-Fin Whales bridge the gap between Humpback Whales and Blue Whales in size- they are the world's second-largest animals. It's been called "the greyhound of the sea"- named for its slender grey body and what is apparently a considerable swimming speed. They have been deemed Vulnerable- thousands remain, but this can be precarious, and they were once heavily hunted. They are asymmetrically colored, with one side featuring more color shifts than the other, and can live between 90-140 years of age.

-Fin Whales are a slightly lower variant of the Blue Whale, knocking 1-2 points off everywhere.

Total: Abilities: -24 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 78 / Defenses: 27 (93)

Range: Nearly all world waterways (except North & South)
Stereotypes: Slow-moving, serene giants.
Colouring: Blue with white patches

-Everyone knows these guys, for obvious reasons. I mean, this is the HUGEST ANIMAL EVER- nothing before matches it. Kinda stands out. A big deal is made out of "the biggest ever" in all things, but here the numbers are so ludicrous as to defy convention. Almost 100 feet long and weighing almost 200 tons, they are more than twice as big as Fin Whales, the next-largest animal. Human children can crawl through their largest arteries, their heart is as big as a VW Beetle, and newborns can be up to 23 feet long on arrival. They have no natural predators aside from Killer Whales (which pick at them, causing horrible wounds over time) and mankind- so much so that they were nearly wiped out half a century ago. Only vast protective efforts have kept them alive, and they're still on unsteady ground as far as their continued existence goes. But they're impressive just for their vast size.

-The Blue Whales are tough to stat, since they never really engage in combat. It's presumed they can cause horrific damage if they get enough speed, but they rarely do, so even this "Elite" version has little to no accuracy. However, it still possesses a Body Ram attack, so maintains PL 10 status. Only problem is, you're gonna be REAL hard-up to cause lasting damage to something this tough. Whole Orca Pods will follow them for DAYS biting pieces off before they die.

-There's only a few comparable Whales up this high on the size scale. The Sei Whale and the Fin Whale are both much larger than the Humpback, but twenty feet or so smaller than the Blue Whale. They probably adjust their stats only by a level or two.

At first I thought this was the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA, but now I think it's somewhere else with a similar replica.

I was blown away when I saw that replica. Somewhere I have a picture of the view looking right at it's snout. FOUND IT!!!

I have heard that the superhuge whales of the modern era came about after the superhuge shark Megalodon went extinct, since without this specialist whale-hunter around any more there was no constraint by predation on their size. Megalodon apparently crapped out due to the medium-size whales which were it's prey abandoning middle-latitude waters due to climate change from the shifting ice ages (the middle latitude waters got too warm, oxygen levels fell and they couldn't support so much food for the whales), and being sharks they couldn't follow them into the colder polar waters. The Great White thrived though as it is practically warm-blooded and so could follow after and feast on the abundant sea-mammals.

Amphibians

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

AMPHIBIANS (Class- Amphibia):

-Go back far enough, and pretty much all land vertebrates owe their lineage to Amphibians. Debuting in the Devonian Period, they soon came to dominate the Earth until their offshoots- the Reptiles- took over. Amphibians, once extremely diverse and covering many steps in the food chain, now are pretty much just three groups separated into 7,000 small species, 90% of which are Frogs (the other two are Salamanders & Caecilians). A tiny Frog is the world's smallest vertebrate (about half the size of a U.S. dime), and the longest is a hair under six feet in length (the Chinese Giant Salamander)- once, they were up to nine feet long.

-Amphibians are, well, amphibious, being at home on land or in the water, where they can travel at great speeds. They give birth to eggs full of tiny tadpoles, which grow less and less aquatic with time, eventually growing legs and scarcely resembling their original forms at all (basically, Frogs are the Saiyans of the vertebrate world). Many, MANY species are now incredibly-Endangered, with the constant frog death being a sign of environmental disaster in many regions of the world- with skin that easily absorbs the water and anything in it, frogs are a good indicator of environmental health.

Danger to Humans: Minimal, though many species give off terrible poisons that make them quite dangerous to handle.

This one is from the Natural History Museum in New York- I can tell because of the Walrus exhibit right beside it. This one's pretty mind-blowing in person, too. I've also seen a blue whale statue outside the National History Museum in Tokyo.

Wow, that's interesting- I hadn't heard that about Megalodon. And yeah, such size often comes from a lack of predators, as the animal can get as big as it physically can while still remaining fed.

I've read some stuff about scientists looking at the Whale Shark's white underside and going "Now what was THIS thing trying to hide from?". Considering it's a plankton feeder and currently not a major target of predation, they were a bit mortified to think of what was hunting THOSE that would get them to evolve such countershading (which is typically to make it harder to see from below).

99% of all dead animals do not fossilize...meaning, we have a very patchy understanding of ancient fauna. So many species just left no remains, so we’ll never know what they were.

Sad, really.

Total: Abilities: -36 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 35 / Defenses: 4 (17)

Era: Modern Day
Range: All across the world (except Antarctica).
Stereotypes: Sneaky bastards (Salamanders).
Colouring: Any Possible Colour, in any possibly design.
Size: Up to 18 inches long (miniscule ounces to 7 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Hordes of 2-200.
Diet: Small animals (insects, fish, small mammals, other amphibians).
Tactics: Flee rapidly, or attempt to swallow whole.

-Salamanders make up the majority of the non-Frog members of the Amphibian class. They are long, narrow tetrapods of varying sizes, most very small. Salamanders were somewhat less trusted than Frogs- their slender bodies resembled snakes, they were moist to the touch, and they had a tendency to reside in rotting logs- when said logs were tossed onto the fire, the Fire Salamanders would burst out from them and flee, creating a myth that Salamanders were born from fire itself.

Types of Salamanders:
NEWTS & TRUE SALAMANDERS: Common aquatic salamanders. Many are highly poisonous, and will kill even adult humans if injested (maybe a Feature, since the Newts also die in the process). This is believed to be a "predator arms race" against the Garter Snakes, as the Newts have evolved enough venom to handle any other conceivable predator, which is highly unnecessary... except the snakes are increasingly immune.
LUNGLESS SALAMANDERS: Never develop lungs- they instead breathe directly through their skin.

Image

FIRE SALAMANDER: Iconic black & yellow salamander known for crawling free from burning logs, giving rise to the myth that they were born from the fire. Common throughout Europe, hence this being a widespread thought for a while.

Image

CONGO SNAKES: Properly called "Amphiumas", these are elongated, snakelike salamanders with tiny, vestigial legs. Naturally among the most aquatic amphibians, but are detested by fishermen for their tendency to prey upon everything that swims.

TORRENT SALAMANDERS: Extremely tiny.
ASIATIC SALAMANDERS: Related to the Giant Salamanders, but are much smaller typically.

-Axolotls are relatively well-known these days, but are incredibly-rare in the wild, residing only in a single lake next to Mexico City, Mexico, one of the most populous cities on the planet. Axolotls are famous for their regenerative powers and for the fact that they retain their external gils throughout their entire natural lifespan, remaining purely aquatic. This is because they do not undergo a full metamorphosis- something unique among amphibians. A thyroid hormone has been discovered that will force a "full metamorphosis", however- thus, Axolotls can be made to artificially lose their gills.

-Axolotls are readily bred in captivity, meaning their numbers outside the wild are numerous- since they lack the terrestrial concerns of other Salamanders, have see-through embryos and eggs, and are easy to care for otherwise, they are a much simpler animal to keep. Varieties of colors have been discovered, and their cute appearance, with little frilly gills and "smiles" on their faces, makes them somewhat popular.

-Axolotls are effectively just basic Salamanders that are now gilled.

-Olms are true rarities- they only chordates (that is, animals with spinal cords) that live only in caves. These strange, blind amphibians were discovered in the 1600s, washing up due to a flood and being mistaken for infant Cave Dragons. What they actually are is a species of totally-aquatic salamanders that never lose their gills, cannot see, and move about via exceptional hearing that gives them an accurate "fix" on everything around them. These long, tiny-limbed creatures lack pigmentation, and leave entirely within the boundaries of Southeastern Europe, especially Slovenia.

-Olms are like Axolotls with Accurate Hearing and no visual senses.

-Many Salamanders exist that are gilled like the Axolotl, but these are the natural final stage in metamorphosis of these animals.

Gilled Salamanders:
MUDPUPPIES: Also called "waterdogs", these are decently-sized salamanders. They live 6-11 years, and are common in places like Kentucky.

SIRENS: Sirens are exceptionally long, eel-like salamanders, sporting no back limbs, and front legs so tiny they can hide entirely behind the creature's gills. They are found in the Southeastern U.S. & Northern Mexico. Unlike the vast majority of amphibians, they are semi-herbivorous.
