Era: Pre-Modern Era
Range: Madagascar
Colouring: Probably Lemur-like.

Diet: Seeds, fruit, leaves.
Tactics: Attack all-out with surprisingly-powerful limbs and teeth.

-Yes, GIANT LEMURS. Real thing. See, Madagascar's creatures kind of evolved without outside pressures for millions of years, and this allowed for some odd speciation. Many of the animals died out in ancient times, but SOME of them had likely survived until the modern era, as Madagascar had only been settled a few hundred years A.D. Many were simply larger than regular Lemurs, while the largest, this one, weighed THREE-HUNDRED FIFTY POUNDS. It was apparently still alive (but in smaller populations) on the island when humans first came there in 300 B.C., which unfortunately robbed us of the sheer awesomeness of a freaking GIANT LEMUR showing up in zoos. Naturally, as an animal only known through fossils, expectations of its weight vary (some went as high as 500+ lbs.), but they were certainly among the largest primates of all time.

Monkeys

Post by Jabroniville »

MONKEYS:
-Monkeys are famously-entertaining, but make really crappy pets. Despite their cute appearance, they are troublesome little bastards, often biting and pooping all over everything. Marcel, the famous monkey sidekick on Friends, was written out of the show after horrendous problems dealing with the prick of an animal actor on-set. Monkeys pretty much always live in trees, climbing and leaping about, and are extremely agile. Most are rather small- between 4 and 30 lbs., with a few exceptions here and there. Old World Monkeys (Africa & Asia) are more closely-related to Apes, and have front-facing nostrils and hard "sitting pads" on their rumps. New World Monkeys (South & Central America) have sideways-facing nostrils, and lack butt-padding.

-There's the super-tiny Marmosets, which are ridiculously cute and generally weight less than a pound (the Pygmy Marmoset weighs 4 ounces and is smaller than most rodents). Squirrel Monkeys, Howler Monkeys and more live in South America, and weigh about 20 lbs. on average. The Patas Monkey, De Brazza's Monkey and other slightly-larger varieties live in Africa, along with the heavyweight Baboons and the Mandrill. There's also some rare Asian Monkeys, such as the Proboscis (with its giant nose), Golden Monkey, Langur, and the Macaques.

-Monkeys are often very poorly-studied, with little research done on many (we're still finding species, too). This is in part because of their small size, arboreal lifestyles, stealth and remote habitats. As such, many animals following here are actually fairly obscure and unknown.

Disabled (Animal)- Lemurs cannot speak to humans, and their hands are less-dextrous than most other Primates.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, Lemurs are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on a Tarsier effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -22 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 34 / Defenses: 5 (39)

Era: Modern Day
Range: South & Central America
Colouring: Multiple colors (gray, brown, white, etc.).
Size: Up to 8 inches long (less than a pound)
Encounter Groups: Small groups.
Diet: Tree gum/sap, fruit, nectar, small animals.
Tactics: Flee at all costs into the trees. Mob larger predators. Sneak attacks of small animals.

-The tiniest of all monkeys are the Marmoset genus, found in South America- they have some primitive traits (such as claws instead of nails) and almost all weigh less than a pound. There are 22 different species in the genus, including the world's smallest monkey- the Pygmy Marmoset. Given how rare many are, and their tiny size, there's very little known about many of them, to the point where descriptions are just "Name + Region". Many are just named for their color scheme, or for a certain biologist.

Types of Marmosets:
COMMON MARMOSET: Plain-looking gray Marmosets that are relatively abundant and not threatened. This has made them ideal primates for use in scientific experiments, where they are by far the most common aside from humans.
PYGMY MARMOSET: The smallest monkeys in the world- less than six inches long body-wise, and weighing just over 100 grams. Their size and clinginess to things (such as an owner's finger) made them the basis for the popular "Fingerlings" toys.

Image

WHITE-HEADED MARMOSET: Breed readily in zoos- so much so, that some have to enact birth control on them. White heads and multicolored bodies.
OTHER SPECIES: Black-Tufted, Black-Headed, Black-Tailed, Buffy-Headed, Buffy-Tufted, Silvery, White, Gold-And-White, Santarem, Munduruku, Wied's, Maués, Emilia's, Rio Acari, Marca's, Hershkovitz's, Satéré's, Rondon's & Roosemalen's Dwarf Marmosets. Most live in very tiny regions.

-Titis are hilariously-named tiny South American monkeys with furry tails and small bodies. They are territorial animals and little-studied, with the number of described species doubling in recent years. An auction for charitable purposes was held recently to secure the naming rights to one- Golden Palace .com won, naming one P. aureipalatii (their name in Latin). There are about two dozen species in total, some having prominent "sideburns" or "beards" of bright copper- nearly any mammalian coloration is seen on these, however.

Era: Modern Day
Range: Southeast Asia
Colouring: Grey/white
Size: Up to 6 inches long (0.5-2 lbs.)

Diet: Fruits, spiders, insects, small vertebrates, eggs.

-Tamarins are a slight step up in size from Marmosets, but only barely, and are much more spectacular in appearance. These are some of the cutest monkeys, and have the most expressive appearances, especially the Golden Lion Tamarin. Like Marmosets, they live in the rainforests of South America. Most live with dominant couples being the ones to breed, with group efforts ensuring the survival of young. There are actually four different groups within this section- Tamarins, Saddled-Backed Tamarins, Lion Tamarins & Goeldi's Monkeys. All have identical statlines.
-Tamarins are a notch tougher than Marmosets, and a little better at fighting, but otherwise the same- not a lot of ways a 1.5-lb. animal is different from a 0.5 lb. one.

Types of Tamarins:

Image

GOLDEN LION TAMARIN: Extremely distinctive, bright-golden monkeys with dark faces, making them a popular "get" for zoos. Currently threatened by deforestation.

Image

GOLDEN-HEADED LION TAMARIN: Never heard of these ones- they're similar to the above, but are black with only the head and extremities being golden-hued. Endangered.

Image

BLACK LION TAMARIN: Almost all-black. One of the rarest Tamarins in the world, and was thought to be extinct for 65 years until being rediscovered in 1970. Currently 1,000 are thought to remain in a tiny region.
BLACK-FACED LION TAMARIN: Mostly black, but with golden fringe.

Image

COTTON-TOP TAMARIN: Named for the famously bright white mops of hair on their heads. Critically-Endangered (only 6,000 left in the wild). Are known to show spiteful or altruistic behaviors in mixed groups, and their vocalizations have shown certain grammatical structures, implying complexity of thought.

Image

EMPEROR TAMARIN: Famously-large white moustaches, and possibly named for German Emperor Wilhelm II. Fairly common, and exhibit a polyandrous mating system- lead females mating with multiple males. This ensures paternal care for the young and diminishes infanticide, as males presume that they could be the fathers of any infants.
MOUSTACHED TAMARIN: Bright white fur in patches under the nose (not a full 'stache like the Emperor).
BLACK TAMARIN: The only all-black Tamarins, and one of the smallest (around 500 grams).
GOELDI'S MONKEY: Tiny black monkeys vaguely related to the rest of these. Despite being pretty common in zoos where I live, they have pretty tiny bios online.
WHITE-LIPPED TAMARIN: Red bellies and bright white lips.
RED-CAPPED TAMARIN: Little-studied but probably common.

Image

PIED TAMARIN: Brown lower body, white upper body and black heads- very distinctive. Critically-Endangered.
SADDLED-BACKED TAMARINS: A similar group that have since been split off genetically. Ten species are recognized, with most being little-studied and living across tiny regions.
OTHER TAMARINS: Others are the White-Footed, Geoffroy's, Red-Handed, Mottle-Faced & Martin's Tamarin.

-Night Monkeys, also known as Owl Monkeys or Douroucoulis, are nocturnal South American monkeys, comprised of eleven species. They are the only true full-bore nocturnal monkeys- all other monkey species spend at least some time in the daylight. Their ears are almost impossible to see, giving them the genus name "Aotus" ("earless"). There is very little data on the weights of Night Monkeys- the heaviest weighs about 2.7 lbs, and the lightest weighs only around 1 lb. Like most tiny South American monkeys, they are monogamous.

-Extremely tiny, Night Monkeys share stats with the Titis. Being nocturnal, they have very large eyes, giving them an almost "Bushbaby"-like appearance, but have the long, slender bodies of monkeys.
