Encounter Groups: Small schools merging to huge pods (10-2,000)
Diet: Crustaceans, squid, fish
Tactics: Flee from combat, bite fish or ram at top speed.

-The Dall's Porpoise, the largest kind, is actually freakishly fast, hitting 50 mph in the water. They are of Least Concern and thus can be readily hunted in places like Japan, where they're prized for their meat (the quota on killed ones being an astonishing 17,000 a year). They're mostly black with white patches on the bottom. Curiously, they are hunted by transient (ie. nomadic) Killer Whales, but will play and sometimes travel with resident ones.

-Being a bit larger than the lower-class of Dolphin, they adopt PL 4.5 status, being big, 400-pound-ish carnivores. They're not elite, but they're getting stronger. There are numerous species around this body weight. Many of these drop a bit in speed, but may be stronger.

Total: Abilities: 18 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 14 / Defenses: 9 (60)

Era: Modern
Range: Nearly All Coastlines
Stereotypes: Friendly, fun-loving goof-offs.
Colouring: Black, white & yellow
Size: Up to 8.5 feet long (130-220 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Huge pods (10-2,000)
Diet: Crustaceans, squid, fish
Tactics: Flee from combat, bite fish with beak or ram at top speed.

-These stats go to the more small-sized Dolphins (the famous Bottlenose is actually the largest kind)- most around 200-300 lbs. or so. They can live for 40-60 years in the wild, and tend to live in vast pods numbering in the thousands.

Small Dolphins:
SPOTTED DOLPHIN: Occur in every ocean except near both poles, hence the name of one species, the Pantropical Spotted Dolphin. Named for their extremely mottled spotted appearance. One of the most abundant dolphin species in the world now that dolphin-friendly netting has been invented (millions were killed in old tuna nets- an epidemic of vast proportions that resulted in a LOT of media attention). Also athletic and will play with boats. Despite often swimming with yellowfin tuna, they only eat smaller fish. About 200-300 lbs.

Image

DUSKY DOLPHIN: Dark dolphins with very striking white patterns on their sides and underbelly, and fairly non-pronounced beaks, looking almost Porpoise-like. Inhabiting the Southern Hemisphere (around New Zealand and South America), they are closely related to the Pacific White-Sided Dolphin, and are known for spectacular acrobatics. Far-reaching, they commonly interact with other cetacean speicies, like Common Dolphins & Pilot Whales. About 180-220 lbs.

Image
Image

SPINNER DOLPHIN: Generic-looking gray dolphins named for their spectacular acrobatics, as they burst out of the water and spin through the air. Controversially, they are a common subject of "swimming with dolphns" groups, particularly in Hawaii. They are preyed upon by Killer, Pilot, False Killer & Pygmy Killer Whales. About 100 lbs.

CLYMENE DOLPHIN: Closely related to Spinner & Striped Dolphins (genetic studies suggest they're actually a hybrid species!), but live only in the Atlantic Ocean. About 165-175 lbs.

HUMPBACK DOLPHINS (SMALLER): Named for a prominent hump that rises just below the dorsal fin. Usually split into four subspecies now, as the Atlantic is MUCH larger. The Indo-Pacific is also called the Chinese White Dolphin. One also resides in the Indian Ocean. 220-310 lbs.

Image
Image

RIGHT WHALE DOLPHIN: An exceptionally strange-looking, elongated black & white dolphin with a very smooth line from back to beak, these have no dorsal fin at all (same as the Right Whales- this gives them their name), and only tiny flippers. They live in the two hemispheres (giving us Northern & Southern subspecies) and live in Antarctic waters. Live in pods up to 1000 individuals strong. 130-220 lbs. in the South, and 255 lbs. or so in the North.

PEALE'S DOLPHIN: Live only in the Southern-most tip of South America. About 7 feet long and 255 lbs.

Image

HOURGLASS DOLPHIN: Very small, striking dolphins with bold white and black sections, sometimes giving it the whaler nicknames of "Sea Cow" or "Sea Skunk". Entirely live in the southernmost regions of the planet. About 6 feet long and 200 lbs.

-Common Dolphins are pretty sweet, and I think it's a shame that they're generally ignored in a wide world of cetaceans in favour of the Bottlenose or other, weirder ones. They look cool, they're pretty, and travel around in pods of thousands. It might be a size thing- humans are easily impressed by large creatures, and 1,000-pound Bottlenose Dolphins are much more stand-out in their own way compared to these medium-sized ones. This extends to most of the Porpoises as well, being much smaller, but very neat, Cetaceans.

-These are the dolphins seen depicted on Ancient Greek & Minoan art, as they were frequently seen in the Aegean Sea. The Short-Beaked variety (common in the Meditteranean and the Pacific Coast of the Americas is typically 220-300 lbs., while the Long-Beaked (seen in South America, Africa and South Asia) is 160-300 lbs.- the 500+ lb. animals are quite rare. Being so far-reaching, their diet is incredibly varied, and they eat 18-20 lbs. per day, mostly small fish. Common Dolphins are commonly seen breeding with other dolphin species- crossbreeds are fertile.

-The Common Dolphin and many Porpoises maintain this PL 4 build, balanced heavily towards Accuracy & Defense, being really hard to hit, but being about as small as an average human being, just with a dolphin's compact musculature, giving them slightly-higher Strength.

Encounter Groups: Huge pods (10-2,000)
Diet: Crustaceans, squid, fish
Tactics: Flee from combat, bite fish with beak or ram at top speed.

-These stats go do Dolphins of a slightly larger size than the Common Dolphin.

Medium-Sized Dolphins:
STRIPED DOLPHIN: Another very common dolphin, found everywhere but the poles. Named for a prominent single stripe running underneath a dark patch on the top of their body, and another long one running underneath the body. Most attempts to keep them in captivity have failed, and the Japanese used to kill thousands per year, but they remain a numerous species- possibly 2 million exist. About 330-350 lbs.

Image

IRRAWADDY DOLPHIN: Funny-looking dolphins with rounded snouts and teeny little "snub" dorsal fins, living in Southern Asia's coastline (actually holding populations in the Ganges & Mekong Rivers, among other freshwater bodies), resembling Porpoises or Belugas. Actually most closely related to the Killer Whale. Usually hang out in groups of 2-3, but up to 20 have been seen at once. Some river fishermen could cooperate with the dolphins, summoning them via wooden musical instruments rapped on the side of their boats, leading the dolphins to push fish towards their nets (the dolphins would be rewarded with bycatch). 200-400 lbs.
AUSTRALIAN SNUBFIN DOLPHIN: Very relatively-recently described- not being differentiated from the closely-related (and visually identical) Irrawaddy Dolphin until 2005. 280-320 lbs.

Image

PACIFIC WHITE-SIDED DOLPHIN: Seen in a narrow strip of the Pacific Ocean, from Asia to North America. Very similar to the Dusky Dolphin. Females are around 330 lbs., males around 440 lbs.
ROUGH-TOOTHED DOLPHIN: These live everywhere but the poles, but are little-studied as they live far out at sea. 6-9 feet, 200-340 lbs.

Disabled (Scent)- Dolphins are thought to have either no sense of smell at all, or only tiny amounts of scent capability. Their blowholes are closed when underwater, and useless in open air.

Total: Abilities: 18 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 18 / Defenses: 11 (74)

Era: Modern
Range: All oceans & seas save the very coldest
Stereotypes: Friendly, fun-loving goof-offs.
Colouring: Grey-brown.
Size: Up to 13 feet long (660-1,100 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Small schools merging to huge pods (10-2,000)
Diet: Crustaceans, squid, fish
Tactics: Flee from combat, bite fish or ram at top speed.

-A slightly larger tier of Dolphins, mostly around 500 lbs. or so. This boosts them over the Common Dolphin and other types- only the Risso's & Bottlenose Dolphins are larger, short of the jumbo-sized things like Pilot Whales & Orcas. These are PL 5 overall, crossing the divide between Bottlenose & Medium-Sized Dolphins.

Large Dolphins:
HUMPBACK DOLPHINS (LARGER): The larger varieties of Humpback Dolphin. They have tiny flukes and a small dorsal fin atop a prominent flat hump. The Atlantic version, off the coast of Africa, is Critically-Endangered, while the Australian is newly-recognized. Typically 400-550 lbs.

Image

ATLANTIC WHITE-SIDED DOLPHIN: The larger of the two White-Sided Dolphins. The patch on their side is white to pale yellow. 520 lbs.

Image

MELON-HEADED WHALE: Distinctive melon-headed dolphin and the only member of its genus- most closely-related to Pilot & Pygmy Killer Whales, with whom they are easily confused, as they have the same habitat and range. They live in massive groups numbering from 100-2,000, eating squid & small fish like other dolphins do. Can interbreed with Rough-Toothed Dolphins at least, and are highly prone to mass stranding, implying strong social bonds. 9 feet long & 500 lbs.

INDO-PACIFIC BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN: Many Bottlenose Dolphins are smaller than the typical oceanic ones, living along the coastline of most of the Southern Hemisphere. Typically 8'6" & 510 lbs.

Image

FRASER'S DOLPHIN: Found in a little stripe running along the center of the Earth. Very plain, light gray-brown dolphins with small fins & beaks. 9 feet long & 440-460 lbs.

Image

WHITE-BEAKED DOLPHIN: Little-studied and found in smaller groups than most dolphins (typically less than ten), only in the North Atlantic. About 7'7" & 400-800 lbs.

Image

PYGMY KILLER WHALE: Pygmy Killer Whales are named for their superficial similarity in color to Killer Whales, though they are much smaller, and mostly black- only their lips and snout are a white/pink color. They are typically very slow, cruising animals. In captivity, they are noticeably aggressive and hostile- this is not observed in the wild. They're very hard to find- it wasn't until 1950 that they were observed alive in the wild, and most die quickly in captivity. They're about 6-9 feet & 500 lbs.

So fun fact Dolphins can actually shut down half their brain to sleep

also they have an organ in their head called the Melon which is responsible for their sonic capabilities

-Bottlenose Dolphins are the largest of the beaked variety, thought they give up a great deal of weight to other toothed whales. Despite this, they're elite and ultra-intelligent, and easily the favourite of the Family amongst humans. Their genius is extraordinary and well-documented- they have shown intellect beyond that of everything but the Greater Apes, and even then they're about equal. They can understand complex symbols, directions and the like better than even the most well-trained dog. They will also readily team up with other cetacean species (usually larger species than themselves) and have been shown engaging in acts of kindness, like helping stranded whales find their way back to sea. Despite this, they're far more dangerous than most people suspect. Though cute, they weight over 1,000 pounds in some instances, and can and will kill larger animals that threaten them. Dolphins have also been known to commit infanticide (once murdering an infant in front of its mother), attack & kill Porpoises of various kinds (they leave the corpses uneaten), and the aggressively-horny males have been known to attack and hump the crap out of unsuspecting HUMANS. Yes, these are in fact enormous Sea Rapists.

-They are by far the most famous kind of dolphin, and are in fact the most numerous as well- unusual for being one of the largest. They readily hybridize with other Cetaceans, both in the wild and in captivity- they will do so with Risso's Dolphins and even False Killer Whales, producing "Wolphins". They live for more than 40 years. Bottlenoses are easily the most famous kind of dolphin, and have been well-represented in pop culture- the 1963 movie Flipper led to sequels AND a TV series, with a remake in 1995 starting the career of Jessica Alba. Movies like Dolphin Tale (about a real-life dolphin that lost its tail and learned to swim using a prosthesis) and video games like Ecco the Dolphin have also been notable.

-The Bottlenose Dolphin is an impressive PL 6 specimen, being extremely agile, very skilled, and quite strong- at least as strong as a Lion or Horse in some instances, especially once they get going with their Nose Attack. Plus they live in groups, and are excellent at working as a team. And look at that points-cost- these things are PRICEY, and with 20 points spent on Skills, no wonder. They're cute, but mighty, and VERY accurate compared to most animals of similar size. They give up power to the larger Whales, but are much better fighters, likely hitting the same PL.

-The official 2e & 3e builds for Dolphins have always seemed pretty low to me. They don't even have Growth (despite being twice as heavy as Lions sometimes- which had Growth all the time), and they're PL 3 weenies when almost all the big-time predators were at least over PL 5. Now, many Bottlenoses are smaller than the 1,100-pound MAX for the species (some are even half the size), but that's still a 500-pounder, which should earn it some boosted Strength. If you want to stat up a "Flipper"-esque smaller variety, just knock off a rank or two of Strength and boost the accuracy.

Curiously, if the theme song is to be believed, Flipper had Swim 19.

"Wolf Pack Tactics" is the key- PL 6 is plenty good when you outnumber a PL 8-9 foe.

Huge Dolphins:
RISSO'S DOLPHIN: Another Porpoise-looking one, but much larger, reaching the size of Bottlenose Dolphins. They eat squid and other cephalopods almost exclusively, so their teeth are mroe peg-like to enable stronger grips- they also use their teeth for display and against each other, to the extent that nearly every adult specimen is heavily scarred. 13 feet long & 660-1,100 lbs.

I look at Risso's dolphin, and I see a porpoise. The rules for telling dolphins and porpoises apart drive me nuts.

My understanding is its the snout. longer pointier = dolphin

shorter blunter = porpoise
