Wow, interesting- I didn't know whales could be THAT screechy. There's some reporting that cats only meow in front of humans- it's not a thing they do among cats. Effectively it's a learned behavior to get what they want from us.

-The genus "Berardius" has two extremely large Beaked Whales in it- the Arnoux's (North) and the Baird's (in the South). They live alongside Bottlenose Whales, but are considerably larger. Scientists find them so similar they actually argue over whether or not they're simply two populations of the same species, but they are a bit genetically distinct. They have somewhat prominent teeth, visible even when the mouths are closed- males use these to fight. Unusually for mammals, the males far outlive the females- females barely live past 55, while males can be up to 85 years old. As they are hard to spot, it's unknown just how many remain- Japan harvests them frequently, classifying them as a "Small Whale" species, despite their tremendous size, and some populations have disappeared.

-Giant Beaked Whales actually hit PL 7.5 for the most part, being the largest of their kind.

-The Sperm Whale Superfamily contains two incredibly weird creatures- the Dwarf & Pygmy Sperm Whales. Looking like Sperm Whales that shrunk in the wash, these 11-foot animals have teeny-tiny lil' jaws that look adorbz but also very "off" and weird, as they don't really match what's typical for cetacean species. They are found everywhere but the poles, but are so small and hard to find in the wild that almost all that is known comes from stranded specimens. They have occasionally been hunted, especially as they have the same spermaceti organ that made Sperm Whales so valuable (the oil is highly-sought-after for purposes of perfumes). Unusually, they have up to 12 liters of a dark reddish-brown "ink" that can be expelled, much like an octopus, to deter or confuse predators.

-Pygmy Sperm Whales are very small and harmless by the standards of 880-lb. predators, but have a unique form of ink that I chose to depict as an Affliction that can daze or stun pursuers- it's very limited and can't be done often, but you need to use your Survival Skills to surpass it. They were relatively easy for humans to catch, as they swim slowly and tend to lie at the surface for a while.

-The Dwarf Sperm Whale is the smallest member of the three Sperm Whale types, and was considered synonymous with the Pygmy Sperm Whale until 1998. Like those, they eat via sucking in squids and the like- they are nearly toothless and don't do a lot of damage for a 660-lb. animal.

Range: Nearly all world waterways (except North & South)
Stereotypes: Ship-sinking Bad-Asses.
Colouring: Greyish-brown

Encounter Groups: Solitary or pods (1-20)

Tactics: Deep dives and fierce grappling bites with large prey.

-The Sperm Whale is the mightiest of all carnivores, and the largest predator currently stalking the seas. It's a true 65-foot, 63-ton titan that will crush absolutely anything that screws with it. It's for the best that they don't hunt humans. Their... interesting... name comes from the "Spermaceti" organ, a huge waxy-oil substance-filled organ that, when fried, resembles... well, you know. Gross. But even with that questionable name, you've got one of the most visually unique animals on Earth, and a true powerhouse. They feed by diving deeper than almost any other mammal could possibly survive (only the Cuvier's Beaked Whale & Southern Elephant Seal dive deeper among mammals), and combat everything from ordinary squid to the types we've barely ever seen (in fact, the only real evidence we had for years that the Giant or Colossal Squid was real was scarring on the Sperm Whale's body).

-Sperm Whales make the loudest vocalizations of any animal on Earth, has the largest brain of any known animal (living or dead- 20 lbs.), and can live for 70 years or more. Not normally dangerous to humans, but more than one ship has been capsized by an angry bull. Most famously, it was the whaling ship "Essex" in 1820- it was rammed twice by a large bull named Mocha Dick when they threatened his pod, and was sunk, resulting in the ship being adrift at sea for 95 days. This resulted in mass cannibalism by the desperate men. You, uh, might find his name familiar- he in fact inspired the Melville novel Moby-Dick. Sperm Whales are so huge they can ACCIDENTALLY destroy ships.

-At PL 11, the Sperm Whale is as big and as tough as it gets for "Real World" animals. They do +13 Damage, have Power Attack, +14 Toughness (5 of it Impervious), and a Body Ram Area Attack that can wipe out anybody within 30 feet. These suckers are BIG, and are so power-heavy that nothing else in the seas could really stand a chance. Their only natural predators are the Killer/Pilot/False Killer Whale group, and even then they could only rarely hope to take an adult female (usually it's just calves)- a full-grown bull? They won't dare- adult males have no known predators save us.

Given the number of teeth in the critter's mouth, I really doubt anything that gets down its throat would be "whole".

-The ancient Basilosaurus was the largest oceanic predator of its era, and actually surpasses the size of the Mosasaurs such as Tylosaurus, and looks almost the same- which is bizarre when you consider that this "saurus" isn't a reptile at all- it's actually a primitive WHALE. It just looked so similar to sea monsters of the reptilian age that scientists named it "King Lizard" by virtue of its sheer size. I mean, you can see why they'd think that- it looks NOTHING like modern whales, being an elongated, serpentine monster. Some have tried to change the name to the more-proper "Zeuglodon" ("whale-like yoke teeth"), but silly Paleontological name precedence means that it HAS to be called Basilosaurus. Not that it isn't a cooler name or anything.

-It's a PL 11 super-heavyweight monster, dishing out +15 damage, and being rather accurate, since it's hard to dodge something that's head is twice your size. It's quite similar to the Sperm Whale, but scales higher for damage since it's a fair bit larger.

Baleen Whales

Post by Jabroniville »

MYSTICETI FAMILY (Order- Cetacea):
-The Baleen Whales are the largest animals that have ever lived on our planet, and have a special place in our imagination because of it. Of course, that didn't stop us from nearly wiping out their Family a century ago, and doesn't stop the Japanese from harvesting them today (don't get me wrong- I'm no fan of Whale Wars- lying to make your cause seem better doesn't sit well with me, nor does the fact that they seem generally useless- South Park had a great episode taking stabs at the WW crew, AND the Japanese for being so genocidally weird with whales). I guess being big, fat and slow, and packing on tons upon tons of meat doesn't add up to a positive relationship with humans. Even the SMALLEST versions of this Family are huge- they go from the Minke Whales (a trim & svelte 14.5 tons) to the Blue Whale in size and scope.

-There's a curious thing with whaling that makes figuring out stats tricky- how animals that are +10-15 or so in toughness are so easily killed by humans. Well the issue is they're so big that they have no defenses, and are sitting ducks in the water- and even in olden days a harpoon can cause some real damage. And whales typically bled out or were heavily weakened before they were killed- not simply one-shotted.

Encounter Groups: Small to huge pods (5-50)
Diet: Mollusks, large fish, dolphins, sea lions
Tactics: Chase down prey with great speed and attack with conical teeth.

-There are two types of extremely tiny whale- both about the size of a Killer Whale (meaning the "tiny" whales are a mere 20-35 feet and weigh between 4-11 tons). Since they were smaller and faster, they were less-hunted that the more lucrative giant whales, and are thus far more readily-available.

Small Whales:
MINKE WHALE: Also known as the "Lesser Rorqual", they are easily recognizable for the white bands across their flippers. They typically live about 50-60 years, and are among the fastest whales, hitting 35 mph. Despite this, they are frequently hunted by Killer Whales, who can match their speed and easily defeat them- Minke Whales only have a flight response, and are never observed fighting back. They're estimated to number over 500,000, making them the most populous of the baleen whales. Many eat primarily herring, cod or sand eels, with krill being chosen in the off-season. They live all over the oceans, with an Antarctic subspecies being a good bit larger. 30-35 feet long & 4-6 tons. Antarctic Minke Whales can be 6-11 tons.\

PYGMY RIGHT WHALE: The smallest of the baleen whales, being only about 20 feet long & 6-7,000 lbs. Also very common and rarely exploited by man. They are the most odd of the baleen whales, considered "Living Fossils" because they are the last remaining example of a type that's long since died out- this means they are not closely related to Right Whales, despite their name. They're extremely unknown because to date, only 25 sightings have been made at sea.
