Galliformes (Gamebirds & Relatives)

Post by Jabroniville »

GALLIFORMES:
-The order comprising Chickens and their relatives (including pheasants, grouse, quails, turkeys & peacocks), the Galliformes make up about 290 species, living on every continent but Antarctica. Many are skilled runners that focus on that over flight. They have rounded bodies, blunt wings, and a ground-based lifestyle. Galliformes are actually one of the world's most ancient lineages- they survived the Extinction Event that took out the dinosaurs and all the tree-dwelling birds, forming one of two large groups of birds that survive to this day.

-The most-famous and important member of the Galliformes to humans is naturally the Chicken, domesticated from the East Asian "Red Jungle-Fowl" about 5,000 years ago. With robust bodies, egg-laying ability, plenty of meat, and a small footprint, they were of fantastic use to anyone who could have them, and remain the world's most-eaten animal to humans. Roosters are known for their large, bright waddles and combs, and many types of chickens have been bred for distinctive appearances.

-Fowl have very basic stats- most are not a threat whatsoever to humans, and can barely pose any resistance to predators. The worst most can do is gang up on a single small threat and fend them off that way. Unlike most birds, they cannot properly fly- only taking to the air briefly.

Fowl Types:
* Most of these are related to the Galliformes, but some are from other families and just share the stats.

JUNGLEFOWL: A variety of species of Junglefowl exist, mostly from Southeast Asia- the Red Junglefowl gave way to the modern "Chicken" used for food & cockfighting today. There are also Green, Grey & Sri Lankan Junglefowl.

WOOD QUAILS: Small, extremely shy birds from South America.
BUTTONQUAILS: Unrelated to Quails, but look so similar they have the same stats and share a name. They're spread across parts of Africa, Australia & Asia.
SNOWCOCKS: Heavy Tibetan birds that are truly flightless- they can only glide slightly after leaping from a high point.
MESITES: Mesites hail from Madagascar- all three species are threatened, like most Madagascaran animals. Not really related to Galliformes (they look different, with much longer beaks), but have the same stats.
FRANCOLINS: Scrawny gamebirds mostly from Africa, with five of the 40 species from Asia. Some are named "Spurfowl" for the bony spurs on their feet, similar to those of Junglefowl and other Galliformes.

Image

HOATZIN: An odd South American bird resembling a Pheasant, but is more closely-related to the Cranes. It ferments food in a large crop, which renders it nearly flightless and also makes it smell like literal manure. This gives it the nickname "Skunkbird".

Helmeted & Vulturine Guineafowl.

GUINEAFOWL: One of the most ancient Galliformes, hailing from Africa. Six species, mostly long-necked and kind of gawky-looking. Hairless heads and extremely bright coloring on some parts, with speckled feathers on other.

Back in the middle ages, guineafowl were exported out of Africa to Europe for consumption. They would be shipped through Constantinople, Turkey. A LOT of people associated the bird as coming from Turkey so much that they called guineafowl "Turkey Bird".

When Europeans made it to North America, they discovered the wild turkey, but mistook it to be guineafowl. So they called the bird they saw "turkey". When they discovered their mistake, the name stuck for the American bird.

-Yes, now I can finally talk about GAMECOCKS. The animals, not the legendary supervillain. So cockfighting debuted in East Asia (duh- that's where chickens come from), and was a popular pasttime in olden-days, and eventually made its way to Europe and the Americas. Now it's often treated as a barbaric, horrifying activity and a sign of low-class yokels engaging in hillbilly shit, but back in the day it was common among the ruling elites. After all, who back then could afford to have animals you could just lavish attention on and throw away once they lost a fight? But in general, men competiting via their cocks has always been a thing, cuz I dunno- it's gladatorial games but cheaper.

-Typically, this activity is done by men taking their finest cocks, possibly putting bladed spurs over their natural ones, and sending them against each other. Bred for aggression, they take advantage of the fact that junglefowl are innately aggressive towards other males anyways- and so the cocks clash. A cock of exceptional length or size definitely has some advantage, but it also turns out that it's how the cock is USED that's important- breeding is a big deal. Often, the loser dies or is injured- others will attempt to flee.

-A fowl used for Cockfighting is the same animal as the basic Fowl, but much more aggressive and combat-ready. Overall, they're PL 1.5- I mean, they couldn't really beat a PERSON- just put a hurting on one and maybe scare them away since they tend to go all-out.

-Grouses are small Galliformes from across North America and Eurasia- some are from the prairies while others live very var north. They make up a huge chunk of the biomass of the Arctic regions, as they can live just about anywhere. Some have extremely large display bits on their chests, and males have elaborate courtship displays. Some can be quite heavy, and the variety goes from less than a pound to over 14 lbs.

-There are numerous kinds of Grouse & Ptarmigan, both of whom are closely related. Grouses tend to be more heavily-built, while Ptarmigans are more slender. Ptarmigans have feathered legs to survive the cold and live across the entire Northern Hemisphere- there are three species.

PHEASANTS: Very closely related to Peacocks, as you can see by their incredibly bright coloring. Some are called "Peacock-Pheasants" and sport similar splayed-out tail feathers. Common Pheasants are an incredibly widespread bird that readily breeds in captivity and fits a number of habitats, and so has spread across much of the world, living in Europe, North America & Australia despite hailing from East Asia.

PARTRIDGES: Mostly an African species of flightless bird, but also live in Asia & Europe. Well-known for The Twelve Days of Christmas and The Partridge Family. There are around 45 species.

Disabled (Long Flights)- Peacocks cannot fly for long distances- their wing-to-body ratio is not right for it.
Disabled (Encumbering Feathers)- The huge trains of Peacocks make them easily to grab even from far away, and could get caught up on things. It's believed that part of the display by males is to "honestly broadcast" this disadvantage- indicating they are SO HEALTHY that even this handicap is nothing to them.

Total: Abilities: -24 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 25 / Defenses: 5 (21)

Era: Modern Day
Range: South Asia.
Stereotypes: Proud, showy.
Colouring: Blue or Green iridescent coloring with "eyespots".
Size: Up to 10 feet long (3-15 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Small flocks.
Diet: Usually seeds & grains, also tiny animals.
Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-Birds are famous for their mating displays, but none are more famous than the brilliant Peacocks, sporting enormous "trains" of feathers that can splay outwards in a huge fan of blue and green "eyes". The female "Peahens" are much smaller and far more drab, while the males are iridescent and showy. Their bright colors come from structural light refractions, not pigments- many birds have this feature, with different structures inside the feathers causing different coloring. Like their relatives the Pheasants & Partridges (Peacocks are actually just a large kind of Pheasant, really), Peacocks will eat a variety of food- mostly vegetation but also small lizards & rodents.

-As you can imagine, such a spectacular-looking animal has had quite an effect on cultures throughout the world. Ancient Babylonians used images of Peacocks on graves of royalty, acting as guardians. The Hindu God of War rides a Peacock as a mount, and Hera, Queen of the Greek Gods, holds them sacred (the hundred eyes of her dead faithful watchman, Argus Panoptes, were placed on the peacock's tail in tribute to him).
-Though they "present" large, and are incredibly long with their massive trains, Peafowl are not exceptionally large-bodied, and barely weigh over 15 lbs. They can fly (better than most Galliformes, in fact), but not for very far.

Peafowl Species:

INDIAN PEAFOWL: The most well-known, blue kind of Peacock. Actually very common, despite that region not being known for survivable beautiful animals.

Image

GREEN PEAFOWL: From Southeast Asia- the longest birds in existence, up to 9'10" long with their huge trains. Endangered.

Image

CONGO PEAFOWL: Significantly less impressive, even turkey-like, is the Congo Peafowl of Africa.

-The large, intimidating Turkeys are the largest of the Galliformes, and are famously hideous. They have not only large waddles on their chins, but small ones (called "snoods") hanging over the beaks of males. Their hairless heads make them very distinctive, as do their round bodies. The Wild Turkey of the U.S. was domesticated 2,000 years ago, and was a heavily-hunted animal upon the arrival of white settlers in the 1600s- its lack of flight and meaty body made them extra-enticing for hungry people. The Occelated Turkey of Mexico is much less widespread, living only in the Yucatan and being Near-Threatened.

-Though only 15-20 lbs., Turkeys are big and scary enough to fit PL 1.5 at least. Many animals of equal size would be easily intimidating by a bird of this size, as they are very aggressive. And they can actually FLY, sort of, having a low-to-the-ground agile form of flight. Domestic Turkeys have lost this trait.

-Domesticated Turkeys are MUCH larger than their wild brethren- too fat to fly once they hit adult sizes. Good thing, too, as this keeps the famous joke from WKRP in Cincinatti- in the legendary episode, the station owner decides to rain live turkeys over Cincinatti from a helicopter as part of an giveaway from the station... only for the field reporter Les Nessman give the narration of a horrific scene, as turkey after turkey plunges to their feathery doom. All we hear is his description of events, getting more and more outlandish as he is horrified and disgusted ("One just went through the windshield of a parked car!" "The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement!"). And then, to cap it all off, we see the the owner arrive at the station, utterly dissheveled, and utter the words "As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!".

-Domesticated Turkeys are much heavier and heftier than their Wild cousins, but lose some defenses because of it, still hitting PL 1.5 or so. Most are around 30 lbs., but exceptional specimens can hit over 90 lbs!
