to be is in fact, a "cuckold".

-Brood Parasitism is a rather fascinating process- the chick hatches first and often edges out the other young or eggs- never having learned this ability, it might be instinctual.

-Most Cuckoos live in trees, while others live on the ground. They feed on insects, larvae and other animals, as well as fruit. Many have extremely wild color schemes, but the brood parasites are often quite plain and non-descript, which helps their mission. They live nearly anywhere save the coldest and the driest locations. Most are sedentary, while some migrate across huge distances (as in, thousands of kilometers). In India, they are sacred to Kamadeva, God of Desire & Longing, while the Japanese view them as symbolizing unrequited love.

-Roadrunners are by far best-known for the famous Looney Tunes character, a gigantic Ostrich-like speedster who never speeks, but has an iconic "Meepmeep!" call, and constantly befuddles the hapless Wile E. Coyote. Roadrunners are actually a type of fast-moving ground Cuckoo- there is a Greater & Lesser, differentiated mostly by size. They are quick-moving hunters who generally attack small animals- their speed is such that they are one of the few animals that hunts RATTLESNAKES.

Encounter Groups: Solitary or small groups.
Diet: Mostly insects- larger ones take frogs & mice.
Tactics: Snatch with hooked beak, either swallowing whole or bashing against objects first.

-The distinctively-named Frogmouths earn the title from their huge frog-like gapes, which they use to capture insects. They are poor fliers who rest during the day, and hunt bugs by night. A few species are large enough to take frogs & mice, which they sometimes beat against stones before swallowing whole. They are extremely visually-similar to owls, and may be closely related.

-For stats, they just have the generic "Tiny Bird" build. Most animals THIS TINY aren't going to differ very much, even when some are hunters and others are foragers.

-Nightjars are extremely common and live across the world- about 20+ species. They are sometimes called "Goatsuckers" for the ancient folk tale about them suckling milk from goats. They are nocturnal birds that mostly eat insects. Some flocks, like those of the Common Nighthawk, can number in the thousands. The greatest name by far is the SATANIC NIGHTJAR, apparently named because it's call was thought to sound like it was pulling someone's eye out.

Total: Abilities: -34 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 33 / Defenses: 5 (23)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Worldwide (except for islands- even Australia).
Stereotypes: Noisy, chattery.
Colouring: Almost any.
Size: 6-25 inches long (7g-1.5 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary. Some form small groups.
Diet: Mostly insects. Some tree sap.
Tactics: Flee using flight. Occasionally attack with sharpened bill.

-Woodpeckers are famous for their noisy hammering as they drill holes into trees with a crazy rapid-fire head-slamming action, then scooping out the insects and grubs inside. Their bodies are ludicrously adapted for this- any other creature would die of brain damage from this sort of thing, but Woodpeckers not only have specialized beaks (an outer and inner layer, plus "filling" that connects them), but specialized SKULLS, as their tongue-bone actually encircles the brainpan, thus protecting it from damage. The short bursts they use to peck at structures are due to the cool-down process needed- the pecking actually heats up their brains!

-Woodpeckers can be destructive to homes by trying the same hammering there, but are kind of symbolic of forests. One of the early famous cartoon characters, Woody Woodpecker, is the most well-known character based off these guys. Not all Woodpeckers live in forests, though- some inhabit very dry habitats, and eat things inside of CACTUSES instead. Woodpeckers may also eat carrion, or take rodents and small lizards.

-For stats, Woodpeckers are effectively like any other tiny bird, but with a two-point Weaken Effect that allows them to drill small holes- a standard Weaken Toughness effect would probably result in too much destruction, so it has some Limits on it. This can and will damage even buildings, but only over small portions. The time required to bore holes makes this an improbably venue of attack- though it's cartoony fun to have one of these guys rat-a-tatting on someone's head.

Types of Woodpeckers:
* There are around 240 species of Woodpeckers in general, so trying to make a list is beyond me.

TRUE WOODPECKERS: The classic, often varying a fair bit in size between regions. The largest is the 1.4-lb. Great Slaty Woodpecker.
PICULETS: The tiniest Woodpeckers- being small and round, with large heads. Often eat from branches instead of large trees, which they'd have problems gripping.
WRYNECKS: Only two species. Can turn their heads almost 180 degrees, which they use as a threat display, along with snake-like hissing. Usually eat ants- their bills are shorter and less dagger-like than other Woodpeckers.

Image

SAPSUCKERS: Also somewhat iconic, mostly for the name- I've often heard their names used to identify someone as an ornithologist, saying something like "I see a yellow-bellied sapsucker over there"- it's a long name but still identifiable as a normal North American bird. Sapsuckers, naturally, consume mostly tree sap, given the same way as most Woodpeckers get things. Their tongues have tiny hairs to best attach to the sap, and they will also eat some insects.

Parrots

Post by Jabroniville »

PARROTS:
-Parrots are famous the world over as birds that can mimic human speech (though Ravens can also do this, just not as well)- they are multi-colored and have powerful, short beaks ideal for cracking nuts. Parrots are famously long-lived- the largest ones can live for 80 years, and even the tiny ones can hit 20-30 years of age. This makes them extremely long-lived by the standards of housepets, and a much bigger responsibility for time than others. "Parrot Rescue" organizations exist because some people don't even LIVE long enough to care for their bird for its entire lifespan, and some adopt multiple parrots from unprepared households, including my brother's Satanic hellbeast cockbite of a parrot, Tiki the Meyer's Parrot of Sucking.

Total: Abilities: -32 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 31 / Defenses: 4 (18)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Australia (but worldwide as pets).
Stereotypes: Friendly, charming, musical.
Colouring: Any Possible Colour (green & yellow in wild).
Size: Up to 7 inches long (30-40 grams).
Encounter Groups: Small groups to hordes of thousands
Diet: Seeds, grass, wheat.
Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-"Parakeet" is a name for small parrots (both are derived from the French word "Perroquet"). In the West it usually refers to the Budgerigar ("Budgie"). There are 115 species, all between 8 & 12 inches long, thereabouts. A huge chunk are either from the South American tropics, or the Southeast Asian ones and Australia.

Types of Parakeets:
BUDGIES: Budgies are the smallest Parrots, being the cheapest ones you can buy in pet stores, where they are often kept in gigantic cages holding dozens and dozens of the tiny birds. In the wild, they are green & yellow with black scalloped markings, but in captivity they've been bred to be blue, white, yellow, green, grey and even with crests. It's unclear where their name comes from- the full name is "Budgerigar" but this got shortened because that name is dumb. They are actually the third most popular pet in the world, after the dog & cat! Okay, I did not expect that- I would have sworn it'd be the hamster. They are skilled mimics- among the top five: Puck, a male budgie, holds the world record for the largest vocabulary of any bird, at 1,728 words.

ROSE-RINGED PARAKEET: A thriving population of this African species lives in the U.K., possibly having been released there years ago by Humphrey Bogart & Katherine Hepburn while doing a tour of The African Queen.
PYGMY PARROTS: Six Southeast Asian species- the smallest members of the order.

ATINGA: Six kinds of South American Parakeet, including the Sun Conure, popular in pet stores.
PSITTACARA: Thirteen species of American parrots- the only living parrot in the U.S. is the Green Conure of Texas (the Grey Parrot has been extirpated and now lives only in Mexico).
PYRRHURA: A family with a vast number of Parakeets from the same genera that includes the Macaws. Largely from South America.

CAROLINA CONURE: One of only three parrot species native to the United States, now extinct.

Image

PRINCESS PARROT: A popular pet for their coloration and personality.

Image

POLYTENI: Eight parrot species from around Australia & Polynesia. Very bright reds on most of them, especially the King Parrots.

Image

Crimson Rosellia & Hooded Parrot.

BROAD-TAILED PARROTS: 35-40 species of small Australian parrots.

Image
Image

LORIES & LORIKEETS: More Australian & Polynesian parrots.

Image

FIG PARROTS: Five small Australian ones.

Image

MINI-MACAWS: Part of the "Macaw" group, but are tiny parrots by comparison to those giants. Similar to other Macaws in being fairly docile and kind-natured.

Image

LOVEBIRDS: Actually hail mostly from Africa & Asia, unlike other parrots. Lovebirds are named for their forming long-term relationships with others- humans and parrots alike- but can be aggressive.
HANGING PARROTS: The same family as Lovebirds. These are the only parrots who sleep upside-down.
SMALL COCKATOOS: Popular pets, the Cockatiel is the smallest variety of Cockatoos. There are a variety of Cockatoos called Corellas that are also around 12 inches long, as well as the mostly pink Galahs.
CAIQUES: Small, stout but very bright, often in yellows & greens.
MEYER'S PARROT: The smallest of the African grey-headed parrots. Forged in Hell's hate furnace to torture mankind and literally bite hands that feed them. Yes, my brother had one of these, why do you ask?

-Many parrot species are around a foot long and half a pound- smaller than the Macaws, but larger than Parakeets. Many of these are very intelligent- the Grey Parrot is one of the world's most intelligent birds. I put them at around PL 0.5- they bite a lot harder than Parakeets do (their jaws can and will crack large nuts open), and are quite a bit tougher, but still small enough that a human or a housecat could easily kill one.

Medium-Sized Parrots:
GREY PARROT: One of the most common pet parrots owing to their social nature and tremendous speech capabilities. They are highly-intelligent but very sensitive, and require a lot of attention, as they are flock-based birds.
GREY-HEADED PARROTS: Named "Poicephalus" since they all have grey heads. These African birds include the Senegal, Red-Bellied & Cape Parrots, among many others.
ANDROGLOSSINI: Numerous species of medium-sized parrots, all very colorful. The Pileated Parrot, Rose-Faced Parrot (a lotta "xxxx-Faced Parrots", really), Blue-Headed Parrot, Short-Tailed Parrot, Bronze-Winged Parrot and more.
VULTURINE PARROT: Its bald head is thought to be a result of a diet of sticky fruits- much like vultures, it could be an adaptation to keep their heads clean.
AMAZON PARROTS: The largest population of the above group- all medium-sized and mostly green. The Imperial Amazon is the national bird of the Dominican Republic, appearing on its flag.
GOLDEN PARAKEET: Despite the name, is a pretty medium-sized golden-looking macaw-like bird.
RED-FAN PARROT: Neck-feathers "fan" out. This Amazonian bird is said to be shockingly aggressive and requires firm handling as a pet.
RED-BELLIED MACAW: Largest of the "Mini-Macaws".
PSITTACULINAE: Large group that includes the below parrots as well. Features King Parrots, Red-Cheeked Parrots, and more, as well as many classified as "Parakeets" because they're so tiny.

Image

ECTLECTUS PARROT: Identifiable by extreme sexual dimorphism, with cherry-red females and green males.
RACKET-TAILS: Sport two long, thin feathers ending in flat, rounded "spatulas". Several species from the Philippines & Indonesia.

-Cockatoos are a "superfamily" of 21 species of parrots, generally less robust and colorful than their relatives. They have curved beaks and are immediately recognizable by their very large feathered crests. The entire group lives around the Pacific Islands & Australia. A few (like the Palm Cockatoo) are larger (Macaw-sized), while the Cockatiel & Corellas are Parakeet-sized. This is kind of an intermediate one, being smaller than Medium-Sized Parrots and less dangerous (owing to smaller beak and body size), but larger than Parakeets.

-The largest of parrots are often 1-3 lbs. The most notable of them are the huge Macaws, South American parrots that are among the most intelligent birds in the world.

Large Parrots:
MACAWS: Notable Macaws in include the Hyacinthe, Blue-And-Yellow and Scarlet Macaws- the latter being easily the most recognizable parrot.

Image

PESQUET'S PARROT: A large, black-headed parrot also named the "Dracula Parrot" for its coloration and bald, narrow head.

Image

LARGE COCKATOOS: There are some exceptionally-large black Cockatoos from Australia. The Palm Cockatoo is up to 2 lbs., and some are close to that.

Responsibility (Easily-Found)- Thought they are well-camouflaged to birds of prey (their only natural predators), Kakapo freeze when approached and have a very distinctive, pungent scent that even humans can detect, making them easy prey for hunters and their dogs.

Total: Abilities: -24 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 23 / Defenses: 5 (16)

Era: Modern Day
Range: New Zealand.
Stereotypes: Showy.
Colouring: Almost any.
Size: 20-25 inches long (2-5 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary to small circuses (2-13).
Diet: Entirely herbivorous- fruits, seeds, etc.
Tactics: Bite with large beak.

-Closely related to the Kea, the Kakapo is a huge, flightless parrot native to New Zealand- flightlessness having evolved along with a robust body thanks to the insular island population... where their flightless nature made them easily victimized by the new predators man brought- dogs, cats, rats, ferrets and stoats found them easy pickings. The near-complete destruction of the species was so vast that we have an exact number of remaining adults- a mere 201 remain of what was once 49 total birds. The Kakapo have been captured and forcibly relocated to a pair of predator-free islands, in the hopes that they can bounce back a little. The resulting genetic bottleneck of so few remaining has left them with lowered disease resistance and infertility, making the process slow (it wasn't until the '90s that we started succeeding a little).

-Kakapo are thought to be one of the world's longest-lived birds, with a reported lifespan of up to 100 years. They and the Kea are part of a small group that separated from the main Parrot line millennia ago- before the parrots spread across the world. Their wings are only used for balance and to help them when leaping from trees- they are also one of the only birds that can build up large amounts of body fat, and eat entirely a herbivorous diet. Flight is actually a very energy-leeching activity, and so these grounded birds are able to survive on very poor or low-nutrition diets compared to most birds. Unlike most parrots, they are nocturnal- the Maori called them "Night Parrots", while their facial discs had Europeans calling them "Owl Parrots".

-Kakapo are Macaw-like in stats, being of similar size. They are good climbers but lack the defensive abilities of the flighted parrots.
