FIGHTING -2 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE -4 AWARENESS 1 PRESENCE -3

Skills:
Athletics 10 (+5)
Close Combat (Beaky Bite) 2 (+4)
Expertise (Survival) 4 (+5)
Perception 4 (+5)

Advantages:
Close Attack 2, Great Endurance, Improved Initiative

Powers:
"Animal Senses" Senses 3 (Extended Scent, Low-Light & Extended Vision) [3]
Movement 1 (Environmental Adaptation- Arctic) [2]
Swimming 5 [5]

"Fun Size" Shrinking 12 (Feats: Innate) (Extras: Permanent +0) -- (6 inches) [25]
(-3 Strength, +6 Defenses, +12 Stealth, -6 Intimidation, -1 Speed)

Offense:
Unarmed +4 (-5 Damage, DC 10)
Beak +4 (-4 Damage, DC 11)
Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +4 (DC 14), Parry +4 (DC 14), Toughness -5, Fortitude +0, Will +0

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Birds cannot speak to humans, nor use their wings & beaks to easily manipulate objects.
Disabled (Non-Terrestrial)- Petrels typically have weak legs set very far back, and so are very poorly mobile on land. They will often just lean their breast against the ground and push themselves using their wings.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, Small Birds are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on a Bird of this scale effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -32 / Skills: 20--10 / Advantages: 4 / Powers: 35 / Defenses: 4 (21)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Northern oceans.
Stereotypes: Inquisitive.
Colouring: Black & white.
Size: 20-35 inches tall (11 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Colonies of thousands.
Diet: Fish, shrimp.
Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-Among the more notable recent extinctions is that of the Great Auk, a large flightless Auk which died out in 1852- hunted to extinction. They were about three feet tall and weight 11 lbs., so weren't THAT big, but they were an important food source to Native peoples and to arriving Europeans, who readily ate them and used them for bait, reducing their numbers. Known to only a handful of island and coastal regions (including Canada & Great Britain), it was notable enough that when Europeans found similar-looking black & white flightless birds in the Southern Hemisphere much later, they named them for the Great Auk- "Pinguinus".

-Great Auk down was a high-demand item in Europe, removing most of them by the 16th century. It was the cause of some of the earliest environmental laws, as it was recognized that the creatures were disappearing- as its extinction became irreversible, people just began catching them for skins and eggs before the end came- the last confimed sighting was a couple killed in 1844, and the last "rumored" sightning was eight years later. Its closest living relative is the diminutive Little Auk.

-The Great Auk is only 9 lbs. heavier than Puffins and stuff like that, but that's about 5x the size in some cases, so it's slightly tougher. It's the only Auk to lose flight entirely, however.

-There are 26 known species of Bustards, related to the Cranes. They are terrestrial birds with long legs. Among the largest is the 44-lb. Kori Bustard, sporting a wingspan of 7-9 feet. These are the largest flying birds in Africa. The Great Bustard of Eurasia is of similar stature (though in Europe they are much smaller- barely 5-9 lbs). The 28-lb. Australian Bustard is the only Aussie variety, and there are also Great Indian & Arabian Bustards of equivalent size. Bustards are shy birds, and will rarely fly- mostly to escape. Females are much, much smaller than males, who will fight for dominance and mating rights, then leave the females to do all of the nesting and chick-rearing.

Era: Modern Day
Range: Everywhere but South America & Antarctica.
Stereotypes: Regal, proud.
Colouring: Usually white.
Size: 2.5-5 feet tall (8-15 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Small groups.
Diet: Mostly vegetation, plus small reptiles, mammals, fish.
Tactics: Flee rapidly, occasionally batter with pointy beak.

-Cranes are among the tallest flying birds, and the most consistently threatened birds in the world, with the highest proportion of Endangered species. As they heavily prefer wetland habitat, they are among the most vulnerable birds to extinction. Cranes will eat nearly anything, but most focus on vegetation for the most part, eating small animals occasionally. Their dances and spectacular appearance has made them famous and admired the world over. In Japan, they came to symbolize peace and the innocent victims of war after Sadako Sasaki, a girl dying of lieukemia brought on by the Atomic Bomb in Hiroshima, died after folding 1,000 paper cranes (Japanese myth said that anyone who completed such a task would have a wish granted).

-The sixteen species of Cranes include the Black & Grey Crowned Cranes, Common Crane (Eurasia), Siberian & Hooded Crane (Northern Asia), Wattled & Blue Crane (Africa), Sandhill Crane (America), Brolga (Australia), Red-Crowned Crane, and the Sarus Crane- the tallest of the flying birds (hitting six feet tall!). The Xhosa people of Africa so deeply respected Blue Cranes that men of distinction would be decorated with their feathers. Smallest is the 6-lb. Demoiselle Crane of Asia.

-The Whooping Crane of North America was famously among the rarest animals in the world- a careful restoration program has brought them back from the brink- what was once 23 animals is now 800, one of the biggest success stories of its kind. Among their issues was an overpopulation of Bobcasts, whose own predators (the Florida Panther & Red Wolf) were repelled, leading to an overpopulation. Despite the size of Cranes and their capability at repelling predators, they were weak against the stealthy Bobcat, who are ambush hunters.

BUTTONQUAILS: Buttonquails are tiny birds, usually weighing less than a pound. Twenty species strong, they are named after the Quails, which look similar, but are unrelated. They are closely related to the Cranes.
FLUFFTAILS & WOODRAILS: Tiny, often very colorful birds, spread across much of Africa (but especially Madagascar).
RAILS: A very large group. Some weigh as much as 6 lbs., but most are smaller. They include things like the Swamphens, which are chicken-sized wild birds seen in Europe.

-Finfoots are like Rails, but with finned feed since they leave near water, effectively making them the Ducks of the family. There are only three species- the African Finfoot, the Masked Finfoot, and the Sungrebe of South America- all separated by thousands of miles each. Also similar are the Coots, who have the distinctive giant feet of Rails, but are otherwise somewhat morphologically similar to ducks, having recognizable body types.

Size: 1-2 feet tall (3-10 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Mixed-sex colonies of thousands.
Diet: Fish, small cephalopods.

-The smallest Penguins are usually 10 lbs or less. These include pretty popular zoo animals in the Yellow-Crested Penguins, but also some obscure ones. In general, these animals are pure weaklings, and very cheap on points, since they can't hurt anything larger than a cat

Small Penguins:
YELLOW-CRESTED PENGUINS: Most of these look alike, and are closely related. These include the Royal Penguins (6-17 lbs), Macaroni Penguins (8-14 lbs), Fjordland Penguin & Erect-Crested Penguins of New Zealand (4-13 lbs), Snares Penguin (5-9 lbs), and the Rockhopper Penguins known for attempting to leap over obstacles (5-10 lbs).

LITTLE PENGUIN: These are the smallest Penguins, averaging to about 3.3 lbs.

BANDED PENGUINS: African Penguin (5-8 lbs), Magellanic Penguin (6-13 lbs), Galapagos Penguin (5-9 lbs), Humbolt Penguin (6-13 lbs). The latter three all live in South America, and are quite rare- the Galapagos Penguin is the world's rarest- preyed upon by the birds of prey native to the Islands, as well as introduced dogs & cats.

CHINSTRAP PENGUIN: Named for the thin dark line around its chin, these Antarctic birds are known to be the most aggressive and temperamental of the penguins. 7-12 lbs.

ADELIE PENGUINS: Tiny Antarctic Penguins known for their lack of caution around humans- said to walk right up to vicious dogs and get eaten as a result. Their diet was once mostly fish, but the population decreases of many krill-eating predators in the area had them switch to krill instead. 7-13 lbs.

The Yellow-Eyed Penguin (8-19 lbs) is the largest Penguin native to New Zealand. The Gentoo Penguin (10-18 lbs) has an unknown origin for its name- it has a small white bit above its eyes and around its head ("Gentoo" is an Anglo-Indian term to differentiate Hindus from Muslims).

-These Penguins are PL 0.5, but only with parrying- they're just not big enough to challenge most major predators.

-The largest surviving group of penguins are the huge Emperor Penguins, being almost four feet tall and nearly 100 pounds. Males will incubate the egg for two months while the female forages in the ocean, and then she will take over so he can feed; this goes on repeatedly while the other creature fasts- males will go four months without food, and will sustain the newborn chick with "crop milk" (only pigeons, flamingos and male Emperor penguins produce this curd-like substance). Males will mass-huddle to avoid -40 C temperatures, taking turns in the warmer middle. Penguins have always been well-known, but never more popular than when March of the Penguins was released- with Morgan Freeman's soulful narration, and a well-filmed documentation of their intense, arduous journey, Penguins instantly became enormously-popular. Naturalist Johann Forster may have been the first human to ever see these, during Captain Cook's voyage around Antarctica in the 1700s. Emperor Penguins typically live about 20 years in the wild, but may reach 50 years of age.

-Emperor Penguins are not really capable fighters (especially on land), but they move like bullets underwater, where their predators include Leopard Seals & Killer Whales. They're only PL 2 (upgraded since the last time I built them), but are the biggest and strongest penguins around.

There also exists fossils of what were apparently MASSIVE Penguins, hitting human heights, from millions of years ago:

Not much is known of these, unfortunately.
